963: Charles Duhigg | Unlocking the Secret Language of Connection

    en-usMarch 12, 2024

    Podcast Summary

    • Looping for Understanding: Ask Questions, Repeat Back, and Show Genuine InterestEffective communication involves actively listening, building rapport, and demonstrating understanding through questioning, repeating back, and expressing genuine interest. Becoming a super communicator is a learnable skill that can significantly improve relationships and make a positive impact.

Effective communication is about actively listening and demonstrating understanding. By asking questions, repeating back what we've heard, and showing genuine interest, we can build rapport and create a desire for the other person to do the same. This simple habit, known as "looping for understanding," can significantly improve our communication skills and help us connect with others more deeply. Charles Duhigg, a brilliant thinker and communicator, discusses this concept and many others in his book "Supercommunicators." He explains that becoming a super communicator is a learnable skill, and that anyone can develop the ability to connect with people more effectively. By understanding the different types of conversations and the skills required for each, we can improve our communication in various situations. Additionally, emotional contagion, vulnerability, and the concept of stereotype threat are just a few of the fascinating topics covered in this conversation. Overall, the key takeaway is that effective communication is a powerful tool for building relationships and making a positive impact on those around us.

    • Learning Communication Skills for Effective ConnectionRegardless of personality type, effective communication is a learnable skill that can be used to connect with others when needed. Authenticity and honesty are powerful tools for building relationships.

Effective communication is a skill that can be learned and used when desired, regardless of personality type. The story of Jim Lawler, a CIA officer who struggled with recruiting spies, illustrates this concept. Despite his initial failure and exhaustion, he learned that being authentic and honest were tools he could use to connect with people when needed. Similarly, the creation of the sitcom "The Big Bang Theory" involved the writers going through multiple drafts until they found the solution to making the characters share emotions effectively. These examples demonstrate that life often requires us to adapt and use various tools, including communication skills, to achieve our goals. It's essential to remember that learning these skills does not mean we are obligated to use them all the time or with everyone. Instead, they provide us with the ability to connect when it matters most.

    • Effective communication goes beyond wordsUnderstanding nonverbal cues and responding appropriately enhances communication, making it feel effortless.

Effective communication goes beyond just the words spoken and encompasses energy, mood, and nonverbal cues. Friends used exaggerated expressions and long pauses to convey emotions, while The Big Bang Theory relied on subtle gestures and tone. Our brains quickly pick up on these cues to understand connections or disconnections between people. Miscommunications can be exhausting when people are not on the same wavelength, and researchers suggest that every discussion consists of practical, emotional, and social conversations. Matching the conversation type and responding appropriately can make communication feel effortless.

    • Understanding communication styles for deeper connectionsEffective communication requires recognizing and respecting emotional, practical, and social needs to build stronger relationships and foster productive conversations. Misalignment can lead to misunderstandings and frustration. Listen actively and empathetically to connect and engage.

Effective communication involves matching the type of conversation based on emotional, practical, or social needs. This alignment allows our brains to become "neurally entrained," creating a deeper connection and understanding. Misalignment, like trying to solve a problem while someone is venting, can lead to misunderstandings and frustration. By recognizing and respecting each other's communication styles, we can build stronger relationships and foster more productive conversations. This concept, known as the "matching principle," is crucial in various settings, including personal relationships and professional environments. It's essential to listen actively and empathetically to truly connect and engage with others.

    • Ask deep questions to build stronger connectionsAsking deep questions can help reveal the true nature of conversations, build stronger connections, resolve conflicts, and create opportunities for growth. Be aware of different communication patterns and use 'looping for understanding' to ensure effective listening.

Effective communication involves asking deep questions to understand the values, beliefs, and experiences of others. These questions can help reveal the true nature of a conversation and allow for a more meaningful exchange. By asking deep questions, we can build stronger connections, resolve conflicts, and create opportunities for growth. It's important to remember that our brains are programmed to communicate in different ways, and being aware of these patterns can help us navigate conversations more effectively. Additionally, the technique of "looping for understanding" can be a powerful tool in ensuring that we are truly listening to others by asking questions, repeating back what we've heard, and asking for confirmation. By prioritizing deep listening and understanding, we can foster more productive and fulfilling conversations.

