    Toast - Toys R Us

    Toast - Toys R Us

Why did Toys R Us have to close all of its UK superstores in 2018?

While Sliced Bread takes a break we serve up… Toast. A study of the spectacular failures of brands which had promised so much to consumers.

In each episode, the presenter and BBC business journalist, Sean Farrington, examines one big idea. What did it promise? Why did it fail? What can we learn from it today?

In this Christmas special, Sean examines the charming story behind one of our best-known toy brands before hearing how it faltered.

Expert commentators and employees reflect on why the business had been so successful and what went wrong.

Alongside them is the self-made millionaire and serial entrepreneur, Sam White, to analyse the missteps that changed the brand’s fortunes.

Together, they hear how Toys R Us is making a comeback in the UK.

You can email the programme at toast@bbc.co.uk

Feel free to suggest topics which we could cover in future episodes.

From big tech to high street retail and, of course, food, Toast tackles the business ideas that, one way or another, ended up cooked.

Sliced Bread returns for a new batch of investigations in February. In the new series, Greg Foot will investigate more of the latest so-called wonder products to find out whether they really are the best thing since sliced bread. In the meantime, Toast is available in the Sliced Bread feed on BBC Sounds.

Toast is produced by Jon Douglas and Viant Siddique and is a BBC Audio North production for Radio 4 and BBC Sounds.

Why nostalgia is such a powerful force for brand marketing

Why nostalgia is such a powerful force for brand marketing
What do Chanel, Heinz 57, and Coors Light all have in common? They’re all brands that have built a connection with their consumers. On today’s episode, we’re looking at our company’s ‘Brands That Matter’ recognition program with ‘Fast Company’ senior staff editor Jeff Beer. Not only is it about building connections, but also developing culturally relevant messaging, making an impact through social causes, and communicating their mission and values clearly. We also chat about peak marketing nostalgia and, specifically, how Kraft Macaroni & Cheese is re-releasing SpongeBob shapes, which seems like a perfect example of a brand keying into what millennials miss about childhood. ‘Are you ok with being in the shadows?’ Bobby Kim, aka Bobby Hundreds, talks about how he started his streetwear brand, The Hundreds, 20 years ago. Every year, there’s always a debate about what streetwear is—some people say it’s not cool anymore because of elitism and snobbery within subcultures. To get around this, Hundreds says you need young people discovering it for first time, as well as seasoned veterans weighing in, for a brand to have lore and build a legacy. Most streetwear brands are built to be ephemeral, but Hundreds said what helped his company was sticking to its core values: honesty, communication, and being personable. “People never go out of style.” Check out @bobbyhundreds and The Hundreds’ Substack ‘Monologue’: https://bobbyhundreds.substack.com/p/the-importance-of-diversity-and-representation

    #54: Stop Listening to Customers?!
Customers lie all the time. In fact, we all lie, often without even knowing it. When asked, 25% of high school seniors say they’re in the top 1%. Often talking to customers can lead to bias, unreliable results. So my latest guest has a solution … stop talking to customers. Today, Adam Ferrier and I discuss why companies like Apple and IKEA don’t listen to their customers and how market research can make your brand bland. The Life Is Good Company: Bert and John Jacobs

The Life Is Good Company: Bert and John Jacobs
In the late 80s, brothers Bert and John Jacobs were living as nomads, traveling from college to college selling t-shirts out of their van. It wasn't a sustainable living – until one day, they created a new design. It was a simple sketch of a grinning face, with three words printed underneath: Life Is Good. The optimistic message was deeply personal to the brothers, who grew up in what they describe as a dysfunctional home – and it also resonated with customers, who started buying Life Is Good designs printed on just about anything, from towels to tire covers. Today, the Life Is Good Company has a reported annual revenue of $100 million. PLUS in our postscript "How You Built That," Jim Malone of CounterEv Furniture describes how he turns reclaimed wood from bowling alleys into tables and chairs for fast-casual restaurants. In this episode, Craig and Bedros talk about the seven strategies behind building a brand for your business. Today, people don’t solely buy things for the service it provides. They buy into the personal identity of your business. The more connected customers feel to your brand, the more you can dominate the competition in your market.

    Here’s what you’ll discover:

2:25 - How Fit Body Boot Camp builds a deep connection with the end user by stepping out of the studio and into the comedy.

4:03 - How bringing charity into your business inspires global and local change while adding a competitive edge.

6:58 - Why you need to embrace change and lead with courage and confidence before you perish.

9:43 - Why building morale around your brand will create a strong culture and crush the competition.

15:10 -  How building your team members up into fighter jets grows your brand and impact.

A Business Meeting with THE EIGHTH; A Men's Luxury Underwear Line

A Business Meeting with THE EIGHTH; A Men's Luxury Underwear Line
This is the first of a new episode format that I'm going to be releasing more often: business meetings! Unedited from start to beginning! I wanted to give all you listeners a peek into I how conduct meetings and what it's like to be in a strategy meeting with me and my team.  In this first installment of meetings, I sit down and talk with The Eighth, a fairly new retail business attacking the white space they saw in the men's luxury underwear market. We discuss their early days in researching and identifying the market, luxury branding, SEM and SEO approaches, influencer marketing, content creation and the importance of documenting versus creating. For the listeners that have asked in the past, this is some really good insight into how I approach introductory business meetings, evaluate the viability of new businesses, and suggest marketing strategies. Thanks for listening, excited to hear your thoughts and learnings from this one.
