How zombies, dragons, and superheroes could make you a better person (with Christopher Robichaud)

    en-usMay 17, 2021

    Podcast Summary

    • Exploring personal growth through socialization, imagination, and problem-solving activitiesEngaging in activities that promote socialization, imagination, problem-solving, and ethical thinking, like playing Dungeons and Dragons, can significantly contribute to personal growth and development as a better human being.

Engaging in activities that promote socialization, imagination, problem-solving, and ethical thinking, such as playing Dungeons and Dragons, can significantly contribute to personal growth and development as a better human being. Christopher Robichaux, a philosophy professor, emphasizes the importance of these traits, which he learned from his experience of playing Dungeons and Dragons, and has made a career out of teaching ethics and philosophy using pop culture. His unique approach to making complex ethical concepts accessible through play and imagination offers valuable insights into the intersection of ethics and everyday life. So, whether it's through playing games, watching movies, or reading books, finding activities that challenge us and allow us to explore different perspectives can lead to lasting life lessons.

    • An invitation to reflect on values and principles in complex situationsEthics is a continuous process of questioning and reflection, essential for personal growth and functioning society

Ethics is not a simple list of do's and don'ts, but rather an invitation to reflect on our values and principles in complex situations where reasonable people may disagree. Ethics is essential for functioning society and personal growth, and its relevance is not limited to academic discussions. Current real-life issues, such as balancing public health and individual liberty during a pandemic, demonstrate the practicality and urgency of ethical reasoning. Philosophical thought experiments, like the trolley problem, can sometimes become real-life scenarios, requiring us to think deeply about our moral dilemmas and the underlying principles guiding our decisions. Ethics is a continuous process of questioning and reflection, essential for making sense of ourselves and the world around us.

    • Exploring Ethics Through Pop CultureUsing pop culture as a tool, we can stimulate thought and reflection, develop problem-solving skills, and enhance empathy through moral simulations.

Curiosity and self-examination are essential virtues that can enrich our lives and help us make better decisions. While we cannot scrutinize every decision we make, we can train ourselves to think critically by using pop culture as a tool. Superhero stories, for instance, offer valuable ethical lessons that can stimulate thought and reflection. Additionally, engaging in moral simulations, such as the zombie apocalypse scenario, can help us develop problem-solving skills and empathy in a safe and entertaining environment. Ultimately, by being curious and examining our beliefs, we can better navigate the complex ethical challenges we face in our daily lives.

    • Using Dungeons and Dragons for Ethical DilemmasDungeons and Dragons-style simulations offer a safe and engaging way to explore ethical dilemmas, allowing individuals to reflect on their own choices and learn from the consequences.

The use of engaging and immersive experiences, like those found in Dungeons and Dragons, can help individuals grapple with real-life ethical dilemmas in a safe and fun environment. The creator of a zombie-themed ethics simulation was inspired by his past experiences with Dungeons and Dragons and saw the potential for using this fictional arena to help people make difficult decisions and learn from the consequences. By putting individuals in the driver's seat, they can gain a deeper understanding of moral reasoning and the complexities of ethical decision-making. This approach allows people to reflect on their own choices and learn from them, rather than just judging others from a distance. The simulation provides a unique and effective way to explore ethical dilemmas and encourages empathy and self-reflection.

    • Media shapes our thinking and moral judgmentMedia influences our perspectives and ethical choices, reflecting societal concerns and anxieties

Our consumption of media, be it games, movies, or other forms of entertainment, shapes the way we think about the world and influences our moral judgment. It's not just a form of escapism, but a reflection of our concerns and anxieties. For instance, the ongoing theme of polarization in society was mirrored in the tentpole movies of Marvel Civil War and Batman vs. Superman, where heroes were pitted against each other. These stories, despite their larger-than-life stakes, carry deeper questions that resonate with us. Moreover, Marvel is starting to explore the idea that villains are not inherently evil due to their goals but rather the means to achieve them. This is a reminder that our ethics should guide us in our pursuit of goals, not just the goals themselves. As a creator, I believe that art cannot be separated from its context, and it either embraces or pushes against the cultural zeitgeist. The Marvel movies, for instance, took off during heavy times in American history, and their themes reflected the societal mood.

