Costco Kirkland Signature Syrah Challenge! (100th Episode, Spicy red wine, Is Syrah the same as Shiraz?)

Costco Kirkland Signature Syrah Challenge! (100th Episode, Spicy red wine, Is Syrah the same as Shiraz?)

Who doesn’t love buying wine at Costco? But have you ever wondered if the Costco Kirkland Signature wines are worth their low cost? Wel, that’s what this series of episodes is all about! On our last Costco “date” (and you need to listen in to understand what we mean by that) we picked up one of their Kirkland Signature K Vine Syrahs, and then we bought two other reasonably priced and well reviewed Syrahs to see how it compares. Did it win the challenge? You have to tune in to find out! We also talk about the difference between Syrah and Shiraz (they are the same wine and grape, but there can be some nuanced differences between the two), and the pros and cons of shopping for wine at Costco. And, a little incentive to listen in - Joe actually had some challenges while recording this episode - and we’ll tell you all about it. Let’s just say that Joe owes Carmela BIG TIME! Wines reviewed in this episode: 2021 Kirkland Signature K Vine Syrah Frenchman Hills Vineyard, 2021 J. Lohr Estates South Ridge Syrah, 2021 Mount Langi Ghiran Billi Billi Shiraz

Wines for Halloween 2023! (Vine to Bar Chocolate, Wines to Pair with Halloween Party foods, Spooky wine labels)

Not sure if it was the wine or the candy or the fact that we recorded it on Friday the 13th, but we lost our minds in this episode! Halloween is the perfect time for wine (and, heck, what time isn’t perfect for wine?!?!), but not just any wine - spooky wine! Now, we don’t mean that it tastes haunted, what we mean is that it has the perfect combination of a creepy name, a spooky label, and a crowd-pleasing taste. And we think we have found three really good choices! Going to a Halloween party and want to bring a gift of wine? We got you covered! Throwing a Halloween party of your own and trying to figure out what wine to serve? Listen in for great ideas that won’t break the bank! In this episode, we also talk about Vine to Bar chocolate - a delicious chocolate that contains Chardonnay marc - and would be great to serve for the adults who may want something more sophisticated than a fun size candy bar. Join us for this episode - or else! Wines reviewed in this episode: 2019 Prayers of Sinners Red Blend, 2019 Omen Origins Zinfandel, and 2021 Devil's Corner Pinot Noir.

    Ventoux: Next Century Wines

    Ventoux: Next Century Wines

It's a wine region variously described as, 'dynamic', whose wines are undergoing a quality 'revolution', and memorably compared to South Africa's uber-cool Swartland.

It's also got a big old mountain on its picture postcard. Not to mention truffles galore.

    This is Ventoux

And we want to take you on a journey of discovery, to meet the people, explore the places, get a feel for the wines...and generally understand why Ventoux is worth your time and attention.

The mountain, it turns out, is important. It makes this one of the coolest appellations in the southern Rhône, giving the wines freshness and vitality. Peter slogs (metaphorically) up to the peak to prove the point.

It also helps in the ongoing efforts to adapt to climate change.

As for the wines...we dive in, exploring the region's unique whites, rosés and reds, the latter constituting the majority of production. And we explore ways in which the wines are changing and evolving with the future in mind.

We ask why so many outsiders have gravitated to Ventoux, experimenting and collaborating along the way. And we explore the region's value-for-money credentials.

The discussion also touches on lycra, beetroot, Cinsault, wine as theatre, joy and butterflies.

Oh, and did we mention truffles?

