Sarah Swett, Fiber Artist & Adventurer

Sarah Swett, Fiber Artist & Adventurer
Don't try to put Sarah Swett in a box—if you do, she might just weave a bag on it. (https://handwovenmagazine.com/inspiration-everywhere-handspun-yarn-tapestry-weaving/) Growing up on the East Coast, Sarah found herself more enchanted with knitting sweaters from farm yarn than the traditional college track. She spent her young adulthood as a ranch hand and cook in Montana and Idaho, where she brought her yarn in by pack mule. She fell in love with the Palouse region of western Idaho for its rolling hills and agricultural bounty, settled there, and began to explore the possibilities of home. She is as inspired by the sweeping landscape as by the tiny discoveries of making cordage from milkweed and dandelion she finds in her garden. When Melanie Falick featured Sarah in her 1996 book Knitting in America, she was equally enchanted with knitting, spinning, and weaving; she also pursues stitching and dyeing. Aside from a few years when injury kept her from knitting, it has been a constant companion, and she handspins nearly all of the yarn she uses for both knitting and weaving. But Sarah's most important craft is fiber play: weaving grocery lists into monumental tapestries, weaving iris-leaf cordage into tiny fringeless tapestry book covers, creating balanced plain-weave strips on backstrap looms, and sketching comics of a squirrel and crow weaving those bags around cardboard boxes. Sarah's tapestries have appeared in dozens of exhibitions, but she prefers not to stray far from home herself. Her Substack newsletter gives readers a weekly peek into her intriguing imagined and real worlds. What she most hopes to share, though, is not her playful approach to her life and art, but permission for others to explore their own. "I would like everyone to be enchanted by their life," she says, "and I would like them to be enchanted by what they're enchanted by—not what I'm enchanted by." It hardly seems possible not to be enchanted by Sarah's work, even if it ultimately inspires us just to get out and play. Visit the Long Thread Podcast website (https://longthreadmedia.com/podcast). Lynda Grace Black - Philly Fiber/Weaving & Knitting the Souls of the City - 007

Lynda Grace Black - Philly Fiber/Weaving & Knitting the Souls of the City - 007

Lynda and I are both Quakers and happen to be members of the same Quaker Meeting in Philadelphia. She was one of the first people I met after I joined the Quaker community and I’ve always known her as an artist and urban gardener. Unpretentious and one of the most authentic people you will ever meet, Lynda is a visual artist whose aesthetic is informed in part by her dad’s activism and her grandmother’s crochet lessons. Her crocheted vessels, paper collages and knitted assemblages are an expression of some of the stories we have yet to know and some of the ones we need to unlearn.

What I like about Lynda’s work is that she operates in a 3 dimensional way with materials that have their own unique textures and hues and when you really get into the meaning behind her art you realize that she makes her pieces come alive in more ways than one.

Lynda’s work has shown in numerous Philadelphia area venues, including The Colored Girls Museum, Seed on Diamond Gallery, The Barnes Foundation, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. An occasional DIY public space artist, she placed her crocheted vessels in trees in Philadelphia, St. Helena, Savannah, Berlin and London to represent lynchings and other government sanctioned brutality.

Lynda’s work is featured in the book Making Good: An Inspirational Guide to Being an Artist Craftsman. Lynda holds a BA in Journalism and MA in Education. Her self-guided study includes programs at Fleisher Art Memorial, Asian Arts Initiative and private training.

#52 - Kim Witten: Yarn Over-thinking, create succes with the help of coaching, mentoring and craft

My coach, Kim Witten, teaches us the difference between coaching, mentoring and therapy. Then, we move on to topics such as the struggle we creatives have balancing structure and freedom (for our craft), and also have an enlightening conversation about “imposter syndrome”. Kim shares a comforting perspective and cites the two psychologists who coined the term in the 1970’s.

Enjoy this incredible conversation with Kim Witten, transformational coach, for the first episode of A Smaller Life in the new year.

Ep. 90: Making Circular Fibres From Kelp (with Keel Labs in the US)

Ep. 90: Making Circular Fibres From Kelp (with Keel Labs in the US)

When looking for more circularity within the textile & apparel industry, most look to existing fibres and ways to elevate them. Keel Labs were on the hunt for something new and looked to the ocean. On this episode of Textile Innovation, WTiN talks to Tessa Callaghan, the chief executive officer and one of the co-founders behind Keel Labs.

Based in the US, the company has an eye for innovation, starting with its seaweed-derived yarn called Kelsun that holds a significantly lower carbon footprint compared to legacy fibres. Created using an abundant polymer found in the kelp, Callaghan says Kelsun harnesses the renewable and regenerative power of the ocean.

    Ep 181 The BIPOC Epoch

    Ep 181 The BIPOC Epoch

The New York State Sheep & Wool Festival was just last month, and it’s Thanksgiving already.  We’ve got a podcast for you from the wild and wooly, festive and colorful event.

If you’re in a work truck or jeans ad with all of those good looking farm people tossing bales of hay around, you might get the impression that anyone who produces food or fiber in America is…well, pretty vanilla.  And considering how many of our ag products are an amalgamation of cultures and peoples throughout our history (corn, beans, pigs, horses, cattle, turkey, cranberries, squash…), maybe we’d be smart to stop and think about how diversity has made us strong.

The BIPOC booth at Rhinebeck represented a slice of an underrepresented category in most of the visible ag press these days, and we were glad these delightfully different took time out from the crowd questions to answer some of ours (the gorgeous combinations of fiber and an aqua-color to (hand) dye for were developing right there in their breed barn booth.  Delicious).  BIPOC is an acronym that stands for Black, Indigenous and People of Color, and though some might wonder if this podcast will be politically correct – not so.  We hope you hear it and do your own thinking about why representation is so important to agricultural diversity of all types.  Our strength in humanity is in our many shapes sizes, and colors, and we hope you celebrate them all with us.

In this episode I talk about the role of strategy in your small business and how you don't have to change all that much to make better use of the time and effort you are already investing in communication, marketing, branding and all those other 'icky' business words.

Hopefully you'll get some information about how thinking things through just a little bit more, can make a big difference in how you present yourself as a business.

    Who we are

Block Club Chicago is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit news organization dedicated to delivering reliable, relevant and nonpartisan coverage of Chicago's diverse neighborhoods. We believe all neighborhoods deserve to be covered in a meaningful way.

We amplify positive stories, cover development and local school council meetings and serve as watchdogs in neighborhoods often ostracized by traditional news media.

    Ground-level coverage

Our neighborhood-based reporters don't parachute in once to cover a story. They are in the neighborhoods they cover every day building relationships over time with neighbors. We believe this  ground-level approach not only builds community but leads to a more accurate portrayal of a  neighborhood.

Stories that matter to you — every day

Since our launch five years ago, we've published more than 25,000 stories from the neighborhoods, covered hundreds of community meetings and send daily and neighborhood newsletters to more than 130,000 Chicagoans.

We've built this loyalty by proving to folks we are not only covering their neighborhoods, we are a part of them.

Some of us have internalized the national media's narrative of a broken Chicago. We aim to change that by celebrating our neighborhoods and chronicling the resilience of the people who fight every day to make Chicago a better place for all.
