Rich also shared his daily routine, which includes getting up early for dialysis and tweeting out his playlist to stay relevant as an athlete and author. The power of social media was emphasized as the reason he was asked to write his book.

    • The Power of Social Media and Authentic StorytellingSocial media connects people despite differences, and authentic storytelling through vulnerability and raw emotion resonates with readers, leading to opportunities like book deals.

Twitter has become an unexpected yet powerful tool for connecting people, even those from different age groups and backgrounds. This was evident in the story of a fighter who found success through the platform, leading to a book deal with HarperCollins. The fighter's raw and honest writing style resonated with readers, allowing them to emotionally connect with his life story despite their differences. When writing his book, the fighter understood the value of being vulnerable and sharing personal experiences, which helped readers feel closer to him. The importance of honesty and raw emotion in storytelling is a universal concept, whether one is a world champion athlete or not. The opening of the fighter's book, which involves a helicopter crash during his childhood, sets the stage for an emotionally engaging and cinematic reading experience. Overall, the story highlights the power of social media in bringing people together and the value of authentic storytelling.

    • A harsh upbringing instilled resilienceDespite a tough childhood marked by emotional distance and harsh discipline, the speaker acknowledges that these experiences shaped them into a resilient individual

The speaker's upbringing, marked by a lack of emotional connection and harsh discipline, shaped their perspective of the world as a harsh and unforgiving place. Their father, a former professional athlete, believed in preparing them for the tough realities of life through tough love and emotional distance. This upbringing left emotional and physical scars but also instilled resilience and prepared the speaker for the challenges they would face in life. The speaker's father's ideology can be likened to the Johnny Cash song "A Boy Named Sue," where difficult experiences make one inherently tough. While the speaker may not have wanted this upbringing as a child, in hindsight, they recognize that it played a significant role in shaping who they became.

    • First NBA game disrupted by hockey, player's career derailed by rival leagueThe first NBA game faced unexpected disruptions from hockey, and one player's career was derailed by a rival league, but his passion for sports and supportive mentors left a lasting impact.

The first NBA game took place on an unexpected date due to hockey interferences. The very first game, played between Toronto Huskies and New York Knicks on November 1, 1946, was moved due to a hockey game scheduled at Toronto Gardens. However, the player's career was short-lived as he jumped to a rival league in 1947, only to have it fold and leave him blackballed by the NBA. The player's past, including an injury during World War 2 and harsh treatment due to his race, likely contributed to his bitterness and determination. His father, an influential figure, and various mentors helped shape him into a talented athlete, excelling in baseball and basketball while training in boxing and kickboxing. Despite facing adversity, the player's passion for sports and the connections he made along the way left a lasting impact.

    • Young boy's experiences with Steelers instilled work ethic and athletic dreamsObserving Hall of Famers and training with them as a young boy fueled the speaker's passion for athletics and instilled a strong work ethic

The speaker's experiences as a young boy working for the Pittsburgh Steelers during their heyday instilled in him a strong work ethic and a desire to excel as an athlete. He was influenced by the legendary football players he encountered, many of whom were Hall of Famers, and was allowed to train with them. The speaker's father's ideology also played a role in shaping his approach to athletics. The speaker was surrounded by professional athletes from a young age, as his godfather was an equipment manager for the Steelers and his father was also a professional athlete. This environment fueled the speaker's dream of becoming a professional athlete himself. The speaker was particularly inspired by the work ethic and conditioning of the players, which he observed firsthand and sought to emulate. This experience laid the foundation for his later career in strength and conditioning.

    • Determined to Pursue Passions Despite Health ChallengesFaced significant health challenges but refused to let them define him, received guidance from sports legends, and embraced challenges to become a successful high school baseball player and boxer.

Despite facing significant health challenges from a young age, including type 1 diabetes and a congenital heart defect, the speaker was determined to pursue his passions in sports and never let his conditions hold him back. He received valuable guidance from baseball greats like Billy Williams, Barry Bonds, and Andre Dawson, and his father's encouragement to challenge authority and not be afraid of the impossible helped shape his mindset. The speaker's resilience and determination led him to become a prominent high school baseball player, and he faced a difficult decision between pursuing a professional baseball career and his newfound love for boxing. Throughout it all, he refused to let his conditions define him and instead embraced the challenges they presented.

