Ep. 157 Jessica Hooten Wilson Returns - Flannery O'Connor's Why Do the Heathen Rage?

In this episode, Jessica Hooten Wilson and I go deep in her ten year project of reckoning with Flannery O’Connor’s unpublished and unfinished 3rd novel Why Do the Heathen Rage? Jessica shares insights into Flannery’s writing process, themes in her fiction, her perspectives on race and social justice. She talks about reading O’Connor with charity and how that can provide new insights. We get into limitations because of Flannery’s illness that contributed to the depth and particularity of her writing. We also talk grace, sanctity and the connection between body and soul. So join us as we dig deep into the works of Flannery O’Connor.

Jessica Hooten Wilson is the Fletcher Jones Endowed Chair of Great Books at Pepperdine University and formerly Louise Cowan Scholar in Residence at the University of Dallas. She is the author of several books, most recently Reading for the Love of God. Her book Giving the Devil his Due: Flannery O’Connor and The Brothers Karamazov received a 2018 Christianity Today book of the year in arts and culture award and The Scandal of Holiness received a 2022 Award of Merit. In 2019 she received the Hiett Prize for Humanities from the Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture. Other awards include a Fulbright Fellowship to Prague, an NEH to study Dante in Florence, a Biola University sabbatical fellowship funded by the John Templeton Foundation, and the 2017 Emerging Public Intellectual Award. She is a Senior Fellow at The Trinity Forum.

Ep. 156 Brian Zahnd Returns - The Multi-Faceted Wonder of the Cross

Ep. 156 Brian Zahnd Returns - The Multi-Faceted Wonder of the Cross

In this episode, Brian and I have a conversation around the cross of Jesus and his latest book The Wood Between the Worlds. It’s a deep conversation around suffering and putting to shame the powers and principalities. We talk about the multi-faceted meaning of the cross and view it through a kaleidoscope, so we can uncover more and more depth of meaning. We talk about the Kingdom, galvanizing around an axis of power or an axis of love expressed in forgiveness, and the seduction of power we find in the Lord of the Rings. It’s a fantastic conversation that I know you will enjoy. So join us as we look at the multi-faceted wonder of the cross.

Brian Zahnd is the founder and lead pastor of Word of Life Church in St. Joseph, Missouri. Known for his theologically informed preaching and his embrace of the deep and long history of the church, Zahnd provides a forum for pastors to engage with leading theologians and is a frequent conference speaker. He is the author of several books, including When Everything's On Fire, Sinners in the Hands of a Loving God, A Farewell to Mars, and Beauty Will Save the World.

Ep. 149 David Fitch Returns - Reckoning with Power

Ep. 149 David Fitch Returns - Reckoning with Power

In this episode, David Fitch and I reckon with power in this conversation. We talk about worldly power versus Godly power. What’s the difference? Why do we need a new relationship with power? We talk about mutual submission, engaging the table for reconciliation and justice, non-coercive evangelism. We even engage in a conversation around power dynamics and the Middle East. It’s a fantastic conversation that is much needed as we continue to encounter abuse of power in the church. So join us as we reckon with power and hand over the reigns to God.

David Fitch (Ph.D Northwestern University) is a professor at Northern Seminary and a pastor at Mission Renew Church in Westmont, IL. He is married to Rae Ann and they have one son named Max. 32 2024 Vision & Intentions (no more resolutions), the holidays & Steph’s skin journey

32 2024 Vision & Intentions (no more resolutions), the holidays & Steph’s skin journey

The girls are back. In their first episode for 2024, Chloe and Steph discuss setting intentions and (not) resolutions for the new year. Chloe shares her intention setting process, which involves envisioning what you want your life to look like at the end of 2024, focusing on feelings.

They then identify key themes or areas of focus from their vision and make action plans for how to achieve those intentions over the course of the year through small, incremental steps. Chloe's themes were abundance, love, adventure, and nourishment. Steph is still deciding on her word but is considering words like fortify or strengthen.

They also discussed the importance of self-care, checking in on health, spending quality time with loved ones, and learning to be more at peace with difficult emotions. The podcast concluded with a card pull focusing on generosity and abundance for the new year.

    Other things discussed:

    • Chloe and Steph welcomed listeners to their first podcast episode of 2024. They discussed wanting to broaden their audience this year.
    • Steph shared a recap of her skin issues over the past year and the various steps she took like changing her diet, seeing a naturopath and dermatologist, and implementing a skincare routine to clear up her rosacea.
    • They also caught up on how their holidays went, with Chloe saying it felt like a bit of a blur but enjoyed spending time with family.
    • Steph mentioned Huwey's back issues limiting activities but still enjoying time with friends visiting.
    • Both were looking forward to more structure in the new year after a relaxing break.

    3.
Open your journal (or can be a plain piece of paper, or in your phone notes) and write Vision at the top and write down all that you saw, paying particular attention to your feelings.
    4.