    • Superhero movies reflect societal needs and issuesSuperhero stories tackle contemporary issues, from morale boosters to complex themes like power, surveillance, and morality

Superhero movies have reflected societal needs and issues throughout their history. The early Spider-Man films brought people together and lifted morale during challenging times. Later movies, like "The Dark Knight," tackled complex themes like power, surveillance, and morality. Superhero stories have always addressed politics, even from their earliest origins. While opinions may differ on which superhero is the best, the genre's ability to tackle contemporary issues remains a constant. Rorschach from Watchmen might be the most likely character to fall into online conspiracy theories due to his distrust of society and obsession with justice.

    • Experiential learning in allergy relief and ethics educationClaritin D provides quick allergy relief, while Christopher Robichaux advocates for experiential learning in ethics education using simulations to enhance traditional methods

Claritin D offers fast and effective allergy relief without the need for a prescription, allowing individuals to live their lives "Claritin clear." Meanwhile, in the realm of education, Christopher Robichaux emphasizes the importance of experiential learning, drawing inspiration from Dungeons and Dragons. Traditional ethics pedagogy often involves a back-and-forth between theory and cases, but Robichaux argues for the inclusion of simulations to provide students with valuable insights into their moral character. He believes that serious learning doesn't have to exclude play and that incorporating imaginative elements can lead to more effective and engaging educational experiences.

    • Exploring Personal Power Through StorytellingThrough storytelling, we learn moral lessons and discover inner power. Parents and individuals can create safe spaces for exploration. Recognize the importance of arts in reflecting on important matters.

We navigate the world through various forms of storytelling, including metaphors, analogies, allegories, and fiction. These stories help us learn moral lessons and discover our inner power. Parents and individuals can apply this concept by creating a safe space for exploring personal power and helping others do the same. It's essential to recognize the importance of the arts, whether it's popular culture or highbrow literature, in helping us reflect on important matters. The recent focus on moral philosophy and ethics in popular culture might be due to a universal craving for understanding these concepts. By engaging with various forms of storytelling, we can gain new perspectives and find the strength to overcome challenges.

    • Exploring Ethics Through Shared Experiences and ConversationsEngage in meaningful conversations about ethical beliefs and values, even when they differ, through shared experiences like superhero stories. Practice forgiveness and extend grace to oneself and others during challenging times.

As our society becomes more open and vulnerable, it's essential to engage in meaningful conversations about ethical beliefs and values, even when they differ. These discussions can be facilitated through shared experiences, such as superhero stories, and can lead to productive outcomes. Additionally, technological advances have made the consequences of individual actions more visible, emphasizing the practical nature of moral philosophy and ethics. The guest emphasized the importance of practicing forgiveness and extending grace to oneself and others during challenging times. Overall, the conversation highlighted the significance of reason, conversation, and community in navigating complex ethical issues.

    • Exploring Mindfulness and Emotional IntelligencePrioritize mindfulness, emotional intelligence, continuous learning, and effective tools for personal and professional growth.

We learned about the importance of mindfulness and emotional intelligence in becoming better humans. Our guest, Christopher Robichaux, shared his experiences and insights on how practicing mindfulness and emotional intelligence can lead to better relationships, improved communication, and increased overall well-being. He emphasized the need to be present in the moment, to listen actively, and to respond with empathy and compassion. Additionally, we were reminded of the importance of continuous learning and personal growth. The team behind How to Be a Better Human, including our dungeon master Abhimanyu Das, 15th level paladin Daniela Balarezo, undead zombie Frederica Elizabeth Josephov, and trolley operator Kara Newman, worked hard to bring us another insightful episode. Lastly, we heard about the practical benefits of using business software like Odoo and collaboration tools like Slack to streamline operations and save time. Odoo offers an affordable, all-in-one management solution, while Slack provides a centralized platform for work communication and automation. So, in summary, the key takeaway is to prioritize mindfulness, emotional intelligence, continuous learning, and the use of effective tools to enhance both personal and professional growth.
