Are “stand your ground” laws helping people get away with murder? Thirty-eight US states have laws allowing people the right to use deadly force if they claim to be in fear of their lives. Critics call them "shoot first" laws. Al Jazeera’s documentary program Fault Lines joins us to explore two homicide cases and two families’ fights for answers.

Over the 4th of July weekend in 2011, a carload of 19 and 20 year old set out for a party somewhere in Antelope Lake, California.  Unable to find the party, they started to make their way home.  On the way, the encountered an obnoxious 'no trespassing' sign illuminated by some solar lights.  Feeling like the sign was some sort of stupid joke, they decided to take the sign down and steal one of the lights.  The following night, they tired heading out to Antelope Lake again for another party, hoping to find it this time.  Along the way, they decided to stop by the no trespassing sign again ...but this time, the homeowner was waiting for them...

The Tragic 1999 Shooting Death Of Halloween Prankster 17 Year Old Brandon Ketsdever

This is a remastered re-release of a bonus episode from October of 2018 entitled The Tale of the Castle Doctrine.  I was asked to take the episode down.  It was one that was suggested to me by a listener.  But someone closely related to the story took issue with the episode, so I pulled the version where I thanked the listener who recommended this to me and I am re-recording it renaming it the Tale of Brandon Ketsdever and the Castle Doctrine.  I feel these cases are important lessons, especially for young people who might be getting into mischief or pranking.  It is a cautionary tale and serves as a reminder that our kids and young people need to think about the things they do, make good choices, use better judgement, and that they are not immortal.

More than 37 states in the US allow a person to use deadly force against an intruder or attacker under the guise that they are defending themselves or their property. This is due to what are called  “Stand Your Ground'' laws-- but those laws are highly controversial. In this episode, hosts Kelly and JJ are joined by three amazing guests: Alyssa Ackbar, the legislative coordinator for Team ENOUGH’s Florida Lobbying Collective and a state director with March For Our Lives, as well as part of their “Youth Congress''; Dr. Caroline Light, Director of Undergraduate Studies and Senior Lecturer on Studies of Women, Gender, and Sexuality at Harvard -- who also wrote the book Stand Your Ground: A History of America’s Love Affair with Lethal Self-Defense; and Dr. John Roman, a senior fellow in the Economics, Justice and Society Group at NORC at the University of Chicago who has extensive experience on the effect race plays in “Stand Your Ground'' defenses. Together, we are discussing the recent development with Stand Your Ground laws and how these laws have the potential to cause more harm than good.
