As epic as the stories are the story-tellers. Tom Dreesen’s mind-blowing C.V. traces his career path from shoe shine boy in Harvey, Illinois to sharing a jet and a stage with Frank Sinatra. Along the way he pioneered the first integrated comedy team, Tim and Tom with Tim Reid, graced the tonight show stage 60 times, frequently guested and guest hosted for and with David Letterman and toured with Smokey Robinson and Sammy Davis Jr.

Tom spent 15 years on the road with Sinatra, forming a friendship that informed and nourished both of them.

Tom offers insights into forging a career in comedy, he shares revelations about his Chicago childhood and Tom and Fritz swap Tonight show baptismal stories.

Larry Manetti tells us that he was discoverd in the Universal commissary and cast soon thereafter in Baa Baa Black Sheep thanks to the fervent support of Robert Conrad. Larry fills us in on his What’s Cooking With Larry Manetti pilot which featured the handsomest guest cast in cooking show history: Tom Selleck, Robert Wagner and Mike Connors! And Larry ’s lifelong friendship with Tom Selleck welcomes a new chapter this week as they star together in an upcoming episode of Blue Bloods.

Plus, Fritz and Weezy are recommending Any Given Tuesday by Lis Smith and The Pale Blue Eye novel by Louis Bayard which has become a Netflix film starring Christian Bale and Harry Melling.

Ep. 38: Tom Dreesen (Part II) - The Man Who Made Sinatra Laugh

Part II: Tori returns in delight with one of her favorite spirits, a true comedian's comedian and one of the world’s most groundbreaking, well-respected, and beloved entertainers. A true pioneer and legend in the entertainment industry with 52 years of comedy, relationships, stories, and wisdom to share. He has made over 500 national TV appearances as a stand-up comedian, including more than 60 appearances on The Tonight Show, and was a favorite guest of David Letterman. For fourteen years, he was the opening act for Frank Sinatra, and performed countless times with artists like Smokey Robinson, Liza Minnelli, Natalie Cole, and Sammy Davis, Jr. He is currently appearing to rave reviews around the country in his one-man show “An Evening Of Laughter and Memories of Sinatra.” In this spirited Part 2 conversation, they talk about the inner workings of show business, how to have balance in life, your ego vs spirit, what brings him pure joy, and so much more! Here's to the man who made Sinatra laugh, and Tori's beloved "Uncle Tom" ... Tom Dreesen.

“The day I met him, my life forever changed. The day he passed away, I knew my life would never be the same.” - Tom Dreesen (on his relationship with Frank Sinatra)

    Alley Cats Strike

    Alley Cats Strike

It's a cat eat cat world in the competitive world of Middle School (High School?) basketball...I mean bowling.  West Appleton has just won the face off against East Appleton tying up the years long bid competition for the mighty Apple. And now, the deciding contest must take place in a bowling alley. While watching this semi forgotten Disney Channel Original Movie, Adaeze and Taiwo find themselves faced with these nail biting questions:

    1. When did bowling fall out of favor with the general American public?
    2. Did this movie restore bowling's relevance in the zeitgeist?
    3. How little can you consider the feelings of your friends, while maintaining best friendship?
    4. What IS the Alley Cat Strike?

To all these questions, a simple answer must suffice..."Wouldn't you like to know"?

Tim Reid, from the Small Business Big Marketing Show, on helpful marketing.

Marketing is one of the greatest challenges facing small business owners.

In this episode Tim Reid, host of Australia's number one marketing podcast, Small Business Big Marketing https://smallbusinessbigmarketing.com/ talks about how to overcome the fear that many owners have about marketing.

    This fear is driven by 3 limiting beliefs;

    1. Marketing costs too much
    2. Marketing takes too long
    3. They themselves lack the knowledge

He explains how owners can overcome these 3 limiting beliefs and start achieving greater success.

Tim's methodology for taking advantage of opportunities and achieving marketing success is simple. He calls it 'Helpful Marketing'.

    Like never before all the tools exist to run low cost and effective marketing programs. So forget all the jargon you've ever heard. Implementing 'Helpful Marketing' involves;

    1. Listening to prospective clients and customers to hear (and understand) what problems they have and what questions they need answers to.
    2. Solving problems and answering questions for your clients and customers.
    3. Writing down the answers to common questions down in your marketing and  on your website in your FAQ section.
    4. Continuously and actively asking clients and customers about the problems and questions they have.

