    enApril 11, 2016

    Podcast Summary

    • Discovering the Deceitful Practices of the Food IndustryThe food industry's deceitful practices can lead to unhealthy choices and self-betrayal, emphasizing the importance of being informed and mindful in our food choices.

The food industry can betray our trust, and in the process, we may also betray ourselves. Jasmine Singer, a vegan activist and author, shares her personal journey of discovery on the Rich Roll podcast. The conversation highlights how the food industry's deceitful practices can lead to unhealthy choices and self-betrayal. Rich Roll, the host, emphasizes the importance of reviews and Amazon purchases to help spread the word about the podcast and support the production. The episode is sponsored by On, a high-performance apparel brand, and Go Brewing, a non-alcoholic beer company. The podcast aims to inspire listeners to unlock their best selves through conversations with experts across various fields.

    • Exploring Personal Authenticity in Podcast and MemoirFind and embrace personal authenticity, an ongoing journey towards healing and growth, as showcased in a podcast about food addiction and a memoir by Jasmine Singer.

Go Brewing offers a wide range of delicious, small batch, alcohol-free beers made with natural ingredients, and Voicing Change Media is a new platform featuring thought-provoking content from various shows and publications. Jasmine Singer's memoir, discussed in the podcast, is a courageous and vulnerable exploration of her journey towards personal authenticity and healing from food addiction, eating disorders, and childhood trauma. The common theme in both the podcast and the memoir is the need to find and embrace personal authenticity, which is an ongoing journey rather than a destination. Go Brewing's commitment to natural ingredients and Voicing Change Media's focus on thought-provoking content are examples of authenticity in their respective industries.

    • Food as a coping mechanism leads to addictive behaviorsChildhood experiences and emotional issues can lead to unhealthy relationships with food, which the food industry exploits by creating addictive foods through the use of sugar, salt, and fat.

Food can serve as a coping mechanism for underlying emotional issues, leading to addictive behaviors and unhealthy relationships. Jasmine's story illustrates how she turned to food for comfort during her chaotic home life and bullying experiences in childhood. The food industry, in turn, capitalizes on this vulnerability by creating highly palatable, addictive foods through the use of sugar, salt, and fat. Jasmine's addiction to cheese was particularly challenging to overcome, highlighting the power of these substances on the brain. Her experiences growing up with a mother who struggled with her own body image and weight issues further compounded her own issues. While progress has been made in addressing bullying and body image issues, it's crucial to recognize the root causes of unhealthy eating patterns and address them holistically.

    • Childhood bullying shapes vegan activismBullying experiences led to vegetarianism and later veganism, but denial and emotional coping hindered full commitment until personal growth through yoga.

The experiences of being bullied as a child and struggling with food and weight throughout adolescence and adulthood played a significant role in shaping the activism of this individual, particularly in the area of animal rights. Despite the pervasive bullying, the person found solace in theater and food, which ultimately led to a vegetarian and later vegan lifestyle. However, the journey was not a straightforward one, as the person was deeply in denial about their identity and used food as a coping mechanism to hide from their emotions. It was only when they began to explore their true self through yoga and their own personal journey that they were able to fully embrace their veganism and find purpose in sharing their story.

    • Food as a coping mechanism leading to addictionFood addiction, like other addictions, can lead to harmful consequences and societal stigma, making it difficult for individuals to acknowledge and seek help.

Food can serve as both a source of nourishment and a coping mechanism, often leading to unhealthy relationships and addiction. The speaker's personal experience involved deep misunderstanding and loneliness, as well as misdiagnosis and misuse of medications. They found solace in food, but it ultimately contributed to depression and physical incapacitation. The speaker's grandma was the only one who truly understood them, and it wasn't until later in life that they came to terms with their relationship to food and recognized it as an addiction. The societal stigma around food addiction, as opposed to other addictions, can make it difficult for people to acknowledge and address. However, the consequences of food addiction, such as the obesity epidemic, demonstrate its real and harmful impact.

