    enApril 23, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • Understanding Barriers to AssertivenessFear of conflict, lack of clarity, and concerns about dislike or disrespect can hinder assertiveness. Assertiveness isn't about being rude, but expressing thoughts, feelings, and needs respectfully.

Assertiveness is a crucial skill that can significantly impact self-esteem and self-love, yet many people struggle to be assertive due to various reasons. Fear of conflict, lack of clarity about what one wants, and concerns about being disliked or disrespected are common barriers. It's essential to understand that assertiveness doesn't mean being rude or offensive, but rather expressing one's thoughts, feelings, and needs respectfully. By acknowledging and addressing these barriers, individuals can work towards becoming more assertive and improving their relationships with themselves and others.

    • Expressing needs, wants, and feelings respectfullyAssertiveness is expressing needs, wants, and feelings respectfully to build strong relationships and advance in your career.

Assertiveness is a crucial skill for effective communication in various aspects of life, including personal relationships and the workplace. It's important to remember that assertiveness should always be respectful and gentle, with no aggression in tone. When you're assertive, you're expressing your needs, wants, and feelings clearly, which helps prevent misunderstandings and misreadings. Being assertive also shows confidence and self-assurance, which can positively impact your relationships and career growth. Conversely, failing to be assertive can lead to frustration, resentment, and communication breakdowns. Therefore, it's essential to practice open, gentle assertiveness to build strong, healthy relationships and advance in your career.

    • Expressing yourself respectfullyAssertiveness is about setting clear boundaries, asking for clarification, and expressing thoughts, feelings, and needs respectfully without manipulation or aggression.

Assertiveness is an essential skill for personal growth and effective communication. It involves standing up for yourself and expressing your thoughts, feelings, and needs respectfully, without manipulation or aggression. Being assertive doesn't mean being aggressive or cancelling out someone else's assertiveness. It's about setting clear boundaries, asking for clarification, and being consistent. Assertiveness can be challenging, especially for passive individuals or when dealing with aggressive communication styles. However, it's important to remember that assertiveness is about being the gatekeeper for you and communicating your needs and boundaries, not trying to change others. Consistency in consequences also plays a crucial role in assertiveness, especially in parenting and other relationships.

    • Effective communication and setting boundariesClear communication and setting boundaries are vital for earning respect and freedoms. Addressing issues calmly and factually promotes accountability and de-escalates conflicts.

Effective communication and setting boundaries are crucial in various aspects of life, including parenting and professional relationships. The speaker emphasizes the importance of completing tasks and honoring agreements to earn freedoms and respect. When faced with requests or demands, it's essential to communicate clearly and assertively while maintaining composure. If someone fails to fulfill their responsibilities, addressing the issue calmly and factually is not aggressive but necessary for accountability. Additionally, if someone becomes defensive or aggressive, remaining calm and confirming discussions in writing can help de-escalate the situation and establish a clear record of communication.

    • Expressing yourself honestly and clearlyAssertiveness is about communicating feelings, wants, and needs without manipulating or intimidating others, leading to increased self-respect and self-esteem.

Assertiveness and dominance are not the same. Assertiveness is about clearly communicating your feelings, wants, and needs without manipulating or intimidating others. It's important to be assertive consistently, even if the outcome isn't always favorable, as it sets boundaries and helps others learn how to treat you. Being assertive leads to increased self-respect and self-esteem. It's not about having a win every time, but about expressing yourself honestly and clearly. Avoid confusing assertiveness with aggression or manipulation. Remember, the goal is to teach people how to treat you with respect.

    • Practicing Assertiveness for Personal Growth and Effective CommunicationExpress needs, wants, and boundaries confidently while respecting others' to foster open and honest discussions, improve relationships, and gain clarity about yourself and your desires.

Being assertive is essential for personal growth, healthy relationships, and effective communication. It allows you to express your needs, wants, and boundaries, while respecting others' as well. To practice assertiveness, transform questions into statements, be clear and honest in your communication, and understand that it's okay to say "no" or prioritize yourself. By being assertive, you'll gain clarity about yourself and your desires, improve your relationships, and foster open and honest discussions. Remember, assertiveness doesn't mean being aggressive or manipulative; it means being confident and respectful while standing up for yourself.

    • Expressing Confidence and Certainty in Your RequestsCommunicating assertively by stating your needs and limits confidently helps build healthy relationships and reduces misunderstandings.

Assertiveness is key when communicating your needs and limits, whether it's in a personal or professional context. If you express confidence and certainty in your requests, people are less likely to push back. For instance, instead of asking if your ideas make sense or if it's okay to take time off, try stating that you're willing to discuss further or that you will be taking time off on specific dates. Additionally, don't be afraid to stand up for yourself and set boundaries. If you know you're capable and dedicated to your job, don't hesitate to ask for what you need. Remember, it's important to communicate clearly and confidently to avoid misunderstandings and build healthy relationships.

    • Expressing needs and setting boundariesClear communication is crucial for setting healthy boundaries and expressing needs in relationships. Communicate self-awareness, respect, and avoid manipulative tactics.

Clear communication is essential for setting boundaries and expressing needs. Whether it's at work or in personal relationships, being upfront about what you can and cannot handle, and what you do and don't enjoy, can prevent misunderstandings and help maintain healthy dynamics. Remember, it's important to communicate from a place of self-awareness and respect for yourself and others. Don't aim to please in the moment at the expense of your own well-being. Instead, be clear about what you want or need, and draw boundaries where necessary. Reciprocate respect for others' boundaries, and avoid manipulative or guilt-tripping communication styles. By prioritizing clear and respectful communication, you can build stronger relationships and reduce conflict.

    • Communicating assertively for healthier relationshipsClear and honest communication builds stronger connections, even when outcomes aren't ideal. Practice assertiveness in written communication and approach relationships with transparency and a willingness to work towards solutions.

