    52: Let's Go Clothes Shopping

    enDecember 02, 2019

    Podcast Summary

    • Shopping for new clothes pushes hosts out of comfort zonesCelebrating progress and investing in oneself can lead to exciting new experiences, such as shopping for new clothes with a personal stylist.

Stepping out of comfort zones and making changes, whether it's related to weight loss or personal style, can lead to exciting new experiences. The hosts of the Slimming World Podcast recently did just that by treating themselves to a shopping trip and hiring a personal stylist. This decision came after they had made significant progress in their weight loss journey and wanted to celebrate by investing in new outfits. For one of the hosts, the need for a new wardrobe was especially urgent as she had been nominated for an award and wanted to look her best. The experience of shopping with a personal stylist pushed them both out of their comfort zones and resulted in purchases they may not have made otherwise. The hosts also reflected on an article they had read that suggested people often don't buy new clothes when they lose weight because it keeps them trapped in their weight loss journey, rather than allowing them to fully embrace their new selves. Overall, the experience of shopping for new clothes served as a reminder to celebrate progress and invest in oneself.

    • Buying new clothes as a reward can hinder body positivityFocus on internal progress and celebrate small victories, not new clothes for self-validation.

Focusing too much on buying new clothes as a reward for reaching a certain weight can actually hinder the journey towards body positivity and self-acceptance. Constantly wearing ill-fitting clothes can lead to feelings of inadequacy and self-torture, instead of contributing to a sense of accomplishment. The speaker shared an example of accumulating excessive amounts of pajamas as a coping mechanism for feeling better about herself, which eventually turned into a shopping habit. It's essential to recognize that this behavior can compound the struggle to find peace with one's body. Instead, it's crucial to focus on the internal progress and celebrate small victories along the way, rather than relying on external factors like new clothes to validate our worth. Charity shops and sales can be helpful resources for those transitioning through different sizes, but the ultimate goal should be to cultivate a healthy relationship with our bodies and wardrobes.

    • The emotional and practical aspects of shopping for clothes and undergarmentsDiscovering correct bra sizes and shopping at charity shops can boost confidence and save money, while body dysmorphia and incorrect undergarments can negatively impact self-perception.

Body image and self-confidence play a significant role in our shopping experiences. Jem shared her struggle with body dysmorphia and the fear of buying new clothes, while Sue suggested shopping at charity shops to save money. They also discussed the importance of having a variety of knickers for different situations. Anna and the speaker discovered they had been wearing incorrect bra sizes for years, leading to excitement about getting properly fitted. Overall, the conversation highlighted the emotional and practical aspects of shopping for clothes and undergarments, and the impact it can have on our confidence and self-perception.

    • Discovering the importance of proper bra fittingWearing a correctly-sized bra provides comfort, support, and an improved appearance. Regularly get fitted to account for weight changes or aging.

Proper bra fitting is essential for comfort and support. The women in the conversation discovered they had been wearing the wrong sizes for a long time, leading to discomfort and improper support. They learned that the back of the bra should be lower down, around the ribs, and not near the neck. Proper fitting not only makes a difference in comfort but also in appearance. The conversation also touched upon the importance of having a bra fitting at least once a year, as weight loss or gain, or simply aging, can affect bra size. The women were surprised to find that everyone wears the wrong bra size and that it's a common issue.

    • Misconceptions about bra sizes lead to ill-fitting brasProper measurement and fitting are crucial for comfort and confidence, as bras not only support but also act as a barrier between body and clothes.

Our perceptions about body measurements, particularly bra sizes, can be inaccurate. Most people assume they're larger in the band and smaller in the cup, leading to ill-fitting bras. During a bra fitting session, two individuals discovered significant size differences from their initial assumptions, revealing the importance of proper measurement and fitting. Bras not only serve to support and shape, but also act as a barrier between the body and clothes, enhancing comfort and confidence. Through this experience, they learned the significance of considering the overall fit and appearance of clothing, leading to a renewed appreciation for proper sizing and the impact it has on one's wardrobe and self-image.

    • Friends discover joy in shopping for smaller sizes after weight lossAfter significant weight loss, it's essential to re-evaluate body shape and wardrobe to find clothes that fit and boost confidence

Individuals who have undergone significant weight loss often forget their new dress sizes and struggle to adjust their wardrobes accordingly. During a shopping trip, two friends excitedly try on various clothes, reminiscing about their past sizes and marveling at their progress. They discover that they can now fit into smaller sizes and are thrilled to find stylish and flattering options. This experience highlights the importance of re-evaluating one's body shape and wardrobe after weight loss, as forgetting one's new size can lead to frustration and misconceptions about one's current fit. The friends' shared journey underscores the idea that weight loss is not just about reaching a goal number on the scale, but also about embracing the new body and discovering the joy of finding clothes that make one feel confident and beautiful.

