    Podcast Summary

    • Moving on from the pastAcknowledging and dealing with emotional attachments to things and people from the past is crucial for personal growth and moving forward.

Letting go of the past, whether it's possessions or past relationships, can be challenging. The speaker shared her experience of trying to declutter her belongings and her emotional attachment to stuffed toys from her childhood. She also reflected on her past habit of writing lengthy letters to her cousin, revealing her destined passion for writing. The episode is about moving on from breakups, and the speaker received numerous requests for advice on how to stop missing an ex. The discussion may continue in a future episode as there seems to be a lot to cover on the topic. The speaker's personal stories highlight the importance of acknowledging and dealing with our emotional attachments to things and people from the past to move forward.

    • The importance of investing time and energy into meaningful connectionsInvest time and energy into meaningful relationships, whether through daily interactions, handwritten letters, or shared pursuits, to build and maintain strong connections.

Meaningful connections require effort and investment. The speaker shares how her close relationship with her cousin was maintained through daily interactions growing up, but the move to different states made them realize the importance of putting in time and energy for one person. She laments how technology and accessibility have changed the way we connect, making it easier to be disposable in relationships. The speaker also reflects on the significance of handwritten letters and the impact they can have, encouraging the practice even in today's digital age. Additionally, the speaker shares how she and her cousin started a business at a young age, which required dedication and creativity, further emphasizing the importance of investing time and effort into meaningful pursuits. Overall, the speaker encourages listeners to prioritize meaningful connections and invest time and energy into them, no matter the generation or time period.

    • Understanding Confirmation Bias and Protection ModeConfirmation bias makes us focus on positive memories and believe in past relationships, while protection mode makes us hesitant to leave toxic relationships and try new things.

Our brains have a tendency to focus on positive memories and confirm our beliefs, leading us to miss past relationships and feel an irrational desire to go back. This phenomenon is known as confirmation bias. Additionally, our brains go into protection mode when faced with the unknown, making it easier to fall back into old patterns or toxic relationships rather than taking a leap forward and growing as individuals. Understanding these psychological processes can help us make informed decisions about whether to move on or give a relationship another chance.

    • Glorifying the past can lead to hurt and disappointmentInstead of focusing on past relationships, prioritize healing and personal growth for healthier future relationships

Our brains are wired to seek comfort and safety, often tempting us to regress back to past relationships instead of moving forward and growing. This is especially true when we're feeling uncertain or bored with our current situation. However, glorifying the past and bringing an ex back into our lives can ultimately lead to hurt and disappointment for both parties. Instead, it's important to focus on healing ourselves and considering the impact of our actions on our exes. This complex process of growth and self-improvement can be challenging, but ultimately leads to personal development and healthier relationships in the future.

    • Understanding and dealing with guilt after a breakupDon't let guilt hinder your or their recovery. If they're manipulating, cut ties. Don't be their support network, it hinders their progress.

When coping with guilt after ending a relationship, it's important to understand that the other person will eventually move on and their happiness is not solely in your hands. There are two types of guilt: feeling guilty for their sadness and feeling guilty for their manipulative tactics. If they're using manipulation, it's crucial to completely sever ties with them to allow them to genuinely recover. Don't be their support network, as it only gives them false hope and hinders their recovery journey. Remember, being the "asshole" and ripping off the band-aid is a kinder gesture in the long run. Personal examples, like sending Bali flight emails, can be manipulative attempts to soothe their own guilt and should be avoided.

    • Focusing on ex's new relationship may hinder healing processCut ties, give space, establish boundaries, and prioritize self-improvement for emotional healing after a breakup.

Focusing on being kind and charitable to an ex, or obsessing over their new relationship, may not always be helpful. If you genuinely care about your ex's well-being, it's important to cut ties and give them space to move on. Comparing yourself to their new partner and feeling jealous stems from self-love issues. Creating distance and focusing on self-improvement can help in the healing process. If you find yourself constantly seeking information about your ex or comparing yourself to their new partner, it's essential to establish boundaries and prioritize your own emotional health.

    • Moving on from an ex: Prioritize emotional healthFind supportive friends, be aware of emotional risks of sex with an ex, and consider listening to podcasts on jealousy and comparison to aid healing process

When trying to move on from an ex, it's important to prioritize your emotional health. If your friends are not supportive, it may be necessary to find new ones. Sex with an ex can be particularly complicated due to the release of bonding chemicals like oxytocin. It's crucial to be aware of the potential emotional risks and consider the impact on your healing process. Remember, every situation is unique, and it's essential to find what works best for you. For more guidance, consider listening to podcasts on jealousy and comparison to help manage these feelings.

