    Podcast Summary

    • Leveraging LinkedIn for Hiring and Building a Clear Brand IdentityLinkedIn is a powerful tool for finding professionals who aren't actively looking for new jobs, and having a clear brand identity and separate workspace are essential for small business success.

LinkedIn is a valuable resource for finding professionals who aren't actively looking for new jobs but could be a great fit for your small business. Sandra, a professional who wasn't found on other job sites, emphasized that over 70% of LinkedIn users don't visit other leading job sites. Connor Walker, the founder and CEO of House of CB, shared her success story of building a multimillion-pound business with a clear brand identity and USPs. During their conversation, they also discussed the importance of having a separate workspace for work-life balance. In terms of House of CB's product evolution, Sandra highlighted how the brand has moved from neon bandage dresses to figure-hugging, curve-embracing pieces that rival high-end designers' silhouettes. Overall, the podcast episode emphasized the importance of using LinkedIn for hiring and the benefits of having a clear brand identity and separate workspace.

    • Maintaining brand consistency crucial for business successStaying true to brand identity, understanding customers, and having a genuine passion for the business are keys to achieving long-term success.

Maintaining brand consistency while evolving is crucial for business success, as demonstrated by House of CB. The brand's focus on creating confident-making clothes for women, with a consistent feminine shape, has been core to their identity since the beginning. Founder and CEO, Carol Hernandez, emphasizes that understanding the customer's wants and staying true to one's passion for the business are essential. She has no interest in expanding into menswear and believes it's important to only pursue opportunities where there's a deep understanding of the market and the customer. The brand has made mistakes in the past by compromising their DNA to cater to trends, but these instances did not work and were rejected by the customer. Overall, staying true to the brand's identity, understanding the customer, and having a genuine passion for the business are key to achieving long-term success.

    • Staying true to your brand while adapting to trendsAdapt to trends while staying true to your brand's values and quality. Learn from mistakes and use criticism as a tool for self-improvement. Everyone makes mistakes, but they're soon forgotten.

Staying true to your brand while adapting to trends is crucial for business success. The speaker shares her experience of introducing loungewear to her dress company, which initially seemed like a misfit but turned out to be a hit due to its alignment with the brand's values and quality. However, mistakes are inevitable, and it's essential to learn from them rather than getting discouraged. The speaker emphasizes the importance of self-competition and using criticism as a tool for self-improvement. She also mentions that everyone makes mistakes, and they are soon forgotten. In essence, staying true to your brand, learning from mistakes, and using competition as a driving force for self-improvement are vital for business success.

    • Consistency and cohesiveness in brandingFocus on being a good marketer, having a solid product, and selling effectively to build a strong brand, avoiding gimmicky labels and taking business seriously.

Creating a strong brand involves consistency and cohesiveness in brand voice and visuals across all platforms. It's important to focus on being the best marketer, having a good product or service, and selling it effectively, rather than having a unique selling point alone. Additionally, labels like "girlboss" can be problematic and infantilizing, and it's essential to be taken seriously as a business owner regardless of gender. When scaling a business, proving oneself internally and externally can be a challenge, but staying focused on the vision and growth strategies is crucial.

    • Finding the right fit and balance on your teamTrust your vision and brand identity, respect strengths and weaknesses, communicate effectively, and utilize LinkedIn to find valuable professionals

Building a successful team involves finding the right fit and balance between experience and authenticity. When starting out, it's common to feel underestimated due to age or inexperience, leading to a need to overcompensate. However, it's essential to trust your vision and brand identity, even if it means hiring people who may have more experience in certain areas. It's also crucial to respect each other's strengths and weaknesses, and communicate effectively. LinkedIn can be an invaluable tool in finding professionals who may not be actively looking for a new job but could bring valuable experience and expertise to your team. Remember, it's not just about experience, but also about finding people who respect and understand your brand vision.

    • Affordable travel essentials with ethical manufacturingQuince offers stylish, affordable travel essentials while prioritizing ethical manufacturing practices. The founder's personal struggles with staying true to their brand despite constant opinions highlights the importance of authenticity.

Quince offers high-quality, stylish travel essentials at affordable prices, while also prioritizing ethical manufacturing practices. The founder, who experiences impostor syndrome, shared her personal struggles with dealing with constant opinions and the importance of staying true to their brand, even when it's not suitable for everyone. Running two businesses, Mistress Rocks and House of CB, the teams are the same, but the product focus varies. The idea of having one brand that caters to a specific audience with a decent quality item at an accessible price point is a fantastic concept. However, it's important to note that the quality may not be as high as some other brands, but the difference in price reflects that. The founder also shared her experience of constantly feeling like she's compromising one brand for the other.

    • Focus on core functions and hire experienced staffHire early, delegate tasks, and maintain a consistent creative output to contribute to business growth.

Prioritizing your business's core functions and delegating tasks to experienced staff at the right time can significantly contribute to its growth. The speaker emphasized that House of CB comes first in their business due to the machine being built specifically for it. They also mentioned hiring their first experienced staff member early on for tech-related tasks and gradually expanding the team as the company grew and as they recognized their own limitations. The speaker advised entrepreneurs to hire as soon as they can afford to, as getting bogged down in small details can hinder business growth. They also shared their personal frustration with handling customer service emails and encouraged entrepreneurs to delegate this task when possible. Lastly, the speaker expressed a desire to maintain a consistent creative output in their job, recognizing the challenges and unpredictability that come with running a business.

