The Orono Cook Book [Orono, Maine • 1906]

The Orono Cook Book [Orono, Maine • 1906]

On our second episode, we’re talking about The Orono Cook Book, compiled in 1906 by the Ladies of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Orono, Maine. This cookbook is full of fantastic turn of the century advertisements from a wide variety of local businesses, and a few national brands, too. We’ll talk to Anthony Sammarco who literally wrote the book on the history The Baker Chocolate Company -- they’ve got an ad in the book -- and we’ll share the results from the recipes we made, including something called a “Puffet!” Finally, you won’t want to miss our conversation with Olympic Gold Medalist Joan Benoit Samulson about men’s clothing. What does that have to do with community cookbooks? Make sure to listen!

In this episode we discuss the role that advertising can play in community cookbooks, and how they were an early version of crowdfunding. We also talk about the changing role of women in society in the early 1900s, and discover a number of ground breaking women in Orono in 1906.

Special thanks to our guests Anthony Sammarco and Joan Benoit Samuelson.

Heather earned her BS in Biology, and an MS in Marine Bio-resources from the University of Maine before working as a Senior Biologist at Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota Florida. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Florida in 2007, and then worked as a post-doctoral scholar at the same institution studying the effects of environmental pollutants on the endocrine system of aquatic animals.

In 2010, Heather joined the Medical University of South Carolina’s School of Medicine as an Assistant Professor examining how contaminants can alter maternal-fetal health. Heather returned in 2011 to the University of Maine’s School of Marine Sciences. Heather’s current research seeks to understand how human-induced changes in the environment, whether it be climate change, ocean acidification or pollutants, can affect the reproduction and development of aquatic animals that are important to Maine’s economy. She positions her research to turn knowledge into solutions that contribute to the resilience of Maine’s ocean resources.

Heather presented at the MSF Showcase Event 5 Minute Genius in 2017. You can see her video at the MSF YouTube channel

Heather also spoke with Composer Lucas Richman about her work, as part of his research for The Warming Sea, and was scheduled to present at the 2020 MSF before it was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ben Bishop on The Cam & Strick Podcast

Ben Bishop on The Cam & Strick Podcast

Ben Bishop came into the league relatively unknown but has developed into one of the top goalies of his era. A native of St. Louis, Bishop is by far the greatest goalie in the history of St. Louis hockey. He's also had a crazy year...from a tornado hitting his Dallas home, to Stars Head Coach Jim Montgomery being abruptly fired, to a pandemic pausing the season, Bishop has seen his fair share this season. He also was the best player on the ice in a Game 7 double OT loss to his childhood team, the St. Louis Blues, last spring. A game in which Bishop, who's basically taller than Cam and Andy combined, stood on his head and nearly advanced Dallas to the Western Conference Final. Bishop has had an unreal career that may not have happened if he wasn't invited to play in a 2004-2005 lockout charity game involving several future Hall of Fame players who happened to be NHL stars at the time. Bishop was just 17 years old. Blues management happened to be at the game and drafted Bishop in the 3rd round the following June. Bishop has been great, not good, but great, at every level he's played. Check out his story, right here, on the Cam and Strickland Podcast.

#20: Dr. Jason Bolton | University of Maine

#20: Dr. Jason Bolton | University of Maine

This week, the guys go geek and talk with Dr. Jason Bolton, a food science professor at the University of Maine. In addition to creating and teaching the course "Brewing with Food Science" at UMaine, Jason is also the food safety specialist of the University's Cooperative Extension, which serves as a resource for Maine's brewing industry, as well as all food and beverage producers and retailers in the state.
While Noah and Matty were intimidated by his immense education, this good doctor was able to keep the conversation incredibly approachable and very funny, despite his handsomeness (some people get all the luck..). We talk about his work with Allagash (which resulted in a published paper), the loose cannon that is Brettanomyces, UMaine's role as a resource for the state's food and bev industry, and the goal and future of brewing education at state universities. We also talk a lot about balsamic vinegar, and most importantly, about the greatest show ever created - Seinfeld.

#13 | Learn How to Become an Executive Producer or Own Your Own Theater with the Owner of Hackmatack Playhouse: Michael Guptill

Dreaming of opening up your own theater? Interested in becoming an executive producer? Ambitions of becoming a sales and marketing manager? Want to learn more about the business of buying/selling/marketing produce?  If so, you will not want to miss this podcast!  Even if none of these subjects interest you, we think that you will really enjoy our conversation with Michael Guptill.  His story is fascinating!

Michael Guptill is the owner/executive producer of Hackmatack Playhouse,  located in Berwick, Maine. In this episode, we ask Michael all the details of running a theater, we talked about his college years at the University of Maine, Orono  and we got into the details of his "real" job as the sales and marketing manager at Gold Bell.

He provides tips on how to work your way up to his current position and lots of interesting tips on how to manage a summer stock theater.

Hackmatack, named for the trees on the property, sits on nearly 200 beautiful acres and has been in the Guptill family since the 1600's!  It has been been a working farm since then.  It is still a working farm today, where they raise 100% all natural, grass fed bison (or buffalo).
