Running in the Rain: What to Think About When You Think About Quitting

Running in the Rain: What to Think About When You Think About Quitting

How do we convince ourselves to do something we’d rather not?

It’s cold and raining outside, but I’m supposed to go for a training run today.  I really don’t want to.  To get myself out the door, here are the kinds of things that go through my head, and ways we can all think about approaching any difficult task that we’d really rather not do.

    Notes and Resources:

“Our will is a kind of muscle, and it’s times like these when we can either train it to grow stronger, or allow it to atrophy.”  - Ken Downer

When it comes to willpower, winning today’s battle will make it easier to win the one tomorrow.”  - Ken Downer

There is no such thing as bad weather, only poor clothing choices.”  - Outdoorsman’s adage

The first step to growth is accepting discomfort.”  - Ken Downer

The impediment to action advances action.  What stands in the way becomes the way.”  - Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

811 - Part 2: Doomer Optimisim with Tucker Max

Part 2 of Tucker Max's Doomer Optimism

If you missed Part 1, make sure you go back and check it out!

In this episode, I was joined by Tucker Max, an American author, and public speaker, to talk continuing talking about his article, Doomer Optimism.

We talked about empire, and if America is one, and what does the future hold for America. Will it be for the best or for the worst?

Tucker also explained to me the power of community, and what does community means to him, also the town that he's building!

We also talked about if people are starting to wake up that they don't get stuck at what they're doing, but they get to choose to do what they wanted to do and they don't have to be in 9 - 5 jobs anymore.

And finally, Tucker also talked about what skill does he thinks would benefit the most in the future!

Again, if you missed Part 1 of Tucker's Doomer Optimism, make sure you check out Episode 811

50 - Peloton Recall, Nerf the World

Stothton discusses the recent Peloton treadmill recall with Tim Watson. Don't worry, we actually discuss the recall this time. Truly defective products are one thing, but at a certain point people need to take responsibility for their own lives and their own mistakes. Also, clearly Peloton treadmills were designed this way, because they are meant to be used as disciplinary tools when your children get out of line. It's a feature folks.

Running After Hip Replacement Surgery a 140 lbs weight-loss journey with Samuel Pappas

Running After Hip Replacement Surgery a 140 lbs weight-loss journey with Samuel Pappas

I’m so excited to introduce you all to Samuel Pappas - a member of our very own RaceMob community.  A few weeks ago I asked our community “what are you struggling with?” and Sam replied - balancing my newly found love for running with not aggravating my double hip replacement surgeries.

Through our email exchange - it was clear that Samuel was an absolute inspiration - so we quickly jumped online to chat.

You’re going to love this story about a retired air force veteran, who was living a sedentary lifestyle and had reached 260 lbs on his 5’5” frame.  After his second hip replacement surgery - Samuel decided to make a change - and it started out small by normal human standards.  But bear in mind - when Samuel started by walking on a treadmill, he had to use his arms to support him.

Fast forward to years - and Samuel says that walking and eventually running has given him his mobility back.  Now 140 lbs and able to run 10 miles in the Florida heat - people might mistake him for a different person altogether.  We hope that you enjoy our conversation with Samuel Pappas!

    Is your Industry eating itself?

    Is your Industry eating itself?
As someone committed to your career and your industry, you should worry if your company doesn’t look like it’s trying to bite its own tail, with investments into technology and taking business risks. If your company is not investing in eating itself fast enough, you can be sure that a tech or hyphen-tech company will have your company as a snack. Your company is not a safe haven. It will either eat itself, or be eaten by technology. Because the technology treadmill runs very fast, the new jobs are not safe from obsolescence. So as an individual with a few decades of work left inside you, you have to learn to eat and reinvent yourself perpetually, like the ouroboros. In this fascinating talk, our frequent guest, Gaurav Rastogi, tells us why the ancient image of a snake biting its own tail will be the defining portrayal of careers in the decade to come.

First Cup of Coffee - April 5, 2019

I'm discombobulated today because my under-desk treadmill is being - and making ominous noises - so I'm talking about how my walking desk is integral to writing for me. Also about how ritual and habits affect building a sustainable writing flow, but that ultimately the writing comes from us, not the ritual. First cat-wrangling episode of the season, too!
