    Podcast Summary

    • Proposed legislation could impact credit card rewards, while summer camps offer growth opportunitiesProposed legislation may eliminate credit card rewards, while summer camps foster personal growth and self-discovery

Our credit card rewards could be at risk due to proposed legislation, while summer camp experiences offer children valuable opportunities for growth and self-discovery. Regarding the former, corporations like Walmart and Target are pushing for the Durban Marshall credit card bill, which could potentially end credit card rewards as we know it. On a more positive note, Y Camp at Horse Thief Reservoir provides a magical summer experience for kids, allowing them to explore, make friends, and learn new skills in Idaho's wilderness. When it comes to personal growth, it's essential to recognize and break free from limiting mindsets. To do this, one must acknowledge the belief or mindset that's holding them back, and stop assuming they have all the answers. Paying attention to negative emotions can serve as a signal to shift and address the underlying issue. Remember, feeling drained, unmotivated, or negative are indicators that it's time to examine and adjust your perspective.

    • Questioning negative emotions in the momentIdentifying and challenging negative thoughts can lead to increased self-awareness and potentially reduce their impact.

Recognizing and questioning negative emotions in the moment they arise can help us understand their root causes and potentially alleviate their impact. Using the speaker's example, even though they hated going to the gym and felt tense and out of place, they were able to identify and challenge their negative thoughts in the moment, leading to increased self-awareness and potentially reducing the overall impact of those emotions. By asking oneself what is causing the negative emotion and examining it honestly, we can gain insight into our thought patterns and work towards addressing the underlying issues.

    • Questioning our thoughts and inner dialogueRecognize and challenge negative thoughts to improve self-perception and sense of belonging

Our thoughts and inner dialogue significantly impact how we feel about ourselves and our experiences. The speaker in this conversation realized she was feeling unwelcome and judged at the gym, but upon reflection, she recognized that her negative thoughts and assumptions were contributing to these feelings. She encourages us all to question our thoughts, observe our inner dialogue, and challenge any beliefs that may be causing us distress or discomfort. By doing so, we may discover that our perceptions are not based in reality and that we belong and are accepted more than we think.

    • Challenging past beliefs of judgmentRecognize where past beliefs of judgment come from, question their validity, and let go of the fear of judgment to embrace the present.

Our beliefs and feelings of being judged or not fitting in can stem from past experiences, such as bullying. These experiences can shape our perception of the world and lead us to assume that people don't like us or will judge us. However, it's important to question the validity of these beliefs and consider if they are based on reality or just lingering thoughts from the past. Many times, these beliefs exist without any real evidence to support them. By recognizing where these beliefs come from and challenging their validity, we can learn to let go of the fear of judgment and embrace the present. It's essential to remember that our past experiences do not define our current reality and that people are generally more accepting and kind than we might assume.

    • Examining limiting beliefsQuestioning assumptions and seeking evidence can challenge limiting beliefs and improve emotional well-being.

Questioning our thought patterns and examining the evidence can help us challenge limiting beliefs and feel more accepted and comfortable in our surroundings. The speaker shares how an old belief that people didn't like her made her feel isolated and uncomfortable at the gym, but upon reflection, she realized this assumption was not based on facts. By questioning her thought process and seeking proof to the contrary, she discovered that people at the gym were actually welcoming and friendly towards her. This realization brought her significant relief and a sense of connection. So, when faced with uncomfortable feelings or limiting beliefs, consider examining the evidence and questioning your assumptions to help shift your perspective and improve your emotional well-being.

    • Finding commonalities can lead to stronger connectionsFocusing on similarities and helping others can improve emotional experiences and build stronger relationships

Focusing on our similarities and commonalities with others can help us feel more connected and accepted, rather than focusing on our differences or perceived disconnections. This simple shift in perspective can lead to a more positive emotional experience, especially in social situations that may initially cause anxiety or discomfort, such as going to the gym. By actively seeking out ways to help and interact with others, we can build stronger connections and break down perceived barriers. Additionally, becoming aware of and questioning the mindset that contributes to negative emotions is an essential step towards making a change and adopting a more positive perspective. Lastly, continuous self-education is crucial in personal growth and development.

