    Podcast Summary

    • Russian private military contractor with unclear legal statusThe Wagner Group, a Russian private military contractor, gained fame for their effective role in foreign conflicts but their legal status became unclear when they became combatants in Russian territory, leading to their classification as a criminal organization by the US government.

The Wagner Group, a Russian private military contractor, was established in 2014 as a way for Russia to provide military assistance to foreign conflicts while complying with their constitution. The group, which was initially made up of retired military intelligence officers and veterans, became a powerful force in the Donbas region of Ukraine during the conflict there. Wagner's soldiers were highly effective and earned a reputation as heroic patriots in Russia. However, when the territories they were fighting in became Russian territory following a referendum in 2022, their legal status became unclear. Previously, they could operate as a private military contractor as long as they weren't on Russian soil. Now, they have become a combatant unit and their actions could be considered acts of war on behalf of Russia. Despite their reputation and effectiveness, the Wagner Group has been classified as a criminal organization by the United States government due to their activities in Africa.

    • Complexities and tensions between Russia's military institutions and private military organizationsRussia's annexation of Ukrainian territories led to the Wagner Group, a private military organization, becoming illegal due to Russian law, causing a public feud between the organization's command and the Ministry of Defense.

The Wagner Group, a private military organization from Russia, faced a significant shift in their legal status due to Russia's annexation of territories in Ukraine. Prior to this, Wagner operated as a private military contractor, which was effective due to its lack of bureaucratic encumbrances. However, once these territories became legally part of Russia from the Russian perspective, Russian law, which does not allow for private military contracts, rendered Wagner and its fighters illegitimate. The Wagner command element, led by high-level military figures, resisted this transition to the Ministry of Defense, leading to a public feud with the ministry's leadership. This situation highlights the complexities and tensions between Russia's military institutions and its private military organizations.

    • Wagner Group Insurrection: Not a Military Decision by RogozhinA council of soldiers led an insurrection against the Russian government, not Evgeny Rogozhin. Suspected foreign influence and instability may have played a role.

While Evgeny Rogozhin, the public face of the Wagner Group, may have instigated an insurrection against the Russian government, it was not a military decision made by him. Instead, the decision was made by a council of experienced soldiers who were concerned about the character of Wagner changing if they were compelled to sign contracts. Pergocian, the leader of the insurrection, exhibited red flags of instability, greed, and financial problems, and there are suspicions that he was influenced by foreign powers, particularly an oligarch in London, to carry out a coup d'etat against Vladimir Putin. However, not all Wagner fighters joined the insurrection, and those who did were misled into believing they were securing the border region. Despite this, Putin received support from all Russian leaders, and the insurrection ultimately failed.

    • Chechens shift from rebellion to loyalty towards PutinFormer Chechen rebels became loyal to Putin, forming a significant military force within Russia, after he promised them autonomy and economic control, resulting in peace and prosperity in Chechnya, and now 15,000 Chechen forces fight alongside Russian army in Ukraine.

The Chechens, who were once in rebellion against Russia during the 1990s, are now fiercely loyal to Vladimir Putin and have become a significant military force within Russia. This shift in allegiance occurred after the end of the second Chechen war in 2005, when Putin convinced many former rebels that they were being used by foreign intelligence services and promised them autonomy and economic control over Chechnya. As a result, Chechnya has thrived, and its people are deeply grateful to Putin for bringing peace and prosperity to their region. Today, there are 15,000 well-equipped and highly trained Chechen forces fighting alongside the Russian army in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

    • Wagner Group's Surrounding and DeclineDespite Wagner Group's defeat and Putin's association, Putin's popularity remains high due to military's loyalty.

