124: Kristen Carney | Living Through a Lapse in Laughter

    en-usNovember 22, 2018

    Podcast Summary

    • Dealing with Depression and the Importance of Mental HealthDespite appearances, depression is a hidden struggle. Openly addressing mental health, sharing unique spaces through Airbnb, and pursuing education opportunities can improve personal and communal well-being.

No matter how successful or contented one may seem on the outside, depression can still be a hidden struggle. Jen and Kristen's experiences of dealing with depression while hosting a podcast about it, and the tragic loss of their co-host Stevie Ryan, highlight the importance of addressing mental health openly and candidly. Another key takeaway is that transforming a home into an Airbnb not only brings in additional income but also allows hosts to share their unique spaces and experiences with travelers, creating a sense of connection and adventure. Additionally, initiatives like Michigan Reconnect offer tuition-free community college education, providing opportunities for individuals to pursue their passions and better themselves. Overall, this episode emphasizes the importance of vulnerability, self-care, and exploring new opportunities to improve both personal and communal well-being.

    • Depression's Complexity and the Need for EmpathyDepression isn't just about being sad or having a bad day. It's a complex mental health condition that requires empathy and understanding. Offer support and avoid judgment.

Depression is not always apparent on the surface and can be difficult for others to understand. The speaker, who has experienced both being the observer and the observed, shares that it's easy to judge someone's happiness based on their external circumstances, but depression is a complex mental health condition that can't be explained by logic alone. The speaker emphasizes that when someone is in a depressed state, they cannot see a way out, and it's essential to offer support and understanding rather than judgment. The speaker also highlights that depression can be cyclical, and even those who have recovered can struggle to comprehend why someone would choose to end their life. Overall, the conversation underscores the importance of empathy, compassion, and education in addressing mental health issues.

    • Depression: A Dark Well with No LadderDepression is a common, treatable condition affecting millions. It can be debilitating, but help and support are available.

Depression can be an unexpected and overwhelming experience, much like being drunk but without a clear cause or remedy. Kristin shared her personal experience of falling into a depressive state, feeling disconnected from her happiness and unable to understand why. She described it as a "dark well" with no ladder to climb out, and the feeling of being in a state of mind that wasn't natural or hers. Depression affects millions of adults in the US alone, with over half not receiving any treatment. The rate of suffering is on the rise, with suicides increasing by 30% since 1999. The rise of the internet and social media may be contributing factors, as people are now exposed to more comparisons and feelings of FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). It's important to remember that depression is common and treatable, and reaching out for help and support can make a big difference.

    • Comparing our lives to others' highlight reelsSocial media comparison can lead to negative feelings and dissatisfaction, it's important to limit exposure to these influences and focus on our own happiness.

The endless variety of content on social media and other channels can lead to feelings of jealousy, inadequacy, and self-criticism. These feelings can accumulate and negatively impact our mood and overall well-being, often without us even realizing it. For example, seeing someone else's vacation photos or a delicious meal post can make us feel like our own lives are lacking. Even seemingly insignificant things, like being excluded from an email thread, can leave us feeling left out and sad. This constant comparison of our "blooper reel" to others' "highlight reels" can lead to a never-ending cycle of dissatisfaction. It's important to be aware of this phenomenon and limit our exposure to these negative influences, especially since they are now ubiquitous in our daily lives.

    • The impact of curated and fake images on social mediaSocial media's constant exposure to edited and manipulated images can lead to unrealistic expectations, feelings of inadequacy, and isolation. Strive for authentic human connections, both online and offline.

The curated and fake images we see on social media can create unrealistic expectations and isolate us from genuine human connection. The Instagram account, Celebface, serves as a reminder of the editing and manipulation that occurs, leading to a disconnect from reality. This constant exposure to perfection can negatively impact our mental health, causing feelings of inadequacy and isolation. It's essential to recognize the importance of human connection and strive for authentic interactions, both online and offline. The Internet, while offering comfort and acceptance for those struggling with depression, can also contribute to the need for validation and understanding. It's a complex dynamic, and we must be mindful of the potential negative effects while also utilizing the resources available to us for support and understanding.

    • Understanding Depression and Creating a Supportive EnvironmentDepression is complex, isolating, and misunderstood. Approach conversations with sensitivity and understanding, remember it's not a personal failing, and be patient, persistent, and open-minded in helping ourselves and others cope.

