Beyond sleep tracking - the future of sleep technology

Beyond sleep tracking - the future of sleep technology

Only a few years ago, the phrase consumer sleep technology was synonymous with sleep trackers, devices that monitor your nocturnal behaviours to give you insights into the mysteries of your non-waking hours.

Fast forward to 2021, where we're in the middle of an innovation explosion of all type of gadgets, wearables, apps, smart home technologies which not only track, but also actively attempt to promote better sleep.

In today's episode we talk to friend of the podcast, Dr Michael Grandner about this important distinction between sleep technology that measures, and tech that intervenes in our sleep.

Plus we explore some of the latest science-backed sleep devices that utilise light, sound, temperature and other esoteric techniques with strange acronyms like PEMF, TDCS, all in the mission to improve our sleep.

Dr Grandner helps us to understand where the science is at with all of the latest sleep-tech trends, including digital sleep coaching, Sp02 monitoring, light therapy wearables, bed cooling tech,  and more.

    This episode's guest:

011: Ariel Garten, co-founder of Muse: The Brain Sensing headband, teaches us how to use neurofeedback for emotional regulation and to improve sleep.

    EPISODE SUMMARY:

    In this episode, we discuss:

🧠Ariel Garten’s story on how she created the Muse

🧠Why Ariel evolved this product beyond meditation to more specifically focus on sleep

🧠Success stories of people using neurofeedback through the Muse at night can transform persistent or chronic sleep difficulties

🧠A detailed discussion of the brain and its transitions from an awake state to a sleep state, into various stages while we are asleep.

    🧠Discussions on brainwave activities

🧠Ariel’s insights as to the ability for meditation to help support high quality sleep architecture. Speculations, but unfortunately, we’re not there yet to understand the impact.

🧠Ariel’s wisdom for those who feel they cannot mediate or get more stressed during mediation. That was precisely why she invented the Muse!

🧠Why the Muse can be helpful for women at various parts of their cycle

🧠Ariel helps us understand why we can’t just look at sleep stages from wearables on the wrist or hand to get insight and accuracy to as much as our gold standard as we can when it’s on the brain.

    MORE ON ARIEL:

Ariel Garten is probably one of the most interesting people you will meet. She is trained as a psychotherapist and neuroscientist, is a mom, former fashion designer, and the co-founder and visionary of an amazing and highly successful tech start-up Muse.

Muse tracks your brain during meditation to give you real-time feedback on your meditation, guiding you into the “zone” and solving the problem most of us have when starting a meditation practice. Muse lets you know when you are doing it right. Muse S is also designed to help you fall asleep faster.

When Ariel is not reading brains (literally) or investing in, inspiring, and advising other start-ups and women in biz, you can find her on stages across the world, from TED to MIT to SXSW. She inspires people to understand that they can accomplish anything they want by learning what goes on in their own minds.

Ariel is also the co-host of the Untangle Podcast.

The great sleep tracking debate - Part 2

What are the barriers for consumer sleep wearables being taken seriously as accurate, reliable sleep measurement tools by the research and clinical communities?

In the second part of this discussion we talk about the problems of proprietary algorithms, raw data access, and the challenges that need to be met by both science and commerce.

41:37 Fitbit, NIH and big data initiatives and future potential

How accurate is your sleep tracker? Are consumer sleep wearables good enough to used for research and clinical purposes? Join us as we navigate the complex issues surrounding marketing claims, scientific validation, reliability, raw data and why 'black boxes' technology is an impediment to research.

In this first instalment of a 2-part episode, we talk about the rapid improvement that consumer sleep tracker have made in a short amount of time, and how, compared to expensive validated technology like actigraphy, could potentially unleash powerful new ways to advance sleep science.

    This episode’s guest:

Jesse Cook is a doctoral student within the Clinical Psychology program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison under the primary mentoring of David Plante, MD, PhD.
Previously, he completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Arizona, whereby he assisted in projects directed by Dr Richard Bootzin.Jesse's research primarily focus on the assessment and treatment of persons with unexplained excessive daytime sleepiness.

Additionally, he has published multiple papers evaluating the utility and ability of wearable consumer technologies as a sleep assessor, relative to PSG.