Being assertive is about clear and honest communication, not about getting a desired outcome. It's important to communicate how we feel and keep communication open, even if the outcome isn't ideal in the moment. This can lead to healthier relationships and a more authentic way of living. It's also important to practice being assertive, starting with written communication, and to approach relationships with transparency and a willingness to work together towards solutions. Remember, the goal is to build stronger connections and understandings, not to manipulate or control others.

    • Practicing assertiveness in trusted relationshipsExpress feelings respectfully, start small, build self-esteem, use card games, and be kind to self

Assertiveness is a skill that can be practiced and developed incrementally, starting with trusted relationships. Assertiveness is respectful communication aimed at solving problems and should not be confused with aggression. Start small with expressing feelings in messages and emails, and make statements instead of asking for reassurance. Remember, being assertive is a way to build self-esteem, self-love, and self-respect. Card games can also be a helpful tool for practicing assertiveness. Don't hesitate to seek deeper insights in a future episode on the topic. And finally, be kind to yourself and don't tolerate disrespect from others or yourself.

    BUT FIRST!

    BRAIN FACT:
Central Sensitization and chronic pain: the phenomena when there is an enhancement in the function of the neurons and the circuits that are involved in nociceptive pathways causing an echo or remembered pain. It happens because of an increase in membrane excitability and synaptic efficacy. It’s a great example for how neuroplasticity works in a negative way and has been linked to chronic pain.

    330. HEAD NOISE: The Ick List, Blind or Blindsided and Should I Stay or Should I Go?

    330. HEAD NOISE: The Ick List, Blind or Blindsided and Should I Stay or Should I Go?

First up I’m going through your ICKS – you loved when I did it in episode 322 so thought I’d pick more of your hilarious icks to read out.

And then I get into Head Noise where I answer your questions – this week it’s all about heartbreak in long term relationships.

    1. How do you handle a relationship when your mind is telling you to run but your heart says otherwise? Me and my boyfriend are in our 20s and have been dating for a few years long distance.  Early on there was some lying and deception and we broke up, but I gave him a second chance as I thought he needed time to adjust from his single life to being coupled. I thought we were in a loving truthful relationship since then. But I have recently found out he has been texting 2 women. I feel it’s disrespectful, and my lack of trust from the previous lying has come back. He also follows Twitter pages with sexually explicit content. I’m a very trusting and open-minded person but I feel this relationship has made me insecure and untrusting particularly because we are long distance.
    2. Blind or Blindsided: Last night my bf of 3 years came home from work and said we needed to talk and that this wasn’t working and he didn’t love me anymore. I didn’t see this coming at all. We recently opened a business together. We regularly have sex, said I love you, planned for the future, and last week got back from a holiday together. He said he hasn’t felt a connection for some time due to my negativity and that he said he wanted kids (I’m 41 and have had ovarian failure. We’ve gone through a round of IVF together). How was he able to completely blindside me without me realising anything was up – he has gone to a new place to live so he’s clearly had time to plan this without my picking up on it.

    328. HEAD NOISE: Exes Lies Part 2, Forever Single and Thriving But Upset with Men, and Daddy Issues,

In the last Head Noise episode you guys LOVED the lies exes told so I’m bringing I back for an even more cooked part 2!

And then I get into Head Noise where I answer your questions.

    1. I'm 24, forever single, thriving and upset with men. ‘ve been single my whole life and honestly thrive. But I’m curious about what its’ like in a partnership and am open to a boyfriend but very rarely do I get genuinely excited by a guy. When I do I REALLY do. But every guy I’ve ever like has had another girl in their lives they choose over me. I feel like a second choice or someone’s back up. One guy literally said that I was his second choice once a few year ago lol. Am I doing something wrong? And How can I make it hurt less when I don’t feel chosen?
    2. My dad and I have a good relationship when he’s in a good space, but when he’s in a bad place he can be a real arsehole Recently he and I got in a fight over text, and at the next family hang out I went to say hello to him and he gave me the most awkward side hug and barely talked to me. What do I do – I want a relationship with my dad but his behaviour is really childish and hurtful.

    326. HEAD NOISE: The MANY Lies Exes Tell, Growing Apart, I Cheated on my Husband

    326. HEAD NOISE: The MANY Lies Exes Tell, Growing Apart, I Cheated on my Husband

First I have a life update about something TRULY shocking that happened to me over the weekend, and I go through your stories of things men have lied to you about!

Then I get into Head Noise where I answer your questions. In today’s episode we’ve got two really opposite topics!

    1. My husband and I are in out mid 20s and have been together since our late 20s. His family are very close with him. I have recently realised that I have always put his needs above mine – his personality has become my personality. I want to do so much more, experience the world and step outside my comfort zone. I want to put off having kids for a while and he doesn’t accept or understand it. I want change and he is so happy and content without change. We’re growing apart and I don’t know what to do.
    2. I’ve cheated on my husband with someone I had a huge connection with. We’ve ended it now as we are both married and decided we didn’t want to leave our partners for each other. Now that it is fully ended I don’t feel like I need to tell my husband as our relationship has really improved. I would just be unburdening my conscience to ruin lives, when I’ve already shut down that cheating relationship and am moving forward with my life. How do I alleviate the feelings of guilt that are clouding my moving forward.

How to avoid getting attached too quickly
It's easy to get attached to someone we've just met...because they're nice. Because they're attractive and treat us right. But how soon is too soon to get attached? Often times I'd become so fixated on one person early on, only to realize it was all smoke and mirrors. This person was not at all who I thought they were. So here's an episode talking about that experience, and how to avoid getting attached too fast. If you loved this episode, dm me on instagram @lyss or @dateyourselfinstead and share it with a friend.