    • Authentic listening and responding create meaningful connectionsEffective communication relies on genuine listening and responding, using looping questions, active listening, and reciprocal authenticity, and avoiding mimicry for stronger connections

Effective communication relies on authentic listening and responding. When we genuinely listen to each other and show understanding, we create a connection that makes both parties feel valued. The use of looping questions, active listening, and reciprocal authenticity are essential habits for fostering meaningful conversations. Matching is an important aspect of authentic listening, but it's not the same as mimicry. Matching involves understanding and responding to someone's emotions and experiences, while mimicry is an inauthentic attempt to copy someone's behavior. Our brains are finely tuned to detect inauthenticity, making mimicry an ineffective communication strategy. Effective communication requires vulnerability and authenticity. It's important to be true to ourselves and avoid trying to mimic others just to fit in. Instead, we should focus on engaging in reciprocal authenticity by responding with empathy, asking thoughtful questions, and sharing meaningful experiences. In summary, authentic listening and responding are crucial for effective communication. By developing the habit of active listening and using matching appropriately, we can create meaningful connections with others.

    • Effective communication is crucial for successPractice effective communication skills to build stronger relationships and communities, and improve personal and professional success

Effective communication is a crucial skill for success, both personally and professionally. Our brains have evolved to excel at communication, making it a powerful tool for building relationships and communities. However, not everyone naturally possesses strong communication skills. Some people may need to learn and practice these skills to improve. The CIA agent in the story serves as an example of someone who, despite being in a high-pressure communication role, was not effective at it. Those who believe they are already great communicators may be the ones who need to learn the most. By understanding the principles of effective communication and putting them into practice, we can all become better communicators and build stronger connections with others. This not only benefits our personal relationships but also our professional success.

    • Prepare for conversations to reduce anxiety and make them successfulPreparing thoughtful questions or topics before conversations can reduce anxiety, make interactions easier, and improve outcomes

Preparing for conversations, whether they're with strangers or friends, can significantly reduce anxiety and make the interaction easier and more successful. By having a few thoughtful questions or topics in mind, you can fill silences and keep the conversation flowing. This simple preparation can help you feel more confident and make the other person feel valued. This strategy, as proven in a Harvard Business School study, can be applied to various conversations and can even be used to make asking for something, like inviting someone on a vacation, less awkward. So, before your next conversation, take a moment to consider what you'd like to discuss or ask, and you may find that the conversation goes more smoothly than you expected.

    • Neural entrainment: The unique human ability to connect deeply through words and emotionsHumans have a unique ability for neural entrainment, allowing us to deeply connect with each other through words and emotions, setting us apart from other animals.

Humans have a unique ability for neural entrainment or speaker-listener neural coupling, which sets us apart from other animals. This capacity allows us to connect deeply with each other through words and emotions. We can make others feel happy, sad, or any emotion by sharing stories or experiences. Even laughter, a non-linguistic form of communication, can be used to signal a desire to connect. NASA has even used this understanding to identify emotionally intelligent candidates by observing their reactions to certain situations. This remarkable ability has played a significant role in the evolution of human communication and social connections. Animals can communicate and even mimic human emotions to some extent, but the depth and complexity of human neural entrainment is what sets us apart. It's fascinating to consider the implications of this ability in various aspects of our lives, from everyday conversations to comedy and even job interviews.

    • Authenticity and Connection: Essential Elements in Fostering Meaningful RelationshipsAuthenticity saves energy and fosters deeper connections, but constant self-monitoring and control can be detrimental. Shared experiences and laughter create a sense of belonging and connection.

Authenticity and connection are crucial in various aspects of life, including relationships and communication. The speaker shared an experience of identifying a colleague's dishonesty based on her intuition and body language. Authenticity requires less energy and effort than maintaining a lie. However, constant self-monitoring and the urge for control can be detrimental in relationships. Instead, finding things to control together can create a stronger connection. The speaker also touched upon the importance of shared experiences and the power of laughter in creating a sense of belonging and connection. The feeling of being out of sync with others during shared experiences, such as laughing at different things, can lead to feelings of alienation and vulnerability. Ultimately, authenticity, control, and shared experiences are essential elements in fostering meaningful connections with others.

    • Understanding the Power of Mirroring in CommunicationOur brains naturally adapt communication styles to build deeper connections, fostering engagement and understanding.

