    • Navigating the changes of becoming a parentParenting brings about significant physical and emotional changes, including a newfound sense of responsibility and a deep connection to one's child.

Becoming a parent brings about numerous changes, both subtle and significant, that can be challenging to recognize and navigate. These changes can range from the physical, such as sleep deprivation, to the emotional, like feeling the weight of responsibility for another human being. Some parents reported feeling transformed on the day their child was born, while others noted that the changes crept up on them gradually. Regardless of when or how the changes occurred, they often involved a newfound sense of responsibility and a need to "get a little more together." Parents also reported feeling a profound connection to their children and a deep sense of love and protection. Overall, the consensus was that becoming a parent brings about a profound shift in one's identity and perspective on life.

    • Parenting leads to personal growth and transformationBecoming a parent pushes individuals to reevaluate priorities, let go of perfectionism, and strive to be better versions of themselves

Becoming a parent often leads to introspection and personal growth. For some, like the speaker, it may involve making changes to align with their new identity. The pressure to be a responsible parent can lead individuals to question their past choices and strive to be better versions of themselves. Desi, for instance, felt this transformation when he became a father at a young age. He realized that his life was not just about him anymore, and he had to be a better person to raise his child. Laura, on the other hand, discovered that parenthood requires emotional resilience and letting go of perfectionism. Parenting can be relentless, and it may challenge individuals to dig deep and find the strength to keep going, even when they feel drained. It's essential to accept that it's okay to have bad days and to let go of regrets, focusing instead on enjoying the present moment with their children. Overall, becoming a parent can be a transformative experience that forces individuals to reevaluate their priorities and become the best versions of themselves.

    • Parenting unlocks hidden strengthsBecoming a parent can lead to personal growth and self-discovery, transforming one's perception of themselves.

Becoming a parent can unlock hidden strengths and transform one's perception of themselves. Anxious about pregnancy and her ability to be a good mother due to her history with anxiety and depression, Sarah found herself able to relax and enjoy her new role once she realized her daughter was okay. For Rebecca, becoming a mother helped her understand her identity and unlocked a sense of belonging and capability. These women's experiences show that parenthood can lead to personal growth and self-discovery, rather than being a limitation or hindrance.

    • Personal growth through parenthood and seeking helpRecognizing and dealing with personal challenges, seeking help, and practicing self-care are essential for personal growth during parenthood. Try Audible for free and listen to 'Age of Vice' for an engaging read.

Becoming a parent can bring out the best and worst parts of oneself, leading to personal growth and transformation. The speaker shares her experience of going through depression and seeking help, which was motivated by her desire to be present for her son. She emphasizes that recognizing these parts of oneself takes effort, and coming up next, they will discuss how to deal with change and handle it when it feels challenging. Additionally, the speaker highlights the benefits of therapy and self-care, mentioning her use of Audible for audio entertainment and Quince for wardrobe upgrades. She recommends the thrilling and well-written audiobook "Age of Vice" by Deepi Kapoor and encourages listeners to try Audible free for 30 days. The speaker also expresses her excitement about using the Quince website to purchase affordable and high-quality clothing items. Overall, the discussion emphasizes the importance of personal growth, self-care, and embracing change.

    • Navigating the ups and downs of parenthoodBecoming a parent involves intense identity shifts and daily life transformations, offering opportunities for growth and resilience through mindfulness practices

Becoming a parent involves intense transformations, both in terms of personal identity and daily life. Yael Shai, a mindfulness and meditation teacher and mother, shares her experience of the ups and downs of this journey. She recalls the overwhelming moments of exhaustion and the unexpected strength that helped her get through. Shai explains that our identities shift when we become parents because we are faced with the reality of loving something deeply yet having limited control over it. This realization can be challenging, but it also offers an opportunity for growth and resilience. Mindfulness practices, such as meditation, can help parents navigate these changes and find the inner strength to face the joys and struggles of parenthood.

    • Navigating the loss of old life as a parentEmbrace change and grieve loss to grow as a parent, allowing emotions to flow and learn from the discomfort of life's natural transitions

Becoming a parent brings a new level of love and devotion, but also introduces the harsh reality of suffering and loss. This can be destabilizing as we realize we never truly had control over our lives. Grieving the loss of our old life is a necessary part of the process, and resisting change only causes inner suffering. Softening and allowing emotions to come through, even the unpleasant ones, is the path to growth for both parents and children. The discomfort of change is a natural part of life, like a lobster shedding its shell, and embracing it is the way forward.

    • Recognize, Allow, Inquire, Nourish EmotionsPractice R.A.I.N. to manage emotions: Recognize, Allow, Inquire, and Nourish. Pausing to acknowledge emotions, accepting them, investigating their cause, and caring for self can improve well-being.

Recognizing and addressing emotional changes as they happen is crucial for parents. This can be achieved through a simple meditation practice called R.A.I.N. (Recognize, Allow, Inquire, Nourish). First, recognize the emotions and pause to acknowledge their presence. Next, allow the emotions by accepting them without judgment. Then, inquire by investigating the root cause of the emotions. Lastly, nourish yourself by taking care of your needs and practicing self-compassion. Despite its simplicity, implementing the nourish step can be challenging due to external pressures and the urge to keep pushing through tasks. By taking the time to nourish ourselves, we can better manage emotional changes and improve overall well-being.

    • Self-care and compassion for parentsRecognize and validate emotions, prioritize family values, and practice self-care for healthy and happy family life.