Coping with depression is an important first step before trying to solve it. Depression is a complex condition, and it's not something that can be fixed overnight. People going through depression often feel isolated and misunderstood, so talking about it with others can be helpful. However, it's essential to approach these conversations with sensitivity and without judgment. Depression can be a natural response to injury or trauma, and it's important to remember that it's not a personal failing. By understanding this, we can create a more supportive and understanding environment for those dealing with depression. Additionally, it's crucial to remember that everyone's experience with depression is unique, and what works for one person may not work for another. Therefore, it's essential to be patient, persistent, and open-minded in our efforts to help ourselves and others cope with this condition.

    • Understanding Depression's ComplexitiesDepression is a complex mental health issue, not a sign of laziness or weakness, and requires professional help and understanding.

The human brain is incredibly complex and protective, even when it may seem weak or causing inconvenience, such as in the case of depression. A study suggested that people with depression may lack a substance called L-Carnitine, but the complexities of supplements and potential risks make it important not to jump to conclusions or self-diagnose. Depression can be a stubborn and strong force, but it's essential to remember that it's not a random defect or a sign of laziness. It's important for friends, family, and society as a whole to recognize and understand the severity of depression and not judge or minimize those experiencing it. The speaker's personal experience of struggling with depression for years and feeling lazy or weak was a common misconception, but ultimately, she came to understand that it was a mental health issue that required professional help and understanding.

    • Prepare a list of supportive contactsPrepare a list of supportive contacts, including those beyond close friends and family, to make reaching out for help less overwhelming during times of depression and isolation.

When experiencing feelings of depression and isolation, it's crucial to have a list of supportive people readily available. This list should include contacts of those who care about you, not just close friends or family, but also individuals who held significant roles in your life. Having this list prepared can help eliminate a step when feeling low and make reaching out for support less overwhelming. People often want to help more than we realize, and having this support system in place can make a significant difference during difficult times.

    • Creating a 'lifeline list' of positive influencesCreating a list of supportive people and expressing gratitude can improve mental health during tough times. Confidence can be built through anonymous conversations online.

Creating a "lifeline list" of people who have positively impacted us and communicating the reason why they're on the list can help us during times of depression. This list serves as a reminder of the value we hold in others' eyes when we may feel worthless. It's important to tell those on the list that they're included, so they're prepared for unexpected contact. People may initially feel burdened by the idea of reaching out, but the interactions can actually uplift us and start our day on a positive note. For those hesitant to open up to loved ones, starting with anonymous conversations on platforms like Reddit can help build confidence and articulate feelings. The ultimate goal is to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health struggles and encourage open communication with trusted individuals.

    • Starting Small: Sharing Depression with Trusted OnesBegin with trusted individuals, start with small conversations, and be honest when sharing feelings about depression.

When it comes to sharing your feelings about depression with others, it's important to start small and with people you trust. Beginning with someone you're not as close with, like a podcast host or a message board community, can help you gain comfort and confidence before approaching family members. When you do share your feelings, make sure it's not too small or insignificant, but also not overwhelming. Starting a conversation with "I'm having a hard time" can be a good starting point. Remember, it's essential to be honest and not pretend to be better than you are. Finding a therapist or psychiatrist is crucial for managing depression, but the process of finding one can be challenging, especially when dealing with the condition's symptoms. It's a significant undertaking, but taking the first step towards seeking help is vital.

    • Finding Affordable Mental Health SupportDespite challenges, resources like sliding scale clinics and trusted recommendations can make mental health support more accessible for those on a budget.

Seeking mental health support, whether it be therapy or medication, can be a challenging and frustrating process, especially for those on a tight budget. However, it's important to remember that there are resources available, such as sliding scale clinics, that can make therapy more affordable. Additionally, asking for recommendations from trusted healthcare professionals can increase the chances of finding a responsive and supportive mental health provider. For those who may feel helpless or unwilling to seek help on their own, reaching out to a suicide hotline or enlisting the help of a loved one can be crucial steps towards finding the support needed. Overall, the process of finding mental health support can be difficult, but it's important to remember that you are not alone and that there are resources and people available to help.

