    Lady Bird: writing female protagonists

    Lady Bird: writing female protagonists

If you're writing a character-driven story with a female protagonist, or a female POV character, this episode is a must for you. With only one viewing it's easy to miss the storytelling goodness of Lady Bird because it doesn't offer up the kind of story Hollywood has trained us to expect (i.e., external action, male protagonist, hero's journey-style stories). What it does give is a nuanced, complex female protagonist whose internal conflict drives the story. Yay, Greta!

In this excerpt from my interview with Erika Armstrong, author of A Chick in the Cockpit: My Life Up in the Air, she talks about how, since publishing the book, she’s been blown away by the number of women who have reached out to her with their own experiences of domestic abuse. Asking “But Why?” with Twanna Harris

Asking “But Why?” with Twanna Harris

We're back! Welcome to Season 6 of the Fuck It All Podcast 🥳

Our guest this week is none other than the amazing Twana Harris. Twanna’s work is known all over the city of Atlanta as well as all over the country. She is the founder of Tribal Good, a fellow Solopreneur, and an incredible friend. Her work focuses on connecting corporations with multi-hyphenate creatives. Which is basically the intersection of everything we know and love!

As soon as Twanna agreed to come on the pod, I immediately knew what I would be naming this episode:

    “But why???”

The phrase, “but why?” can get us in a lot of trouble (like A LOT of trouble). Asking ourselves why we do the things we do throws a monkey wrench into our usual path of complacency. We begin asking ourselves why we tolerate the intolerable. And what if we just didn’t tolerate it? What if we started searching for something better?

The phrase “but why?” can be a catalyst for FIA moments. It disrupts everything we know and starts a kick-ass revolution in ourselves. It's a phrase that demands change, and we are the only ones who can make that change for ourselves.

In this episode, Twanna and I discuss how to disrupt existing models, find solutions, and keep the movement going. Twanna is a firm believer in the idea that we have so many FIA moments in our lives we might as well call it an FIA movement. And I have to agree with her <3

We have all new episodes coming your way so subscribe to the Fuck It All podcast, available wherever you listen to podcasts.

If a video is more your vibe, you can watch this episode on our YouTube channel!

    The Paper Lined Shack

    The Paper Lined Shack

When composer Jeff Beal (House of Cards, Carnivale, Pollock) originally found the diary of his great grandmother Della, he and his wife Joan were bowled over by the story it told: a first-hand account of a woman who was widowed and raising six kids on a farm in the early 1900's. Something about the matter of fact way she wrote of what seemed like incredible suffering and the efficiency of her words stood out to Jeff and Joan. They thought they should do something with it musically. But they were busy raising kids and the diary was placed back in its box. Twenty years later, Jeff was commissioned to write a piece and remembered the diary. This is the story of how a young widow's life story came to be sung by a Grammy-winning soprano over 100 years later.

We Can't Manage What We Can't Talk About - FIA x Menopause with Menopause Made Modern and Semaine Health

HOT DAMN - It’s Menopause Month! Is anyone else sweating?

You become a woman when you get a period, and you become invisible when you stop having one. In talking to SO MANY WOMEN, this is something we’ve heard time and time again...  that got us thinking, we need to dive deeper than hot flashes and mood swings and dispel the taboo around the "change." So we called in the experts!

This episode is dedicated to visibility across womanhood, and specifically what happens both inside our bodies, and outside in the world - when we experience menopause…. or, perimenopause for that matter.  (If you're thinking, WTF is perimenopause - that was us too! All answers are revealed in this ep!)

For this conversation, we are joined by our friend and partner Cath Lee, Co-Founder of Semaine Health; and Kamili Wilson, Co-Founder & CEO of the movement and community  Menopause Made Modern.

The Soul Solution with Vanessa Loder

The Soul Solution with Vanessa Loder

The sole solution is the Soul Solution. How many times in life does it feel like we’re searching for that one singular way to be, to live, to do that will save us the struggle and ensure we get it ‘just right.’

And, then realize 100% of the time that there is no one way; but rather only our way that makes something ‘right.’

This is the whole essence of Fuck “IT ALL.” Women are wrought with expectations, ‘shoulds,’ pressures and limitations of who and how we should be; and this week’s guest - feminist teacher and author, Vanessa Loder, joins the FIA Podcast to share her powerful and practical guide to help women who feel overwhelmed and exhausted to recover our true selves―and our joy in living.

Hit play to hear Vanessa’s own FIA moment(s) - yep, there are a few - and how she has developed a roadmap for coming home to yourself.

Queen of Manifestation with Jen Mazer

Queen of Manifestation with Jen Mazer

    FIA does manifesting! AH!

If you don't already know her (and many of you do!) prepare to have your minds blown and mindset changed.

