Tommy Edman only Cardinal Gold Glove finalist; Yadi Molina and Cardinals discuss potential return

MLB.com and New York Magazine contributor Will Leitch then joins the show to discuss the MLB Postseason and the possibility of Yadier Molina returning to the Cardinals in a coaching position. Brenden Schaeffer, Cardinals writer for KMOV.com, also joins the show to discuss what the Birds can learn from current teams having success in the postseason and the Yadi situation. Matt caps off the hour by admitting his sheer ignorance to the discography of Bary Manilow.

Comparing careers of Yogi Berra, Johnny Bench, Ivan Rodriguez, & Yadier Molina - Ep. 404

We spent the entire episode calling him I-Rod without ever mentioning Ivan Rodriguez by name!  We didn't mention a few catchers like Carlton Fisk and Gary Carter who were close.  We also did not talk about Josh Gibson who may have been the best of all time?!

    Eye of the Beholder

    Eye of the Beholder

We start off the last week of the regular season by setting up Wildcard Weekend, and looking to next year with Ohtani’s record deal and yet another return of Miggy. There was so much news about hair that we created a whole segment – Gunnar Henderson is Minor League Player of the Year, Harold Ramirez’s blue hair for autism awareness may inspire more postseason blue for the Rays, and cross-training with hockey introduces us to  Buoy the Sea Troll, the new mascot of the Seattle Kraken, who sports long blue hair as a “nod to hockey flow.”

The Cubs celebrate A League of Their Own in fine style, leading to a question about when is a baseball bat not a baseball bat – when it is a cane belonging to 95 year old Maybelle Blair and please let her take it on the plane. We love the weeks when Police Blotter can focus on multiple balks in one at bat. World Baseball Classic news focuses on Pakistan, Panama, and the seriously stirring and intimidating Haka done by the New Zealand team as a pregame ritual. Yadi will manage Puerto Rico, which involves more drama than one would guess, and the Puerto Rican women’s league is taking a hurricane break in the season but the players are rolling up sleeves to help with disaster relief.  The Hammers visit the White House in a surprisingly politics-free event, for better or worse. We say “Scorpions in your head,” “I’m done with my consonants,” and “I’ll process everybody’s sins if you get them to me before Thursday.”

Ep 98 - If You Miss Pitchers Hitting, Check Out the Astro Catchers

This week Hooks & Runs revisits the 3,000 hit club discussion from last week and then dives into the Astros 2022 season after 23 games. The episode wraps with Andrew, Craig and Rex discussing their favorite "obscure" albums.

Errata: The Astros used 32 pitchers in 2021. That Devo song is called "Jocko Homo." Rex's use of "NewWob" is actually "NWOBHM" and stands for New Wave of British Heavy Metal.

That All Star Game Thing was Us, Right?

That All Star Game Thing was Us, Right?

Opening weekend was full of heartbreak and highlights we didn’t see coming. Approving of a decision by Rob Manfred has us reeling, so we take you through the decision-making, and the aftermath, of yanking the All Star Game from Atlanta. Turns out it wasn’t just our rant, and there are also grammatical issues. Miggy’s homer in the snow, and outstanding pitching brought the fun, as did stellar boyfriend performances by Jose Abreu and Michael A. Taylor.  BTW, Eloy Jimenez is NOT dead, please stop scaring us. The COVID outbreak in the Nationals organization was a gut punch. It’s still 2020, people.

Pottymouth’s discussion of the dropping of “felony marijuana charges” against Luis Campusano leads to a PSA about probable cause (we aren’t lawyers but one of us may or may not teach HS government), complicated math about what quantity of drugs equals 79 “games”, and a general afterschool special about pot. Also in the police blotter, we continue to dislike Carlos Correa (don’t mess with Chappy), and express general approval of all things Nick Castellanos, including baring his neck to Yadi the Alpha Wolf.

Our grooming segment awards best opening day hair kudos, and some general appreciation of “fit” pitchers. My. Cleveland babysteps to a less racist place, and features a pinch-drummer for Opening Day. We celebrate Tim Melville (and his mom) and his CPBL no-hitter! We welcome new teams to the Fantasy Boyfriend Baseball League (Glen, Bryan, Diane, Karen, and Marla) and promptly lose to them.

Never Fear, the Bunker has Sports

Never Fear, the Bunker has Sports

Never fear, dear listeners, our bunker is six miles from the military lockdown in place to protect a peaceful transfer of power, and we have sports. And beer. MLB’s PAC is suspending and reviewing its political contribution policy in light of the insurrection.  Owners and players remain free to donate money wherever they like, but you don’t have to condone it. Citifield joins Petco Park, Dodger Stadium, and Minute Maid Park as a vaccine distribution location, with more ballparks likely to come. The Tri-City ValleyCats sue MLB and the Astros for $15million for being tossed out of the minors after 18 years as a short-season affiliate.

Pottymouth goes straight to the top for her Mariners boyfriend pick of #1 Kyle Lewis, reigning rookie of the year, and another shining example of  the young players showing up and giving back. Patti picks exceedingly motivated next big thing Jarred Kelenick, top Mariners prospect and likely left fielder. Honduran national hero Mauricio Dubón is Pottymouth’s Giants BF for the coming season, while Patti goes for former Met’s fan favorite Wilmer Flores. These two players give us the new vocabulary words “catracho” and “catire.”

Winter ball brings us a Game 7, baby, in LIDOM, a COVID reprieve, Yadi, and a good story about Roberto Alomar in LBPRC, and a lot of familiar names plus too many people in the stands in Venezuela. Women’s hockey starts 1/23 in Lake Placid and on Twitch TV.

Waino and Yadi are the most pure thing in baseball

Waino and Yadi are the most pure thing in baseball

Patti and the Pottymouth talk all things Cardinals with guest Tara Wellman, co-host of the Chirps and Gateway to Baseball Heaven podcasts. Tara takes us through the aftermath of the COVID-19 shutdown, the responsibility of national media to get the facts straight, baseball towns, and “The Cardinal Way.”

We look at the lightning rod that is Yadier Molina, and the resurgence of Cy Young-ish Adam Wainwright. Tara is happily on the I told you so end of knowing great things would come from Kolten Wong. Tara walks Pottymouth through the pitching squad past and present.

Tara leads us on a deep dive into MLB’s power play to take control of the Minors in which both player development and fan development will take a serious hit. Fewer teams lead to the loss of access points for communities, and the loss of the Albert Pujols of the future.
