    • Anvil's journey to unexpected successPersevering through obstacles can lead to unexpected success, as shown in Anvil's story and Sasha Gervasi's career.

Pursuing an audacious dream relentlessly, even when faced with seemingly insurmountable obstacles, can lead to unexpected success. This was exemplified in the story of the heavy metal band Anvil and filmmaker Sasha Gervasi. Anvil was on the brink of breaking big in the music industry but never quite made it. Sasha made a documentary about their journey, self-financing it when no distributors were interested. The movie went on to become a cult classic and gave Anvil the career they had always wanted. Sasha's career as a filmmaker also took off due to the success of Anvil. The film, though not widely known at first, was rediscovered during the COVID-19 lockdown by a younger generation and gained a new following. This unlikely success story highlights the importance of perseverance and the power of an authentic, passion-driven project.

    • Reviving an old project with love and supportAn aging Toronto rocker's movie and podcast gain new life due to fan love and interest, highlighting the importance of celebrating and respecting elder wisdom.

The power of love and support can breathe new life into old projects. The indie movie "Anvil" from a decade and a half ago is getting a re-release in movie theaters across the country and overseas due to an outpouring of love and interest. This is a rare occurrence for an indie film, especially in today's movie industry. The podcast featuring the band members of Anvil, including Sasha, will also be released around the same time. Sasha, one of the band members and a dear friend, is an aging Toronto rocker with endearing charm and wisdom. The podcast featuring him and his bandmates is a small step towards celebrating and respecting the wisdom of elders, which is often overlooked in Western society. The speaker expressed his gratitude for the love and support around the Mike Fremont episode, featuring a centenarian and multiple masters world record holder. The speaker believes that our society does not do a good job of celebrating elders and values individual success through isolation rather than communal living. The speaker also reflected on his own introverted nature and encouraged listeners to tune into the Susan Cain episode to learn more about introversion.

    • Exploring the Impact of Writing on Personality and Self-AwarenessWriting can lead to personality shifts and self-awareness, but extremist beliefs and zealotry can have dangerous consequences. Technology, such as high-performance apparel, and living alcohol-free can also positively impact performance and well-being.

The introspective nature of writing and the demands of a writing career can lead to a shift in personality, even causing a once extroverted person to become more introverted. Additionally, the discussion touched upon the importance of self-awareness, as seen in Mike Fremont's sharing of his diet, and the potential dangers of zealotry and extremist ideologies, as exemplified by the Salman Rushdie attack. It's crucial for individuals engaging in public discourse to be aware of their beliefs and the potential consequences of holding them too rigidly, as the world becomes increasingly complex and chaotic. Furthermore, the importance of technology, specifically high-performance apparel, was emphasized, as it can significantly impact performance and comfort. Lastly, the benefits of living an alcohol-free lifestyle were reiterated.

    • Balancing Enjoyment and Negative Consequences of AlcoholDiscover Go Brewing for alcohol-free brews with natural ingredients, fewer calories, and no added sugar or artificial processing. Balance enjoyment with mindfulness in personal health and societal discourse.

Even though alcohol can provide enjoyment, it comes with negative consequences such as disrupting sleep, causing hangovers, and at its worst, leading to serious issues. However, a solution has emerged in the form of Go Brewing, a company producing alcohol-free brews with natural ingredients, fewer calories, and no added sugar or artificial processing. This discussion also touched upon the complexities of free speech and the current political climate, where certain issues seem to elicit extreme reactions and calls for censorship from both sides. Yuval Noah Harari's advice to avoid profiteering in the culture war was also mentioned as a thought-provoking perspective. Overall, the conversation highlighted the importance of balance and mindfulness in various aspects of life, from personal health to societal discourse.

    • Young swimmer sets world record in 100 freestyle at European championships17-year-old Romanian swimmer David Popovich breaks world record in 100 freestyle, becoming youngest holder, inspiring awe in swimming community. New formats and events add excitement to endurance sports, while controversies continue in extreme sports.

The world of obscure endurance sports continues to push boundaries and inspire awe, as young athletes like David Popovich break records and challenge expectations. Popovich, a 17-year-old swimmer from Romania, recently broke the world record in the 100 freestyle at the European championships, becoming the youngest 100 meter freestyle world record holder. His impressive form and age defying performance have left many in the swimming community in awe. Elsewhere, the world of endurance sports is experimenting with new formats and events to make these niche sports more interesting to a mainstream audience. For instance, the dual meet between Australia and the United States in swimming featured a 200 I.M event where swimmers chose the order of strokes, adding an element of excitement and unpredictability to the race. In the world of extreme sports, there was controversy over the women's victory at the Badwater Ultramarathon, but the situation has since been clarified. Overall, the world of obscure endurance sports continues to challenge and inspire, offering a glimpse into the human capacity for endurance and determination.

    • Investigation into a questionable ultra-marathon resultDespite skepticism, the investigation concluded the result was legitimate, showcasing the unexpected capabilities of ultra-runners and the community's continued awe-inspiring feats.

The investigation into a questionable ultra-marathon result led to an exhaustive analysis by the Marathon Investigation team, who ultimately concluded that the result was legitimate. However, there are still skeptics, including a Substack writer named Kevin Beck, who disagree. Chris Kossman, the race director of Badwater, weighed in on the matter, stating that the runner in question had earned her victory and highlighting historical precedent for unexpected improvements in ultra-running performances. Meanwhile, Oz, another ultra-marathon runner, completed an impressive 130-mile run from Montauk to Manhattan in 21 hours, further showcasing the unexpected capabilities of ultra-runners. The Audacious Report, a YouTube channel that creates documentaries about athletes and races in the ultra-running world, chronicled Oz's Montauk to Manhattan run and is expected to release an amazing documentary about it. Overall, the ultra-running community continues to be filled with unexpected performances and impressive feats.

