#36: Find the right audience | With Rand Fishkin

    enAugust 10, 2020

    Podcast Summary

    • Reaching the right audience is key to marketing successUtilize resources like D2C Pod and HubSpot's Service Hub to connect with your target audience effectively and keep customers happy for retention and revenue growth.

In today's marketing landscape, finding and connecting with your target audience is crucial to the success of your blog, fundraiser, or marketing campaign. However, with the consolidation of media and the dominance of tech giants like Facebook and Google, it can be challenging for small and medium businesses to generate attention. Rand Fishkin, co-founder of SparkToro and previously of Moz and inbound.org, emphasizes the importance of reaching the right audience in the right places at the right time with the right message. He recommends resources like the D2C Pod, a podcast about all things direct-to-consumer, to help marketers learn from successful brands and strategies. Additionally, HubSpot's new Service Hub offers tools like an AI-powered help desk, chatbot, and customer success workspace to help businesses better connect with and keep their customers happy, ultimately leading to retention and revenue growth. By utilizing these resources and staying focused on reaching your ideal audience, you can overcome the hurdles of media consolidation and make a real impact with your marketing efforts.

    • Bystander Effect in MarketingMarketers can overcome the bystander effect by exploring alternative, creative marketing methods beyond Google and Facebook to reach their target audience effectively and cost-effectively.

Marketers often struggle to engage audiences effectively due to the bystander effect. This phenomenon, observed in the 1960s, shows that people are less likely to help or engage when they believe the situation isn't directly relevant to them. In marketing, this means audiences may not respond to messages they don't perceive as personal. The issue is compounded when using competitive channels like Google and Facebook, where many marketers vye for attention. Instead of relying solely on these platforms, consider exploring alternative, creative methods to reach your target audience. This could include podcasts, YouTube channels, websites, social media, radio shows, television programs, conferences, and events. The key is to identify publications or individuals that resonate with your audience. By expanding your marketing horizons, you may find cost-effective, high-impact opportunities that help you stand out from the competition.

    • Targeting specific audiences for greater successCompanies like Facebook and Amazon started small and focused on their niche markets. SparkToro helps businesses reach their target audience beyond Google and Facebook by providing data and intermediating relationships.

While global advertising platforms like Google and Facebook offer businesses the opportunity to reach a vast audience, focusing on specific, targeted audiences can lead to greater success. Companies like Facebook and Amazon started small and honed in on their niche markets before expanding. SparkToro, a company founded by Rand Fishkin, aims to help marketers reach their target audience beyond consolidated media like Google and Facebook. By providing data and intermediating the relationship between businesses and potential customers, SparkToro aims to create opportunities for both parties and make a positive difference in the world. A great example of this is Kettle and Fire, a consumer company that uses SparkToro's data to understand what health blogs and social accounts their customers engage with, allowing them to effectively reach their target audience.

    • Discovering audience engagement hotspots for effective marketingUsing data from tools like SparkToro, target your marketing budget to channels where your audience is most active for increased impact and recall.

Effectively targeting your audience is crucial for successful marketing campaigns. Kettle and Fire, a health food company, learned this firsthand when they used SparkToro to discover which health and fitness websites and social accounts their audience frequently engaged with. This data allowed Kettle and Fire to allocate their marketing budget intelligently, prioritizing channels where their audience was most active. This targeted approach is more effective than casting a wide net, as shown in a study by The Guardian where a journalist's recall of ads in Central London was only 1%. Additionally, Richard Shoten's research in "The Choice Factory" demonstrated that regionally targeted messaging can significantly increase the impact of an offer. By following Rand's advice and testing different types of advertising for the Nudge podcast, it's essential to remember that targeting your audience is key to cutting through the noise and ensuring your marketing efforts are not forgotten in the sea of advertisements.

    • Understanding your audience is key to successful marketingIdentify interests, thought leaders, publications, and social sources of potential customers to build functional products and increase engagement.

Targeting the right audience is crucial for successful marketing and entrepreneurship. The speaker shared their experience of struggling to get engagement despite targeting marketers in the UK through Facebook ads, but achieving almost double the engagement by advertising on a podcast platform in specific categories. James Stania, a colleague at Brandwatch, also emphasized the importance of finding the target audience for his book sales by getting it featured on Hacker News. The speaker urged entrepreneurs to "read the room" and engage with their potential market by understanding their interests, thought leaders, publications, and social sources. By doing so, entrepreneurs can build better, more functional, and more likely to succeed products. Google, Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn are some resources to start the process of understanding the target audience.

    • Targeting messages to the right audienceIdentifying key sources for target audience using SparkToro can help businesses tailor messages, engage effectively, and build a following.

Targeting your message to the right audience can help overcome the bystander effect and engage them effectively. SparkToro, a marketing tool, allows users to identify and focus on the publications, social sources, and influencers that resonate with their specific target audience. By understanding these channels, businesses can position themselves to engage more effectively with their audience. A study by Marko van Brommel further illustrates this concept. In the study, participants were less likely to engage with troubled users on an online forum when more people were present, a phenomenon known as the bystander effect. However, when there were fewer people present, participants were more likely to engage. This study highlights the importance of targeting messages to the right audience, as individuals are more likely to engage when they feel the message is intended for them. SparkToro offers a free solution for businesses looking to identify key sources for their target audience. By using this tool, businesses can gain valuable insights into their audience's interests and preferences, allowing them to tailor their messages and engage more effectively. This approach not only helps businesses build a following but also positions them to provide value to their audience from the outset.

The speech that put a man on the moon

The speech that put a man on the moon
It seems inevitable to us now that someone would eventually land on the moon. But back in 1962 that wasn’t so certain. With the ever-rising costs of the Apollo space program, and a huge amount of tax needed from each US citizen, JFK struggled to convince people. That was until one speech on a sunny day in September. This speech went down in history, persuading the nation to reach for the moon. In today’s Nudge, I explain the psychological tactics Kennedy used to make that speech so compelling.
