Twins After IVF | UK Twin Mom Melanie Bidwell

Nat chats with Melanie Bidwell, mom to 3-year-old boys who she conceived through IVF (in vitro fertilization). Melanie and Nat both share their experiences of managing the emotions of a twin pregnancy and raising infant twins after IVF.

Melanie Bidwell is a UK mum of 3 1/2-year-old twin boys. After many years they were the positive result after four rounds of IVF and although still shocked it was twins, it was a welcome miracle. After having the boys she went back to work part-time and also decided to set up a business called Just4twins. There didn't seem to be many UK-based websites for twin parents so she took the leap and set one up. And during Covid with another fellow twin mum, Melanie set up a twin support group called Multipals. Having twins has changed her life for the better and brought so much happiness to her and her husband.

My Son Has IPEX Syndrome and Needs a Lifesaving Transplant | Twin Mom Allison Creech

Nat chats with Allison Creech, mom of twin boys plus an older singleton boy, who is dealing with her son Micah's terminal diagnosis of IPEX Syndrome which will require a bone marrow transplant. Allison shares her feelings around this diagnosis, how she is managing her three boys, and how her faith is helping to get her through this time.

IPEX is a genetic disease of immune dysregulation in which patients can present early in life with diarrhea, diabetes, and eczema. It is extremely rare, affecting 1 in every 1.6 million people. Patients with IPEX have abnormalities in the FOXP3 gene, which controls the production of regulatory T cells, a type of immune cell. Without a normal FOXP3 gene, other immune cells attack the body’s healthy tissues.

You can follow Micah's story here on Facebook.

Emily's Top 3 Tips for Raising Twins

    1) No matter what feels intense and insurmountable at this moment, you will figure it out!!! I remember sobbing on the sidewalk with two screaming babies on my chest because I couldn't figure out how to close my stroller (a UPS man eventually carried my stroller in for me) and then, a few months later, I could get the stroller and babies out no problem! I like thinking back on that moment and reminding myself that everything in twin parenting is like that -- I'll eventually figure it out.

    2) I tell myself that my twins are learning to be more patient and gracious little people by constantly having to wait their turn! I hate the feeling of being divided as a mother, but I'm hopeful that they are learning useful life skills very, very early.

    3) It's super helpful to have one child with an "L" name, because forevermore Lily's items will always be stored on the LEFT. The same would be true for an R name. Or even better, choose two names that start with L and R. I didn't think of that until it was too late :)

Alex's Top 3 Tips for Parents of Twins

    1. Try your absolute best to get your twins on the same schedule early on…for your own sanity! Thankfully by the time our twins arrived, we had gone through infant schedules with our first two children. We knew roughly what we wanted and what we didn’t from the get-go, so if you’re not in this position, it may take a little trial and error, but it is SO worth it. If you can feed your twins at the same time, change them, play with them, bathe them and bed them both at roughly the same time, you may actually get some time for yourself, or at least time to reset and recharge for it all to start over again! Babies love routine and you will love it too.

    2. Use some forethought and plan ahead. Whether you’re staying home or being brave and going on an outing with your twins, it’s extremely helpful to think ahead and plan for what your babies will want. When my twins were sleeping, I would be washing dishes, meal-prepping, doing laundry, and making bottles. If I wanted to go out, I packed the car with the stroller, a carrier, several diapers and changes of clothes, burp cloths, on-the-go snacks, and toys before I had to do it all with babies in my arms! Planning ahead is essential to keeping the chaos at bay.

    3. Take Elsa’s lead and “Let it Go!” After all is said and done, you simply can’t control it all. Take time to acknowledge and appreciate all that you have done to prepare for battle, and when things don’t go according to plan, let it ride. Everything will be okay! We all experience messy, hard times, but what is important is how we react to them, which directly impacts how we feel. Take a deep breath when something goes awry, know that it will pass, and just let it go.

Two Bulls in a China Shop: Twins with Sensory Processing Disorder | Twin Mom Amanda Holman

Nat chats with Amanda Holman, mom to 4-year-old boys plus a 6-year-old singleton boy, about her twins' sensory processing disorder. Sensory processing disorder (SPD) is a condition that affects how your brain processes sensory information, including things you see, hear, smell, taste, or touch. SPD can affect all of your senses, or just one. SPD usually means you're overly sensitive to stimuli that other people are not. Amanda shares what she did to get her sons the help they needed through early intervention.

Today's episode is sponsored by Boiron SleepCalm Kids. Learn more at BoironUSA.com.