    • Teenage passion for kickboxing leads to tough decisionDespite baseball prospects, speaker chose kickboxing due to personal passion and growing sport popularity

The speaker's passion for kickboxing grew during his teenage years, leading him to make the difficult decision to leave baseball behind. He was drawn to the sport due to limited opportunities for training in his area and the excitement of seeing it on television. The speaker's love for kicks and the fact that it was an American sport at the time further fueled his interest. Despite having baseball scholarships and prospects, he was experiencing burnout and shoulder problems. The medical approach at the time was to numb the pain with cortisone shots, but this didn't address the root cause of the issue. The speaker's mindset was to push through the pain, leading him to ultimately choose kickboxing over baseball. This decision was influenced by the growing popularity of the sport and the inspiration he saw from American fighters.

    • From team sports to individual pursuitAthletes may seek self-reliance and emotional exploration through transitioning from team sports to individual pursuits, driven by personal desires and a rebellion against societal expectations.

The decision to transition from a team sport like baseball to an individual sport like fighting was driven by a desire for self-reliance and emotional exploration, rather than burnout on the sport itself. The speaker's background of being an athletically gifted individual who wanted to excel in every sport contributed to this decision, as well as a sense of rebellion against his father's dreams of him playing Major League Baseball. The extreme difference between baseball and fighting, and the unusual nature of making such a transition, highlights the speaker's athletic ability and competitive spirit.

    • Exploring self-actualization and anger release in combat sportsSelf-actualization can lead to anger release, but not all fighters see themselves as violent. It's essential to avoid perpetuating negative stereotypes and focus on personal growth and resilience in combat sports.

Self-actualization and the turning of tables in a person's life can lead to the release of pent-up anger and resentment. This can manifest in various ways, including through athletic pursuits such as fighting. However, it's important to note that not all fighters think of themselves as "ass kickers" or view their profession in a savage or violent light. In fact, many fighters are grounded and mellow individuals when met outside of the ring or cage. It's crucial to avoid marketing combat sports in a way that perpetuates negative stereotypes, as it can harm the sport and the individuals involved. Instead, we should focus on the personal growth and resilience that comes with overcoming challenges and working through emotional struggles.

    • From Fighter to Athlete: The Evolution of PerceptionBeing a fighter goes beyond physical strength; it's about using skills responsibly and viewing oneself as an athlete, not just a tough guy.

Being a professional fighter involves more than just physical strength and skills. It carries a responsibility to use those skills appropriately and not let the public perception of being a tough guy define who you are. The speaker shares his experience of starting his kickboxing career, training seriously, and getting noticed by promoters, leading to a promising career path. However, he also faced mental challenges and the unfortunate death of a fellow fighter, which made him question the sport's direction. Ultimately, he sees himself as an athlete, not a tough guy, and encourages others to view fighters in the same light.

    • Struggling with mental blocks and personal issues in Japan's combat sports sceneDespite personal struggles and mental blocks, a fighter remained determined to seize an opportunity to compete in Thailand's largest combat sports organization.

The pressure to perform in Japan's combat sports scene, combined with personal mental struggles, nearly derailed the career of a promising fighter. The fighter, who had issues getting over losses, found himself overshadowed by fanatical fandom for larger fighters. This mental block, along with his own personal issues, caused him to focus on minor setbacks, leading to self-created mind games. Around 2006, he received an offer to compete in Thailand's largest combat sports organization, which presented a significant opportunity. However, during preparations, he experienced back issues and returned to the US for medical attention. Despite the setback, he remained determined to seize this opportunity, but his past struggles continued to pose challenges.

    • Ignoring Medical Advice Can Lead to Dire ConsequencesListening to medical professionals and prioritizing health over personal goals is crucial for individuals with pre-existing conditions.