    • Respecting feelings during a breakupFocus on healing, moving forward, and building new connections, rather than clinging to the past or hindering personal growth with the belief in one true love.

During a breakup, it's essential to respect the feelings and wishes of both parties. Engaging in sexual activities or maintaining close relationships with an ex's family can hinder the healing process for one person more than the other. It's crucial to focus on moving forward and finding new connections rather than clinging to the past. Additionally, believing that there is only one true love in life can hinder personal growth and happiness. Instead, embrace the possibility of multiple loves and focus on building a strong relationship with oneself.

    • Putting your ex on a pedestalHumanize your ex by reminding yourself of their flaws and focusing on the good and the bad aspects of the relationship to bring them down from the pedestal and open yourself up to finding happiness with someone new.

After a breakup, it's normal to feel sad and to miss your ex. However, if these feelings persist for a prolonged period of time, it may be a sign that you've put your ex on a pedestal and are telling yourself that no one can match them. This mindset can prevent you from moving on and finding happiness with someone new. To overcome this, try to humanize your ex by reminding yourself of their flaws and focusing on the good and the bad aspects of the relationship. By doing so, you'll be able to bring them down from the pedestal and open yourself up to the possibility of finding happiness with someone new. Remember, everyone has flaws and no one is perfect, including your ex.

    • Examining deep-rooted desires behind drunk textingConsider underlying reasons for texting exes while drunk, establish boundaries, and assess relationship with alcohol if needed.

Drunk texting an ex is a reflection of deep-rooted desires, not an impulsive action driven by alcohol. If you find yourself texting your ex while under the influence, it's essential to examine your behaviors throughout the day and consider the underlying reasons for your urge to contact them. Creating boundaries and setting clear communication can help make it more challenging to reach out, making drunk texting less tempting. If you genuinely have no self-control while drunk, it might be necessary to reconsider your relationship with alcohol or take accountability for your actions. Additionally, be aware that past experiences, such as venting about an ex to a friend, can impact current relationships.

    • Staying focused on an ex's post-breakup actions is unproductiveInstead of dwelling on an ex's post-breakup relationships or actions, focus on your own healing and growth.

Focusing on an ex's actions and relationships after a breakup is none of your business. People stay in relationships for various reasons, even if they're not ideal or healthy. Your ex might have shared negative experiences with you, but there could be positive aspects you're unaware of. It's essential to give yourself space and focus on your own healing and growth. If an ex wants to be friends, it's crucial to establish clear boundaries and take time for yourself before considering the friendship. Remember, true friends respect your need for space and time to heal.

    • Recognize and respect emotional boundaries in relationshipsValue your emotional needs, friends respect boundaries, and make decisive actions in relationships

It's important to recognize and value your own emotional needs and boundaries in relationships. A true friend will respect your space and time, and not manipulate or guilt trip you into giving attention when you're not able to. If someone consistently disregards your boundaries, they may not be a healthy presence in your life. Additionally, in difficult circumstances such as long-distance relationships, it's essential to make decisive actions instead of avoiding reality. You have the power to implement change and choose the best option for yourself, whether it's continuing a long-distance relationship, moving to be with your partner, or ending the relationship altogether. Remember, don't wait for change to come to you – be proactive and make the change happen.

    • Assessing the Aftermath of a BreakupReflect on the relationship, ask probing questions, identify toxic traits, learn from past experiences, and prevent repeating mistakes. Examine the accuracy of one's narrative, acknowledge personal shortcomings, recognize growth opportunities, identify toxic behaviors, assess external factors, and evaluate motivation for closure.

When dealing with the aftermath of a breakup, it's essential to reflect on the relationship and ask oneself probing questions to facilitate growth and move forward. The speaker offers eight questions to help listeners assess their role in the relationship, identify toxic traits, learn from past experiences, and prevent repeating the same mistakes. These questions include examining the accuracy of one's relationship narrative, acknowledging personal shortcomings, recognizing growth opportunities, identifying toxic behaviors, assessing the role of external factors, and evaluating the motivation for seeking closure. By engaging in this introspective process, individuals can gain valuable insights and develop the resilience needed to heal and thrive after a breakup. Remember, it's crucial to be kind to oneself during this process and not take unnecessary criticism or negativity from others or oneself.

    BRAIN FACT:
Central Sensitization and chronic pain: the phenomena when there is an enhancement in the function of the neurons and the circuits that are involved in nociceptive pathways causing an echo or remembered pain. It happens because of an increase in membrane excitability and synaptic efficacy. It’s a great example for how neuroplasticity works in a negative way and has been linked to chronic pain.