    • The impact of unhealthy food relationships on self-esteem, shame, and sexualityUnhealthy relationships with food can lead to negative consequences beyond nourishment, including self-esteem issues, shame, and even impacting sexuality. Early experiences with dieting and rebounding can perpetuate this cycle.

An unhealthy relationship with food can lead to negative consequences in various aspects of life, beyond just nourishment. This can include issues with self-esteem, shame, and even sexuality. Many people, including men, may unconsciously begin mindless consumption at a young age, leading to a cycle of dieting and rebounding. The speaker's own experience growing up with weight watchers meals and her brother's college confusion about home-cooked meals illustrates this pattern. Writing about such personal experiences in a book was challenging for the speaker, but ultimately necessary for sharing an honest story.

    • Authentic storytelling and self-discoveryWriting from a place of vulnerability and authenticity can lead to powerful stories. Question societal norms and consider deeper motivations behind practices like dieting.

Writing from a place of vulnerability and authenticity, without the fear of judgment or editing, can lead to powerful and relatable stories. The speaker in this conversation shared her experience of writing her memoir, encouraged by her partner to put her thoughts out there without self-editing. She acknowledges that her memoir is deeply personal, but hopes it resonates with readers beyond her own story. The conversation also touched on the topic of dieting and weight loss, with the speaker expressing her criticism towards consumerist approaches like Weight Watchers. She emphasized the importance of questioning such practices and considering their underlying motivations. Lastly, the speaker reflected on her decision to become a vegetarian and how it was a step towards self-discovery and identity, rather than just a weight loss goal. Overall, the conversation highlights the power of authentic storytelling and the importance of questioning societal norms.

    • Discovering self-love and happiness beyond weight lossSelf-love, self-acceptance, and self-perception are essential for a healthy and fulfilling life, not just weight loss or appearance.

True health and happiness come from self-love and abundance, not just from what we eat or how much we weigh. The author's personal journey from feeling imbalanced and marginalized as a heavier person to being celebrated after losing weight, revealed how society can arbitrarily devalue certain bodies. Her book is not just about weight loss, but finding peace within oneself, and the importance of self-connection and self-perception in leading a healthy lifestyle. The author's experience of being treated differently after losing weight, highlighted the societal issue of casting certain beings aside as less than, which ties in with her activism against animal cruelty and her experiences of bullying as a child. The core message of her book is the importance of self-love, self-acceptance, and self-perception in leading a healthy and fulfilling life.

    • Our experiences of acceptance and rejection shape usUnderstanding the impact of acceptance and rejection on self-perception and societal norms is crucial for self-awareness and empathy.

Our experiences of acceptance and rejection can significantly shape our perception of ourselves and the world around us. The speaker shares how she felt unaccepted in her previous weight and was surprised when people started acknowledging her after losing weight. This new experience brought both satisfaction and resentment, as she realized the perks of "thin privilege" but also became aware of the pernicious aspects of societal norms. The speaker's realization of the impact of her own biases towards others, especially towards those who don't conform to societal expectations, is a constant reminder of the importance of self-awareness and empathy. The speaker's experience resonated with many people, sparking both appreciation and anger. This conversation highlights the complexities of identity, self-perception, and societal norms, and the importance of questioning our own biases and assumptions.

    • Our language towards animals and marginalized communities are linkedThe speaker explores the connection between how we talk about animals and how we treat marginalized communities. She shares her personal experiences and emphasizes the importance of reexamining our language as society recognizes animal rights as a social justice issue.

Our treatment of animals and the language we use to describe them are deeply connected to how we treat marginalized communities. The speaker shared a personal story about her pit bull being blamed and misunderstood, which she related to the experiences of farmed animals. She also discussed the current cultural climate of hyper political correctness and the importance of examining and reexamining the language we use. The speaker believes that society is shifting towards recognizing animal rights as a social justice issue, drawing parallels to the LGBTQ movement. She also highlighted the rapid growth of veganism in Israel as an exciting development. Ultimately, the speaker emphasizes that our treatment of animals and other marginalized groups is rooted in the belief that some lives matter more than others, and that this mentality is unsustainable and unjustifiable. As we progress and develop new technologies around food, it becomes less and less defensible to exploit and consume animal products.

