The two companies at the heart of the semiconductor industry

The two companies at the heart of the semiconductor industry

The world as we know it today runs on silicon-based chips. Your phone, computer, amplifier for planar magnetic headphones, Xbox... Even cars, machines that control other complicated machines in factories, planes and more. All run on chips.

    But who makes these?
Yes, you might have heard of names like Intel and Qualcomm who do make chips... Or do they?

Join the Simblified gang as they talk about semiconductors and the process by which they're made. Importantly, they speak about TSMC and ASML, two companies without whom we'd still probably all be using a landline. Creditably, they make the "conductor collects tickets" joke only once in the show. Also, this show features a unique plug from Chuck's other show, The Origin of Things, as he did an episode on TSMC there.

All in all, a fun episode that'll bring back nightmares from some engineering classes, while also teaching you something new about the fun world of semiconductors!

    feat. Deepak Gopalakrishanan

On this episode, Cyrus is joined by Deepak Gopalakrishnan, aka Chuck, to talk about Cyrus' dosa packed in plastic, why Deepak is called Chuck, and about the three very different podcasts that he hosts - Simblified, The Origin of Things, and his new podcast 'Getting Meta'. Cyrus and Chuck discuss what Getting Meta is about, how the idea came together, exploring successful people's thinking processes and habits, the aim being that anybody else from any other field can apply these in their own lives, and tons more.

They also talk about who Chuck's dream guest on Getting Meta would be, butter chicken dosa being a symbol of national integration, the Butter Chicken Cheese Paneer Frankie that Silverie recommends, the new Maharashtra government electric vehicle policy, a lots lots more! Bonus Episode: Getting Meta with Amit Varma

Bonus Episode: Getting Meta with Amit Varma
Hello there! I'm proud to announce a new show that I've started, Getting Meta. It's a show on productivity, mental models, life hacks and stuff eked out with conversations with some very smart people. These include Amit Varma (host, The Seen & The Unseen), Krish Ashok (the legendary internet humorist), Utsav Mamoria (who runs Postcards from Nowhere), Meeta Malhotra, a former partner at one of India's leading design firms and a serial entrepreneur, Dhimant Parekh (the founder & CEO of The Better India), Rohan Joshi (comedian), and more.

I'd love to share the first interview here with you! It's my chat with writer and podcaster, Amit Varma. It was a perfect way to start my new show, as Amit's always been a supporter of what I do and runs what is probably India's finest podcast today. In this interview, we come up with the name for the show, Getting Meta, together! I hope you enjoy this chat, and like it enough to subscribe to the show!

Amit Varma : Writer and Podcaster

Amit Varma : Writer and Podcaster
For the first ever interview of this podcast, I had the honour of interviewing Amit Varma.

Amit needs no introduction to those who listen to Indian podcasts. His show, The Seen & The Unseen, has evolved from an experiment to one of the finest, best-researched and most widely-heard podcasts in the country. Before this, Amit made his name as a blogger, journalist and cricket writer. At the time of recording and release of this episode, he also runs a podcasting and writing course. He’s also very fond of saying “multitudes”.

In this episode, Amit and I discuss:
What would you do if you had just a year left to live?
Gathering as many 'mental dots' as you can and joining them.
Evolving mediums and why content > form
Lots of advice for aspiring (and current!) content creators
Early mistakes and learning from them
Working towards your ideal self & the compounding power of habits
How a selfie stick was responsible for The Seen & The Unseen (no joke!)
And of course, we name this very podcast at the very end!

References made during the show, not in order:

    About this podcast & host
Getting Meta is a show hosted by me, Deepak Gopalakrishnan (or Chuck, as the world calls me). In this show, I speak to some very smart people to unravel their habits, thought processes, tools and mental models - which can then be applied by anyone, from any field. The show focuses less on their achievements or field, and more on them as a person and their ways of thinking - hence, I get meta with them. Each episode aims to inspire, entertain and leave you with questions to ask yourself, frameworks to apply and good content to check out. There will be an initial season of 12 weekly episodes (of which 10 are interviews), starting May 2021, and then a subsequent season, later in the year. This is my third show, following Simblified (comedy + topical) and The Origin of Things (trivia + storytelling).