Even with a preexisting condition, individuals may feel compelled to push through and ignore medical advice, but the consequences could be severe. The speaker in this discussion, despite having a known heart condition, continued to train for a fight and ignored doctors' recommendations for surgery. This led to a worsening of his condition, and only when he was forced to face the reality of his situation did he agree to undergo a life-saving procedure. This story underscores the importance of listening to medical professionals and prioritizing health over personal goals. Ignoring medical advice, even with the best intentions, can lead to dire consequences.

    • Heart valve replacement: The athlete's choiceAthlete's opt for pig valves for quicker recovery but face need for another surgery in 15-20 years. Life's challenges teach resilience and adaptability.

During a heart valve replacement surgery, athletes are often given the option of a pig valve over a mechanical or cadaver valve due to their ability to return to competitive sports. However, this choice comes with the trade-off of requiring another surgery within 15 to 20 years. The patient in this discussion opted for the pig valve and was able to return to training sooner than expected, but faced additional challenges such as the passing of both parents and the death of a troubled older brother. Despite these hardships, the patient was relieved that their parents had passed before their brother's overdose. Overall, the experience taught the patient the importance of resilience and adaptability in the face of adversity.

    • The complexities of addiction: beyond simple labelsAddiction involves manipulation and a deep struggle for those affected to overcome it, showing the complexities beyond simple labels.

Addiction is a complex issue that goes beyond simple labels. The speaker looked up to his older brother as a hero and a rebel, but his brother's addiction led to a downward spiral that was sad and frustrating for the speaker. Despite his brother's cool demeanor and rebellious nature, he was deeply flawed and unable to get sober despite attempts. The speaker's brother was skilled at manipulating people, even when they saw through his lies. The speaker's experience shows that addiction is not just about taking from others or being a scam artist, but also about the depths of manipulation and the struggle for those who are addicted to get better for themselves. The speaker's brother's death was a reminder of the destructive power of addiction and the importance of empathy and understanding for those struggling with it.

    • Experiencing loss and grief can lead to self-destructive behaviorsAcknowledging and addressing grief and loss is important to prevent self-destructive behaviors rather than trying to numb the pain

Loss and grief can lead individuals into self-destructive behaviors as a way to cope with pain and confusion. The speaker's experience of losing his brother, father, and undergoing heart surgery within a short period of time left him feeling lost and alone, leading him to turn to alcohol and other self-destructive habits. He describes a cycle of denial and false pride, where he believed he could handle the challenges in his life despite his self-destructive behaviors. However, eventually, the bottom fell out, and he realized the importance of acknowledging and addressing his pain rather than trying to numb it with destructive habits. The experience also led him to move around frequently, trying to find a new place to start fresh and get his life back on track. Ultimately, the speaker's story highlights the importance of acknowledging and addressing grief and loss rather than trying to numb the pain with destructive behaviors.

    • From Depths of Addiction to RecoveryEven in the grip of addiction, the choice to seek help and make positive changes can lead to recovery. Addiction is not just about substances, but about behaviors and mindset.

Even in the depths of addiction, there's always a chance for change. The speaker's story illustrates how seemingly small decisions can lead to a downward spiral, but also how encountering the right people and experiences can help lead to recovery. Whether it's getting off an elevator, surviving a car crash, or hitting rock bottom in Los Angeles, the choice to seek help and make positive changes is ultimately what matters most. The speaker's experience shows that addiction is not just about substances, but about the behaviors and mindset that come with it. By recognizing the need for change and taking action, it's possible to turn things around and live a healthier, more fulfilling life.

    • Struggling with addiction is a lifelong commitmentRecognizing addiction as a complex issue and committing to ongoing support and self-reflection are crucial for maintaining recovery.

Addiction is a deeply ingrained personality trait that requires ongoing effort to manage. Recovery is not a cure, but a lifelong commitment. The speaker, who had struggled with addiction and substance abuse for years, found success through a combination of therapy, support groups, and discipline. However, even after achieving sobriety, the temptation to return to old habits surfaced years later, leading him to consider a risky comeback to professional fighting. Despite the challenges, he ultimately decided against it, recognizing that the personal growth and self-awareness he had gained were more valuable than any external validation or thrill. The speaker's experience underscores the importance of recognizing addiction as a complex and ongoing issue, and the need for ongoing support and self-reflection to maintain recovery.