    • Beyond diet: Veganism as self-careVeganism is about prioritizing health, examining consumption habits, and practicing self-care to maximize impact for personal well-being and social justice.

Veganism goes beyond just a diet for weight loss or animal rights; it's about self-care and prioritizing one's health. The speaker's grandmother, who became vegan at an older age, saw it as a social justice issue. Vegan alternatives to animal products have come a long way, but it's essential to be mindful of overconsumption and making healthy choices. The speaker's personal experience shows that even long-term vegans can fall into unhealthy habits. The turning point was when she was diagnosed with potential heart disease at 30 and realized she needed to prioritize self-care beyond vegan junk food. It's crucial to examine consumption habits, identity, and prioritize self-care to maximize one's ability to help others and the causes they're passionate about.

    • A documentary sparks self-examination and diet transformationA compelling documentary can inspire introspection and lead to significant lifestyle changes, including adopting a healthier diet.

The speaker's compulsive eating behavior, which she did in isolation and shame, was similar to an addict's relationship with their substance. This pattern started in childhood due to bullying and continued into adulthood. The turning point came when she was given a documentary about a man who healed himself through juicing and consuming whole foods. She tried a 10-day juice fast and for the first time, examined her compulsion towards overeating. This experience led her to crave healthy foods and adopt a mostly whole foods-based diet, which she followed for several years and resulted in significant weight loss. The documentary "Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead" served as a catalyst for her transformation.

    • Personal transformation through introspection and self-careAcknowledge vulnerabilities, prioritize self-care, and recognize the importance of mental reboot for overall well-being.

Personal transformation, whether it's through a specific diet or lifestyle change, requires introspection and a commitment to prioritizing self-care. The speaker shares her experience of losing over 100 pounds through the Join the Reboot program and Eat to Live, which led to her appearing in a national commercial. She emphasizes the importance of acknowledging and addressing one's vulnerabilities and weaknesses, rather than hiding them. The speaker also highlights the complexity of maintaining long-term change, as shown in the sequel to "Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead," where the protagonist Phil relapses. She reflects on how juicing, for her, goes beyond physical health benefits to serve as a mental reboot, allowing her to analyze and improve various aspects of her life. Ultimately, the speaker encourages recognizing the importance of self-care and prioritizing it, even if it means going against societal norms.

    • Exploring Extremes for Personal GrowthEmbracing extremes can lead to personal growth and new experiences, but it's important not to stay out of balance for too long and recognize the value in both dark and light moments.

Embracing extremes and allowing ourselves to be out of balance at times can lead to personal growth and new experiences. Jasmine shares her own journey of using extreme measures like juicing and silent retreats to shake up her routine and discover what truly works for her. She also emphasizes the importance of not staying out of balance for too long and recognizing that even the dark moments in our lives can define our character and reveal valuable insights about ourselves. Writing a memoir, as Jasmine experienced, can be a process of turning over rocks and continuing to learn more about oneself as the story is shared with others.

    • From personal growth to advocacy through memoir writingWriting a memoir can lead to self-discovery, personal growth, and advocacy for causes like animal rights and plant-based diets.

Writing a memoir can be a therapeutic and revealing experience, helping individuals identify patterns and themes in their lives. However, it may not be a cathartic experience as the memories remain constant. The memoir can also serve as a powerful tool for advocacy, reaching a wider audience and encouraging change, such as adopting a plant-based diet for personal growth and animal welfare. The author's journey to self-love and activism began with an internal transformation, leading to external changes like weight loss. Through her book, she is able to connect with a broader audience, including those who may not be directly involved in animal rights activism. Ultimately, the memoir serves as a means to inspire readers to seek a more authentic and compassionate version of themselves.

    • Personal experiences shape advocacyWitnessing animal exploitation reminded the speaker of her own experiences, challenging her beliefs and leading to authentic, effective advocacy. Growth and self-awareness are not always easy but worth it.