As for me, I’m a freelancer who does a bunch of things, and am obsessed with productivity and optimising time. I consider myself very imperfect at that, putting me in an ideal position to host this show. I’m interested in a bunch of things: technology’s impact on culture, the internet and digital marketing, travel and cycling, and of course, rock and metal.

    Ep. 201: Guess Who's Back? (Part 2)

    Ep. 201: Guess Who's Back? (Part 2)

The gang is back for one last time for the second and final 200th episode of Simblified. Chuck, Naren, Srikeit, and Tony pick up from where they left off in the previous episode and try to Simblify sophisticated things like BigTech and Man's search for meaning. Meanwhile, the banter continues to be unsophisticated. Oh! And there's a surprise at the end of the episode.

Add one part news, one part bad jokes, one part Wikipedia research, one part cult references from spending too much time on the internet, one part Wodehouse quotes, and one part quality puns, and you get Simblified.
A weekly podcast to help you appear smarter, to an audience that knows no less! Your four hosts - Chuck, Naren, Srikeit and Tony attempt to deconstruct topics with humour (conditions apply). Fans of the show have described it as "fun conversations with relatable folks", "irreverent humour", "the funniest thing to come out of Malad West" and "if I give you a good review will you please let me go".
Started in 2016 as a creative outlet, Simblified now has over 200 episodes, including some live ones, and some with guests who are much smarter than the hosts. Welcome to the world of Simblified!

Bonus Episode: Thank you (and I'd love to hear from you)

A non-story about gratitude, feedback and one heck of a ramble
I would love to hear from you, about what you think of The Origin of Things. You guys make this show happen, really :)

The Origin of Things is a weekly short-format podcast run by Deepak Gopalakrishnan aka Chuck.
Each episode deals with the origin of a popular brand, but with the name of the brand (and often, category) revealed only at the end - hence adding a bit of drama, keeping the listener guessing.

Ep. 172: Taking 'The Social Leap' of Faith

Ep. 172: Taking 'The Social Leap' of Faith

Naren has read a fascinating book called 'The Social Leap' by William Von Hippel which helps understand the connection between evolution and our social behaviour today. Joining Naren through this transformative journey with additional insights are Tony and Srikeit. With lack of Wikipedia summaries available, the ultracrepidarians talk about evolutionary titbits like why chimps have larger testes than gorillas, the truth about lice and how humans have evolved socially as a species.

We'd love it if you could leave a rating on Apple Podcasts - it really helps boost visibility and our egos.

    Simblified is:
An Indian podcast that takes things that happen around us and deconstructs them in a manner you can understand and impress your colleagues, next interviewer, date or cat. Run by four folks seeking a return to the "good ol' days of Twitter" - Chuck, Naren, Srikeit & Tony, Simblified has the guarantee of "if we can understand it, you can!" and proceeds to look at everything from technology to politics to weird phenomena to questions you never knew you wanted to be answered. Along the way, you'll hear lots of bad jokes, facts, PG Wodehouse references, and more bad jokes. Hopefully, you'll have a laugh.

Ep. 169: The Stoic Way Of Life

Ep. 169: The Stoic Way Of Life

There have been several stoic philosophers like Seneca the Younger, Marcus Aurelius & Epictetus (Jiggles) who have influenced the school of Hellenistic philosophy. What is stoicism you may ask? How does one become a stoic? Do we suffer more often in imagination than in reality? To put your curiosity out of misery, Naren, Chuck & Tony explain the philosophy and history of stoicism and how one can incorporate stoicism as a way of life.

    Ep. 168: Consumed in moderation

    Ep. 168: Consumed in moderation

Facebook, the social network everyone loves to hate has been grappling with the free speech v/s content moderation conundrum for several years now. In the first half of 2020, they are going beyond "Community Standards" and establishing an oversight board. The Simblified gang look at what this 'Supreme Court' looks like and how it might turn out as they discuss Facebook's winter of diss content.

    Ep. 165: Welcome, Tony

    Ep. 165: Welcome, Tony

Simblified upgraded from a rusty bike to a creaky autorickshaw when we got Srikeit on as a 3rd host a few years ago, and now we've traded our beloved tuk-tuk to a sleek electric car zippin' down the highways, turning heads and causing admiration, all while delighting onlookers and generally improving lives of everyone who happens to be within 3 sq km of it. Um, well - at least that's what we told Tony in the brochure. So yes, we have decided to get Tony Sebastian on as our 4th co-host. Fans will remember him as a frequent guest on year-end episodes, and that one time he told us about crosswords. We thought we'd spend an episode talking about him and his past, upbringing and his adorable Mallu accent but instead we do a lot of nonsense ramble instead. It's still a highly entertaining "episode". So say hello to the one and only Tony Sebastian!

