Relationship Advice from a “Mega Monk” | Haemin Sunim

    enNovember 11, 2020

    Podcast Summary

    • A Monk's Journey to Spiritual AwakeningSeek answers to life's questions, let go of labels, and find peace in the unconditioned state of being.

Sunni, a former monk, shares his personal journey of seeking answers to life's fundamental questions, leading him to become a monk and dedicate his life to spiritual awakening. He emphasizes that the answers we seek are not always knowable, and that true understanding comes from letting go of labels and identifications. Sunni encourages listeners to question their sense of self and seek the unconditioned state of being, which can lead to a greater sense of freedom and peace. This conversation highlights the value of introspection and the ongoing quest for self-love and self-understanding.

    • Experience the depths of your true natureThrough practices like meditation, quiet the mind and tap into the vast emptiness and awareness that transcends duality, allowing for peace and unity with all things.

The essence of who we are goes beyond our identification with our thoughts, body, and concepts. Through practices like meditation, we can quiet our mind and tap into the vast emptiness and awareness that is inherently present. This non-dual state transcends the duality of subject and object, and allows us to experience peace and unity with all things. However, it can be challenging to stay present in this state as our minds are naturally drawn to thoughts and concepts. It's important to remember that moments of quietude and non-dual awareness exist within our daily lives, even if they are fleeting. By recognizing and embracing these moments, we can deepen our understanding of our true nature.

    • Moments of pure knowing and non-dualityExperience moments of freedom by recognizing thoughts as manifestations of awareness, not obstacles, through quiet appreciation and mindfulness.

Our minds have the capacity for moments of pure knowing and non-duality, often experienced during moments of quiet appreciation for beauty or nature. These moments arise when we detach ourselves from our thoughts and become mindful of them. This realization can shift our perspective on the constant stream of thoughts, recognizing them as manifestations of our own awareness rather than obstacles to experiencing freedom. The beauty of this realization is that it's already there, waiting for us to become aware of it. By appreciating the world around us and silencing our minds, we can tap into this realm of unconditionality and non-duality, finding moments of awe and wonder.

    • Discovering the nature of consciousnessRealizing there's a consciousness underlying experiences leads to peace and understanding of true nature. Helping others in need fosters supportive communities.

The ultimate question in life is to discover the nature of consciousness itself. By asking who or what is aware of our thoughts and experiences, we can come to a profound realization that there is a consciousness that underlies all of our experiences. This awareness becomes self-aware, leading us to a deep sense of peace and understanding of our true nature. Another key takeaway is the importance of helping others in times of need. The speaker shared how, in his 30s, he realized that some people's immediate concerns were not philosophical but practical, and he started a non-religious school to provide a supportive community for people facing various life challenges. Throughout his journey, the speaker's curiosity and dedication to understanding the nature of consciousness and helping others have been the driving forces in his life.

    • Monk fosters compassion and communityMonk's role is to bring people together, facilitating understanding and support, rather than providing answers himself.

Compassion and community can help individuals find hope and healing during difficult times. Hamian Sunim, a celibate monk, has dedicated his work to bringing people together and facilitating understanding and support among those going through various struggles, such as relationship issues, illness, or job loss. His approach is not to provide answers himself, but rather to act as a catalyst for connection and communication between individuals. Meanwhile, in the realm of pop culture, the early 2000s saw a wave of controversial reality TV shows, such as "The Swan," which subjected participants to intense transformations and competition, often resulting in negative outcomes. These contrasting narratives illustrate the power of empathy and connection in addressing challenges and the potential pitfalls of focusing solely on individual achievement or appearance.

    • Using Technology Mindfully for Positive GrowthBe aware of mental state while using tech, find balance, use for meditation, connect with others, embrace imperfections for freedom and joy

Technology, whether it's social media or apps, can be both a blessing and a curse. While it can help us build large followings and connect with people, it can also lead to addiction, obsession, and negative emotions. The key is to be aware of our mental state while using technology and to use it in a positive way, such as for meditation or connecting with others. Additionally, finding beauty in imperfections, as taught by ancient Zen masters, can help us relax and appreciate the unique character of the world around us. Whether it's in nature or in ourselves, embracing imperfections can lead to true freedom and joy.

    • Finding peace in imperfection and helping othersEmbrace imperfections, focus on helping others, and maintain a growth mindset for peace and contentment

Embracing our imperfections and focusing on helping others can lead to a more peaceful and content state of mind, rather than getting hung up on the idea of perfection. It's important to remember that our motivations matter, and if we're motivated by helping others, then our own imperfections may become less of a focus. Additionally, reframing imperfections as opportunities for improvement rather than failures can help us maintain a growth mindset. Ultimately, the goal should be to strive for excellence while accepting that perfection is an unattainable ideal.

    • Finding balance between life engagement and recognizing its impermanenceThrough meditation or introspection, we can gain perspective to find joy and freedom in everyday life, even amidst challenges, by recognizing we're not our thoughts and maintaining a sense of detachment.