    • The joy of finding clothes that fitUnderstanding your body shape and investing in versatile, high-quality clothing can lead to feeling great and confident

Body shapes are unique, and finding clothing that flatters and fits properly can be a transformative experience. The woman in the conversation described her body shape as having a broad shoulder area and narrowing down to a small waist with no hips. She shared her struggle with finding clothes that fit her top and bottom halves differently and the joy of finding a dress that fits her shoulders and adjusts at the waist. Animal print and sparkle were identified as fashion trends for the season, and sustainability was emphasized as a priority, suggesting investing in high-quality, versatile pieces. The conversation underscores the importance of self-acceptance and the power of finding clothing that makes one feel good about themselves.

    • Tips for dressing to flatter your body shapeExperiment with layering, choose the right jacket length, and make small adjustments to enhance your best features.

Dressing to flatter your body shape involves making your clothes work for you. This can be achieved by layering different pieces, such as a blazer or a jacket, and dressing up or down an outfit with trainers or boots. Another important tip is to step into dresses instead of struggling to put them over your head, and finish your sleeves at your elbow to draw attention to your waist. Additionally, keeping your jacket sleeve up with a hair bobble on the outside creates a more streamlined look. These small adjustments can make a big difference in how your clothes fit and accentuate your best features. Overall, the key is to experiment with different styles and find what works best for your unique body shape.

    • Enhance shopping journey with a stylist during weight lossSeek out a personal shopping experience with a stylist for valuable insights and recommendations during weight loss to boost confidence and feel good about oneself.

Finding a personal shopping experience with a stylist can significantly enhance the shopping journey for individuals, especially those in the process of weight loss. The stylist can provide valuable insights and recommendations, helping to find pieces that fit well and make the wearer feel good about themselves. This can be especially important during a weight loss journey when body shape is changing. The speakers in the discussion shared their own experiences of trying various styles and finding success with a blue velvet dress and a personal shopping experience. They encouraged listeners to seek out such experiences, emphasizing the importance of feeling good about oneself before leaving the house. If you're not at the end of your weight loss journey but looking to boost your confidence through your wardrobe, consider finding a stylist to help guide you. Remember, feeling good about yourself is an important step towards reaching your goals.

In today's episode, I welcome Judi Craddock, the Body Confidence Coach, onto the show. Judi helps women to stop chasing the perfect body and embrace the one they're in now. In the episode we talked about:

    • Judi's struggle around body image and confidence, which started when she was 7 years old

    • What body confidence means

    • Why mums feel so much pressure to return to their pre-pregnancy body

    • Why getting past body image issues can change the experience of motherhood

    • Why role modelling is so important for our children, especially our daughters

Judi ends with two great tips for building body confidence straight away:

    1. Start a gratitude practice - appreciate the everyday things your body does for you and notice how your body feels when you hug your child or lie in a bubble bath.

    2. Create a body-safe environment - become aware of your media consumption and how it affects the way you perceive yourself and your body. Think about who you spend your time with and what sort of conversations you have with them, and how that informs the way you think about your body.

This was one of those episodes that I think should be compulsory listening for all new mums because Judi came across as such a compassionate person on a mission to break the vicious cycle around body image that can often start in childhood. If you've ever had any doubts or worries about the way you look during pregnancy or after  giving birth, this is the one for you.

But in the kindest sends of the word I have been around the block when it comes to struggling with food and body confidence.

Like so many women, I have a history of dieting, binge eating, and hating my body.

Family-sized tubs of ice-cream, salt and vinegar chips and liquorice all sorts were my hidden shame.

It wasn't until she stopped dieting and acknowledged some of the 'stuff' in my head with hypnotherapy that my relationship with food and body changed.

Hypnotherapy had such tremendous echo in ever part of her life, that she left the corporate world and now spends her days helping women feel comfortable .

In this podcast show host Yvette Le Blowitz - Author of It Starts With Me founder of #SPAITGIRL an online spa, self care, travel blog community also open's up about her own struggles with her body, body image issues and how even as an online spa travel blogger, travel presenter how she has to take her own self hate thoughts on as it's easy to get caught up comparing yourself when using social media especially Instagram as she has personally experienced blogging when it had nothing to do with modelling to now it is more about modelling thanks to apps like instagram.
