    en-usFebruary 07, 2022

    Podcast Summary

    • Creative professionals and their financial fearsCreative professionals can overcome their financial fears by seeking out resources and tools, such as Apple Card and Equinix, to help build a solid financial foundation.

Creative professionals often feel unequipped when it comes to managing their finances. They may view themselves as being "not the kind of person" who is good with money and struggle to navigate the financial world with confidence. According to Paco de Leon, a financial coach and bookkeeper, this perception is often rooted in personal experiences and a lack of financial education. However, it's important for creatives to recognize that understanding and managing their finances is crucial for the success of their businesses or side hustles. As Paco puts it, "When the brunch has to be perfect and delicious, go to your local Whole Foods Market." Just as Whole Foods Market offers wallet-friendly options for hosting a celebratory brunch, there are resources and tools available to help creative professionals build a solid financial foundation. For instance, Apple Card offers daily cash rewards on purchases, and Equinix provides the infrastructure and expertise to help bring innovative ideas to life. By seeking out these resources and embracing their financial literacy, creatives can turn their financial fears into achievements.

    • Managing Finances for Creatives: A NecessitySetting aside weekly finance time, focusing on financial tasks, and separating side hustle finances from personal finances are crucial for creatives to gain peace of mind and make informed business decisions.

Creatives often have negative perceptions about managing finances for their work due to industry stereotypes and emotions. However, neglecting financial planning can lead to stress and lack of clarity in decision-making. To address this, setting aside weekly finance time is crucial for freelancers and creative professionals. This dedicated time allows focusing on financial tasks, such as paying bills, reconciling accounts, and addressing invoices. One common challenge is keeping side hustle finances separate from personal finances. While it may seem daunting to open a new account, it simplifies tax preparation and fosters a mindset of professionalism and growth. By prioritizing financial management, creatives can gain peace of mind and make informed business decisions.

    • Effectively managing business financesSeparate business finances, observe money flow, set up tax savings, save 10-30% of earnings, consider professional help, understand market demand.

Managing your business finances effectively is crucial for any side gig or freelance work. This includes separating business expenses and earnings from personal finances, observing the flow of money, and setting up a tax savings account. Aim to save between 10% to 30% of every dollar earned. If starting out, surplus cash can be reinvested or saved for retirement. As your business grows, you may need professional help from an accountant to navigate complex financial matters and ensure regular income for major life goals like buying a home. Additionally, it's important to understand your market and the demand for your offerings by identifying the problem you're solving for potential customers. This can help you align your expectations with the market's reality and increase your chances of success.

    • Understanding Profit Margins and Pricing StrategiesStart with industry norms from professional associations, initially price based on experience, transition to value-based pricing, consider your market position and clientele, and understand your unique value proposition.

When it comes to testing the market and determining pricing for your products or services, it's important to understand your profit margins and benchmarks. Starting with your community, such as professional associations, can provide valuable insights into industry norms. Initially, pricing may reflect your perceived experience and may be hourly. However, as you gain more experience and become more in-demand, pricing based on value can be more effective in attracting desirable clients. Consider your position in the marketplace and the clientele you aim to serve. Remember, the creative aspect of business allows you to choose your niche and pricing strategy. Be it the affordable option or a premium service, understanding your unique value proposition and messaging is crucial.

    • Flexible and experimental mindset in businessTest ideas, assess audience response, adapt, explore resources, recognize pain points, plan for risks

Approaching business, including pricing, with a flexible and experimental mindset can alleviate the stress and self-doubt often associated with finance and entrepreneurship. The speaker emphasizes the importance of testing ideas, assessing audience response, and adapting accordingly. She also highlights the creative potential of business and finance, encouraging those with a propensity for self-learning to explore various resources and tools. However, recognizing and addressing pain points or limitations in managing certain aspects of the business can signal the need for external help or investment. Lastly, for new business owners, considering potential financial risks and planning for the worst-case scenario can provide valuable peace of mind during the volatile early stages.

    • Testing the Market with Price ExperimentsAssessing risk and being adaptable are crucial for self-employment. Raising prices can help identify ideal clients and project sizes, while focusing on financial runway and emotional well-being can provide relief during uncertain times. When scaling, write down tasks and consider outsourcing or hiring to grow beyond capacity.

When it comes to self-employment and financial risks, understanding the importance of assessing risk and being adaptable is crucial. One method for testing your market and potential for growth is by experimenting with raising your prices. This can help identify your ideal clientele and the size of projects you can handle. Additionally, during uncertain times, focusing on building financial runway and utilizing tools for emotional well-being, such as deep breathing, meditation, and hobbies, can provide relief and help navigate through challenges. In terms of scaling a business, it's essential to write down all tasks and consider outsourcing or hiring to grow beyond your current capacity. Remember, every business has faced uncertainty, and it's important to embrace the emotional and practical aspects of running a business during these times.

    • Practical Tips for Managing Personal Finances and Side BusinessesSpend weekly time on finances, research demand, seek advice, outsource tasks, and practice holistic financial advice to build healthy habits and a successful business.

Human beings play a crucial role in building resilient businesses. Paco De Leon, a financial planner, writer, and illustrator, emphasized this in her new book "Finance for the People." Here are some practical tips from our conversation to help you manage your personal finances and side business: 1. Set aside weekly finance time: Spend 20 minutes to an hour every week to prioritize financial tasks, such as sending invoices, logging expenses, and paying bills. 2. Research demand before offering new products or services: Determine who you're solving a problem for and whether they can afford your offerings. 3. Seek advice from peers on spending and pricing: Learn from others in your field to avoid being the cheapest option. 4. Outsource tasks when needed: Identify tasks that can be delegated and create a job description to find the right person. 5. Practice holistic financial advice: Prioritize stress management and adapt to uncertain times. By implementing these tips, you'll be on your way to building healthy financial habits and a successful business.

BMI is flawed. Try a body composition test

BMI is flawed. Try a body composition test
For decades, health experts have relied on body mass index (BMI), a ratio of weight to height, to classify people as underweight, normal weight, overweight or obese. But sometimes, you need more than two numbers to understand your health. For example, BMI can't tell you how much of your weight is fat versus muscle. That's why a growing number of researchers and physicians prefer other metrics instead. NPR health correspondent Allison Aubrey breaks down the history and shortcomings of BMI, and shares other methods to get a fuller picture of your body.

    59. “98% of our net worth is in real estate. Are we in trouble?”
Georgia and James bring a different problem to the table than we’re used to hearing about. In this one, we zoom in on where, exactly, their net worth has come from… and the real risks of these decisions. Having done well in the real estate market, Georgia and James just closed on a fourth property. The glaring issue is that they’re all located in the same neighborhood, amping up the risk of this investment class quite considerably. Georgia is becoming increasingly anxious in the shadow of this risk, urging a diversification from their overloaded 98% commitment to housing. James is not unwilling to hear the argument, which makes this episode more direct and tactical—I love it. There’s a lot to learn here. The biggest question we can ask in this case: Why are they even doing this? What is the end goal? Their answer paints a clear picture of what they need to do.