We should strive to maintain a balance between fully engaging in life and recognizing its impermanent and illusory nature. As the speaker mentioned, this can be compared to being both in and out of a movie – playing our roles while also recognizing that it's all part of a larger show. This perspective, which can be gained through meditation or simple introspection, allows us to find joy and freedom in everyday life, even when faced with challenges or pressures. It's essential to remember that we are not our thoughts and that we have little control over them, and that recognizing this can help us break free from negative patterns and comparisons. Ultimately, this way of thinking can lead to a more mindful and fulfilling existence, allowing us to participate in the world while maintaining a sense of detachment and perspective.

    • Embrace inner reality for true enlightenmentTrue enlightenment is an inner realization, not something to be achieved through effort or external sources. Let go of striving and surrender to the present moment for spiritual growth.

True awakening or enlightenment is not something we can achieve through hard work or effort, but rather by letting go of our striving and embracing the unconditional and non-dual reality that is already present within us. We often seek external sources or experiences to attain this state, but the truth is that it's an inner realization that can only be discovered by slowing down and quieting the mind. The gap between what we know and what we do is the real work, and it's important to remember and apply our own advice in our daily lives. Frustration with not being able to see or experience this reality can actually be used as spiritual energy to push us towards letting go of our efforts and surrendering to the present moment.

    • Recognizing impermanence and letting goTrue enlightenment is about acknowledging the impermanence of all things and releasing inner distractions with compassion and warmth, leading to spaciousness and freedom from thought's limitations.

True enlightenment doesn't lie in seeking supernatural experiences or trying to obtain something external. Instead, it's about recognizing the impermanence of all things and learning to let go of inner distractions with compassion and warmth. By viewing our thoughts as ancient neurotic patterns and responding with kindness, we can cultivate spaciousness in our minds and experience the freedom from thought's limitations. This practice requires effort and patience, but the reward is the realization that everything, including our minds, is part of the natural world.

    • The infinite space between thoughts is true realityPaying full attention to the present moment without attachment leads to love and interconnectedness

The empty, spacious moment between thoughts is the true nature of reality, and love arises when we fully pay attention to the present moment without attachment to subjectivity or objects. This nanosecond of no thoughts is infinite, peaceful, and unbound, offering a release from the dualistic perspective of subject and object. Love is defined as the act of paying full attention to someone or something without self-concern, creating a deep connection that has always existed. By focusing on the present moment and letting go of the need to label or categorize, we can experience the interconnectedness of all things and the love that arises from it.

    • The importance of being present in loveTrue connection comes from being fully present and attentive to the person in front of us, rather than trying to possess them.

Love is not about ownership or fixating on physical attributes, but rather about paying attention and appreciating the present moment with another person. This perspective, as shared in the conversation, contrasts with the common portrayal of love in media and music, which often focuses on romantic gestures and intense emotions. The speaker emphasizes that true connection comes from being fully present and attentive to the person in front of us, rather than trying to possess them. This mindset can lead to a deeper and more meaningful relationship, and it's a valuable lesson to keep in mind in our daily lives. Additionally, the conversation touched on the importance of being present and appreciating the world around us, as well as the value of collaboration and teamwork in creating engaging content. Overall, the conversation offered a thoughtful and insightful perspective on love and the importance of being fully present in our relationships and in the world around us.

The Science Of Getting Out Of Your Head | Annie Murphy Paul

An acclaimed science writer on how to upgrade your mind by using more than your head.

When you think about thinking, most of us think of it as a supremely solo pursuit. You’re in your head, concentrating and cogitating, all by yourself. But the science shows that if you want to improve your thinking, you need to get out of your head. Today we’re going to talk about a concept called “the extended mind.” Your mind isn’t just in your skull: it’s in your body, it’s in the people around you, it’s in your surroundings. The best thinking requires that you break out of what the writer David Foster Wallace called “the skull sized kingdom” and access these other resources.

This may sound abstract, but our guest today makes it very practical. Annie Murphy Paul is an acclaimed science writer whose work has appeared in the New York Times, the Boston Globe, Scientific American, Slate, Time, and The Best American Science Writing, among many other publications. She is the author of Origins and The Cult of Personality, hailed by Malcolm Gladwell as a “fascinating new book.” Currently a fellow at New America, Paul has spoken to audiences around the world about learning and cognition; her TED talk has been viewed by more than 2.6 million people. A graduate of Yale University and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, she has served as a lecturer at Yale University and as a senior advisor at their Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning. Her latest book is The Extended Mind: The Power of Thinking Outside the Brain

In this episode, we also talk about:

    • How to use your surroundings to think better
    • My favorite of the three areas of this book – thinking with our relationships
    • Why “groupthink” isn’t always a bad thing (OR you can say, the benefits of thinking in groups)
    • What she called “extension inequality” – that this benefit of the extended mind isn’t available to all people