    • Evaluating mental health providers is essentialRead reviews, trust instincts, prioritize comfort for best mental health treatment outcomes

When it comes to seeking mental health treatment, taking the time to read reviews and thoroughly evaluate potential providers is crucial. A bad experience with a psychiatrist, as shared by the speaker, could have been avoided if they had heeded warnings from others. Trusting your instincts and being comfortable with your provider are also essential, as mental health treatment requires vulnerability and a strong therapeutic relationship. Ultimately, I'm reminded that we are our best advocates, and it's essential to prioritize our well-being by carefully considering our choices.

    • The Hidden Struggles of Mental HealthCreating safe spaces for open conversations about mental health is crucial as many people hide their struggles, breaking the stigma and encouraging help-seeking.

People dealing with mental health issues may hide their struggles behind a curated image, making it difficult for others to understand the extent of their suffering. This was highlighted in a candid conversation between Jordan Harbinger and Kristen Kearney, who shared her personal experience with depression. Despite appearing jovial and introspective in public, Kristen had kept her deepest struggles hidden, even from close friends. This underscores the importance of creating safe spaces for open conversations about mental health, as many people may be dealing with these issues in silence. By sharing their stories, individuals like Kristen can help break the stigma surrounding mental health and encourage others to seek help. If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health issues, remember that you're not alone, and resources are available to help.

993: Johann Hari | The Skinny on 'Magic Pill' Weight-Loss Drugs

Are new weight loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy "magic" pills that can put an end to the obesity epidemic? Johann Hari is here to give us the skinny!

What We Discuss with Johann Hari:

    • Processed and ultra-processed foods are a major driver of the obesity epidemic, as they undermine the body's natural ability to feel full and satisfied after eating. Moving from fresh, whole foods to mostly processed foods is strongly linked to the dramatic rise in obesity rates.
    • Obesity is a complex issue with biological, psychological, and social causes. Factors like genetics, emotional eating, trauma, and the food environment all play a role. Stigmatizing or shaming people for their weight is cruel and counterproductive.
    • New weight loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy work by artificially boosting satiety hormones like GLP-1, helping people feel full faster and eat less. They are showing impressive weight loss results, but also come with potential risks and side effects that are not yet fully understood, especially in the long-term.
    • While these new drugs may help many people, they are not a magic solution. They don't address the underlying drivers of the obesity crisis in the food system and environment. To make a real difference, we need broader changes to make healthy eating the easy, default option.
    • The good news is, each of us can take positive steps today to improve our health, no matter our current weight. Focus on adding more whole, minimally processed foods to your diet, and find physical activities you truly enjoy. Prioritize getting good sleep, managing stress, and building a strong social support network. Small, sustainable lifestyle changes can make a big difference over time. Be patient and kind with yourself in the process. You have the power to transform your health, one choice at a time.
    • And much more...

    992: Royals | Skeptical Sunday

What's the point of the publicly funded British Royal family in the modern world? Andrew Gold puts the monarchy under a microscope on this Skeptical Sunday!

    On This Week's Skeptical Sunday:

    • The British monarchy is a centuries-old institution that has had a significant impact on the UK's culture, politics, and history. While the monarch's role is largely ceremonial, the royal family still holds influence and plays a significant part in British society.
    • The British Royal Family receives public funding through the Sovereign Grant, which is calculated as a percentage of the profits made by the Crown Estate. The Sovereign Grant covers official expenses, while the monarch also has personal income from private estates.
    • The monarchy faces challenges in maintaining its relevance in an increasingly democratic and progressive world. The royal family must balance tradition with adapting to changing societal values and expectations.
    • The popularity of individual members of the royal family, such as Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles, Prince William, and Prince Harry, can significantly impact public perception of the monarchy as a whole.
    • Despite the controversies and challenges surrounding the British monarchy, it remains an integral part of the nation's identity and continues to captivate people worldwide. By focusing on their roles as symbols of unity, continuity, and tradition, while also embracing positive change and engaging in meaningful charitable work, the royal family can maintain its relevance and contribute to the well-being of the British people and the global community.

990: Jonathan Haidt | How Gen Z Became the Anxious Generation

990: Jonathan Haidt | How Gen Z Became the Anxious Generation

Jonathan Haidt is here to talk about his latest book, The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness.