    • Returning to the ring after a long hiatusExperiencing success in competitive fields demands dedication, hard work, and being fully prepared. Neglecting training and game planning can lead to defeat.

Experience and preparation are crucial in achieving success in any competitive field, especially in combat sports. The speaker, a kickboxer, shared his experience of returning to the ring after a long hiatus and facing a top opponent in Moscow. He was eager to prove himself again but failed to execute his game plan due to a lack of recent fighting experience and proper training. The speaker learned the hard way that taking on top opponents without being fully prepared and in top form can lead to defeat. He also mentioned the challenges of dealing with shady characters in the sports industry and the importance of trusting one's instincts and staying true to one's strengths. Overall, the speaker's experience serves as a reminder that success in any competitive arena requires dedication, hard work, and a clear understanding of one's strengths and weaknesses.

    • A fighter's health crisis during career milestoneUnpredictability of life underscores importance of prioritizing health over career opportunities, and having proper insurance coverage is crucial.

Despite achieving a major career milestone by getting signed by a prestigious fight team and being offered a fight at Madison Square Garden, the fighter's health took a turn for the worse with a case of pneumonia leading to kidney failure. The experience served as a reminder of the unpredictability of life and the importance of prioritizing health over career opportunities. The fighter's lack of insurance during this critical time added to the challenges he faced. Despite the setbacks, the fighter chose to move forward and focus on his recovery. The incident also highlighted the need for proper medical attention and accurate diagnosis, emphasizing the importance of being informed and advocating for one's own health.

    • Misdiagnosis of Acute Kidney Injury Leads to Chain Reaction of TransplantsProper diagnosis and timely treatment are crucial to prevent unnecessary health complications and potential need for multiple transplants.

A misdiagnosis and delayed treatment of an acute kidney injury led to a chain reaction of health complications for an individual with Type 1 diabetes. This included the need for a kidney transplant, followed by a pancreas transplant, and eventually a heart transplant. The initial misdiagnosis assumed the individual was suffering from chronic renal failure, leading to unnecessary hospitalization and dialysis. However, further investigation revealed that the kidney injury was acute, caused by a combination of pneumonia and medications. The individual's good care of their Type 1 diabetes made them a good candidate for a pancreas transplant, which would help the kidney function better and potentially eliminate the need for insulin injections. Despite the positive outcome of the kidney transplant, the individual still faces the need for heart and pancreas transplants due to the initial misdiagnosis and subsequent health complications. This case highlights the importance of proper diagnosis and timely treatment in preventing unnecessary health complications.

    • Struggling with Multiple Health Issues and High Medical CostsDespite Medicare coverage for some expenses, severe health conditions like end-stage renal disease and heart issues come with significant medical costs and financial burdens. Organ donation and live donors can be lifesavers, but the process and costs can be challenging.

A series of events, including an infection and certain medications, led to chronic renal failure and heart issues for the speaker. They are currently on the organ donor list for three organs, including a kidney, and have a live donor in the process of testing. The high cost of their medications, totaling $2,000 a month, and their preexisting conditions make obtaining affordable insurance a challenge. However, they were able to secure Medicare coverage due to their end-stage renal disease. Although Medicare covers some expenses, it does not cover a heart transplant, leaving the speaker with significant medical costs. A GoFundMe campaign was previously set up, but it is no longer active as the speaker's partner found a well-paying job. The story highlights the challenges and financial burdens that come with severe health conditions and the importance of organ donation and live donors.

    • Overcoming Challenges with PositivityDespite personal and health struggles, staying positive and focused on the present can help individuals prepare for major life events and overcome challenges.