    Some other really helpful and practical tips Tim had to make your marketing successful;

    1. Adopt a helpful mindset.
    2. Review your brand and all the different marketing touchpoints for consistency.
    3. Understanding the difference between Push and Pull marketing.
    4. Allocating regular time.
    5. Learn to love it and treat it as a hobby.
    6. Don't persist with any marketing that isn't working.
    7. Social Media is only part of the marketing mix, it's not all your marketing.
    8. And if you only had 20 minutes a day for marketing Tim suggests you FOCUS ON WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH YOUR EXISTING AND PAST CLIENT BASE - there are always  latent opportunities in there!

Everyone remembers Daphne Maxwell Reid as an iconic TV mom of the 1990s, from her three seasons as Aunt Vivian on “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.” And Daphne couldn’t be more excited when the cast of “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” reunite 30 years later for an unscripted reunion special airing on HBO Max at Thanksgiving. She also stars in “The Business of Christmas,” which will air on Netflix on December 1.

335 - How To Encourage Customers To Buy More With Afterpay's Nick Molnar.

335 - How To Encourage Customers To Buy More With Afterpay's Nick Molnar.

Nick Molnar has figured out how to encourage customers to buy more. He is the founder of Afterpay, a simple payment system that lets customers buy what they want today (in fact, they can take it home immediately), then pay for it over 4 equal fortnightly installments. It’s also proving a great way for retailers to sell more. Here's how Afterpay works for merchants.

We cover plenty of ground in this chat including:

    • What Nick learnt working in his family's retail jewelry business
How to encourage customers to buy more
    • How the idea for Afterpay came about
    • How Afterpay enables retailers to increase sales
    • How Nick rallied his most loyal customers to do his marketing
    • Plus plenty more

Plus I launch a new segment called What Have You Got To Lose? in which I share one simple yet effective marketing idea that you can go and implement immediately. An idea that won't cost a fortune (if anything) to implement, and that might just generate you more awareness, more enquiry, and ultimately more sales.

    1. Be customer-centric. Never stop looking at your business through the eyes of your precious customers. Be a customer of your own business. Ask customers what they think. Hold focus groups. Do whatever it takes to make this a fundamental tenant of how you grow that beautiful business of yours.

    2. Get your customers to do your marketing. Nick’s social media push asking AfterPay customers to encourage their favourite retailers to get AfterPay is genius. What can you get your tribe to do?

    3. Know your numbers. This one scares a lot of business owners. But chunk it down. Start by identifying two or three metrics that you could track on a daily basis. It might be website traffic, phone enquires … maybe even sales! As you start to see trends, then put in place ideas to see if you can effect a positive change to these numbers.

334 - Gwyneth Paltrow thinks this little Aussie retailer is doing very big things

334 - Gwyneth Paltrow thinks this little Aussie retailer is doing very big things

I remember my days working for Australia’s biggest travel agent - I absolutely dreaded wearing their corporate uniform.

I felt like such a dag. Polyester shirt, navy slacks. In fact, I think the tie was even on a bit of elastic!

Where was today’s guest when I needed her?!

She runs a very disruptive uniform business - that even Hollywood star Gwyneth Paltrow loves!

Her name is Felicity Rogers and she started Cargo Crew. I met her a couple of months ago at the Telstra Business Awards where I was the emcee. In fact, the year before, Cargo Crew actually won the National Small Business Award!

So, what’s Cargo Crew. Well, as Felicity says “She’s building a brand that crews (that’s her funky word for workers) around the world love to wear”.  She goes on to say “Cargo Crew creates original, design led uniforms that enhance and compliment a business’ visual identity and brand language.”

Cargo Crew now exports to over 30 countries with 12,000 crews around the world wearing their uniforms. Their clients include Renault, Hoyts & Freedom Furniture, artisan coffee roasters Seven Seeds and even Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop skin care business.  Felicity shares:

    • The power of a good corporate uniform
    • Why your  business’s visual language is important
    • How she got a massive international contract by advertising in a little magazine
    • How Gwyneth Paltrow came to wearing a Cargo Crew apron
    • Plus we talk pricing, photography, retail vs online and plenty more

BTW, during the interview, Felicity forgot to tell us about another big win, which I’ll share with you after the interview.

Plus I have some feedback from a listener who’s been inspired to create a podcast herself. And we revisit a past episode in which Australia’s voice of online retail shares some gold.

Yep, another big epsidoe of your favourite Marketing podcast, so let's get stuck right in.

    1. Briefing. Become proficient in how you brief creative people. I think many small business owners undervalue creativity, as it’s often hard to measure its ROI. However, when you have a logo you love, or a corporate uniform that people constantly comment on, or a website that really pops, then you’ll understand the power of great design. If you want to understand the breifing process more, then join the Small Business Big Marketing Forum and I’d be happy to help you out.

