Matteo Franceschetti - Unlocking the Secrets to a Perfect Night's Sleep

Our guest this week is Matteo Franceschetti.

An athlete his entire life, Matteo has always been obsessed with performance. First, it was athletics. Then business. Now, sleep. The first two pursuits - athletics and business - lead to many sleepless nights, rationalized by the pursuit of record performance. It was Matteo’s quest for more restorative sleep, in fact, that led him to quit his previous life and launch Eight Sleep, a company dedicated to fueling human potential through optimal sleep, and to turning the bed into a seamless health platform for improved health, performance, and longevity.

    Action Plan

This week it’s all about SLEEP - something I’ve been learning so much about ever since I recorded this conversation with Matteo.  Sleep impacts everything from focus and memory retention, to risk of all sorts of mental health disorders, body composition, cancer risk, life expectancy - you name it, sleep effects it. I've been reading the book Why We Sleep , and in the book the author, Matthew Walker, even goes to far as to posit the question - “While most people ask - why did living organisms begin sleeping? - I think the more pertinent question may be why did we ever wake up”. Life is traumatic. Sleep is restorative. You action plan this week is incredibly simple - Get 7.5 hours or more of sleep every night this week if at all possible. This means giving yourself a sleep opportunity of closer to 8.5 hours of sleep - meaning about 8.5 hours of time in bed to achieve the 7.5 hours of sleep. And just take note of ALL the wonderful things you feel at the end of the week. While you’re getting all this wonderfully restorative rest - go check out EightSleep.com and, if you’re feeling like you really want to put all your newfound energy and focus to work - Check out “Why We Sleep” by Matthew Walker. Do these things and You’ll never look at your bed the same way again!

Whats Next - That’s it for this week. Make sure you’re subscribed to this podcast so that you don’t miss next week’s episode with Cory Camp, founder of Forever Athlete, and a conversation about human connection, training for a marathon, getting uncomfortable, the struggles that athletes face when their careers come to an end.

That’s it for this week.  Until next time - we wish you Strength and Good Health.

Vertical Farming, Agricultural Sensors & The Sleep Industry

Vertical Farming, Agricultural Sensors & The Sleep Industry

Welcome to another episode of Halo Drop, this one’s a real eclectic mix for you. We’ve got everything from vertical farming at home, to agricultural sensors, to the best startup Indian mattress companies.

But first - what can you do to not be dependent on the supply chain? You can start by growing your own foods, in vertical farming.

“Lettuce and basil are super easy to grow, I started growing tomatoes and have been growing them for two months… The tomatoes you grow at home are a lot more robust and different than what you get in the store. What's in a grocery store is genetically modified to be exactly what people want.”

Next, as we're moving and shifting into this always connected, always on world, how do you get all this data collected faster and easier? Sensors are the answer. And what is going to be the new use case for these things? One is agricultural tech.

“There's this big push now towards agriculture. There's a bunch of companies that are trying to really figure out how do you sense how your farm or your produce is doing, so you can then further optimize it?”

Another is startups offering sleep solutions online.

“The mattress industry was worth over $27 billion in 2017. And it's going to reach over $43 billion in 2024.”

To find out more, don’t miss this latest installment of Halo Drop!

The Journey of sleep with Mollie McGlocklin

The Journey of sleep with Mollie McGlocklin

Braving the Journey talks this week with Mollie McGlocklin. Mollie is the creator of Sleep Is A Skill, a company that optimizes people’s sleep through a unique blend of technology, accountability, and behavioral change. The company was born from “scratching her own itch” after a lifetime of poor sleep habits culminated into a mega-challenging bout of insomnia for months without end. With a background in psychology & human behavior, she went down the rabbit hole to solve her sleep disturbances without sleeping aids. She became fascinated with chronobiology, and by extension, its practical applications to restore a state of homeostasis not only to her sleep but also to her life as a whole. She began sharing what she discovered with other sleep sufferers and became blown away by the power of this work at scale. Today, she’s worked with hundreds of people to improve their sleep by strengthening their circadian rhythm. She’s now spent the past three years traveling the world to test sleep quality in different environments across the globe and sharing what she’s discovered. Knowing the difference between a life with sleep and without, she’s now dedicated her life to sharing the forgotten skill set of sleep.

011: Ariel Garten, co-founder of Muse: The Brain Sensing headband, teaches us how to use neurofeedback for emotional regulation and to improve sleep.

    EPISODE SUMMARY:

    In this episode, we discuss:

🧠Ariel Garten’s story on how she created the Muse

🧠Why Ariel evolved this product beyond meditation to more specifically focus on sleep

🧠Success stories of people using neurofeedback through the Muse at night can transform persistent or chronic sleep difficulties

🧠A detailed discussion of the brain and its transitions from an awake state to a sleep state, into various stages while we are asleep.

    🧠Discussions on brainwave activities

🧠Ariel’s insights as to the ability for meditation to help support high quality sleep architecture. Speculations, but unfortunately, we’re not there yet to understand the impact.

🧠Ariel’s wisdom for those who feel they cannot mediate or get more stressed during mediation. That was precisely why she invented the Muse!

🧠Why the Muse can be helpful for women at various parts of their cycle

🧠Ariel helps us understand why we can’t just look at sleep stages from wearables on the wrist or hand to get insight and accuracy to as much as our gold standard as we can when it’s on the brain.

    MORE ON ARIEL:

Ariel Garten is probably one of the most interesting people you will meet. She is trained as a psychotherapist and neuroscientist, is a mom, former fashion designer, and the co-founder and visionary of an amazing and highly successful tech start-up Muse.

Muse tracks your brain during meditation to give you real-time feedback on your meditation, guiding you into the “zone” and solving the problem most of us have when starting a meditation practice. Muse lets you know when you are doing it right. Muse S is also designed to help you fall asleep faster.

When Ariel is not reading brains (literally) or investing in, inspiring, and advising other start-ups and women in biz, you can find her on stages across the world, from TED to MIT to SXSW. She inspires people to understand that they can accomplish anything they want by learning what goes on in their own minds.

Ariel is also the co-host of the Untangle Podcast.