Amanda Holman is a mom to three boys, Bryson (6), Kason (4), and Parker (4). She and her husband, Jeremy, have been married for 13 years. Amanda is the Director of College, Career, and Military Readiness for a school district in San Antonio, Texas. She spent 10 years teaching high school before moving to her current role. Amanda holds a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Agricultural Education from Tarleton State University and a Doctoral Degree in Educational Leadership from Texas A&M University - Kingsville. Although her professional life revolves around students, education, and developing leaders, she claims that it, in no way, prepared her for twin parenting. In her limited amount of spare time, Amanda enjoys watching Bryson play baseball, chasing her boys around their home, and spending time camping in their RV. Connect with Amanda on Facebook here.

Amanda's 3 Pieces of Advice for Twin Parents

    1) Don't ever, for one minute, worry about what other people think about your parenting. Especially if they don't have twins. You are killing it!

    2) Live in the moment. They are only this little today. So let the house be messy and the laundry pile up while you play.

    3) Pick your battles, especially with twins! Sometimes the 5 minutes of quiet and coffee is worth the 30 minutes to clean them up after playing in the mud!

Kenny's 3 Pieces of Advice for Twin Parents

    1. Folks will offer up a ton of advice, but learn to trust your own instincts, as well as your partner's. Together, you are the ones defining the value system, boundaries, and traditions that you want for your family.

    2. Build your team of support - from good pals to a virtual community. Don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it.

    3. Find the funny when you can and go easy on yourself when you think you might have messed up. Raising multiples isn't a cakewalk, so laughter and self-compassion come in handy during the gnarliest of times.

Dad Postpartum Depression is Real | Twin Mom Jayme Wise

Dad Postpartum Depression is Real | Twin Mom Jayme Wise

In today's episode, Nat chats with Jayme Wise,  mom to 20-month-old twins, about conceiving her twins a few days apart thanks to multiple ovulation, symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD), preeclampsia, delivery at 37 weeks, a rocky start to breastfeeding,  a partner who suffered from dad postpartum depression, and so much more.

Jayme Wise is a catastrophe claim rep who works about 50-60 hours a week from St. Louis, Missouri. She and her husband Andrew have been married since June of 2018 and have 20-month-old twins. They enjoy lots of walks in the park and reading Brown Bear, Brown Bear approximately 600 times a day.

Jayme's Top 3 Pieces of Advice for Twin Parents:

    1. Talk about EVERYTHING with your partner before the babies are born. And I mean EVERYTHING. Talk about an action plan for preterm labor, talk about your hospital bag and what it should contain, talk about worst case scenarios for pregnancy/delivery, talk about what your partner would need to do to advocate for you in the event that you can’t advocate for yourself, and talk about what life is going to look like when you bring them home. And have a back up plan for ALL of that.. set expectations with your partner about distribution of housework, baby care, etc. and make sure to discuss PPD in as much detail as you can to be aware of the symptoms / signs. My husband actually got PPD after delivery but we were able to recognize it because we’d discussed it in detail.

    2. GET OUT OF THE HOUSE. When you are comfortable enough after delivery to push the stroller, get used to putting both babies in & out of car seats and taking them for walks, on midday drives, etc. Getting out of the house and into the sun whenever possible truly helps to make you feel like a human being again. Going for a walk in the park with your tiny human beings marveling at nature somehow feels 6000 times more amazing when you’ve got millions of postpartum hormones coursing through your body!

    3. Love your partner truly, madly, deeply - sounds so cheesy but just try to remember at every single step that this is the person you’ve chosen to be your partner in crime, your love, and your other half. Your babies were born out of the love you share with that person and they’re going to go into the world (hopefully) exemplifying that love to everyone they meet. I heard so many pieces of advice about “not getting a divorce in the first year because you can make it!” And I was honestly a little horrified? Having twins definitely made my husband and me closer and I’m so grateful for that!

What She Wishes She Had Done Differently:

    1. Wish I would not have given up on breastfeeding both babies. My hospital stay was rough, and the lactation consultant that we had was just... mean. The day nurses weren’t that helpful in terms of getting babies to latch and I couldn’t stand hearing “well they only need a couple of drops of colostrum! Their bellies are so small!” anymore, so on the second night we finally had to beg a night nurse to order formula, and the twins were eating but then they made an assumption that I just didn’t WANT to breastfeed so I no longer got help. It was such a frustrating and saddening experience. My son refused to nurse most of his first year and would actually scream every single time I tried. Sometimes he’d settle down and nurse and other times he’d fight until I gave up and just gave him a bottle.

    2. I wish I would have worked out more and created a time for myself to actually focus on my health.