    • The importance of continuous learningLimited understanding can lead to harmful beliefs and actions, so it's essential to continuously educate yourself to expand your knowledge.

It's important to continuously educate yourself, even about things you think you already know. I learned this lesson the hard way when I was a teenager trying to lose weight. I had started a diet and was eating very little, which led to dizziness and black spots when I stood up. My family suggested I eat sugar when I felt this way, so I did, convinced that it was the solution. However, years later, during nursing school, I learned about orthostatic hypotension and how it causes dizziness when you stand up due to a drop in blood pressure. I was shocked and angry that I had believed the sugar solution for so long. This experience taught me that having a limited understanding of a topic can lead to harmful beliefs and actions. Therefore, it's crucial to continue learning and expanding our knowledge.

    • Challenging and changing mindsets through knowledge and new perspectivesGaining knowledge and new perspectives can challenge and change our limited and inaccurate beliefs, leading to significant shifts in mindset.

Our beliefs and understanding of various phenomena can be limited and inaccurate, but gaining knowledge and new perspectives can challenge and change our mindsets. The speaker shared personal experiences with understanding the body's responses and the concept of money. In the case of the body, she learned about orthostatic hypotension and how it explains certain physical sensations, challenging her previous belief that it was due to low sugar. With money, she realized that it's an equal exchange in value, and one can offer value to receive it, debunking her belief that making money requires suffering or hard work. These new perspectives brought about significant shifts in her mindset.

    • Focus on offering valueBy focusing on providing value, you can increase your worth and attract those willing to pay for it

Providing value is the key to making money. The speaker shares her personal experience of undervaluing herself and her coaching services, but once she realized the transformative impact she had on her clients' lives, she was able to increase her prices significantly. She encourages everyone to break the mindset that making money is hard and that they have to suffer for it. Instead, focus on offering value and finding the people who are willing to pay for it. Whether it's working at a retail store or providing coaching services, everyone has the ability to offer value and should strive to find ways to offer it to those who value it most. The speaker's advice is not only for those looking to start a business but also for anyone looking to increase their worth and value in their personal and professional lives.

Dr. Sandro Formica - Living Life on Your Own Terms

Dr. Sandro Formica - Living Life on Your Own Terms

Today's guest is my wonderful friend, Dr. Sandro Formica. Sandro and I met at the World Happiness Summit, and naturally we bonded over our shared mission of spreading and legitimizing the pursuit and study of happiness and fulfillment. Sandro has taken an unconventional path in academia and life, living every day in full commitment to his Life Purpose. He lives to get others to this point, increasing individual and organizational performance based on applied, scientific evidence. He teaches "The Science of Happiness and Personal Empowerment" at Florida International University.

As you'll hear in the conversation, Sandro radiates that easygoing, wise Italian vibe. His anecdotes about his mother are both heartwarming and hilarious. He is a joy to speak with and listen to, and his insights and wisdom will lead you to take a close look at whether or not you're living the life and doing the work that your needs, values, and purpose want you to do.

    Listen as we discuss:

    • How his first thought during quarantine was: "I wish I could hug mama."
    • How the COVID-19 pandemic affected his native Italy (which at the time of recording was a disastrous situation) vs. Miami, his home.
    • The realization that out of the roughly 20,000 hours we receive of fundamental education from preschool through high school, we can barely remember 10% of it.
    • How we can measure the intangible by gauging how much our needs are being fulfilled, and the firm truth that having our needs met will lead to a basic happiness.
    • The needs not being met by the pandemic: Safety, socializing, touch.
    • The question: Why is the feeling of having your needs met based on subjective perception? Some people have it all and feel unsafe, and yet others are as vulnerable as it gets and feel safe and secure.
    • A small mention of squirrels, again, because apparently everyone thinks they're awesome.
    • How Sandro would calm someone going through a lockdown induced panic
    • How it's crucial to align your work and life plan with your values, needs, and purpose, in that order.
    • How Sandro was living life and getting a PhD in a field he didn't really care about in order to gain his mother's approval, only to realize he didn't really know himself.
    • The timeless value and curative power of vulnerability.
