Jocko Underground: You Are The Average Of The People You Hang Around With - Jocko's Take | Are Some Dreams Just Impossible for "Quitters"?

    enNovember 01, 2022

    Podcast Summary

    • You are the average of the people and media you surround yourself withBe mindful of the company and media that shape your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and eliminate negative influences to create a positive and productive environment for personal growth.

The people we surround ourselves with and the media we consume have a significant impact on our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. The expression "you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with" highlights this idea, as we often adopt the characteristics and attitudes of those around us. However, it's not just about who we hang out with, but also what we allow into our minds. Music, movies, social media, and other forms of media can influence us in various ways, from reducing anxiety to encouraging aggressive thoughts. Therefore, it's essential to be mindful of the inputs we accept and the company we keep, as they shape our inner world and ultimately, our outer reality. So, be selective and eliminate the negative influences to create a positive and productive environment for personal growth.

    • Be mindful of media consumptionMindfully consume media, pay attention to messages, and approach it with a questioning eye to limit negative impact.

We should be mindful of the media we consume and the messages they convey. Music and social media can have a significant impact on our thoughts and beliefs, especially when we're not paying attention. It's essential to increase the volume of constructive and pragmatic input and limit the volume of negative and harmful messages. Even if we enjoy music or social media with negative messages, as long as we're aware of it, we'll be okay. However, if we're not paying attention, it can catch us off guard and potentially influence us negatively. The algorithms that power social media platforms are designed to give us short-term gratification and keep us in echo chambers. Therefore, it's crucial to approach media with a questioning eye and be aware of the potential impact it can have on our thoughts and beliefs. For instance, a favorite band like Black Sabbath, even with a song like Suicide Solution, can still have a positive impact if we're aware of the message behind the lyrics. In summary, be mindful of the media you consume, pay attention to the messages, and approach it with a questioning eye.

    • Rumors of hidden messages in classic rockRumors of backmasked messages in songs from bands like The Beatles and Ozzy Osbourne fueled excitement and intrigue, despite being largely unfounded.

Backmasking, the practice of playing recordings backwards to conceal hidden messages, was a popular rumor during the days of classic rock bands like The Beatles and Ozzy Osbourne. The Beatles were reportedly known to have hidden messages in their songs, such as "Paul is dead." Ozzy, on the other hand, was rumored to have engaged in devil worship and even bit the head off a bat during a concert. These rumors, while not entirely true, added to the mystique and excitement surrounding these iconic musicians. Black Sabbath, featuring Ozzy, is considered one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time, with their first five albums being particularly noteworthy. The practice of backmasking was also a premise in movies like "The Gate," which added to the fascination with the hidden and the unknown.

    • The impact of people and information on personal growthSurround yourself with positive influences and critically evaluate information to promote personal growth and success.

The people we surround ourselves with and the information we consume significantly impact our lives. The quality of an artist's body of work is a good analogy for this concept. Just as not every album an artist produces is a masterpiece, not everyone we meet or ideas we encounter will be beneficial. However, consistently producing great work or being surrounded by positive influences is a challenging feat that not many achieve. Furthermore, our networks and the people we associate with can greatly influence our net worth, both financially and in terms of personal growth. Surrounding ourselves with successful individuals can inspire us and provide opportunities, while being around negative influences can hold us back. Additionally, be cautious of the information we consume and the algorithms that feed us content. It's easy to get sucked into following certain individuals or ideas, leading us to agree with everything they say without questioning it. It's essential to remain critical and not blindly accept everything we're exposed to. In essence, be mindful of who and what we let into our lives, as it can significantly impact our personal growth and success.

    • Jocko Podcast Launches Subscription-Based Platform - Jocko UndergroundJocko Podcast introduces Jocko Underground, a subscription-based platform for more interaction, better communication, and control over content. It costs $8.18/month, with assistance for those in need.

Music and spoken word, like the popular album "Psychological Warfare," have the power to influence our thoughts and actions significantly. This influence is akin to psychological warfare, as it goes directly into our brains without the need for conversion. However, it's essential to be mindful of external platforms and their potential control over the content we consume. To mitigate this reliance and strengthen the connection with like-minded individuals, Jocko Podcast is launching Jocko Underground, a subscription-based platform. This platform aims to provide more interaction, better communication, and support for the Jocko podcast while reducing the reliance on external sponsors. Jocko Underground costs $8.18 a month, but assistance is available for those who cannot afford it. The goal is to build a stronger community and provide more control over the content consumed.

Learn How to Think, with Andy Frisella - MFCEO148

We live in a society that has produced very soft, very delicate little snowflakes. An entitlement complex is running through the current generation. They think they should be handed the good things that come from a life of hard work--without actually working for them! But one of the worst qualities of so many people today is that they want to know what to think. They haven't learned how to think. That is an indispensable requirement for becoming successful.
