    Podcast Summary

    • Investing in youth mental health, making everyday purchases work, traveling with Airbnb, and the power of forgivenessCalifornia invests in mental health coaches, Apple Card optimizes purchases, Airbnb rental income, and forgiveness improves happiness

Investing in mental health and wellness for youth is crucial, and California is leading the way by training certified wellness coaches. Meanwhile, making the most of everyday purchases with the Apple Card can help improve your financial situation. During travels, considering the potential of renting out your home on Airbnb can be financially beneficial. The Stoics teach us to embrace life's challenges and bounce back, but holding onto negative emotions from past hurts can negatively impact our well-being. Forgiveness, as practiced in Christianity, can help us move past these emotions and improve our overall happiness. My colleague Miroslav Volf, a theologian, shares his insights on forgiveness in our podcast, Happiness Lessons of the Ancients. My personal experience of forgiveness started at home, and it's a powerful reminder of the transformative impact of this ancient practice.

    • Forgiveness in Christianity: A Journey Towards TranscendenceChristian forgiveness is an infinite act of love and compassion towards the wrongdoer, reflecting God's forgiveness towards us.

Forgiveness is a fundamental aspect of Christian thought, as illustrated in the story of the speaker's brother and the soldiers. Despite the devastating loss of their son, the parents chose to forgive the soldier responsible, seeking to transcend their inner rage and align their character with God's forgiveness. Forgiveness in Christianity is not limited to a certain number of times or dependent on the other person's response. Instead, it's an infinite act of love and compassion towards the wrongdoer, reflecting God's forgiveness towards us. This idea of forgiveness is distinct from popular and philosophical conceptions that may focus on conditional forgiveness or revenge. The parents' journey towards forgiveness was a challenging but ultimately freeing and beautiful experience.

    • Separating the deed from the doer in forgivenessForgiveness is a gift that allows both parties to move on from wrongdoing, freeing the doer from burden and healing the relationship, without condoning or denying the harm caused.

Forgiveness is a gift given by the injured party to the injurer, where the content of forgiveness lies in separating the deed from the doer. This process allows both parties to move on and prevents the wrongdoing from defining their relationship. However, forgiveness is often misunderstood as making everything okay or ignoring the injustice. In reality, forgiveness is necessary in situations where the wrong cannot be undone, and it helps to free the doer from the burden of the deed. Forgiveness may not come naturally, but it can lead to surprising benefits for both parties involved. It's important to recognize that forgiveness is not about condoning the wrongdoing or denying the harm caused, but rather about finding a way to move forward and heal the relationship.

    • Supporting children's wellness and exploring side hustlesCertified wellness coaches help kids, forgiveness improves well-being, Airbnb hosting earns income while traveling

Certified wellness coaches play a crucial role in supporting children and youth by providing preventative and early intervention behavioral health services. Meanwhile, the Apple Card offers cashback rewards on daily purchases. Airbnb hosting can be an excellent way to earn extra income while traveling. Forgiveness, as described by theologian Miroslav Volf, is a gift that improves our well-being and opens new possibilities for healing relationships, especially when we cannot exit from them. It's essential to view forgiveness as not just dealing with internal turmoil but also reconfiguring relationships.

    • The Power of Forgiveness in Healing and Boosting HappinessForgiveness is a voluntary act of self-transcendence that leads to physical and mental health benefits for both parties. It's a gift that can improve relationships and personal well-being.

Forgiveness is a powerful tool for healing and boosting happiness, both for the person giving and receiving it. It's not just about repairing relationships or letting go of anger, but also a voluntary act of self-transcendence that can lead to physical and mental health benefits. Forgiveness is a gift, and giving it can improve our own well-being, making it a win-win situation. This was emphasized in the discussion about the importance of forgiveness in interpersonal relationships and the role it plays in Christian tradition. Forgiveness is not a burden, but rather a way to find strength and beauty in character, even after deep violations. Research suggests that forgiveness can lead to improvements in physical health, such as better sleep and reduced cardiac stress, as well as mental health benefits, including decreases in depression and anger, and increases in positive emotions like hope, compassion, and self-confidence. By focusing on forgiveness, we can turn from injury and focus on living life to the fullest. For my interviewee, forgiveness played a crucial role in helping her family heal after the death of her brother, allowing them to move forward and find peace.

    • Forgiveness leads to growth and healingForgiveness is a complex, ongoing process that benefits both parties, bringing growth, healing, and personal development.

Forgiveness is a complex and ongoing process that brings growth and healing to both parties involved. My mother's experience of forgiving the soldiers who killed her brother led her to recognize the good around her and invest in it, ultimately bringing new growth to her life. Forgiveness benefits not only the person who needs it but also the forgiver, even though it can be difficult. Practical steps towards forgiveness include invoking religious or spiritual traditions for strength and understanding that forgiveness is a gradual, messy process. It's essential to embrace the messiness and accept that forgiveness is a practice rather than a one-time event. While agreement on the wrongdoing and fault may be elusive, focusing on the process of forgiveness can lead to personal growth and healing.

    • Embracing Brokenness and Imperfection in ForgivenessRecognize inherent worth, extend love to self and others, distinguish self from actions, and practice self-forgiveness

Forgiveness, as illustrated in the Christian tradition through the story of the Prodigal Son, is about embracing the brokenness and imperfection of ourselves and others, and recognizing the inherent worth and love that exists beyond our mistakes and suffering. Practicing forgiveness involves distinguishing between our core selves and our actions, and understanding that we are loved unconditionally by God and should extend that love to ourselves and others. A key challenge in forgiveness is extending that forgiveness to ourselves, recognizing that we are deserving of love and redemption despite our imperfections.

    • Embrace forgiveness for healthier relationships and personal growthForgiveness is crucial for improving relationships and mental well-being. It allows us to focus on the essential aspects of those we interact with, transforming emotions and potentially theirs as well. Practicing forgiveness leads to improved feelings and overall happiness, applicable to major traumas and daily hurts.

Forgiveness is essential for healthy and fulfilling relationships, both personally and communally. It allows us to focus on the essential and sacred aspects of those we interact with, transforming our own emotions and potentially, theirs as well. Despite the challenges, practicing forgiveness can lead to improved feelings and overall happiness. The importance of forgiveness extends beyond major traumas and applies to smaller daily hurts and injustices. By recognizing the benefits of forgiveness, we can strive to improve our relationships and mental well-being. Additionally, investing in wellness coaches and focusing on physical and mental health can contribute to overall happiness. San Diego, with its sunny weather, welcoming people, and beautiful scenery, offers an ideal setting for rejuvenation and renewed energy. By embracing forgiveness and prioritizing wellness, we can enhance our happiness and well-being.

Does the You of Today Hate the You of Tomorrow?

We often do things now that will make our lives more difficult or stressful in the future. We spend money, when we should save. We eat junk food, when we should exercise. We agree to commitments, when we should protect our free time. We act so thoughtlessly that it's almost like we hate our future selves.

Dr Laurie asks UCLA's Hal Hershfield to help her find the happiness balance between listening to what she wants now, and the preferences she might have in the future. And she steps into an AI time machine to get some happiness advice for herself decades from today.

She tells Dr Laurie Santos how she decoupled her love of yoga from the corrosive idea of transforming her body - and in the process became an inspirational teacher and author for those who think exercise isn't for them.
