I meet people who their entire lives have never been taught that God cares about their work, but actually he has called you to serve Him there. More than that, he actually put you there to do something only you can do. As we have been learning in Ephesians, as Christians, we are called to take off our old self and put on our new self to live out our calling in all areas of our lives, not just church on Sunday. Whether paid or unpaid, our honest work produces something good. God is a worker, and he created us to work, and Jesus redeems us to work, not only as a means to provide for ourselves, but of worshiping Him and serving our neighbors. He not only calls us to work, but He is in our work with us. All work that produces good things not only honors God, but serves others. Our faith matters in our work.

Harvard Kennedy School Professor Danny Schneider says research shows that even as they were being lauded as heroes during the COVID-19 pandemic, working conditions for hourly workers were deteriorating. Eight years ago,  Schneider co-founded The Shift Project, which has built an unprecedented repository of data on scheduling and working conditions for hourly service workers. But if there was silver lining to the pandemic, it was that it also put a spotlight on the plight of workers who had been largely invisible as they dealt with low pay, ruthlessly unpredictable algorithmic scheduling, and health problems related to stress and overwork. And, as evidenced by recent successful efforts to unionize at places like Starbucks and Amazon, Schneider says hourly workers may even have found a voice in shaping their own working environments. The question, he says, is, "Are corporate executives and policymakers are actually listening?"

We humans crave structure and the beneficial, supportive container it provides. There’s a beauty in that falling short. It seems as though our ideas about these paths carrying us through life are replaced by the actuality of them carrying us more deeply into life again and again, further and further into the midst of its wild and unpredictable ways, with an increasingly greater capacity for being right there, right here. Along with this comes the freedom of no particular way to go, fully, and no particular way to be, fully – the possibilities of meeting and engaging with life unfold, open and endless, calling to us, calling for us. And we respond, capably and fully.

In this episode we ask the question, “which would you rather have, a life of predictable-certainty even though it isn’t real, or a life that is real but unpredictable and uncertain?”