Our brains are wired to crave connection with others and we unconsciously adapt our communication styles to match those around us in order to build and strengthen relationships. This phenomenon, known as mirroring or matching, can occur in various social situations, from comedy shows to political rallies. It's not about mimicry, but rather an authentic and natural response to form connections. This constant adjustment of communication styles helps prove to others that we're listening and understanding them, fostering a deeper sense of connection and engagement. Even if we're not consciously aware of it, our brains are designed to do this. It's important to remember that this doesn't mean we should deliberately put on accents or adopt fake communication styles. Instead, it highlights our innate ability to communicate effectively and build meaningful connections with others.

    • Prepare and be self-aware for effective communicationPreparing for conversations and acknowledging emotions can reduce conflict and improve productivity. Self-awareness helps us understand others' needs.

Preparation and self-awareness are key to effective communication. The way we speak and behave can vary depending on our surroundings and the people we're with, but it's important to distinguish between what feels natural and what feels forced. Preparing for conversations, even if it's just writing down our goals beforehand, can significantly reduce conflict and make conversations more productive. Additionally, acknowledging the potential awkwardness or sensitivity of certain topics can help create a more open and honest dialogue. By understanding our own intentions and emotions, we become more attuned to the needs and emotions of others, allowing us to navigate conversations more effectively.

    • Understanding conversation typesEffective communication involves recognizing emotional, social, and practical conversations and tailoring responses accordingly to build deeper connections

Effective communication involves understanding the type of conversation happening in the moment. By paying close attention to the words and tone used by the speaker, we can determine if the conversation is emotional, social, or practical. This knowledge allows us to respond appropriately and build a deeper connection with the person we're communicating with. For example, if someone is sharing a story, it often reflects an emotional or social mindset. In contrast, a practical conversation may involve discussing facts and data. By recognizing the type of conversation, we can tailor our responses and ask open-ended questions to better understand the other person's perspective. Moreover, effective communication is about showing that we want to connect with the other person. When we ask questions and respond with empathy, we demonstrate that we value their thoughts and feelings. This approach builds trust and fosters stronger relationships. In summary, by actively listening and understanding the type of conversation, we can communicate more effectively and build deeper connections with others.

    • Practicing active listening and reciprocal vulnerability in relationshipsEffective communication involves acknowledging and understanding others, sharing authentic moments, and asking open-ended questions to build deeper connections and trust.

Effective communication in relationships involves active listening and reciprocal vulnerability. Active listening means acknowledging and understanding what the other person is saying, even if you haven't had the same experience. Reciprocal vulnerability means sharing authentic and vulnerable moments with each other, which can help build trust and intimacy. By asking open-ended questions and engaging in reciprocal vulnerability, we can trigger emotions in others and create a deeper connection. This can lead to feelings of closeness and even falling in love, as demonstrated in studies like the Fast Friends Procedure. So, in summary, by practicing active listening and reciprocal vulnerability, we can strengthen our relationships and build deeper connections with others.

    • Asking Meaningful Questions and Paying Attention to Nonverbal CuesEffective communication involves asking thoughtful questions and observing nonverbal cues for deeper understanding. Try less intense alternatives for meaningful conversations and create a welcoming environment for new connections.

Effective communication involves asking meaningful questions and paying attention to nonverbal cues. While deep questions can be intimidating, there are less intense alternatives that can still lead to meaningful conversations. For example, asking about the best and worst moments of the last year is a good alternative to asking about crying experiences. It's also important to remember that not every conversation needs to be deep or lengthy. Sometimes, people may not want to engage in a conversation, and that's okay. Nonverbal cues can help us understand how someone is feeling and whether they're interested in the conversation. The best communicators approach conversations as a series of experiments, and they're open to adjusting their approach based on the other person's reactions. Additionally, creating a welcoming environment in your home, such as turning it into an Airbnb, can lead to new connections and adventures.

    • Experimenting with conversation styles and social dynamicsBeing aware of social cues and adaptable in communication situations is crucial for effective communication. Charles Duhigg's research highlights the importance of acknowledging all identities to avoid stereotype threat and shift conversation directions.

Effective communication involves experimenting with different conversation styles and being aware of the social dynamics at play. Charles Duhigg shared insights from his research on how people unconsciously try different approaches to initiate conversations and shift the conversation's direction. He also discussed the concept of stereotype threat and how it can impact individuals' performance, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging all identities in conversations. Overall, the conversation underscored the significance of being attentive to social cues and adaptable in communication situations.

