Bob Campbell: Taylors Estate Limestone Coast, Clare Valley Shiraz $20

Taylors Estate Limestone Coast, Clare Valley Shiraz $20

    Why I chose it

    - Hearty red for the months ahead.

    - Taylor’s produces some of the best value reds in Australia.

    - Australian wine sales to China, once their biggest wine market, have ground to a halt, resulting in many bargains if you are prepared to shop around.

    What does it taste like?

    - Dense, inky red with choc/mocha, cassis, anise/liquorice, vanilla, cigar box and spicy oak. Nicely layered shiraz with obvious cellaring potential.

    Why it’s a bargain?

    - Terrific quality for less than $20.

    Where can you buy it?

    - Whisky and More $16.99, The Good Wine Co. $17.99, New World $17.99, Countdown $16.

    Food match?

    - Hearty stews and casseroles.

    Will it keep?

    - Yes, good for 5 or 6 years if stored well.

Costco Kirkland Signature Syrah Challenge! (100th Episode, Spicy red wine, Is Syrah the same as Shiraz?)

Who doesn’t love buying wine at Costco? But have you ever wondered if the Costco Kirkland Signature wines are worth their low cost? Wel, that’s what this series of episodes is all about! On our last Costco “date” (and you need to listen in to understand what we mean by that) we picked up one of their Kirkland Signature K Vine Syrahs, and then we bought two other reasonably priced and well reviewed Syrahs to see how it compares. Did it win the challenge? You have to tune in to find out! We also talk about the difference between Syrah and Shiraz (they are the same wine and grape, but there can be some nuanced differences between the two), and the pros and cons of shopping for wine at Costco. And, a little incentive to listen in - Joe actually had some challenges while recording this episode - and we’ll tell you all about it. Let’s just say that Joe owes Carmela BIG TIME! Wines reviewed in this episode: 2021 Kirkland Signature K Vine Syrah Frenchman Hills Vineyard, 2021 J. Lohr Estates South Ridge Syrah, 2021 Mount Langi Ghiran Billi Billi Shiraz

How To Drink Australian! An Interview with Jane Lopes and Jonathan Ross!

How To Drink Australian! An Interview with Jane Lopes and Jonathan Ross!

Want to find the most recent and groundbreaking wine book? Check out what Jane and Jon have created with one of the most incredible and unique wine countries in the world! How to drink Australian is as deep of a dive as you get for wine and at the same time so fun and easy to understand for wine lovers. After reading this book you will change your next wine trip from France or Italy to Australia to discover the beauty in and around the magnificent bottles they produce down under!

    How to Drink Australian

“The landscape of Australian wine is cracking with both new energy and historic traditions that makes it one of the most exciting (we think the most exciting) wine-producing countries in the world right now. But the scholarship on Australian wine hasn’t always matched the output. Think of the dozens (hundreds?) of books that exist on France’s Burgundy alone, a region that could fit inside many of Australia’s individual appellations. Australia hasn’t been afforded the same attention in the world of wine, especially by those living outside its borders. How to Drink Australian is an insider’s and outsider’s guide to Australian wine, both perspectives offering something important to the conversation.”

GSM Wines Demystified! (Red wine blend any wine lover needs to know, Côtes du Rhône, Rhône-style blends)

GSM Wines Demystified! (Red wine blend any wine lover needs to know, Côtes du Rhône, Rhône-style blends)

We never thought we'd say it, but because of this episode, we are now GSM fans! GSM blends are one of the two classic red wine blends known all over the world - so they are definitely something you need to have in your repertoire. But we will admit it - red wine blends can be so tricky because very often the winemaker doesn’t tell you exactly what grapes are in the blend. And if you don’t know the grapes, how can you know the wine?!? Seriously! Made from Grenache, Syrah or Shiraz if you are in Australia, and Mourvèdre (get it - GSM?!?), these wines are produced all over the world, but are most famously from the Côtes du Rhône in France. Juicy and complex, these wines are great with food, and can be appropriate at a fancy dinner and at a summer cookout! If you think you are not a red blend fan, it may be that you just haven’t found the red blend that is right for you! Come along with us, and together we can solve the mystery of GSM! Wines reviewed in this episode: 2017 Domaine Saint Gayan Trescartes Côtes du Rhône, 2017 d'Arenberg The Stump Jump GSM, and 2017 Les Alexandrins Terrasses de l'Eridan Côtes du Rhône.

Wines To Find, Ep 170: Australian Wines & The Struggles Aussie Winemakers are Facing

Wines:  2018 Yalumba Viognier and  2012 Two Hands Bella’s Garden Shiraz

This is a two part series on Australian Wines! In three years, we’ve only done one other episode on Australian wines, that was episode 124. We found when we did that ep there wasn’t a large selection of Aussie wines available at our local stores. We ran into the same issue this time. We were unable  find some wines we were looking for/wanting to taste.

So for two episodes, we’ll be tasting four Australian wines, talking about the state of the Australian wine industry,  what struggles Aussie vintners are facing and why there isn't a large variety of labels being offered at most retailers right now.

Wines To Find, Ep 124: Shiraz, A Summer BBQ Staple

Wines To Find, Ep 124: Shiraz, A Summer BBQ Staple

Wines: Spring & Seed Wine Co. Scarlett Runner Shiraz, 2017 & Elderton Shiraz, 2016

After two and a half years of podcasting about wine, we've finally made it to the Land Down Under! We can't believe it's taken us so long to feature Australian wine on our pod!

With summer bbq season getting under way, we both agreed that one of our summer go to's for years has been Shiraz. Simply the Syrah grape with that little bit of Aussie pizzaz, Shiraz has long been a favorite of both of us - the only excuse we have for not featuring sooner is so many wines, so little time!

We have also included a fun "take you along" to the wine store feature in which we throw it all the way back to EP4, bringing out our inner Chatty Cathy talking with one of our favorite wine sellers as we select this wine.

Listen to learn about Shiraz from Australia, what pairings we encourage and more!