Despite facing numerous health and personal challenges, including kidney failure and a difficult upbringing, the interviewee maintains a positive outlook and approaches each obstacle with determination and optimism. He focuses on the present moment, follows medical guidelines, and finds meaning in being of service to others. Through this mindset, he treats his current situation as a preparation for a fight, striving to be in the best shape possible for a kidney transplant. His mantra, "it could always be worse," provides perspective and helps him stay grounded in the present.

    • Finding peace amidst challenges through control and acceptanceFocus on what you can control, accept the rest, find solace in relationships, personal achievements, and upcoming opportunities, stay grounded in service, and use distractions to cope with fear and uncertainty.

Finding serenity during challenging times involves focusing on the aspects of your life that you can control, while accepting the things beyond your control. The speaker shares his experience of going through a life-threatening condition and finding solace in his relationships, personal achievements, and upcoming opportunities. He emphasizes the importance of staying grounded in service and using distractions to help cope with fear and uncertainty. The speaker's book, which is an act of service, has gained wider recognition through influential endorsements and media attention, providing him with new opportunities and a larger audience. Working with Anthony Bourdain, a successful storyteller and publisher, was a valuable experience that helped bring the book to life. The speaker's ground rules for telling his story included being authentic, sharing his experiences honestly, and focusing on the lessons and insights he gained from his journey.

    • From raw and unfiltered memoir to screenplay-like narrativeThe author wrote a successful memoir by drawing inspiration from Sugar Ray Robinson's biography and creating a screenplay-like narrative, resonating with readers who rarely read or had given up on books.

The author aimed to write a raw and unfiltered memoir, free from unnecessary fluff or padding. He drew inspiration from Sugar Ray Robinson's biography and wanted his own book to read like a screenplay, jumping from one seminal moment in his life to the next. The author's self-awareness as a reader translated into his writing, creating a successful and engaging narrative that resonated with people who rarely read or had given up on books. The book's high-quality writing and unique voice attracted the attention of Hollywood producers, but the author was cautious about preserving the authenticity and grittiness of his story. Ultimately, he wanted the book to be a true representation of his experiences, not a feel-good movie or a watered-down version of the original.

Ozempic: Weight Loss Miracle Drug or Something Darker? Johann Hari on The Benefits & Risks
This week, I’m joined by Johann Hari, New York Times bestselling author, journalist, and speaker, to explore his journey into the world of the new weight loss drug phenomenon: Ozempic. Johann shares his surprising firsthand experience injecting himself weekly with the drug for over a year, leading to dramatic weight loss but also complex side effects. We discuss the staggering potential of these “magic pills” to curb the global obesity epidemic, but also the alarming risks like thyroid cancer, pancreatitis, and muscle wasting. Johann provides a nuanced look at the bigger picture—examining the role of pharmaceutical profit, societal pressures around body image, and whether medicalizing thinness addresses root causes. His investigation stretches from the science labs of Iceland to the food culture of Japan. This discussion ultimately confronts sobering philosophical questions about the ethics of pharmaceutical shortcuts versus growth through struggle. Please enjoy! S01 E009 Valentine Darling on Embracing your Whole Self, The Essential Nature of Community and Sobriety

S01 E009 Valentine Darling on Embracing your Whole Self, The Essential Nature of Community and Sobriety
Whether you've experienced trauma, mental health challenges or been actively swept up in substance misuse, it can be said that many of us are recovering from something. This conversation speaks to recovery and sobriety with a set of fresh eyes and perspective. And in this episode, we cover a lot more than that. We talk about Valentine's journey, beginning with a family and religious community of origin that simply did not embrace them for who they were, and unfortunately included abuse. They grew to reject the church they had loved when they realized that their sexuality was something considered shameful and wrong according to the religious rhetoric. We speak about their search for self, including discovering a love for dancing, music and the rave scene as a first glimpse of common community. Valentine speaks to their time swept up in substance use disorder, a time of being homeless, and ultimately how finding the practices of meditation and buddhism spurred the beginning of a journey to recovery. We talk about Valentine's personal take on recovery, what it has looked like for them and the incredible and supportive community they find themselves in now. Valentine shares about their family ultimately finding healing and common ground, including their ability to be expressive and embraced as who they truly are.