    2. The Crew Review. I do love an old school marketing idea. And I particularly love the fact that Felicity had her team identify key industries and the key players within them, and mail them directly. This is a great job to outsource to a VA.

    3. Easy and simplicity. Everything about the Cargo Crew brand smells of ease and simplicity. Easy to buy products. A simple website to find your way around. An easy return policy. The key here is to remove as many blockages as you can to make it easy for people to buy from you.

333 - How to create an amazing business culture with Ant Morell from Bounce

333 - How to create an amazing business culture with Ant Morell from Bounce

Ant Morell knows how to create an amazing business culture. He is the founder of Bounce - an indoor trampolining playground for people of all ages, that’s experienced some extraordinary growth in its first four years; and a big reason for this is due to the amazing culture Ant and his team have created.

To fully understand how they’ve done this, you’ll need a basic understanding of a Melbourne-based charity called Reach; because that’s where I met Ant for the first time about 10 years ago. Reach had a huge impact on my life, and on Ant as he’s utilised a lot of what he learnt at Reach to build the Bounce brand philosophy.

So Reach is a wonderful NFP that’s focussed on helping young people at risk find their passion in life. It’s based on a concept called The Hero’s Journey which focusses on how we as humans will only find true happiness in life when we acknowledge just how good each of us are, and that we all have the right to put our best self forward in whatever we choose to do in life.

Imagine if you’d learnt that when you were at school?!

So … back to Bounce. Whilst Bounce in its physical form is simply a room full of trampolines, in it’s emotional form (it’s brand) Bounce is all about personal empowerment - both for its staff and customers. This will make more sense as we get into the interview. So pen and paper at the ready as Ant also covers:

    • How to build a meaningful business culture
    • Tips on how to attract and retain great staff
    • Ideas around creating unforgettable customer experiences

But that's not all. In this episode of your favourite marketing podcast:

    • I tackle a question from a listener who’s wanting to be a breath of fresh air in a stuffy old industry.
    • I have some feedback from a listener who runs a 3rd generation, 66 year old family business.
    • And we revisit an old episode in which Mia Freedman takes us inside the Mamamia empire.

Yep, another big episode, so let's get stuck, right in.

    1. I love The Love. This is what Bounce’s customer service ideology is called. Having a customer service ideology is impressive, giving it a brand name, I think, gives it even more meaning.

    2. Principles not scripts. I love the freedom Ant gives his people in order for them to offer great customer service. By not demanding that they rely on scripts, it empowers them to be themselves and still deliver a great result for the customer.

    3. Recruitment campaign. When going into a new country, they really do make some hoo-hah! From the initial media they generate, to the actual recruitment process which Ant refers to as a Casting Call, and then the 60-second Speed Date interviews.

332 - 19 year old high school dropout Chris Kelsey has a very refreshing take on how to grow a multi-million dollar business

High school dropout, Chris Kelsey, is 19 years old and started Appsitude, a San Francisco based app and web development company in December 2014 (when he was 17) that has made over $6 million in revenue so far this year.

Employing 60+ staff, he's also built many successful apps including Premium Wallpapers HD which received over 40 million downloads and did $8m revenue before it was sold in 2015.

331 - Spell & the Gypsy Collective's Lizzy Abegg on how she (and her sis) built a multi-million dollar Byron Bay fashion empire.

8 years ago, Lizzy Abegg had an epiphany that she needed to move to Byron Bay to help her little sister grow a struggling jewelry business. Well, that business is now called Spell & the Gypsy Collective ...  and it’s a multi-million dollar fashion empire.

“Spell and the what?!” I hear you say.

Spell & the Gypsy Collective is a Byron Bay fashion label with a cult-like following. The label began when Lizzy’s little sister Isabella (whose childhood nickname was Spell) started selling her handmade jewellery at Byron Bay's local markets. Before too long Lizzy had an epiphany that she needed to be in Byron Bay with her sister, so left her Bondi Beach home and career as a film editor to become Spell’s business partner.

From there the label has expanded into fashion, accessories and homewares … and they recently won the overall national Telstra Business Award (against some pretty bloody tough competition).

Spell is now consistently doing over a million dollars a month, has 660,000 Instagram followers, and a flagship store frequented by celebs from around the world.

It’s also a shining example of entrepreneurship and business passion in the notoriously tough and highly competitive fashion industry.

We cover a lot of ground in this chat … from the early days of Spell, to the importance of authenticity, to why we should avoid perfection, to some critical factors in ensuring your marketing actually delivers.