Ep. 141 Steve Bouma-Prediger - Creation Care Discipleship

Ep. 141 Steve Bouma-Prediger - Creation Care Discipleship

In this episode, Steve Bouma-Prediger and I have a great discussion on creation, earthkeeping, and our role in caring for the earth as disciples of Jesus. Since the Bible starts and ends with rivers and trees, our first mandate is to care for the earth, and our vision of the future includes the earth we are now living on, we have a role and responsibility in the way we keep the earth, care for it, and pattern our life. What are the things we can do in our every day lives to be good earth keepers? Who is working on the major problems of the earth at the moment? How is social justice tied to ecological issues? We tackle these questions and more. So join us as we discover our role as earthkeepers as disciples of Jesus.

Steve Bouma-Prediger is the Leonard and Marjorie Mass Professor of Reformed Theology at Hope College in Holland, Michigan and the director of the Environmental Studies minor.  A graduate of Hope College, his Ph.D. is in religious studies from The University of Chicago. His most recent book is Creation Care Discipleship: Why Earthkeeping is an Essential Christian Practice. When not teaching or writing, he spends as much time as possible canoeing or backpacking in his favorite places in North America or simply hiking among the magnificent trees in southwest Michigan parks.

The Transition from Public to Private Markets with Chris Nero

Chris Nero, Founder and CEO of Bridgeport Financial Technology, brings 34 years of industry expertise to the show, where we discuss the financial markets evolution and the transition from public to private markets and the challenges and nuances of this shift.

We cover key aspects such as the importance of education in bridging the gap between public and private markets, the growth of accredited high net worth and ultra high net worth investors in private markets, and the role of additive–not disruptive–technology in facilitating this transition. We talk about  trends such as the popularity of private credit and the emergence of feeder structures to provide access to exclusive funds. We also highlight the significance of digitization and single source of truth and what that means for the industry in the long term. In our conversation, Chris emphasizes the importance of understanding the entire life cycle of private markets and private market investments and how it works as being critical in building a digital infrastructure that creates a seamless and transparent experience for advisors and clients alike.

Ep. 137 Jared Boyd - Facilitating Encounters of the love of God

Jared Boyd talks about finding freedom in the constraint of spiritual disciplines and a communal rule of life. Stop the Fear

    Stop the Fear

DEE:    So before Cereset, I have had, you know, medical issues for over half of my life and severe stress. And what I learned was trauma from dealing with that, for over half of my life kind of hit a point where I realized I needed something else to help me get through the mental side of those health issues. I had really become a little bit more isolated in the way that I was living my life in the sense that with the medical issues, if something was stressful, or I didn't feel, you know, safe eating certain foods, I would just avoid everything at all costs to prevent any type of scenario. But after Cereset, I realized I could conquer a lot of those fears from my past medical issues. And you know, it might sound funny, but you know, eating certain foods on an airplane, or, you know, trying foods I hadn't eaten in years, I was able to do again, and it wasn't scary to do it.

VENICE:   So can give me a little more of how the swallowing issues started with you and why foods were scary.

DEE:  Sure. So when I was 12 years old, I'm 26 now, pretty much overnight, I developed swallowing issues, eating food, I would choke on it. I also developed anaphylactic allergies overnight. So eating, which was something that I'd always loved became something that was scary. And over time, over the years, those issues progressed, they got worse. So I've kind of dealt with that for years. I actually had a surgery about a year ago to try to aid in the swelling issue, trying to you know, get me back eating more foods. But even though I had the surgery, I was still too scared to re introduce foods back into my life because I was, you know, rightfully afraid of a choking incident. But Cereset provided me the ability to kind of move past the fear, and slowly start reintroducing foods I hadn't eaten and, you know, I had not had  popcorn in six years. And now it's something that I can eat regularly.

VENICE:   Do you find you have more patience with people?Do you find you have more patience with people?

DEE:  Yes. Because I'm not stressed, I've determined. I didn't realize how you almost get to a point where you're just so stressed all the time. You're not even consciously aware that you're stressed. And until I went through Cereset and felt what it was like to be, you know, normal in the sense of normal stress levels again, I didn't realize how stressed I was every day.

VENICE:   Has your sleep changed at all.

Yeah, I actually realized I didn't even realize this until I finished with my initial Cereset appointments. But my entire life. I'm somebody that always would dream every night, I would remember my dreams. And about three years ago, I realized I stopped dreaming altogether. And since I started Cereset I am dreaming again. And I've noticed for me everyone's different but a correlation between being able to dream and being able to fall asleep.

VENICE:  Cool. And do you feel more rested when you get up?

DEE:  Yes, because I think I'm actually in a deeper sleep than I was before. Before I you know, the last three years is really when I had the sleep issues, but I've never had before. Falling asleep was almost impossible. And then staying asleep was also more difficult where I didn't have any of those issues before. I think COVID is what really started that for me, I got really sick with COVID. And I think it really messed up my sleep patterns and Cereset got me out of that sleep pattern.

VENICE:  Did you have a loss of smell and taste with COVID

DEE: Thankfully that was the only symptom I did not have. But after I got COVID Come to find out, you know, working with doctors, I did have the original strain of COVID. Back in December of 2019, before anybody knew what it was. And long COVID is something I dealt with for almost two y