Meet Jen Mazer - THE Queen of Manifestation

Jen came to us amidst a relatively "low vibe" moment in time (OK, OK, we were losing our fucking minds!) And it was hearing her voice on another podcast that took us down the rabbit hole of some serious Internet stalking only to realize that she was right here in our backyard (not literally, we're not THAT good at manifesting... yet 😉) and so graciously agreed to join us on the show... and then later become our very own manifestation & business coach 📈 .

Working hard to get what you want is the myth, and we love this episode AND this woman so much, because through real experience and tangible practices she helps women transform mindsets, trust themselves, and ultimately get everything last thing they've ever wanted - just like that.

Here's to Manifesting Made Easy (yep, it's her book, we 10/10 recommend).

Pioneers Always Get Shot First with Sarah Penna

Pioneers Always Get Shot First with Sarah Penna

Ambitious women - this episode is for you.

Sarah Penna is a digital media pioneer, serial entrepreneur, mom of 1 (90% OK with this choice at the time of the recording), wife to the one-time-number-6-most popular YouTube talent, and this week's FIA woman.

Sarah had a goal to build and sell a company before she turned 30. And, she did it with 15 days to spare, while also expecting her first (and only - more on that, too) child. She's the kind of woman you look at in awe, saying, "wow, does she have it all?"

Like anything, the answer is, "it depends."  This conversation spans ambition, the pressure of "peaking early," motherhood, mental health, reinvention, and why it's so important to have compassion for yourself every single day.

Hit play, and remember who TF you are because, like Sarah says, at the end of the day, "at least I was a pioneer."

Balance is a Verb, Not a Noun with Nicole Lapin

To the people that say money can't buy happiness, Nicole Lapin's take is that they either don't have a good relationship with money OR they don't know how to manage it well... YET. *Thinking to yourself - Eeeee, some things need to change.*  Yeh, us too. Start with this episode! 💰

Nicole had us at hello with her intelligent one-liners and "Damn, I needed to hear that" mic drops. In this conversation, Nicole shares her personal financial journey, and now expertise. Noting that despite her top-tier education, she didn't truly understand finances or mental health until they both "broke."

"Balance is a verb, not a noun," she says.  "We treat balance like we found it and it's under the couch. That's not real life, you know, balance and chaos have to coexist."

In her words, "I wanted to be a poet, and ultimately I became a writer, but not the kind I expected." Today, Nicole is a New York Times Bestselling Author of Miss Independent, Becoming Super Woman, Boss Bitch and Rich Bitch; the host of the Money Rehab Podcast; and a financial and career resource (check out The Money/Boss/Balance School and The Money Minute). AND still, like a true FIA woman, Nicole brings the #realtalk to this episode to share her story and lessons learned/and still learning.

    We'll leave you with this...

Genevieve Theseira-Haese on the 'Her Story' Movement

Genevieve Theseira-Haese on the 'Her Story' Movement
In this episode we speak to the Founder of the HerStory Movement of South Australia and Former Adelaide Mayoress, Genevieve Theseira-Haese. She explores the powerful untold stories of women uncovered by the HerStory Movement, as women not only became invisible back then - but nameless. Learning about the life experiences of women in history explains to us why society is the way it is now, and how we can shape a better future for everyone. We ask Genevieve about the complexities of ageing in our society, and if it differs in the past. She also casts light on the complexities of financial independence as a woman and businesswoman in modern times.

The Power of Resilience with Cassandra Worthy

The Power of Resilience with Cassandra Worthy

Change is hard, but it's also something to welcome, because - well - it's inevitable.

Meet Cassandra Worthy - old friend, new author, and founder of the company and movement Change Enthusiasm. This conversation starts talking about Cassandra's zone of genius - the work she does with people, leaders and organizations amidst change - but quickly veers into our favorite topic - the real, real of life, and how this superwoman is on a mission to help every single one of us stand in our power amidst change. (OK, you got my attention)

So what is Change Enthusiasm exactly? Well, it's simply put:

    1. The practice of harnessing the power of emotion to grow through change; and
    2. A growth mindset

Whether you're a woman in business, or just someone navigating everyday life, this episode is the dopamine hit you need to shift perspective, attune your energy, and ultimately reframe every hard thing you've ever gone through, as your goddamn superpower.

Allow Me To Re-Introduce Myself with Leah Attruia

Allow Me To Re-Introduce Myself with Leah Attruia

On the other side of growth, there is always a reintroduction - who we are now, meeting who we used to be.

Alopecia - it's not life threatening, but it is life altering. Meet Leah Attruia - an otherwise healthy and thriving 39 year old woman who rapidly lost all her hair over the span of 3 weeks.

In our culture, women's health and beauty are synonymous; and almost always include a woman with long flowing locks to match. This conversation is a real take on Leah's experience - going from perfectly healthy mom of a toddler, to a woman hiding fistfuls of hair in a grocery bag while on vacation with friends.

Today, two years after the diagnosis, Leah is sharing her story of self discovery that came with losing her hair, being diagnosed with a life-altering disease, and how life has changed - for the better and worse - and why she wouldn't go back.