Plus I share some feedback from a listener who's taking action after tuning in to their favourite marketing podcast ;00, and I share three live events that you should consider attending (well, two actually, the first one is invite only and all invites are gone). That said, I'll be doing a n epsidoe from it with all the key learnings.

    1. Authenticity - I love Lizzy’s definition of this much over-used word - she simply describes it as ‘being yourself’ - if you want to learn more about ‘being yourself’ then check out the episode I did with Julie Cross (AKA Miss Sparkle) who goes deep into how to own your own space.

    2. Small Images - Lizzy’s rule of designing for the mobile screen first is critical if you want your marketing images to work - this applies to logos, taglines, photos, social media posts …. Everything!

    3. Perfection (or lack of it!) - I love the fact that the brand has multiple versions of its name (Spell and the Gypsy Collective, Spell, Spell Designs) - whilst not ideal, it hasn’t affected them growing a multi-million dollar empire. So, if you’re waiting for everything to be perfect before you make your next move then you may be waiting a long time! Instead, take a leaf out of Lizzy’s approach!

330 - How to create profitable business partnerships with Quentin Nolan of Liquid Snow Tours

This episode is a masterclass in how to create profitable business partnerships.

Quentin Nolan from Liquid Snow Tours, owns an Aussie-owned ski tour operation that can book you a skiing holiday in Japan, Canada, NZ and South America. Nothing special about that; but what is special is the fact that (at the age of 31) Quentin has built an $8 million dollar business, has profitable business partnerships with Australia's two biggest airlines and owns 6 hotels in Japanese ski resorts.

Listen in as Quentin shares some absolute gold with us including:

      • How he launched the business when he was 21
      • The key to developing solid, long-standing partnerships
      • How and why he's now buying hotels
      • Insights in to how he's effectively using social media as a #1 marketing tool
      • Plus so much more

Plus I share Part 4 of a 4-part series in which I share some highly clickable email subject lines that will get more of your emails open, more often. You'll find Part 1 (the first 5 email subject lines) in this episode of your favourite marketing podcast, and here's Part 2 and Part 3.

     MY TOP 3 ATTENTION GRABBERS

    1. Partnerships take time. Find the right ones, and the right person inside them, then be patient and put in the ground work.

    2. Be upfront with people like Quentin was in those first couple of years when he was taking ski tours to Japan, having not been there himself. If your passion and excitement shines through, then I think we can be a very forgiving.

    3. Own other parts of the value chain - buying hotels probs wasn’t on Quentin’s to-do list until he realised how much money he was giving across to his hotel partners.

329 - A brave sea change that lead to growing a dream business, with Pauy Medeiros of The Source Bulk Foods

329 - A brave sea change that lead to growing a dream business, with Pauy Medeiros of The Source Bulk Foods

Paul Medeiros (and his wife) made a brave sea change by leaving corporate and buying the Mullumbimby Fruit Shop.

Then, when Woolworth’s decided to come to town, he could have panicked and accepted the fact that Australia’s biggest supermarket chain would kill off his business.

Instead, he rolled the dice, and more than doubled their retail footprint.

He’s now the founder of one of Australia's hottest up and coming franchises - The Source Bulk Foods.

This is a story of courage, determination and being true to one’s values.

Paul Medeiros is a cubicle escapee who left a high-paying / high-pressure executive position in a large publicly listed company to start a better life up near beautiful Byron Bay

Paul is also the founder, owner and head Franchisor of The Source Bulk Foods business - an amazing new retail concept that’s taken the franchise world by storm.

Basically, it’s a good old-fashioned grocery shopping done in a modern way. The shops look and feel very rustic and organic - lots of exposed brick and wood, and they sell ~ 400 bulk whole foods like nuts, seeds, grains, herbs, spices, cleaning and personal care products etc. You can buy as little or as much as you like. The big point-of-difference is its waste-free shopping. Customers BYO their own bottles, containers and bags to refill, as The Source is plastic bag free experience.

Paul shares some absolute gold with us:

      • His escape from the cubicle
      • How he spent 3-years deciding on his next move
      • How he took on one of the biggest supermarket chains … and won!
      • His clever approach to LAM … and so much more

MY TOP 3 MARKETING ATTENTION GRABBERS

    1. Courage - Paul has made some bold moves along the way including leaving a high-paying corporate position > Selling blinds on commission to fund his next move > Buying a fruit shop in a small country town of 3,000 people > Taking on Woolworths > Opening up his second shop in Sydney at an exorbitant rent > Now running a 32 store franchise.