    • Acknowledging diversity of identitiesRecognizing and validating multiple identities can reduce stereotype threat and improve outcomes in conversations.

Recognizing and acknowledging the diversity of identities in a conversation can help erase stereotype threat and improve outcomes. This was highlighted in a study where bringing up multiple identities of individuals, instead of focusing on a single stereotype, led to better performance and reduced anxiety. For instance, a person's identity as a parent, volunteer firefighter, doctor, or student, among others, can influence their perspective and make them feel valued. Stereotype threat occurs when individuals internalize negative stereotypes about their group, leading to anxiety and poor performance. By acknowledging and validating the complexity of individuals' identities, we can help reduce the impact of stereotype threat and foster more inclusive and effective conversations.

    • Effective communication rules for online vs in-personUnderstand unique rules of each channel for effective communication. Adapt style for text, email, video conferencing, and face-to-face conversations.

Effective communication, whether in person or online, requires an understanding of the unique rules and requirements of each channel. Dr. Atul Gawande emphasized the importance of motivational interviewing in face-to-face conversations, where understanding different perspectives can lead to productive dialogue. However, online communication presents its own challenges, as different platforms like text, email, and video conferencing each have distinct norms. For instance, online conversations can benefit from simple politeness and avoiding sarcasm, which may not translate well. Additionally, recognizing the limitations of certain platforms, such as the lack of nonverbal cues in text messaging, can help us adapt our communication style accordingly. By being mindful of these differences and adjusting our approach, we can foster more meaningful and productive conversations, whether online or in person.

    • Misinterpretations in digital communication due to lack of nonverbal cuesAcknowledge and communicate openly about what's being focused on during digital calls to reduce misunderstandings and ensure everyone stays engaged.

Effective communication in digital formats like Zoom calls requires conscious effort and awareness due to the lack of nonverbal cues. The speaker's gaze towards a production screen or other distractions can be misinterpreted, leading to misunderstandings. To mitigate this, it's essential to communicate openly about what's being focused on, giving everyone permission to look away from the camera when necessary. This acknowledgement helps reduce anxiety and ensures everyone remains engaged in the conversation. While it may feel unnatural at first, this approach will become second nature with time. Ultimately, we must adapt to the new communication modes and understand that our brains will not evolve to see what others are seeing in real-time.

    • Using elicitation techniques to create a psychological environment for effective communicationElicitation techniques encourage people to reveal information by creating a rapport-building environment through presumptive statements, shared goals, exploring feelings, and considering identity importance. Drew Karpyshyn's book 'Characters: Crafting a Compelling Story' offers practical insights.

Effective communication involves using elicitation techniques to create a psychological environment that encourages people to reveal information they might not otherwise share. These techniques don't rely on direct questioning but rather on presumptive statements that elicit a response. By understanding the conversation dynamics, sharing goals, exploring feelings, and considering identity importance, you can build rapport and extract valuable information. The book "Characters: Crafting a Compelling Story" by Drew Karpyshyn provides a deeper exploration of these concepts. It's a comprehensive, 6-7 hour read filled with practical insights. 993: Johann Hari | The Skinny on 'Magic Pill' Weight-Loss Drugs

Are new weight loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy "magic" pills that can put an end to the obesity epidemic? Johann Hari is here to give us the skinny!

What We Discuss with Johann Hari:

    • Processed and ultra-processed foods are a major driver of the obesity epidemic, as they undermine the body's natural ability to feel full and satisfied after eating. Moving from fresh, whole foods to mostly processed foods is strongly linked to the dramatic rise in obesity rates.
    • Obesity is a complex issue with biological, psychological, and social causes. Factors like genetics, emotional eating, trauma, and the food environment all play a role. Stigmatizing or shaming people for their weight is cruel and counterproductive.
    • New weight loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy work by artificially boosting satiety hormones like GLP-1, helping people feel full faster and eat less. They are showing impressive weight loss results, but also come with potential risks and side effects that are not yet fully understood, especially in the long-term.
    • While these new drugs may help many people, they are not a magic solution. They don't address the underlying drivers of the obesity crisis in the food system and environment. To make a real difference, we need broader changes to make healthy eating the easy, default option.
    • The good news is, each of us can take positive steps today to improve our health, no matter our current weight. Focus on adding more whole, minimally processed foods to your diet, and find physical activities you truly enjoy. Prioritize getting good sleep, managing stress, and building a strong social support network. Small, sustainable lifestyle changes can make a big difference over time. Be patient and kind with yourself in the process. You have the power to transform your health, one choice at a time.
    • And much more...