    • The importance of rest and self-motivation for productivity and creativityTaking breaks and allowing for rest can boost productivity and creativity. Embrace self-motivation and adapt to different working styles for success.

Taking a break or allowing for rest can be beneficial for productivity and creativity, even during challenging times. This was evident for the interviewee during the pandemic when they were able to take a production break, reset, and come back with their best-selling collection. However, there are also times when the interviewee thrives under pressure and finds motivation in deadlines. Ultimately, it's important to recognize the value of rest and self-motivation, as well as the ability to adapt to different working styles. The interviewee also shared that their hardest days at work often come when they feel uncertain or unmotivated, and in those moments, they try to take a step back and refocus. It's important to remember that everyone has different working styles and that embracing rest and self-motivation can lead to productivity and success.

    • Finding balance in life and enjoying leisure activitiesIt's essential to find a balance between work and leisure, take time off, and not feel guilty for enjoying oneself. Working smart and maximizing opportunities is more important than physically working to exhaustion.

It's important to find a balance in life and not be too hard on oneself. The interviewee shares that they enjoy both work and leisure activities, and taking time off is essential for rest and resetting. They believe that working smart and maximizing opportunities is more important than physically working oneself to exhaustion. It's okay to do whatever one wants during time off and not feel guilty about it. The interviewee also acknowledges the importance of being grateful for what one has and recognizes that everyone's circumstances and opportunities are different. The glamorization of working hard to the point of exhaustion, as seen on social media, can be a warped view, and it's crucial to ask oneself if the work being done is productive and not just for the sake of appearing busy.

    • The Importance of Self-Care for Productivity and SuccessPrioritize rest and self-care for productivity, creativity, and overall performance. Engage in naps, productivity hacks, and leave podcast reviews. Express appreciation to loved ones through personalized gestures.

Prioritizing rest and self-care is essential for productivity, creativity, and overall performance in work and life. Running on fumes may work for some, but for most individuals, taking care of physical and mental health is crucial. Grace Beverly, a guest on the "Working Hard, Hardly Working" podcast, emphasized the importance of naps, tips, and tricks for productivity, and encouraged listeners to engage with her on social media. She also highlighted the significance of leaving podcast reviews on Apple Podcasts. Additionally, she promoted Moonpig's Mother's Day card offer, emphasizing the importance of personalized and thoughtful gestures for celebrating mothers. In essence, taking care of oneself and expressing appreciation to loved ones are key to achieving success and happiness.

Ep. 93 How To Start Investing, Clear Your Debt & Take Control Of Your Finances With Simran Kaur

Simran Kaur is a VC, angel investor, financial columnist and the founder of Girls That Invest, the world’s largest investing podcast for women. She’s received so many accolades in her time, from Young New Zealander of the Year, to Forbes30u30, but she’s started out in healthcare as an optometrist who read a few research papers on investing. Her journey is fascinating, and she was so so full of actionable advice. My favourite quote of hers is, ‘it takes someone intelligent to explain something simply’. She is a quintessential example of exactly that.

I don’t want to offend the other guests, but Will Ahmed might be the most impressive guest we’ve ever had on this podcast. Aged just 22, whilst still a student at Harvard, he founded Whoop, a wearable health tracker that measures the minutiae of your heart rate data to give you insights on your strain & recovery.

10 years later, the company is worth $3.6 BILLION and Whoop is worn by athletes across the world, from LeBron James to Michael Phelps. Will’s story is properly incredible, but what’s even more amazing is his advice on how to find success & sustain it.

Ep. 86 How To Change Your Relationship With Your Finances Forever With Vivian Tu

Vivian Tu wants to change our relationship with finances forever, and her story is incredible. Vivian is a first-generation Asian American, who grafted her way to Wall Street, facing misogyny and racism on her way. She spent years on the trading floors, making the kind of money she always dreamed of, in an environment where she was one of only two women on her team. When she left finance & moved into a strategy role, she noticed she was always the go-to person for money-making questions, tax returns, investing, pensions. Becoming increasingly worried by the amount of dodgy information regarding finance online, she started making her own educational content under the handle ‘Your Rich BFF’. Now, she has over 6 million followers and a best-selling book to her name. She says her aim is to teach everyone the “lessons that rich dads have been teaching their rich sons on the golf course." I can’t wait to speak to Vivian about her story.

Ep. 85 The Habit Theory That Changed My Life, Explained

Ep. 85 The Habit Theory That Changed My Life, Explained

When I started the podcast I wanted it to be all about life improvement from every angle, not just the ones we're all taught about.

We've put so much effort into improving the guest episodes this year, but if I'm totally honest I felt the solo episodes needed re-vamping to make them the most useful resource possible. I LOVE explainer podcasts on everything from history to celebrity scandals. So we're trialling a new 15-minute explainer format. I’ve given myself an excuse to spend hours researching the topics I wish I knew more about so you don’t need to read a whole book to understand something important.

So I've started with one of the most important things I've researched over the last few years: habit theory and why everyone on Instagram says it changed their life (including me).

The episode is only 15 minutes long, so perfect for your morning hot girl walk! Let me know what you think!

“you have to go for it. Everybody says you have to go for it and then people say okay I am going to go for it. But going for it means different things for different people. So when I say go for it I mean that if you decide you are going to start a business, you are going to be your own boss, you are going to build a brand, whatever it is that you are going to do to kind of take charge of life. You have to be willing to push back obstacles, you have to overcome hardships potentially but you have to be all in.