    2. Social Influencers - Ask people who love what you do and what your business stands for, and see how they can help spread the word. Whilst this happens organically (the Black Milk interview is an example of this), you can also overtly encourage it.

    3. Local Area Marketing - I loved how Paul slowly but surely (and quite strategically) integrated himself and his business into the Mullumbimby community.  What are you doing to genuinely embed yourself into your community?

328 - How to create a business that doesn't depend on you with Joyce Ong of the Young Musicians Academy

Today’s guest did the interview in her pyjamas. Why?

    Because she can!

She’s a true entrepreneur, starting a business to help put herself through university, only to then systemise it so that today it runs for the most part … without her.

And who doesn’t want a bit of that?!

Joyce Ong (PJs and all!) is the founder of the Young Musicians Academy - shares her secret sauce on how she’s created a business employing 35 music teachers - that paid her way through uni, and then some!

In a recent email to me from long time listener Russ Porteous he said:

“I met Joyce at the July Business Blueprint Conference, and she was one of the highlights of the 4-days. Joyce is a true entrepreneur, starting a business to help put herself through university, only to systemise the business so that today it runs for the most part without her ... I don't know Joyce's full story, but I think given her personality it’s one we’d all love to hear.  By systemising her business, Joyce has been able to remove herself from her business and follow other passions.”

    So, listen in and discover:

    1. How to hire people smarter than you without relying on the resume
    2. Joyce's 3 D process to creating systems
    3. Her global outsourcing strategy
    4. How she’s created a high converting website with a simple, strategic offer
    5. And how letterbox drops, school newsletters & JVs have worked to grow her business

Plus I share Part 2 of a 4- part series in which I share some highly clickable email subject lines that will get more of your emails open, more often. You'll find Part 1 (the first 5 email subject lines) in last week's episode of your favourite marketing podcast ;0).

327 - How To Make a Viral Video with David Christison Who's Made 8 Hugley Successful Ones

327 - How To Make a Viral Video with David Christison Who's Made 8 Hugley Successful Ones

Ever wondered how to make a viral video? Then listen up.

David Christison is the founder of The Woolshed - a video production company based in Melbourne that’s done something quite genius (I think) for the art of viral videos, and the marketing of his own business.

Over the past two years the Woolshed has produced 8 unique viral videos. Videos that many of you would have seen, and gone OMG! … then gone and shared it with your mates.

But the amazing thing is, all 8 of the videos are fully manufactured. They’re fakes!

This is an absolute masterclass on how to make a viral video.

You’ll find all eight viral videos over at at this blog post, but some of the major ones include the guy who fights off a Great White Shark in Sydney harbour (this one sucked me in!); the crazy guy who runs into an outback tornado to take a selfie; and the snowboarding girl being chased by a bear!

As David says in his press release, “We set out to better understand exactly how to create short-form, highly shareable and snackable’ content, that is capable of reaching worldwide mass audiences, without the luxury of pricey media buys, ad campaigns, publicity strategies or distribution deals.”

And, without any paid media, promotion or publicity here’s what the 8 viral videos have achieved:

    • 164 years of YouTube watch time
    • 205 million online views
    • 500,000+ comments
    • Plus worldwide news coverage on all the big outlets

Add to this the fact that this brilliant experiment single-handedly launched David’s business, to the point now where they are working for big names clients from around the world.

I love this story. Listen in and you’ll discover what works, what doesn’t, and what are the absolute ‘must haves’ for any viral marketing campaign.

PLUS, I share part 1 of a 4-part series in which I share 5 email subject lines that are highly clickable.

I’m also excited to announce The Growth Hack Accelerator, a live event I’m speaking at in September. Joined by two other speakers in Outsourcing expert David Warne, and Systems specialist David Guest, Growth Hack Accelerator is a ridiculously practical 3-hour breakfast session in which you’ll discover …

    • How to create a marketing system that will position you as a thought leader
    • How to radically reduce your businesses greatest expense
    • How to remove yourself from the business for maximum growth ( a theme that’s common to many recent episodes)

Yep, another big episode of your favourite marketing podcast.

So, let's get stuck, right in.

326 - How to make more money by working less in your business with Posture Podiatry's Daniel Gibbs

326 - How to make more money by working less in your business with Posture Podiatry's Daniel Gibbs

Today's guest very kindly cancelled a game of golf (on a Tuesday morning!) in order to do this interview, so the epsidoe title of how to make more money by working less in your business is more than apt!