This episode demands to be consumed alongside a giant cup of coffee or tea - just that kind of feel good.

To learn more about Alopecia - a disease very much still in its research infancy - please visit NAAF.org.

Don't Hurt Yourself with Creator Denayja Reese

"This is not a self-help book. This is the story about a young woman so full of my own grief that I was ready to meet death because I could not figure out how to deal with it. This is my story, told in five parts."

Meet Denayja Reese - author, producer, strategist, writer, host and FIA woman. This week the FIA Podcast went IRL - live audience, and all, OKKKK, - to talk with Denayja about her FIA moment(s), healing through grief, trauma, and addition, cultivating wellness, the radical act of sustainable and systemic self care (YES!), and how creativity and the power of story will change the world.

This conversation picks up after a live screening of Denayja's visual memoir, "Don't Hurt Yourself: A Visual Memoir Of Healing Through Grief, Trauma & Addiction." Her book and accompanying short film are the culmination and creative expression of her lived and learned experiences of healing following the abrupt and unexpected death of her mother at 18 years old.

In Denayja's words, "I have healed in places in which I thought I would bleed forever. I believe that you can too."

This Coming Out - It’s More Than Sexuality, It’s Individuality with Linda Fruits

This Coming Out - It’s More Than Sexuality, It’s Individuality with Linda Fruits

Happy Pride Month!!! Today we welcome one of the funniest, honest, beautiful and real women on Instagram. Linda Fruits is the founder of the content company and creator of the Instagram account @FruitsOfMotherhood that covers the sweet, sour, and sometimes rotten fruits that motherhood bears .

The catalyst for this ep was a post and blog Linda shared in August 2021, called, "Why my husband and I are calling it quits - even though we still love each other."

She says,"It took me 32 years to figure out what TikTok uncovered in a matter of minutes. I am attracted to women. Admitting that to myself was hard and then telling my husband was even harder...

Being attracted to the same sex never occurred to me until TikTok showed me a specific type of woman I had never really been exposed to before. And I felt something I had never felt before...

If you told me six months ago I would be writing this, I might've laughed in your face, but deep down inside, maybe I always knew it was coming. My content is not going to change. I'm still a mother who struggles every day, and my marriage jokes will also be the same since we're all living together under one roof...

My mission and everything I do is do bring acceptance to anyone who is feeling the same. All our differences and similarities make us who we are. This is who I am, and there is no changing it. Safe to say I'm even extra fruity now.

Here's to being fruity as hell, because as Linda says so beautifully, this coming out - it's more than sexuality, it's individuality.

For the women who have gone off script - we have two words for you - AUDREY MCLOGHLIN.

We start the conversation talking through her resume - which albeit wildly impressive and inspiring - is the least interesting thing about this woman. Yes, Audrey has built two companies inspired by the everyday women out there rewriting the rules - specifically on creating a simple, in-powered work “uniform;” AND in 2020 achieved B Corp certification for her company Frank & Eileen with an industry leading impact score of 97.5 (second only to Patagonia, NBD).

BUT, what we love is her real, raw take on entrepreneurship. The struggle and power that came with leaving her marriage while 4 months pregnant with her daughter (fyi, she does not recommend this judo move for everyone). And, her pledge to give back $10M in 10 years to women-led businesses. THIS IS MATRIARCHAL MANAGEMENT.

Please note: this episode is best consumed standing in front of your mirror with a dry erase marker to write down your daily affirmations for the next forever months.

Shop Audrey’s incredible companies below, and read more over at IT ALL Media's Blog for this week’s episode’s must-read gems.

This is an IT ALL Media Production. If you like what you hear, follow along at ITALLMedia.co and @itallmedia on Instagram and TikTok.

We are a women-centered media company rewriting the narrative on modern womanhood through story and collaboration.

    We're glad you're here.

    Lost Women of Science

I was on a zoom conference, I was bored. it was about using my zoom account, so it wasn’t extremely engaging.  I continued to listen while I wandered away from the conference and was looking on the zoom page that recommended podcasts.  One caught my eye…actually the word Cystic Fibrosis jumped out at me for obvious reasons. Then I saw the Lost women of science podcast and read the description.  It was about science pioneer, Dr. Dorothy Anderson.  I didn’t know anything about her, how could I not know anything about her? .Thanks to Dr. Anderson, CF was diagnosed.  Next, I read a description about the podcast and listened to every episode about Dr. Anderson, over and over again.  Host and Executive producer Katie Hafner does a wonderful job telling the story with her voice, and the voice of others.  Hafners co-executive producer, Amy Scharf is with us today to talk about all that they uncovered about Dr. Anderson’s life.

Amy is a bioethicist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. Amy is also the Chair of Board of Children’s Aid, a non-profit that provides comprehensive social, educational, and health services to children in NYC’s underserved communities and an Advisory Board member of the Johns Hopkins University Berman Institute of Bioethics.

We’re honored to talk with her.