The Wagner Group, once a popular and powerful military force in Russia, faced annihilation when they were surrounded by Ukrainian forces in Rostov. This event led to a significant decline in the group's leader, Yevgeny Prigozhin's, popularity and marked him as a traitor. As a result, Wagner is being disbanded, and its soldiers will be either pardoned or allowed to join the Russian military. This incident, rather than indicating Russia's weakness or Putin's regime being a house of cards, demonstrates Putin's strong leadership and the loyalty of the Russian military to him. Despite the national tragedy and embarrassment, Putin's popularity remains high.

    • Military conflict in Moscow: An embarrassment for RussiaPolitical instability doesn't always lead to military weakness. Despite an embarrassing military conflict in Moscow, Russia's military remained effective and Putin may even emerge stronger.

A military conflict in the capital city of a country, no matter how it's resolved, can be an embarrassment for both the president and the nation. This was evident in the recent situation in Russia, where an uprising by a military organization in Moscow led to international attention and concern. Despite the embarrassment, it's important to note that the conflict had no significant impact on the battlefield. The Russian military continued to perform effectively, and there were no major breakthroughs by the opposing forces. This means that anyone hoping for a collapse of Russia due to this incident will be disappointed. In fact, Putin may even emerge stronger from this embarrassment. Overall, it's a reminder that political instability can have far-reaching consequences, but it doesn't always translate to military weakness.

Hope From Farmers with John Kempf

I recently sat down for a fascinating discussion with John Kempf, an Amish entrepreneur who founded @AdvancingEcoAgriculture (AEA) in 2006 and who currently serves as Chief Vision Officer and Executive Board Chairman. Kempf also hosts the Regenerative Agriculture podcast. After his farm was hit by pesticide-induced crop failures, Kempf transitioned to regenerative agriculture practices that strengthen plant immunity, improve soil health, and increase the soil microbiome. AEA has worked on over 4 million acres in the U.S. and internationally, offering farmers a comprehensive approach to regenerative agriculture so that they can become more resilient, effective, and profitable. Thank you for the riveting conversation and for all the incredible environmental work you do, John.

Senator Rand Paul on Wuhan, Fauci and Covid

Senator Rand Paul on Wuhan, Fauci and Covid

U.S. Senator Rand Paul and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. share their experiences with coronavirus and censorship in this historic episode.

Here is the description of Rand Paul's new book, Deception: The Great Covid Cover-Up:

Senator Rand Paul was on to Anthony Fauci from the start. Wielding previously unimaginable power, Fauci misled the country about the origins of the Covid pandemic and shut down scientific dissent.
One of the few leaders who dared to challenge "America’s Doctor" was Senator Rand Paul, himself a physician. Deception is his indictment of the catastrophic failures of the public health bureaucracy during the pandemic.
Senator Paul presents the evidence that:

    • The Covid virus was likely the product of gain-of-function research at the Wuhan lab in China—research funded in part by the U.S. government.
    • Taxpayer dollars for that research were deceptively funneled to Wuhan without the required regulatory review.
    • Fauci and his scientific yes-men knew from day one about Covid’s origin and tried to cover it up.
    • Fauci and his allies ruthlessly attacked everyone—including highly qualified scientists—who threatened to reveal the truth about the pandemic.

Why? Hundreds of millions of dollars of grants and unreported royalties were at stake, and heads would roll if the truth got out.

It’s February 23rd. You’re listening to the President’s Daily Brief. Your morning intel starts now. ------ A good day to you, ladies and gentlemen. I’ve got three briefs for you this morning that are shaping America — and the world. But here’s the kicker: it’s actually an old policy promoted by Donald Trump. Second, we continue our look south of the border to an allegation this morning that the current president of Mexico took cash from the Mexican cartels years ago. Third, get out your maps and your safari hats because we’re off to Africa this morning. The countries of Tanzania and Uganda are launching a major new oil project that could impact the price you pay for gas — and the price for batteries in those electric vehicles. Later, we close out the podcast with a listener question about that ammunition shortage in Ukraine that we talked about last Friday. ----- Please remember to subscribe if you enjoyed this episode of the President's Daily Brief.
