Is Your "Self Care" Actually Self Indulgence?

What is the difference between Self Indulgence and Self Care? Today I give some personal life examples and discuss different ways I've interacted with the concept of "taking care of yourself" when it comes to mental health.

How to take care of yourself as you're growing your business, with John J. Fenton

How to take care of yourself as you're growing your business, with John J. Fenton

It's easy to get lost in the blur of what needs to get done when you're running a growing business. You feel constantly pressed for time because at any given moment, there is another call to answer, meeting to attend, or fire to put out.

The overwhelm is real, and many driven founders like you, who are goal-oriented and hell-bent on achieving success, will (in desperation) resort to multitasking and overworking.

It's a highly stressful situation, leading to eventual burnout and possible major health issues.

When you're forever stuck in the hustle, your productivity drops, and it will harm your revenues too.

Thankfully, there is an escape plan from this cycle of hectic work, frantic stress, and mental exhaustion.

Being Mindful can help you create calm so you can be fully present and aware of what is happening at the moment and, of course, how you're feeling. Mindfulness will also empower you to respond to the daily chaos of your work environment positively and effectively so you can continue to grow your business sustainably.

In this episode of Help, My Business is Growing, CEO Sensei and mentor John Fenton, share how practicing mindfulness daily, will make you a more confident and effective leader. He reveals the many benefits of breathing exercises and intentional meditation, including how they can help us center ourselves and rediscover our focus and clarity.

John J. Fenton is a  Brain Management Consultant who works with CEOs who love growing their business and leading their teams but hate all the stress these bring. He is also an award-winning speaker, best-selling author, and mentor to C-Suite Executives, helping them achieve more and be the best leaders they can be.

In this week's episode, we discuss:

2:56 What does the statement "to do more, we actually have to do less" mean, and how does this work in practice?

6:31 When is that pivotal moment when you can or have to say, "Okay, I am spinning out of control here. I have to slow down."?

9:23 How would one start small in becoming more mindful? Are there certain steps to help someone who's never done meditation, knows nothing about Tai Chi or mindfulness?

33:16 How do you center yourself once again? Is there a specific tip or trick that you use when you get really angry or triggered by something?

43:00 What are the next tangible steps that people can take in the next week to get their organizations to become more mindful?

#76 | Alone Time Can Be Healing

#76 | Alone Time Can Be Healing

In this week's episode, Rachel shares about her trip to Iowa when she picked up her new car. At first, she's a bit hesitant to travel alone as she thinks about her responsibilities as a mom and a wife.

She continues sharing a story about when she used to live in Laramie with her roommate. They went to Vedauwoo where they met two hitchhikers who had an unfortunate experience. Rachel and her roommate helped them by giving them a ride to their apartment to be able to make phone calls to help them on the next steps of their journey.

She also shares how she traveled alone to Eugene Oregon back in 1998. She only got $125 cash, no credit card, no checks, no cellphone, just all her belongings in the back of her truck and she used a paper map to get there. However, on her trip to Iowa, she knew that it was different. There are more things to consider than just herself.

Before she leaves she was talking to her friend Lindsey on the phone and they realized that she can make a detour on her trip. Rachel went to Missouri to meet Lindsey Bennett (Episode #10 and #34) and Gina Giro (Episode #53) on Thursday and then meet some other friends in Golden before she went back home on Friday.

While she was driving on the road she was listening to a book and it made her realize many things. Rachel explains how healing it was for her. She was able to release some of those emotions that she's been holding. Despite feeling nervous, she then realized why she needed to travel alone.

If this resonates with you, Rachel would love to hear your story.

    August 2021 Time Capsule - #136

    August 2021 Time Capsule - #136

I had this interesting feeling to record an episode that was like a time capsule, for the  August 30, 2022 version of me to look back on and enjoy. I invite you to do a similar thing to appreciate this current moment we are all in right now. The time will fly by either way.

Prompts I Gave For Myself to Answer

A time you were thankful for someones' goodness -

My roommate Hiram got me a free Pizza from Domino's and it was BBQ chicken with tomatoes and BBQ sauce as the sauce

    Something you enjoy doing -

I like juggling for a few minutes before work, and also shooting some hoops in the tiny court near my apartment.

A person you recently met that you are thankful for -

    Jason.

A recent memory that makes you smile -
Throwing frisbee with Tim in the park

    A book I am reading -
"QB My life Behind The Spiral" by Steve Young

    Something I am working on - m
    Myself.

Something I am looking forward to -
Being able to inspire more people as I have figured out a lot of things

A recent adventure I am glad I went on - I went to the Stukent boating trip even though I was feeling very low (didn’t mention it in the time capsule though lol)

    A recent journal entry -

    8/17/21

"God sees me. God loves me. Writing truly helps me so much. I am learning lots. Meet the Robinsons is an amazing movie! Keep moving forward

"A quote to live by" -

Do the thing you fear and the death of fear is certain - Mark Twain

    "Advice for my future self"

You have always been thoughtful for others. I would encourage you to use that energy to also help you be thoughtful for yourself.

    What I love about you

Dallin I love that you are willing to keep trying even when you make a mistake. You see that your gifts do have value and you try to share that with the world.

The hopes I have for you

I hope that you are spreading your wings as far as you possibly can, sticking together with the friends and family that have helped you get this far. Keep reaching out and building up those others whom you can call friend. Wherever you are make sure that you are making time for yourself and to build yourself up.

    In one year

I would like to have given at least one TEDx talk and have finished up at least two books to inspire the next generation. I would also like to have an email newsletter that I enjoy writing and has at least 500 subscribers.

3 Reasons to Start Writing Today! - #130

3 Reasons to Start Writing Today! - #130

Writing is something that we are all taught to do from a young age but we are not necessarily taught (at least not very thoroughly) the why and the usefulness of it. Growing up it was drilled into me that the only reasons to write were to inform, entertain, or persuade people.

In this episode, I dug into 3 other reasons to write: documenting your journey, providing clarity, and giving inspiration for tough times. Reflective and other writing has helped me immensely on my entrepreneurship journey so far, and I am sure it will help you too!

     Time Stamps:

    0:30 – Reason 1 - Documenting Your Journey

    1:52 – Reason 2 - Clarity

    3:15 – Reason 3 - Inspiration

    Note:

Last week I came down with a fever and my voice still hasn't recovered. That is why I am uploading this episode today and not a few weeks from now. I know I said that I would be uploading Part 2 of Building a Sell Yourself to Yourself Commercial today but with my voice froggy, I don't want to do that for another week or so. Thanks for understanding!

5 Super Powers You Can Develop Right Now! - #129

5 Super Powers You Can Develop Right Now! - #129

Growing up I struggled with feeling like I had any talents that could be used to benefit the world. Now I have learned that I have plenty to share and to give. I have also learned about some super powers that truly can change the world (even if they are not super strength, flying, etc.)

Today we dove into how we can develop super vision, copying yourself, x-ray vision, empathy, and power over fire. I really enjoyed making this episode! If you enjoyed it let me know and I will definitely make a Part 2!

    Clarifying Notes:

I recorded this like a few weeks ago (before the semester ended) but yeah.

I have had ramen since then but it was at my cousin’s house and it was the GOOD ramen and not the super, super cheap stuff.
