    Primal Fear feat. Jesse Hawken

    Primal Fear feat. Jesse Hawken

    Jesse Hawken, host of Junk Filter Podcast, returns to the show to discuss 'Primal Fear'. The film is a taut piece of middlebrow entertainment which offers maximum reward as a cable classic.

    We discuss the film's two standout performances - one from aging handsome guy Richard Gere as a hotshot attorney looking for his next big break, the other from then-newcomer Edward Norton who took audiences by storm and wound up on the short list of actors nominate for an Academy Award for their very first film performance. Then, we talk the movie's famous twist ending, and the way that it betrays an uncomfortably reactionary streak that resonated with audiences in mid-90s America. Finally, we have some words about the death of the midbudget cable classic, and look at the current state of the industry vis-a-vis the tandem strike efforts from the WGA and SAG-AFTRA.

    The Legion, Masked and Anonymous, Mickey Rourke film discussion

    The Legion, Masked and Anonymous, Mickey Rourke film discussion

    A pair of equally unknown films from the Mickey oeuvre that I share details about;

    Masked and Anonymous (2003) has an all star cast and an appearance by Mickey Rourke that fares quite well, in particular sharing the screen with a smiling Bob Dylan.
    Cast includes, Jeff Bridges, Penelope Cruz, Joh Goodman, Christian Slater, Bruce Dern, Jessica Lange and more.

    The Legion (2019) additionally known as (Legionnaire's Trail) is based on a true story but is it a Roman soldier adventure worth watching?
    having now seen it twice, you be the judge after you listen to me discussing details including Mickey Rourke sporting fresh nails;
    also an eye patch remarkably similar to his Warhunt (2022) costume accessory.

    S06E02: Traffic

    S06E02: Traffic
    Zack Handlen joins us for 2000's Soderbergh Oscar magnet Traffic, which at least one of your co-hosts forgot Dennis Quaid was even in, much less that he played a sleazy Mob-fixer lawyer whose wardrobe erodes really weirdly over the 2.5-hour runtime. Is Quaid miscast? Is this the last time we'll contend with Topher Grace on this podcast? Which plotline is the weakest here, and does Traffic suffer from breaking ground we've seen covered a thousand times since thanks TO Traffic? All these questions, plus '50s-pulp scaremongering, 17-year-old dickheads who read too much, who "invented" Mexico As Yellow, and making our peace with the word "propulsive." Crank us up to jam the bug: it's an all-new Quaid In Full. Running Scared (1986)

    Running Scared (1986)

    Gregory Hines and Billy Crystal play two wise-cracking Chicago cops who are trying to take down the local drug kingpin played by Jimmy Smits...

    But honestly….the plot doesn’t really matter in this as it’s ALL about the chemistry between our two leads, along with some very memorable action sequences.

    This ‘80’s action romp is directed by Peter Hyams while also starring ‘80’s mainstays Dan Hedaya, Darlene Fluegel, and Steven Bauer – it might very well be among the best buddy cop movies ever!

    Ep. 39: Running Scared (1986)

    Ep. 39: Running Scared (1986)

    Zach & Zo witness the mean streets of Chicago where two police detectives try to nail a would be drug kingpin before they retire to Key West, Florida to open up a bar and, hopefully, get robbed a lot. Seriously, they actually hope that their bar gets robbed so that they can act like police and fight criminals while bartending.  Zach & Zo also witness the infectious, positive chemistry by the two lead actors Gregory Hines and Billy Chrystal. This is an action comedy that is not to be missed!

    THE BEAST: An Overlooked Classic War Film from 1988

    THE BEAST: An Overlooked Classic War Film from 1988

    The Cinemondo gang takes a recommendation from a listener named Nick who insisted that we watch THE BEAST, a war movie from 1988 directed by Kevin Reynolds and starring Steven Bauer, Jason Patric and Stephen Baldwin. He claims it’s great. An overlooked gem. An underrated and forgotten classic. Sounds like Cinemondo material, for sure. And guess what? Nick was right.

    This is a film that has everything. It’s a bit violent, as war films tend to be, but this one’s definitely about the characters and the interactions between cultures. We’ve got a Russian tank team and a group of Afghani mujahideen fighters going after each other in the desert. It’s part war film, part isolation horror and definitely full of great moments, nicely directed by Kevin Reynolds. You do have to accept the slight strangeness of the Russian tank crew speaking perfect English; they don’t even do Russian accents, but once you get past that, you’re in. Great cast, a harrowing story and according to various sources, it’s pretty accurate with the military gear and ops.There is a pretty memorably violent scene near the beginning and the usual amount of violence you might expect from a war film, but it’s definitely worth a watch, even if you’re not into war movies

    SCARFACE (1983)

    SCARFACE (1983)

    Aya says hello WITH her little friend Kevin to Brian De Palma's SCARFACE, arguably the "genome" of the bro-cannon from way back in 1983.

    SCARFACE exists more as a meme than a film in 2020, but does that excuse its dated cultural depictions? Can you ever get over Al Pacino's Cuban accent? Is SCARFACE the #2 Dad movie? Listen in as Aya takes on Tony Montana and his bros in this quintessential crime epic.

    Oliver Stone was kicking a cocaine habit while writing it, how could it not be fun?!!