    330. HEAD NOISE: The Ick List, Blind or Blindsided and Should I Stay or Should I Go?

    330. HEAD NOISE: The Ick List, Blind or Blindsided and Should I Stay or Should I Go?

First up I’m going through your ICKS – you loved when I did it in episode 322 so thought I’d pick more of your hilarious icks to read out.

And then I get into Head Noise where I answer your questions – this week it’s all about heartbreak in long term relationships.

    1. How do you handle a relationship when your mind is telling you to run but your heart says otherwise? Me and my boyfriend are in our 20s and have been dating for a few years long distance.  Early on there was some lying and deception and we broke up, but I gave him a second chance as I thought he needed time to adjust from his single life to being coupled. I thought we were in a loving truthful relationship since then. But I have recently found out he has been texting 2 women. I feel it’s disrespectful, and my lack of trust from the previous lying has come back. He also follows Twitter pages with sexually explicit content. I’m a very trusting and open-minded person but I feel this relationship has made me insecure and untrusting particularly because we are long distance.
    2. Blind or Blindsided: Last night my bf of 3 years came home from work and said we needed to talk and that this wasn’t working and he didn’t love me anymore. I didn’t see this coming at all. We recently opened a business together. We regularly have sex, said I love you, planned for the future, and last week got back from a holiday together. He said he hasn’t felt a connection for some time due to my negativity and that he said he wanted kids (I’m 41 and have had ovarian failure. We’ve gone through a round of IVF together). How was he able to completely blindside me without me realising anything was up – he has gone to a new place to live so he’s clearly had time to plan this without my picking up on it.

    328. HEAD NOISE: Exes Lies Part 2, Forever Single and Thriving But Upset with Men, and Daddy Issues,

In the last Head Noise episode you guys LOVED the lies exes told so I’m bringing I back for an even more cooked part 2!

And then I get into Head Noise where I answer your questions.

    1. I'm 24, forever single, thriving and upset with men. ‘ve been single my whole life and honestly thrive. But I’m curious about what its’ like in a partnership and am open to a boyfriend but very rarely do I get genuinely excited by a guy. When I do I REALLY do. But every guy I’ve ever like has had another girl in their lives they choose over me. I feel like a second choice or someone’s back up. One guy literally said that I was his second choice once a few year ago lol. Am I doing something wrong? And How can I make it hurt less when I don’t feel chosen?
    2. My dad and I have a good relationship when he’s in a good space, but when he’s in a bad place he can be a real arsehole Recently he and I got in a fight over text, and at the next family hang out I went to say hello to him and he gave me the most awkward side hug and barely talked to me. What do I do – I want a relationship with my dad but his behaviour is really childish and hurtful.

    326. HEAD NOISE: The MANY Lies Exes Tell, Growing Apart, I Cheated on my Husband

    326. HEAD NOISE: The MANY Lies Exes Tell, Growing Apart, I Cheated on my Husband

First I have a life update about something TRULY shocking that happened to me over the weekend, and I go through your stories of things men have lied to you about!

Then I get into Head Noise where I answer your questions. In today’s episode we’ve got two really opposite topics!

    1. My husband and I are in out mid 20s and have been together since our late 20s. His family are very close with him. I have recently realised that I have always put his needs above mine – his personality has become my personality. I want to do so much more, experience the world and step outside my comfort zone. I want to put off having kids for a while and he doesn’t accept or understand it. I want change and he is so happy and content without change. We’re growing apart and I don’t know what to do.
    2. I’ve cheated on my husband with someone I had a huge connection with. We’ve ended it now as we are both married and decided we didn’t want to leave our partners for each other. Now that it is fully ended I don’t feel like I need to tell my husband as our relationship has really improved. I would just be unburdening my conscience to ruin lives, when I’ve already shut down that cheating relationship and am moving forward with my life. How do I alleviate the feelings of guilt that are clouding my moving forward.

    Wisdom Wednesday: Respectful Boundaries

    Wisdom Wednesday: Respectful Boundaries

A boundary is when we say ‘no.’ It might be ‘no’ to your toddler playing in the street or a ‘no’ to an unhealthy relationship. Some people have ‘no’ down really well. Others really struggle with it. But very few have the ‘no’ down with room for feelings and respect. This is an essential part of healthy relationships and boundaries are a critical part of healing relationships. I’m Rebecca Thompson Hitt and this is the All Relationships Can Heal podcast. Today is Wisdom Wednesday and we’re talking about Respectful Boundaries.