    992: Royals | Skeptical Sunday

What's the point of the publicly funded British Royal family in the modern world? Andrew Gold puts the monarchy under a microscope on this Skeptical Sunday!

    On This Week's Skeptical Sunday:

    • The British monarchy is a centuries-old institution that has had a significant impact on the UK's culture, politics, and history. While the monarch's role is largely ceremonial, the royal family still holds influence and plays a significant part in British society.
    • The British Royal Family receives public funding through the Sovereign Grant, which is calculated as a percentage of the profits made by the Crown Estate. The Sovereign Grant covers official expenses, while the monarch also has personal income from private estates.
    • The monarchy faces challenges in maintaining its relevance in an increasingly democratic and progressive world. The royal family must balance tradition with adapting to changing societal values and expectations.
    • The popularity of individual members of the royal family, such as Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles, Prince William, and Prince Harry, can significantly impact public perception of the monarchy as a whole.
    • Despite the controversies and challenges surrounding the British monarchy, it remains an integral part of the nation's identity and continues to captivate people worldwide. By focusing on their roles as symbols of unity, continuity, and tradition, while also embracing positive change and engaging in meaningful charitable work, the royal family can maintain its relevance and contribute to the well-being of the British people and the global community.

990: Jonathan Haidt | How Gen Z Became the Anxious Generation

990: Jonathan Haidt | How Gen Z Became the Anxious Generation

Jonathan Haidt is here to talk about his latest book, The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness.

What We Discuss with Jonathan Haidt:

    • Social media and smartphones have drastically altered childhood since the early 2010s, leading to increased rates of anxiety, depression, self-harm, and suicide among teens, especially girls.
    • Virtual interactions on social media are disembodied, shallow, and can spread mental health issues among susceptible teens. Prestige biased learning causes teens to emulate influencers, even those promoting unhealthy behaviors. Smartphones and social media also enable sexual predators to easily target children online.
    • Overprotection in the real world and underprotection online are both mistakes that need to be reversed. Parents have allowed kids too much unsupervised screen time while restricting their independence and free play in the physical world out of exaggerated fears.
    • Schools and parents need to set clear boundaries around technology use. No smartphones before high school, no social media until age 16, and phone-free schools from bell to bell are key norms to establish. The longer parents delay introducing these technologies, the better.
    • Although the situation is serious, positive change is possible when parents, educators, and lawmakers work together. Parents can start by giving kids more independence and free play time offline, schools can go phone-free, and governments can pass laws to make online spaces safer for kids. With collective action, we can restore a healthier childhood for the next generation. Small steps like "Free Play Fridays" for neighborhood kids can make a difference right away. By coming together to solve this, we can ensure today's youth have the space to develop into competent, well-adjusted adults.

    • How Robert built rapport with targets by researching their interests, using active listening, and offering them gifts to gain their trust.
    • Undercover agents must be laser-focused on their targets and avoid thinking about their personal lives, as any slip-up could compromise the operation and endanger their safety.
    • During trials, these agents must be prepared for defense attorneys' tactics, such as role reversal, and maintain their composure to avoid compromising the case or their credibility in front of the jury.

    986: Porn | Skeptical Sunday

Has technology weaponized pornography into a public health crisis? Michael Regilio takes us through modern porn's ins and outs on this Skeptical Sunday!

    On This Week's Skeptical Sunday:

    • High-speed internet porn is a recent phenomenon that provides an intense, novel experience unlike traditional pornography, hacking into our brain's evolutionary desires for new mates and triggering dopamine responses similar to drug addiction.
    • Pornography use, especially among adolescents and young adults who grew up with easy access to internet porn, has been linked to erosion of gray matter in the brain's prefrontal cortex, which controls impulse control and decision-making.
    • Porn use has been associated with sexual disorders like erectile dysfunction in young men, as well as difficulties forming emotional bonds and intimacy in relationships.
    • While some psychologists dispute the existence of "porn addiction," neuroscientific evidence shows porn use can lead to compulsive behaviors and brain changes resembling substance addictions.
    • While some political efforts have been made to declare porn a public health crisis, there is little policy action based on scientific evidence to provide resources for treatment and awareness.