I met Daniel Gibbs of Posture Podiatry at an event recently, when he came up and told me how much he loved my show, and began to explain how he’d implemented a few of the ideas he’d heard over the years. I was impressed ... I do love a good action-taker.

He particularly liked the episode I did with Dentist Padi Lund who, on the verge of suicide, made some fundamental changes to his business life, and lived to tell the story.

Now, whilst Daniel’s predicament was never that dier, he did find himself at one point being booked out 3-months in advance, seeing patients at midnight, feeling completely exhausted trying to both work on and in his business, whilst at the same time wanting to be there for his heavily pregnant wife.

So, like any motivated business owner, he made some fundamental changes to the way he did business. This really is inspiring stuff. Listen in and you’ll discover:

    • How to work less in your business
    • How to implement an unforgettable customer experience
    • The importance of systems … and post-it notes!
    • How critical that first 20 seconds with a customer is
    • How the quality of the herbal tea that you serve is in direct relationship to the quality of your service
    • Why you need a Wall of WOW!
    • And so much more

After working under another Podiatrist for a number of years, Daniel opened his own clinic at the age of 29, and from day one made a decision that it was going to be the best in class.

In today's episode, I also help a Horse & Donkey charity called Hope Pastures who has zero marketing budget but needs to feed their precious animals over the cold Winter month, with an idea that could help them raise plenty! It based on this fantastic crowd funding campaign:

Yep, another big episode of your favourite marketing podcast. So, let's get stuck, right in.

MY TOP 3 MARKETING ATTENTION GRABBERS

    1. Do everything in your power to stop the business being reliant on you. I have an episode coming up with another business owner who explains exactly how she’s done this … in fact she shares a beautifully elegant three step process.

    2. What’s your herbal tea? And I don’t mean what flavour do you like! I mean what can you offer your customers that’s simple, yet makes them go wow? The guy who services my car always gives it a wash. My local coffee shop gives you a little Macaroon with your coffee. So, what’s your herbal tea?

    3. Ask your clients … “What advice have you got for other clients of your business?” Their answers could form the basis of your on Wall of Wow, or you could sprinkle them throughout your website or include them on your quotes … like little testimonials.

325 - Willie Smith's ... A Boutique Cider Brand Punching Way Above Its Marketing Weight

Sam Reid is the co-founder of cider brand Willie Smiths.

I meet Sam at the recent Telstra Business Awards in Tasmania. Now, one of my jobs as the emcee was to announce the finalists for each category and read out a short bio about their business.

Each business always got a round of applause … although some got a bigger applause than others. Willie Smith’s Cider got the biggest by far …. Quite heartfelt, it was!

So, in kicked my marketing brain.

What are they doing that other businesses aren’t?

    What makes them so special?

Basically … Why all the love?!

At the end of the night I suggested he come on the show and reveal his secret sauce.

“Hell yeah!” was his measured response.

So, here’s Sam Reid, co-founder of Willie Smith’s Cider.

Also in this episode of your favourite marketing podcast, I share my top 10 ice-breaker questions that I use during pre-interview chats, and in general when meeting people for the first time. They get past the surface and fast-track getting to know someone at a much deeper level. And I even give you my answers to each of the questions. Yep … it gets personal!

MY TOP 3 MARKETING ATTENTION GRABBERS

    1. Sam’s tip on how to attract and retain great staff - Let people add themselves and their personality to your culture. Have them solves problems in their own way, in their own style. It’s incredibly empowering for them. The bottomline - stop trying to micro manage everyone.

    2. Free yourself up so you can create new things - I love Sam’s passion for creativity and innovation. The Festival wouldn’t have happened if he hadn’t created space between the day-to-day running of the business, and time to think. Who’s guilty of not doing this? I am. But when I do find time to sit and think; or walk and think; it’s bloody beautiful. So … here’s a couple of ways to create that time - 1. Be less controlling, and trust that your staff will solve problems in their own way; 2. Offshore process-driven tasks - Identify all those tasks that are taking up your precious time and money, and send them to places like The Philippines. We’ve covered this at length in past episodes - but if you want to cut to the chase, check out Cornerstone Business Solutions - an off-shoring business that I have an interest in, I believe in it so much.

    3. “We’re all about being memorable” - Are you? If not, why not? I’m guessing as a listener of this show you are constantly looking for ways to stay on your customers’ shopping list. Whether it be through offering an amazing customer experience (like past guest Joshua Nichols of Platinum Electrics); or breaking Guinness World Records like past guest Arthur Greeno of Chick Filay; or creating amazing stories that emotionally engage your customers like Dave Munson does of Saddleback Leather. There’s no shortage of ways to do it, so just choose one and get on with it!