    NEW TO SIMBLIFIED?

Ep. 164: The 2019 recap part 4: Amazon, Brexit, Gully Boy

And finally, we're at part 4 of the year-end review, even though by the time you hear this episode, 1/12th of 2020 is already over. Hopefully, your resolutions aren't!

This is the last part of the 2019 review (phew, finally!). While we've done a ton of topical Simblification, we thought we'd have a look at some of the major themes that kept coming back to bite us in the arse in 2019. The Simblified gang have a freewheeling, absolutely unscripted conversation on some key topics that kept hitting headlines through the year (and... made many heads fall on desks, too). We'd reveal the topics in this description, but... Then what's the fun, right? Each episode features 5-6 topics which our team of hosts discusses. We all learn something new along the way and hope you do, too (and yes, there are many many bad jokes too).

And yes by now you've grown familiar to the voice of Tony Sebastian, our new co-host! Say hello! Chuck & Srikeit make up your old hosts, while Naren is unfortunately AWOL.

Oooh, this is a loaded episode!

The Simblified gang carries on with part 3 of their 2019 review even though by the time you hear this we're well into the crap 2020 will bring. While we've done a ton of topical Simblification, we thought we'd have a look at some of the major themes that kept coming back to bite us in the arse in 2019. Ep. 122 (Rebroadcasting): Do you really need civics? Ft. Meghnad & Shreyas from "How to Citizen"

Yes, back in school, Civics was like the token black guy of social studies. Who had time to learn about elected officials while deciduous trees and various dates were waiting to be mugged up!

But as we grow older, wiser and more responsible, we find ourselves using the things we were supposed to study in 7th standard more and more useful (no, trigonometry, not you). Meghnad and Shreyas, hosts of a new podcast called "How to Citizen" tell us about this and how we can become better citizens (or at least, better informed while trolling people on Twitter). This is an eye-opening episode and honestly, we could have gone on yammering for another few hours on the topic - but you can hear M&S do that in their show (link below). We also talk about the problems of social studies pedagogy, and go through several of our own experiences and biases. Super chat it was and we hope you enjoy it as well.

    Ep. 157: Dream of para-para-Paraprosdokian

    Ep. 157: Dream of para-para-Paraprosdokian

On this light-hearted shortie, Srikeit and Naren simblify the figure of speech, Paraprosdokian. Yes, that's one heck of a tongue twister. Join them in this episode as they give you humourous examples and guide you to unexpect the expected.

NEW TO SIMBLIFIED? It's an Indian podcast - probably the best to come from Malad West - that takes things that happen around us, and deconstructs them in a language you can understand, often surmounting several puns and PG Wodehouse references along the way. We aim to make you appear smarter during parties, job interviews, and dates.

    Your hosts (and Twitter / Instagram handles) are Chuck (@chuck_gopal / @chuckofalltrades), Srikeit (@srikeit, @srikeit) and Naren (@shenoyn, @shenoynv).

    Ep. 156: Behavioural Addiction

    Ep. 156: Behavioural Addiction

After a series of celebrating our milestone, we are back to continue our normal episodes with mildy researched topics and a little banter, not that it was any different previously. All banter aside, this week, we dive deep into the sensitive topic of behavioural addiction. Srikeit and Naren simblify what behavioural addiction is, the neurochemistry of the brain and how we can help someone suffering from behavioural addiction.

Ep. 155: The Final 150th episode

Ep. 155: The Final 150th episode

We are finally done with our 150th episode special, yes we swear this time it's over and it took us only 6 parts to end it. We hope that you enjoyed this interactive journey and would like to thank each and every one of you who took the time to write to us and patiently listened throughout this series. It has been an amazing journey so far! Alright, enough with the acceptance award speech and let's get to what we have for you this week!

We have dedicated this entire episode to talk about brand conglomerates such as Luxottica, Disney, General Motors, Unilever etc. What is a conglomerate and how many brands fall under these conglomerates which we aren't aware of?

Thank you Sivaram (@fickleberryhunn) for submitting your question which made this week's episode!
