EP:195 Suicide Prevention, Crisis Intervention & Community Policing

We're grateful to have Charles Stamper, a former Air Force member, law enforcement officer, and current Operations Manager for the Sergeant Fox Suicide Prevention Grant Program, as our guest. Charles' military service, coupled with his law enforcement experience, has given him a unique perspective on suicide prevention. His insights, drawing from his years in the Air Force and his current role with the Sergeant Fox Suicide Prevention Grant Program, offer an eye-opening look into the world of crisis intervention.

In our discussion, Charles paints a picture of the Sergeant Fox Suicide Prevention Grant Program's role in preventing crisis situations. He discusses the concept of Crisis Intervention Team Training (CIT), a cornerstone of community policing that promotes de-escalation and empathetic listening.

As we wrap up, Charles underscores the significance of the newly implemented 988 suicide prevention number and stresses veterans and all those struggling with mental health issues to reach out when they feel overwhelmed, depressed, lonely, or suicidal.  Join us in this extremely important conversation that touches so many.

    • Corbin had to lean on these tools to help him to overcome a lifetime of trauma he has experienced.

Using These Four Questions To Prevent Teen Suicide | Jackie Simmons, Author | Back To School & Off To College Series

Using These Four Questions To Prevent Teen Suicide | Jackie Simmons, Author | Back To School & Off To College Series

Welcome to the first in our series on "Back to School & Off to College".

Every 40 seconds someone takes their own life according to the World Health Organization. Suicide is the second-leading cause of death among people aged 15 to 24 in the U.S. and Nearly 20% of high school students report serious thoughts of suicide and 9% have made an attempt to take their lives.

My guest today, author Jackie Simmons, and her daughters are working to change those numbers. Through founding the Teen Suicide Prevention Society, they are working to educate parents to have"The Suicide Talk" with their teens and young adults regardless of whether or not they see signs of struggle.

In this episode Jackie takes us through this talk, the importance of it, and how it can possibly save your teen or young adult's life. She is showing us how normalizing talk around suicide is the only way to pre-empt it.

    In this episode we discuss:

    1. Why the "suicide talk" is so important.
    2. What it looks like and how it works.
    3. How many numbers of people are affected from one suicide or attempted suicide.
    4. Why pre-empting suicide with open dialogue is so important.
    5. How parents "miss" the signs of their children's struggle.
    6. The best prevention tool.
    7. How to suicide proof.
    8. How the talk and language around suicide is being normalized and why it's a good thing.
    9. Who is at risk of suicide?
    10. Knowing the best time to have the suicide talk.

I hope that you will search out Jackie at the free tools she has available. You can find them at

Suicide, Addiction & Healing: Rob Imbeault's Memoir "Before I Leave You" Gives Us Hope

Suicide, Addiction & Healing: Rob Imbeault's Memoir "Before I Leave You" Gives Us Hope

Within hours of it's release Tuesday morning, Rob Imbault's book " Before I Leave You: A Memoir on Suicide, Addiction and Healing" hit #1 on Amazon in a number of categories. Simply amazing...

We sat down for the podcast taping a number of weeks ago, before COVID was even on the radar for Rob's first interview EVER about his story. I wanted to time this podcast with the book release.

What started as a suicide note- originally meant as a goodbye letter by Rob turned into a book, an apology, therapy and a healing tool to turn things around.

This book is a redemption story, an introduction into repressed memory and childhood trauma, a harsh reality of the darker side of Las Vegas- and a reality check of how addicts manage to hide their struggle, their troubles and their illness from colleagues, family and friends.

Some of you may be familiar with Rob’s name as he was one of the founding partners for Assent Compliance, helping build a multi, multi million dollar company involved in revolutionizing supply chain data collection and risk management - all while struggling with substance abuse issues.

We talk about his healing, his early practices of meditation, a clean lifestyle and diet, yoga, writing and books. Now a married father of two- this story gives you hope, knowledge and an understanding of the internal battle people face and how they find the courage to push through.

I also worked with Rob to help prepare him for his media launch and book tour. I am grateful for the new friendship which grew from that.

11 Adam Amdur: Patient Advocacy is Vital

Today we're talking to ASAA's Chief Patient officer, Adam Amdur.

Adam is an “innovative patient advocate”. He was diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in 2008, more than thirty years after he first showed symptoms. As he struggled to learn how to manage his treatment, he was able to successfully identify and get treatment for his then two-year-old daughter and wife as well as many others. He joined the ASAA in 2012, leading the association’s evolution from a twenty-five-year-old physician-run organization into an entrepreneurial, patient-driven, public-health advocacy association.