Self-care and compassion are essential, not only for raising healthy and happy children but also for taking care of ourselves. The speaker acknowledges the fear and irrationality of neglecting her own needs, comparing herself to a struggling child in need of rest and compassion. She encourages the practice of recognizing and validating difficult emotions, just as we would for our children. The speaker also emphasizes the importance of establishing family values, not only for our children but also for ourselves, allowing us to make mistakes and learn from them. Through sharing personal experiences and insights, she highlights the importance of treating ourselves with the same care and understanding we offer our loved ones.

    • Unique bond with each childLove for each child is unique and parents can form a strong bond despite cultural norms. Try GEDIFY shoes for knee and back pain relief, and use Indeed for efficient hiring.

Love for children is a unique and limitless experience for each parent. During a conversation with other families, the speaker shared his experience of feeling fully involved and loving towards his newborn child, despite it being uncommon in his culture. He initially thought he wouldn't be able to give the same amount of love to another child, but later learned that each child creates their own unique bond. The speaker's father, who was present during the conversation, emphasized that love remains full no matter how much it is given. Another takeaway from the episode was the introduction of GEDIFY shoes, a footwear company that aims to relieve knee and back pain. The speaker, who has dealt with these issues for years, expressed excitement about trying out the shoes, which come with custom orthotics, patented VersaShock technology, and a strong structural system to improve posture. Lastly, the importance of using Indeed for hiring was emphasized. With over 350 million global monthly visitors and a matching engine that learns from your preferences, Indeed can help businesses find quality candidates efficiently. Listeners of the show can get a $75 sponsored job credit to increase their job visibility on Indeed.com/happier.

    • The Swan: A Reality Show Gone WrongThe Swan serves as a cautionary tale against the allure of quick fixes and easy solutions, highlighting the importance of considering potential negative consequences and the impact on others.

The allure of quick fame and transformation can lead to disastrous results, as evidenced by the reality TV show "The Swan." In the early 2000s, this program promised women a chance to undergo extensive physical transformations and compete in a beauty pageant. However, the isolation, berating, and ranking by judges turned this dream opportunity into a viewing nightmare. As we discussed on The Big Flop podcast, comedians and I explored the question of who thought this was a good idea. The Swan serves as a reminder of the importance of considering the potential negative consequences of our actions and the impact they may have on others. Whether it's in reality TV or other areas of life, it's crucial to think critically and avoid the allure of quick fixes or easy solutions that may ultimately cause harm. Listen to The Big Flop on the Wondery app or wherever you get your podcasts to learn more about other pop culture fails. The Science Of Getting Out Of Your Head | Annie Murphy Paul

An acclaimed science writer on how to upgrade your mind by using more than your head.

When you think about thinking, most of us think of it as a supremely solo pursuit. You’re in your head, concentrating and cogitating, all by yourself. But the science shows that if you want to improve your thinking, you need to get out of your head. Today we’re going to talk about a concept called “the extended mind.” Your mind isn’t just in your skull: it’s in your body, it’s in the people around you, it’s in your surroundings. The best thinking requires that you break out of what the writer David Foster Wallace called “the skull sized kingdom” and access these other resources.

This may sound abstract, but our guest today makes it very practical. Annie Murphy Paul is an acclaimed science writer whose work has appeared in the New York Times, the Boston Globe, Scientific American, Slate, Time, and The Best American Science Writing, among many other publications. She is the author of Origins and The Cult of Personality, hailed by Malcolm Gladwell as a “fascinating new book.” Currently a fellow at New America, Paul has spoken to audiences around the world about learning and cognition; her TED talk has been viewed by more than 2.6 million people. A graduate of Yale University and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, she has served as a lecturer at Yale University and as a senior advisor at their Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning. Her latest book is The Extended Mind: The Power of Thinking Outside the Brain

In this episode, we also talk about:

    • How to use your surroundings to think better
    • My favorite of the three areas of this book – thinking with our relationships
    • Why “groupthink” isn’t always a bad thing (OR you can say, the benefits of thinking in groups)
    • What she called “extension inequality” – that this benefit of the extended mind isn’t available to all people

1945 You Measure What You Treasure

1945 You Measure What You Treasure

If you ever wondered your worth and what you value, look at what's in your heart. You measure what you treasure.

Your actions. Your belongings. All are calculated investments in your life.

Our children watch to see what we treasure. There they measure what our heart shows as treasure.

As we drove up today to pick up my son's cap and gown, pictures were made of each of the students. This is a large school, so there were a lot of pictures.

Driving through the high school campus, you could see what the school treasured, the students.

The hope of the future is in the hands of these children. And this is where the staff and community poured their hearts into.

What do you treasure when it comes to your child?

Because you measure what you treasure.

The K.I.S.S. ~ Measure what you want to treasure!

"For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." ~ Matthew 6:21

And for some children, the only thing they see that their parents treasure is how they measure.

    1. How do you measure your child? Is it by his grades? Her accomplishments? Or is it by his/her heart?
    2. What are you telling your child by how you measure? Are you painting the picture that they are only worth based on how they can perform? Or do you value them for their heart?
    3. What do you want to treasure that you should measure? Is it their heart and seeing them for who that are and not what they do.

Feeling loved and wanted is a human desire of us all. But when it comes to our children and raising the next generation, we must open our hearts so they can see what we treasure are their hearts too.

Don't let the value and worth of your child be defined by their actions and doings.

Get to know your child's heart, and they too will know yours.

"Be present. Be incredible. Be YOU!!!"
