Stormwater ponds are important reservoirs for plastic pollution

Stormwater ponds are important reservoirs for plastic pollution

How much of the plastic we generate in our cities every day ends up in natural water ecosystems? And what are the paths for pollution to enter these systems?

Using a combination of environmental monitoring, laboratory analysis, and computer modelling, a team led by Dr. Mauricio Arias and his Watershed Sustainability lab at the University of South Florida aim to unravel the complex mechanisms responsible for the transport and degradation of plastic once they enter the aquatic environment.

Episode 2: Florida’s First War on Woke

Episode 2: Florida’s First War on Woke

Long before Governor Ron DeSantis declared a new war on wokeness, Florida lawmakers in the 1950s and 60s tried going after the NAACP, suspected communists and gay people in Florida schools and universities. The lawmakers upended life for countless numbers of their fellow Floridians before being upended themselves by their own zeal for the cause. Now that DeSantis is bringing this playbook to a presidential campaign, Rachel Maddow and Isaac-Davy Aronson ask what we can learn from the last time Florida went down this path.

    Featuring guests:

Stacy Braukman, author of Communists and Perverts Under the Palms: The Johns Committee in Florida, 1956-1965

    Shevrin Jones, Florida State Senator

I became familiar with Gusto several months ago through my last gig, and I was so pleased with the user experience that I had to find out who some of the folks were behind it. And wouldn’t you know it — one of them happens to be a former 28 Days of the Web honoree. Meet Jeff Jean-Baptiste!

After a quick check-in to see how things are going, Jeff talked about his role as a product designer and gave some info on his behind-the-scenes design work at the company. From there, Jeff shared his origin story of growing up in Miami, how anime became his gateway to art, and talked about his interest in architecture and how that drives his current design focus. He even gave some insight into the Orlando design community and talked about finding success at this point his career.

For Jeff — and for all of us, really — anything worth having is worth working hard towards. So get out there and make it happen!

    Uriah Millen

    Uriah Millen

Season two of “Mental Health Trailblazers, Psychiatric Nurses Speak Up,” keeps the conversation alive and meaningful with episode 6. This week, our host, Indrias Kassaye, is joined by Mr. Uriah Millen, a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) student, former Nurse Manager for the intensive care unit at St. Joseph's Hospital-North who recently moved on to behavioral health nursing. Mr. Millen opens up to Indrias about what he’s observed as a Black, immigrant man forging his own path in the field of psychiatric nursing. Uriah Millen believes providing mental health care is his calling and desires to impact minority youth suffering from mental illness and substance use.

Mr. Millen’s life took a couple of unique twists and turns leading up to his current career as a nurse. Uriah explains that he migrated to the United States from Jamaica, a year after being married, and leaving his career as a mortgage banker. Mr. Millen’s first influence in the world of nursing was his uncle. He already lived in the United States and encouraged Uriah to pursue nursing due to the financial and spiritual gains. Inspired by his new life, Uriah went to school and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in nursing in 2014 from the University of South Florida, in Tampa. Mr. Millen recalls, “We started with 60 students in the class and we ended up with… 18 of us actually graduating. There were three or four men… and I was the only African American [man] in the class.”

Mr. Millen’s experiences as an African-American male in a predominantly White and female-led field only inspired him to provide the most effective care for his patients at any stage in their journey–and also his associates. The last couple of years have been particularly challenging for nurses, but that has only encouraged Uriah to create spaces for his team to express their thoughts and share their experiences. He believes that those treating patients–especially in critical care–need a space to feel safe and supported by their peers in order to provide the most effective care. Mr. Millen is also focused on his patients and the factors that have led to the undeniable, upward trend in deaths by suicide and other mental health issues affecting African American youth. Uriah highlights the importance of engaging minority youth in conversations to address the mental health challenges brought on by the myriad pressures they face, including from social media, identity politics and COVID-19.

Uriah Millen has a passion for helping the underrepresented and underserved African American population experiencing mental health issues. He remains focused on reducing the stigma associated with mental illness and improving behavioral health access and outcomes for disadvantaged youth. Episode 17: You Ask, We Answer

Episode 17: You Ask, We Answer

Quincy and I are back for another Q&A episode in which we answer your questions! In this episode, we tackle questions about innovating to address diversity, equity, and inclusion in engineering curricula while pointing to faculty and programs that are exemplars and the connections to ABET requirements. One thing we did not emphasize in our discussion of equitable and communication as part of an innovative curriculum, but should have, is that communication is not a one-way street that's focused on delivering content. It is very much multidirectional, involving information sharing amongst different groups at different levels in different ways.  We wrap up with discussions of how to challenge inequities without (or while) being perceived as a threat, and whether industry or academia should be at the forefront of driving change.
