    Keep Calm and Carry On
This episode features storytellers sharing their experiences of overcoming challenges while thriving with disabilities. Cindy Massey, a photographer and artist, tells her story titled "Finding Family." She recounts her journey to Africa, facing various unexpected hurdles during a safari. Despite the obstacles, she finds strength through the support of fellow alcoholics in Africa, emphasizing the importance of resilience and overcoming challenges. In part two, Kamand Alaghehband, a Special Olympics athlete with Autism, shares her story of perseverance after a morning crisis before a track competition thanks to the support of her teammates, highlighting determination and teamwork. The episode explores the power of resilience, adaptability, and finding strength within a community.

Guest: Cynthia (Cindy) Massey is a photographer and artist. For more than 10 years, she built a successful career in weddings, sports, and animal photography. In 1992, her life changed forever, when she was in a near-fatal automobile accident that left her with a traumatic brain injury. The experience was a wake-up call and the road to recovery meant re-learning simple tasks like walking, talking, eating, reading, and even photography. It gave her the chance to take a long, hard look at who she was, and it led to a new direction in the way she approaches life. She believes she has been given a second chance to begin a new life with a greater appreciation of the beauty of our earth and its creatures. John’s program was developed at the request of the Marine Corps in 2007 to improve focus, situational awareness, and faster and better decision making under stress. The goal was  to improve Warfighting and reduce casualties, but we found it was also a significant accelerator of recovery from PTS and  TBI. It spread to Snipers, pilots, Navy SEALs, and EOD, as well as Wounded Warrior units.

I really enjoyed my chat with John. You can tell that he genuinely cares about helping others. The exercises that he provided to me were not complicated or hard. It reminded me of swimming. Go with me for a second…. When I think about swimming I would think about the days when I was on the swim team when I was a kid. I just assume when I jump in a pool I am going to frolic through that water like a fish. I do not anymore. It’s more of a fight to not drown. It’s because I might have swam 10 times in the last 20 years. When John gave me a sheet of paper and told me to read it aloud left to right, it was going to be as easy as it sounded. I was so fascinated by how sleepy and sluggish my mind felt. When we added fruits to colors and tapping….my mind was blown by how quickly my mind caught up to the complexity of the tasks being asked. It really was a cool experience and also showed me I need to do more to challenge my mind. I hope you all find this as interesting as I did.

Ever since my accident, and into recovery, I learned that I needed to prioritize my mental health. And my goal for this podcast is to help you do so, too!

For the seventh episode of Season 1, Vincent A. Lanci brings on Jon Infeld.

Jon has always been a health conscious athlete growing up in New Jersey. He traveled down to University of Tampa to study Public Health and Wellness. Unfortunately, one evening he became unconscious and spent 30 days in the hospital, suffering from a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). We unfortunately both spent time in at TGH, or Tampa General Hospital.

This experience has led him back to making a difference full-time; as he is now a teacher who has helped aid in the creation of a mental health program in his school. He is also a dedicated role model, family man, coach, and friend. This is not an episode you want to miss as it relates to students, professionals, and parents, as his mom and dad were right by his side in recovery. I am proud to witness how far he's come and can't wait to share his story of persevering with you all!

Cutting-edge research into traumatic brain injury (TBI) and domestic partner violence with Dr. Paul van Donkelaar

Cutting-edge research into traumatic brain injury (TBI) and domestic partner violence with Dr. Paul van Donkelaar

Dr. Paul van Donkelaar has partnered up with his spouse Karen Mason of the Kelowna Women's Shelter to initiate groundbreaking studies into the connections between domestic partner violence and traumatic brain injury (TBI). The research taking place in his UBC Okanagan lab focuses on gaining a better understanding of traumatic brain injury (TBI) due to sports concussion or intimate partner violence. They measure cerebrovascular, neurocognitive, sensorimotor, and blood biomarker variables using a suite of state-of-the-art equipment. For research on intimate partner violence, they are using an integrated knowledge translation approach with the goal of co-designing and creating TBI-informed tools and resources for front line staff working at community organizations supporting survivors. There is a link to an excellent TedX Kelowna talk below in the show notes.