323 - How To Disrupt Any Industry with Dominic Holland from Tow.com.au

323 - How To Disrupt Any Industry with Dominic Holland from Tow.com.au

Every industry is ripe for disruption. That’s the view of today’s guest, 29 year-old Dominic Holland of tow.com.au. Launched just two years ago, tow.com.au has completely disrupted the long-established and tightly held towing industry. The business did 7-figure revenues in year one and grew in year two by 350%. Listen in as Dom explains how to disrupt any industry.

[Tweet "This business did 7-figure revenues in year one. And grew by 350% in year two! Here’s how."]

[Tweet "'We’ve found something that clients are demanding and begging us for.' @dommholland"]

The amazing thing is, software engineer Dom, knew nothing about towing. What he did understand was that technology is shaking the foundations of every industry. That every industry has massive potential, and it’s just about working up the right model that delivers customers what they want, and makes it incredibly easy for them to use you.

[Tweet "'Everyone coming to your site looks for the same thing – give it to them immediately'@dommholland"]

Dom himself was last year awarded Queensland’s Young Entrepreneur of the year, and recently won the New Business Category at the 2016 Telstra Business Awards.

I gotta tell ya, this chat is dripping with marketing gold, as Dom explains:

    1. How and why to disrupt your industry
    2. A pro-tip for ensuring your website converts visitors to buyers
    3. A simple hack to automating those annoying tasks in your business
    4. Why Google Adwords is better than trying to rank organically
    5. And so much more…. Seriously, hit pause and grab your journal.

You know, there was so many learnings in this interview that I’ve captured them all in this blog post How a very disruptive business did 7-figure revenues in year one – with Dominic Holland of Tow.com.au.

Plus I share a voicemail I received from a listener and very motivated business owner who read The Boomerang Effect recently, and has seen some outstanding results in his business.

Enjoy this one … and remember, there’s magic in taking action.

MY TOP 3 MARKETING ATTENTION GRABBERS FROM THIS EPISODE

    1. Don't think disrupting your industry is only for the big players - the Ubers and Virgins and Tesla's of the world. Look for ways to disrupt your own industry. As Dom said "Every industry has massive potential for disruption. It's just about finding the best model for delivering the best customer experience."

    2. "All your website visitors are looking for the same thing. Give it to them immediately." So get crystal clear on what that thing is for your business, and make sure your website delivers on it upfront. And if you need help, contact WebCentral.

    3. Embrace change. The marketing world has changed so much in the past month, the past 6-months and certainly the past twelve months. And the changes we're seeing are playing right in to the hands of you and I ... small business owners with modest marketing budgets. So embrace this change, instead of letting it freak you out.

    • Some serious business courage

PLUS I head back to last week's interview with Orange Sky Laundry and my night out onsite with them. I capture a bit of a chat I had with Matt, one of Orange Sky's brilliant volunteers and Herb one of Orange Sky's homeless friends.

Herb is one seriously beautiful human being. The first thing he did was give me two tickets to the footy as he had 4 bags with all his possessions in them that he wouldn't be allowed to bring into the ground. Here are 4 powerful lessons Herb taught me during our chat:

    1. There’s always someone worse off than you.
    2. Be grateful for what you have.
    3. And you don’t need much to be happy.

Plenty of marketing gold in today's episode. Enjoy!

MY TOP 3 MARKETING ATTENTION GRABBERS FROM THIS EPISODE

    1. Acknowledge that discounting really is a race to the bottom. In particular, avoid discounting with new clients - this sets a precedent that will be hard to break. Instead, work hard at ensuring they see massive value in you and what you offer. I talk about this extensively in The Boomerang Effect.

    2. Actively look for a problem and fix it. This idea is so beautifully counter-intuitive, but it works. Look at this idea as if you were a customer. How cool would it be for a business you’re dealing with to bring a problem to your attention, and then tell you it’s been fixed. Such a great way to build trust.

    3. I found Tas’s tough decisions inspiring:
He refuses to discount, when a simple 10% off could secure the job.
He chose to stop painting (something he was very good at), and focus on the high-value activities like quoting, which quadrupled his business.
He sacked clients that made him and his staff miserable; and identified 4 types of clients he did want to work with. Go back to episode 183 with Dentist Paddy Lund who also did this with great success. He is gutsy enough to ask (and answer) the question “Where are we really at?”

320 - Orange Sky Laundry - A simple idea that's making the world a better place.

320 - Orange Sky Laundry - A simple idea that's making the world a better place.

