Dr. Mark Duggan and Dr. Andrew Johnston Discuss the Hidden Tax Bill Approaching for Businesses

Dr. Mark Duggan and Dr. Andrew Johnston Discuss the Hidden Tax Bill Approaching for Businesses

Dr. Mark Duggan is a Senior Fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research, focusing much of his research on the healthcare sector. And Dr. Andrew Johnston is an assistant professor of economics at University of California, Merced. Today, they will discuss the Op-Ed they recently co-authored in the Wall Street Journal on a big and hidden tax bill that could be coming for businesses at the worst possible time.

Earlier this year, COVID-19 crushed the US economy and caused our unemployment rate to spike from a sixty year low to the worst rate since the Great Depression. Unemployment Insurance – which was significantly expanded in the CARES Act – was a lifeline for millions of workers, but soon businesses could be hit with a big state tax increase to cover the cost. But as you just heard Doctors Duggan and Johnston explain, there are tax policy reforms states could and should embrace to prevent struggling businesses from getting a big tax hit just as they are trying to get back on their feet.

Episode 1: On the Road with Ady Barkan

For our very first episode, People's TV co-founders Nicholas Bruckman and Ryder Haske sit down to discuss our upcoming documentary about Ady Barkan, a 35-year-old activist who was diagnosed suddenly with ALS and given two to four years to live. He famously confronted Jeff Flake for his support of a tax bill that would cut healthcare support for him and millions of other Americans. They also discuss how brands and nonprofits can effectively tell stories for social change. This podcast was recorded in an RV as the production team traveled with Ady from California to Maine.

David Davenport: Previewing Trump’s First State of the Union Speech

David Davenport: Previewing Trump’s First State of the Union Speech

A president’s first state of the union message is an important occasion. But in our era of political theater, there is some danger that this year the sideshow will overshadow the main attraction.

Several democratic members of Congress say they will boycott the event.  One Congresswoman is encouraging females who do attend to dress in black.

Despite the political challenges, “it’s the economy, stupid.”  If Trump makes this primarily an economic address, he can succeed.  Think about it:  unemployment is down, jobs are up and the stock market is on fire. His big piece of legislation, the tax bill, is projected to lead to even more economic growth. The president has problems elsewhere, but so far so good on the economy and that should be his message.

The Constitution does not actually require this kind of televised state of the union address, though tradition does.  It’s always possible that a nontraditional president like Trump might surprise us and do something completely different.