984: Susan Casey | Unraveling Mysteries in the Ocean's Darkest Depths

984: Susan Casey | Unraveling Mysteries in the Ocean's Darkest Depths

What challenges can the ocean help us meet, and what must we do to safeguard its treasures? The Underworld author Susan Casey dives deep for answers here!

What We Discuss with Susan Casey:

    • The ocean plays a crucial role in regulating the Earth's climate and serves as the largest carbon sink on the planet, making its preservation essential for mitigating climate change.
    • The ocean is home to a fascinating array of creatures that have adapted to extreme conditions, such as iron-breathing microbes, glass sponges, and jellyfish that can reverse their life cycle.
    • Pollution, including plastics, chemical weapons, and nuclear waste, has severely impacted the ocean ecosystem, with some deep-sea creatures found to have plastic particles embedded in their organs.
    • There are an estimated three million shipwrecks on the ocean floor, preserving valuable historical artifacts and information — such as the Antikythera mechanism, an ancient Greek analog computer.
    • Exploring the ocean can lead to groundbreaking discoveries in medicine, Earth's history, and climate, providing valuable insights for addressing humanity's challenges — provided we safeguard this treasury of knowledge for current and future generations.
    • And much more...

256: Malcolm Gladwell | What We Should Know about Talking to Strangers

Malcolm Gladwell (@gladwell) has written bestsellers that are probably on your shelf right now, including The Tipping Point, Blink, Outliers, and What the Dog Saw. His latest book is Talking to Strangers: What We Should Know about the People We Don't Know.

What We Discuss with Malcolm Gladwell:

    • Why, if we don't know how to talk to strangers, we invite conflict and misunderstanding in ways that have a profound effect on our lives and our world.
    • Why the information we gather from face-to-face human interaction isn't as uniquely valuable as we think it is.
    • Why television makes us worse at reading other people.
    • Why we think we can tell if someone is lying, guilty, or deceptive -- and why we're almost always wrong.
    • What determines the direction of Malcolm's projects, and how he researches and organizes the massive amount of information that goes into them.

On This Week's Feedback Friday, We Discuss:

    • Gabe relays the tragic story of a paranoid schizophrenic neighbor that illustrates just how destabilizing unchecked mental illness can be for family members, friends, neighbors, and the patients themselves.
    • In spite of having a dream job and a significant other who checks most of your boxes, current circumstances make imagining a future in your native Russia difficult. Unfortunately, this significant other comes from a conservative family and doesn't understand why you'd ever want to move abroad. Are your differences too radical to build a life together?
    • Your boss is an incredible leader who commands respect across the board. Unfortunately, a family tragedy has overwhelmed her with grief. How can your team offer support without intruding on her personal life?
    • Your significant other is great in every respect -- except for when he gets in a "mood" and resorts to calling you names and putting you down. Where do you draw the line on verbal abuse?
    • Is it possible to profit from selling your business idea when you don't have the financial means to create your own startup around that idea?

365: Benjamin Hardy | How to Break Free from Self-Limiting Beliefs

Benjamin Hardy (@BenjaminPHardy) is an organizational psychologist and author of Willpower Doesn't Work: Discover the Hidden Keys to Success and Personality Isn't Permanent: Break Free from Self-Limiting Beliefs and Rewrite Your Story.

What We Discuss with Benjamin Hardy:

    • Why treating the results of a "scientific" personality test like Myers & Briggs or Enneagram as gospel is akin to trusting horoscopes to safely guide your life decisions -- inaccurate and potentially dangerous.
    • Hear the story about how Benjamin and his wife almost didn't get married because a personality test indicated they weren't an ideal match.
    • What looking back at the person you were 10 or 20 years ago should reveal about personality as an unfixed, malleable quality.
    • Why categorizing yourself or accepting labels leads to a tunnel vision of mindlessness that tends to accentuate the negative qualities you believe yourself to have.
    • You're always a work in progress -- you're never "finished." The person you'll be in 10 years may well be as different as you are from the person you were 10 years ago. So who do you want the future you to be?