Personal experiences can significantly shift one's perspective and advocacy. The speaker shares how witnessing animal exploitation in the dairy and egg industries brought back memories of her own experiences of being exploited, leading her to question her feminist beliefs and reevaluate her consumption habits. This journey transformed her advocacy and opened doors to new perspectives, making her advocacy more authentic and effective. The speaker also emphasizes that this process of growth and self-awareness is not always easy, but it's worth it. The Our Hen House organization, which includes podcasts on animal rights, animal law, and vegan cooking, is an example of how the speaker's personal growth and advocacy have come together to reach and educate various communities.

    • Embracing imperfections and sharing storiesRecognizing we're not alone and embracing imperfections can lead to healing and connection, challenging societal pressures to appear perfect.

Sharing our vulnerabilities and owning our stories, despite societal pressures to appear perfect, can be incredibly powerful and connect us with others. The author's experience of writing her book and the reactions she received from readers showed her that many people resonated with her feelings of being "always too much and never enough." By embracing our imperfections and being compassionate towards ourselves, we can begin to heal and find comfort in our shared humanity. The author's book, like the podcast discussed, highlights the importance of self-reflection and self-care, challenging the unrealistic standards of social media and encouraging a focus on the inside rather than the outside. For those struggling, the author suggests starting by recognizing that they are not alone and beginning to explore the things they love to do.

    • Focus on joy and find inspiration in tough timesFind joy in life's challenges, take breaks when needed, and cope through activism or creativity

No matter how difficult life may seem, it's important to focus on the things that bring joy and make your heart sing. These positive experiences can help you get through tough times and even inspire you to help others. As author Jasmine Singer shared, even when she was struggling as a teenager, she knew deep down that her story would be told. And now, she's using her experiences to make a difference in the world. Another important message is that it's okay to take a break from things that aren't working in your life, even if it's hard. As Jasmine mentioned, it can be compared to walking across hot coals, but others have done it and survived. And finally, it's essential to find ways to cope with challenges, such as through activism or creative pursuits. Jasmine's memoir, "Always Too Much and Never Enough," is a powerful reminder of these lessons and offers hope and inspiration for anyone going through a difficult time. Episode 6 - Reframing Selfish Series - From Self-Sacrifice to Self-Care

The SHIFT Podcast - Episode 6 - Reframing Selfish Series - From Self-Sacrifice to Self-Care

We began this conversation in our last episode, with conversation unfolding to shine light on how as a society, we have made it more acceptable to opt in to self-abandonment over self-love.

We are continuing to reframe the concept of “Selfish” and to strip away the negative nuance around the idea of making our well-being and proactive self-care a priority.

This week we have a special guest co-host filling in for Diane while she plays out in the wilderness - talk about the ultimate self-care!

Dr. Brook Sheehan DC joins Trish in the co-host chair for Episode 6 to continue this conversation, offering us a fresh perspective on self-care in the context of both motherhood and her work as “The Body Whisperer”, and how our body is constantly communicating with us to let us know what it needs.

Dr. Brook is a Chiropractor Extraordinaire who speaks the language of the body (as opposed to body language), and helps her patients by taking the guesswork out of health by helping them discover what their body is seeking to do its work. Dr. Brook also hosts her own podcast called “The Body Talks” Podcast, also airing on the Transformation Talk Radio Network as part of our “World’s Best” Network of Collaborators - The Kornelia Stephanie Media Group.

On this episode we’ll dive deeper into the self-care component by discussing:

    • Some of the lifestyle barriers to self-care and the choices we have in navigating those
    • Why it is important to start being proactive in our self-care practice and stop sacrificing our well-being
    • Our bodies speak to us - are we listening? Fine-tuning our Mind-Body-Spirit health
    • Sharing our stories and strategies to reclaim the top spot on our own priority list

We have everything we need inside of us already, and within reach if we take action to tune in. Integrating self-care as part of our regular routine is not only self-empowering, it benefits everyone around us as well.

This conversation is both expansive and fluid in direction as our world is in constant change.

Deconstructing the definition of “selfish” is a cultural shift that begins with us individually.

THe SHIFT begins and ends with us so please join us for this important conversation.

    Let’s do this together!