This episode is sponsored by AOC Ventoux. The following producers are featured:

    • Domaine du Tix
    • Domaine Aymard
    • Marrenon
    • Chateau Unang
    • Domaine de Fondrèche
    • Chêne Bleu
    • Chateau Pesquié

GSM Wines Demystified! (Red wine blend any wine lover needs to know, Côtes du Rhône, Rhône-style blends)

We never thought we'd say it, but because of this episode, we are now GSM fans! GSM blends are one of the two classic red wine blends known all over the world - so they are definitely something you need to have in your repertoire. But we will admit it - red wine blends can be so tricky because very often the winemaker doesn’t tell you exactly what grapes are in the blend. And if you don’t know the grapes, how can you know the wine?!? Seriously! Made from Grenache, Syrah or Shiraz if you are in Australia, and Mourvèdre (get it - GSM?!?), these wines are produced all over the world, but are most famously from the Côtes du Rhône in France. Juicy and complex, these wines are great with food, and can be appropriate at a fancy dinner and at a summer cookout! If you think you are not a red blend fan, it may be that you just haven’t found the red blend that is right for you! Come along with us, and together we can solve the mystery of GSM! Wines reviewed in this episode: 2017 Domaine Saint Gayan Trescartes Côtes du Rhône, 2017 d'Arenberg The Stump Jump GSM, and 2017 Les Alexandrins Terrasses de l'Eridan Côtes du Rhône.

We'll learn more about the family history and vineyards, Chilean terroir, Carmenere, etc. While chatting, we'll pour three of their delicious wines.

Wines to Drink at an Indian Restaurant (pairing wine and Indian food)

Wines to Drink at an Indian Restaurant (pairing wine and Indian food)

Indian food has been considered notoriously difficult to pair with wine, but we at the Wine Pair Podcast say pshaw to that! In this episode, we pair three wines with Indian food and discover that they work together pretty darn well! We cover what to look for in wines to pair with Indian food - hint, think about acidity, oak, and alcohol content - and we also discuss a little bit about why there may be this perception that Indian food is hard to pair with wine and how wine production is increasing in India. We pair wine with Butter Chicken, Tandoori Chicken Tikka, Dal Maharani, Garlic Naan, and Vegetable Samosas, food we ordered from Cedars restaurant in Seattle. Wines reviewed in this episode: 2021 Cottesbrook Gewurztraminer, 2020 San Gregorio Rosado, and 2018 Milton Park Shiraz.

Ep - 7 Who's Afraid of the Big, Black Bat?

On today's episode we enjoy a bottle of 2018 Syrah from Progress Brewing out of South El Monte, CA.  According to the bottle, the grapes were grown by Lupe and Ruben Solorzano and produced by Stolpman Vinyards

KCET.org has an interesting article about Ruben Solorzano and his journey from migrant farmworker to "The Grape Whisperer."  Make sure to give it a read.

Today we discuss the movie "The Batman" directed by Matt Reeves and starring Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman.  We suggest trying to catch it at your local cinema but will be available on HBO Max starting April 18th.

The Burtech Family Vineyard: A Family Team Making Great Wines

The Burtech Family Vineyard: A Family Team Making Great Wines

After an inspirational trip to Sonoma with family and friends, Burtech Family Vineyard was born. Dominic Burtech did not grow up in the wine industry or as an avid wine drinker, yet his family has created an amazing environment with amazing wines in Encinitas, California.

In this interview, Dominic joins me at a table in their vineyard. The views are incredible as well as the Maile Rosé we are enjoying. The Maile Rosé is the namesake of his daughter who designed the wine right down to the letter and design of the bottle. As someone whose first choice for wine is not Rosé, this is actually one of my favorites.

“You have good grapes, you’re going to make good wine”, is the phrase Dominic quotes during our conversation. It is so true to their philosophy on the Burtech Family Vineyard. Dominic takes so much care of the vines and walks the vineyard daily. He proves that you do not have to have extensive knowledge about wine and grapes to be successful, you just have to be committed to doing the research and asking the right questions.

Dominic left his job in the construction world to open up this vineyard and winery. Determined, passionate, and eager to learn, he has made it happen, even though the wild ride of 2020. For others thinking of pursuing this same dream, Dominic’s advice is to go for it with excitement and good intentions. For those that live locally, you have to visit this amazing vineyard and family. If not, be sure to check out the Burtech Family Vineyard online, they ship!

    What’s Inside:

    • The background of The Burtech Family Vineyard.
    • How Dominic and his family work together on their wines.
    • Advice on challenges and inspiration for future vineyard owners.
