    • Exploring Opportunities for Earning, Saving, and ThrivingExplore resources like Apple Card, Airbnb, Express Employment Professionals, and mental health experts to earn, save, and thrive in various situations

There are various opportunities to earn, save, and make the most of different situations. Apple Card offers daily cash rewards on purchases, with varying percentages for different types of transactions. Airbnb not only allows travelers to find accommodations but also encourages hosts to rent out their properties. Express Employment Professionals assists job seekers in finding employment opportunities in various industries. During the uncertain times caused by the coronavirus pandemic, it's essential to prioritize mental health and limit excessive screen time, as advised by experts like Katherine Price in her book "How to Break Up with Your Phone." These examples demonstrate the importance of exploring various resources and making the most of them to enhance our lives.

    • Balance screen time with offline activitiesBe intentional about screen use, focus on productive and connecting activities, and make informed choices based on how screens make us feel to maintain a healthy balance.

Maintaining a healthy balance between screen time and offline activities is essential, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic when our work, personal, and leisure lives have shifted online. It's not about reducing screen time per se but being intentional about it and focusing on activities that make us feel productive and connected. The analogy to think about screens like food and nutritious eating is useful - we don't need to restrict ourselves or feel guilty but instead pay attention to how screens make us feel and make more informed choices. By asking ourselves how we feel in the moment, we can make decisions that nourish us emotionally and mentally, leading to a more balanced and fulfilling lifestyle.

    • Mindful Screen Time: Choosing Online Activities WiselyBe aware of the impact of online activities on mental and emotional health. Make conscious choices to engage in nourishing online activities and limit detrimental ones.

Just as we need to be mindful of what we eat to maintain a healthy diet, we also need to be mindful of our screen time and the content we consume online. Screen time can be broken down into different "food groups," with some activities providing nourishment and others being less beneficial or even detrimental. It's important to be aware of how online emotions can impact our real lives and the people around us. We have the power to choose what we focus on, both on and offline, and making conscious choices can help boost our well-being rather than hurting it. The goal is not just to reduce screen time for the sake of it, but to use our mindfulness muscles to make strategic choices that support our mental and emotional health.

    • Managing Screen Time: Consumption, Creation, and ConnectionSetting boundaries and prioritizing consumption, creation, and connection can help make the most of screen time and improve overall well-being. Consider hiring a wellness coach for mental health support and becoming an Airbnb host for extra income.

During these challenging times, setting goals and principles for screen time usage is crucial for achieving balance. Just like having a budget for money, having a budget for screen time can help protect your time and attention from being taken by companies and apps. Consider the 3 C's of screen time: consumption, creation, and connection. Consumption refers to passively absorbing content, such as watching TV or scrolling social media. Creation involves actively engaging in activities, like working or creating art. Connection refers to using screens to communicate and build relationships with others. By setting boundaries and prioritizing these areas, we can make the most of our screen time and improve our overall well-being. Additionally, the pandemic has highlighted the importance of mental health support for young people, and certified wellness coaches can offer preventative and early intervention services to help them thrive. If you have a home but aren't always there, consider becoming an Airbnb host to earn extra income. And for those traveling during the solar eclipse, remember to explore new experiences and consider hosting as a way to earn money while you're away.

    • Balancing Screen Activities and Offline LifeFind a balance between consuming, creating, and connecting through screens and offline activities for mental and emotional health. Take deliberate breaks and prioritize self-care.

During times of stress and uncertainty, it's essential to find a balance between consumption, creation, and connection through screens. While some people may find consuming news or media soothing, others may prefer creating something or connecting with others as a way to cope. However, it's crucial to remember that even healthy activities, such as constant connection, can be overwhelming if done in excess. Therefore, it's essential to take deliberate breaks from screens to engage in offline activities and prioritize self-care. This could include activities like taking a walk without your phone, having a tech-free night with loved ones, or setting a specific time to turn off your devices. Additionally, avoid checking the news right before bed, as it can negatively impact your sleep and overall well-being. Overall, the contrast between screen activities and offline activities has become more apparent during the pandemic, highlighting the importance of balancing the two to maintain mental and emotional health.

    • Fight stress with non-screen activitiesDuring stressful times, avoid mindlessly reaching for phones by having a list of joyful, non-screen activities on hand

Taking care of our physical and mental well-being is crucial, especially during moments of stress. When we're stressed, our ability to make rational decisions can be impaired, leading us to seek quick fixes like checking social media. To combat this, it's important to have a list of non-screen activities that bring us joy and nourishment readily available. These activities can include taking a bath, listening to a podcast, stretching, or meditating. By making a list ahead of time, we can easily choose these activities instead of mindlessly reaching for our phones. Remember, every moment spent on social media is a moment taken away from something else. So, let's make the most of our time and attention by experimenting with alternative activities that truly enrich our lives.

    • Mindful screen time for individuals and kidsBe aware of your screen use and its impact on stress and anxiety. Encourage creative activities for kids and limit their screen time. Focus on the benefits of screen time and set healthy habits through conversations.

It's important for individuals and parents to be mindful of their screen time and that of their children. Constantly checking news apps can lead to increased stress and anxiety, so taking a break from them can help reduce ease of access. For kids, limiting screen time and encouraging creative activities can help them learn essential skills without relying solely on online classes. The focus should be on what we're getting out of our screen time and how it makes us feel, rather than the amount of time spent. Engaging in conversations with children about their screen use can also be beneficial in setting healthy habits. Ultimately, it's essential to consider the outcomes we want for ourselves and our children and find creative ways to achieve those goals, whether on or off a screen.

    • Setting boundaries for healthy balanceEngage kids in scheduling off-screen activities, limit screen time, set boundaries on info consumption, create rituals and physical boundaries to improve overall lifestyle

During these uncertain times, establishing boundaries is crucial for maintaining a healthy balance between work, family, and personal life, especially when it comes to screen time. Engaging children in conversations about scheduling off-screen activities and involving them in the decision-making process can help reduce tension. Additionally, setting boundaries on the type of information we consume, such as limiting notifications and removing apps, can help reduce anxiety and create a sense of control. Creating rituals and physical boundaries between work and personal life, as well as between screens and non-screen time, can also contribute to a healthier overall lifestyle. By experimenting with these suggestions, we can create a more balanced and structured routine that will benefit us both during and after the current situation.

    • Maintaining Screen Life Balance for Mental WellnessChoose intentional screen time activities, engage in virtual social connections, and prioritize offline activities for mental wellness during challenging times.

Maintaining a healthy balance between screen time and offline activities is essential for mental wellness, especially during challenging times like the COVID-19 pandemic. Katharine Wentworth, the host of The Happiness Lab podcast, emphasizes the importance of intentional screen time choices and offers practical suggestions for achieving balance through activities like online yoga, virtual dinners, and podcast listening. Additionally, she encourages finding screen-free activities that bring joy and relaxation, such as observing nature or playing games with loved ones. For more tips on maintaining screen life balance, listeners can sign up for Katharine's newsletter at screenlifebalance.com. Overall, the discussion highlights the importance of prioritizing mental health and finding joy in both online and offline activities.