Every now and then I do an interview which not only changes the way I look at business, but changes the way I view things … A bit woo woo I know, but get ready for a thoroughly inspiring interview with the founders of the social movement Orange Sky Laundry, who have become our 2016 Young Australians of the year, no less. One day they had a crazy idea to throw a washing machine and a dryer in the back of a van and go and help out the homeless by doing their washing. Orange Sky Laundry was born.

Not only did they not realise that this crazy idea was a world first but it was what happened between hitting the go button on the washing machine and the load being finished and dried is what makes the real difference … conversations. I spent a night out on the road with Orange Sky Laundry and I had some really powerful conversations which I will bring to you in the coming weeks.

    Here’s Orange Sky’s Why...

Now I am seriously motivated to help these guys and you can help too. Here are 3 ways:

    1. You can volunteer
    2. You can donate (as little as $6)
    3. You can introduce them to someone you know, someone who can do the above 2 things or (and maybe even better) you can introduce them to a HUGE sponsor.

I really loved bringing this episode to you and I hope you get as much out of it as I have.

MY TOP 3 MARKETING ATTENTION GRABBERS FROM THIS EPISODE

    1. Know your Key Messages. Go back and have a listen (in particular to Nic) who is pro at reeling off the key messages he wants to get across about Orange Sky.

An example is when I ask him “why does Orange Sky exist?” he replies - 1. Restore respect. 2. Improve health standards. 3. Reduce the strain on resources. And I’ve noticed he responds with exactly the same answer in every interview he does.

So I encourage you to have 3-5 key messages that you share whenever you get the chance.
    2. Have a name for your customers. Orange Sky call them their Homeless Friends. I call you my Motivated Business Owners. Doing so brings emotion and connection to your marketing.
    3. Orange Sky needs our support. As I mentioned earlier, I helped out at an Orange Sky Laundry the night after this interview.
I got to meet some homeless friends and had some beautiful conversations.  I’ll share my experience in an upcoming episode. Now I’m more determined than ever to help Orange Sky grow and I hope you are too. How?
      1. Volunteer (Button on OrangeSkyLaundry.com.au)
      2. Donate to Orange Sky Laundry
      3. Introduce them to someone you know who can help

317 - Should You Sell Your Business and Follow Your Passion?

317 - Should You Sell Your Business and Follow Your Passion?

Have you ever thought to yourself… Should I sell my business, pack everything up and just hit the road? Well I have found a guy that has done just that and is literally living the dream. He and his wife owned and ran a printing business for 12 years. They were in the daily grind, employing staff, constantly keeping the wheels turning to pay the bills. Then one day they decided to pack up, sell up and go on a 16 month road trip around this beautiful country with their two young children and you wouldn’t believe it… This trip spawned a whole new business.

In this fireside chat we cover:

    • The motivation behind creating the documentary 'The Big Lap"
    • How to create content even when you have no experience
    • Content marketing on steroids
    • How to use Facebook advertising to drive traffic to your website then sales
    • Re-marketing on facebook
    • Building a community

I also cover a marketing question from ME. I've been bugged by a particular SEO question for months. When you create a piece of content for your website you should write around a specific keyword or key phrase. As you know I cover a wide range of small business marketing topics on each and every episode so I'm often stumped as to what should be the 'focus keyword'. So I turned to SEO expert and past guest of the show Rand Fishkin from Moz.

    *GEEK ALERT*

    Here's Rand's response:

There's not much metadata required these days. The page title, meta description, and any schema markup (https://moz.com/learn/seo/schema-structured-data) that applies, and that's pretty much it. If you're looking for more on how on-page SEO works these days, check out https://moz.com/blog/on-page-seo-8-principles-whiteboard-friday

If your challenge is more choosing what to make the focus keywords, my advice would be to think about the problem the podcast/shownotes solve for people, and what folks might search for that would result in them being extremely happy to find that particular show. A tool like Keyword Explorer (from Moz) or Ubersuggest (which is free) might help, too.

Geek is Chic! If this makes no sense to you feel free to send this to your web developer to help you out.

MY TOP 3 MARKETING ATTENTION GRABBERS FROM THIS EPISODE

    1. Have the confidence to front some videos or audios for your business - Steve and his family fronted 200 hours of footage without any media training. I started this show without any interviewing experience. I talk about this in my book, plus there’s a chapter on video content ideas.
    2. Use original content as a way to get people inside your business (in Steve's case, his website). Focus on creating insanely helpful content and the clicks (and sales) will follow.
    3. Promote that content on Facebook - whether it be a boosted post or Facebook ads. This can be more effective than going for the direct sale.