What We Discuss with Jonathan Haidt:

    • Social media and smartphones have drastically altered childhood since the early 2010s, leading to increased rates of anxiety, depression, self-harm, and suicide among teens, especially girls.
    • Virtual interactions on social media are disembodied, shallow, and can spread mental health issues among susceptible teens. Prestige biased learning causes teens to emulate influencers, even those promoting unhealthy behaviors. Smartphones and social media also enable sexual predators to easily target children online.
    • Overprotection in the real world and underprotection online are both mistakes that need to be reversed. Parents have allowed kids too much unsupervised screen time while restricting their independence and free play in the physical world out of exaggerated fears.
    • Schools and parents need to set clear boundaries around technology use. No smartphones before high school, no social media until age 16, and phone-free schools from bell to bell are key norms to establish. The longer parents delay introducing these technologies, the better.
    • Although the situation is serious, positive change is possible when parents, educators, and lawmakers work together. Parents can start by giving kids more independence and free play time offline, schools can go phone-free, and governments can pass laws to make online spaces safer for kids. With collective action, we can restore a healthier childhood for the next generation. Small steps like "Free Play Fridays" for neighborhood kids can make a difference right away. By coming together to solve this, we can ensure today's youth have the space to develop into competent, well-adjusted adults.
    • And much more...

What We Discuss with Robert Mazur:

    • How Robert, working undercover for US Customs and the DEA, posed as a money launderer to infiltrate Pablo Escobar's Medellin cartel and other criminal organizations.
    • Money laundering enables cartels to produce their most lethal product: corruption. Corrupt officials and governments facilitate drug trafficking operations.
    • Money laundering methods are highly sophisticated, involving legitimate businesses, secret codes, and multi-national operations to evade detection.
    • Banks and the global financial system need to change to combat money laundering effectively, with severe penalties for those involved in facilitating the flow of illicit funds.
    • Despite the risks and close calls, Robert continued his undercover work to gather intelligence and evidence against drug cartels until it became clear that the price his family was paying was not worth continuing.

What We Discuss with Robert Mazur:

    • How Robert, working undercover for US Customs and the DEA, posed as a money launderer to infiltrate Pablo Escobar's Medellin cartel and other criminal organizations.
    • The extensive planning that goes into an undercover operation, including developing a detailed backstory, establishing fake businesses, and coordinating with informants and other agents.
    • How Robert built rapport with targets by researching their interests, using active listening, and offering them gifts to gain their trust.

    986: Porn | Skeptical Sunday

Has technology weaponized pornography into a public health crisis? Michael Regilio takes us through modern porn's ins and outs on this Skeptical Sunday!

    On This Week's Skeptical Sunday:

    • High-speed internet porn is a recent phenomenon that provides an intense, novel experience unlike traditional pornography, hacking into our brain's evolutionary desires for new mates and triggering dopamine responses similar to drug addiction.
    • Pornography use, especially among adolescents and young adults who grew up with easy access to internet porn, has been linked to erosion of gray matter in the brain's prefrontal cortex, which controls impulse control and decision-making.
    • Porn use has been associated with sexual disorders like erectile dysfunction in young men, as well as difficulties forming emotional bonds and intimacy in relationships.
    • While some psychologists dispute the existence of "porn addiction," neuroscientific evidence shows porn use can lead to compulsive behaviors and brain changes resembling substance addictions.
    • While some political efforts have been made to declare porn a public health crisis, there is little policy action based on scientific evidence to provide resources for treatment and awareness.

984: Susan Casey | Unraveling Mysteries in the Ocean's Darkest Depths

What challenges can the ocean help us meet, and what must we do to safeguard its treasures? The Underworld author Susan Casey dives deep for answers here!

What We Discuss with Susan Casey:

    • The ocean plays a crucial role in regulating the Earth's climate and serves as the largest carbon sink on the planet, making its preservation essential for mitigating climate change.
    • The ocean is home to a fascinating array of creatures that have adapted to extreme conditions, such as iron-breathing microbes, glass sponges, and jellyfish that can reverse their life cycle.
    • Pollution, including plastics, chemical weapons, and nuclear waste, has severely impacted the ocean ecosystem, with some deep-sea creatures found to have plastic particles embedded in their organs.
    • There are an estimated three million shipwrecks on the ocean floor, preserving valuable historical artifacts and information — such as the Antikythera mechanism, an ancient Greek analog computer.
    • Exploring the ocean can lead to groundbreaking discoveries in medicine, Earth's history, and climate, providing valuable insights for addressing humanity's challenges — provided we safeguard this treasury of knowledge for current and future generations.