    • First-time ultra runner Hella defies expectationsDedication and smart training led Hella to finish as top 150th overall runner, 118th male, and 41st in 30-39 age group in his first ultra race, surpassing ultra-running veteran.

Determination and preparation can lead to impressive results, even for a first-time ultra runner like Hella. Despite having limited experience with ultra races and trail running, Hella trained with Robbie and successfully completed the Leadville Trail 100, finishing as the 146th overall runner, the 118th male, and 41st in the 30 to 39 age group. His impressive finish was all the more notable as he bested ultra-running veteran Harvey Lewis by an hour. The ultra-running community is filled with elite athletes, many of whom live at high altitude and train extensively for these races. Hella's achievement, in his first ultra and against such experienced competition, is a testament to his dedication and the power of smart training.

    • UTMB: Jim Walmsley's Determination to Win and Record-Breaking Performances in Free DivingAmerican ultra runner Jim Walmsley aims to be the first American UTMB winner, mirroring Lance Armstrong's Tour de France focus. Free diving records were broken at Vertical Blue, with Mateusz Molina setting a new free immersion mark and Arnaud Girald achieving a bifins record.

The UTMB ultra trail race in the mountains of Mont Blanc, France, is a prestigious and highly anticipated event in the world of ultra running. American runner Jim Walmsley, who has previously attempted the race multiple times without winning, has focused all his efforts on this year's race, aiming to become the first American to claim victory. Walmsley's dedication and single-minded focus on UTMB mirrors Lance Armstrong's approach to the Tour de France. The women's side is also expected to see notable performances, with Camille Herron being a contender. In the world of free diving, the Vertical Blue competition showcases four disciplines: constant weight, free immersion, constant no fins, and constant weight bifins. The event saw two men's world records broken this year, with Mateusz Molina setting a new mark for free immersion at 127 meters and Arnaud Girald achieving an impressive 120 meters using bifins, a feat previously unseen in the sport.

    • Russian athlete banned and deepest woman experiences setback in free diving competitionDespite challenges and controversies, free diving athletes continue to push human endurance limits with impressive world records

The world of competitive free diving is filled with incredible athletes pushing the limits of human endurance, but the sport is not without its challenges and controversies. For instance, Russian athlete Alexey Molchanov, the current world record holder in constant weight and free immersion diving, was banned from competing in the Vertical Blue competition due to a ban on Russian athletes. Meanwhile, Olenka Artnik, the deepest woman in constant weight diving, came close to breaking the world record but experienced a blackout during her attempt and has since taken a step back. Despite these setbacks, the athletes remain dedicated to their craft and continue to push the boundaries of what is possible in free diving. Additionally, Orlando Bloom, an actor and freediving enthusiast, made an appearance at the competition and even took a dive himself. The world records in free diving are impressive, with Alexey holding the record at 130 meters in constant weight and 126 meters in free immersion. These records equate to swimming over 260 meters without taking a breath, an astounding feat. The dynamic world record is almost 300 meters, further highlighting the extraordinary abilities of these athletes.

    • Impact of political bans on athletesThe fairness of banning athletes from competitions based on political decisions is a complex issue, with arguments for and against, and the intersection of sport and activism being a consideration.

There are ongoing debates about the impact of banning athletes from competitions based on political decisions. Mateus Estrela and Molina are capable of swimming 300 meters in a pool underwater with one breath, an impressive feat. The human limit for constant weight swimming is estimated to be around 150 meters. Alexei is planning a big spectacle to challenge this record. The banning of athletes like Medvedev from competitions due to political decisions is a complex issue. Some argue that it's unfair to hold all athletes accountable for the actions of their governments. Others believe that exceptions should be made for exceptional human beings. The discussion also touched upon the intersection of sport and activism, with the conclusion that bans may not be effective in addressing concerns. Antonio Arguelles, a Stanford alum, recently completed the 40 Bridges swim around Manhattan twice, breaking records for distance and age.

    • Overcoming setbacks and adaptingDetermination and adaptability can lead to remarkable achievements, even without press coverage. Sharing personal stories on social media can lead to unexpected success.

Determination and adaptability can lead to remarkable achievements, even in the face of challenges. The man we're discussing, a robust open water swimmer, overcame a setback near Dover and is already planning his next swim in 2024. He's an intellectual, friendly person who trains in various environments and even celebrates with mariachis. Despite his impressive accomplishment, there was no press coverage, leaving room for individuals to share his story. Adam, who knows him personally, started sharing more content on Instagram and saw significant growth in followers. The key here is that instead of lamenting the situation, they chose to adapt and make the most of it. Whether it's in swimming, content creation, or any other area of life, being resilient and open to change can lead to unexpected success.

    • Exploring the value of experimentation in our twentiesEmbrace the twenties as a time for diverse experiences and personal growth, as it can lead to future success and a better understanding of different walks of life.

The way we present content, particularly from podcasts, can significantly impact its reach and resonance. A standout example is a clip from a podcast episode featuring Rainn Wilson and Reza Aslan, where Rainn encourages young people to view their twenties as a time for experimentation and gathering experiences rather than focusing solely on career trajectory. This message sparked intense debate in the comment section, with some agreeing wholeheartedly and others disputing it as privileged advice. Regardless of personal perspective, the episode's success underscores the importance of sharing diverse viewpoints and allowing individuals the freedom to explore and learn from their experiences. The speaker, who identifies with Rainn's perspective, emphasizes the value of trying various things and failing, as it leads to personal growth and a better understanding of different walks of life. Ultimately, the key takeaway is that the way we approach our twenties and the experiences we gather during that time can greatly influence our future success and personal development.

    • Your twenties are a workshop for personal growthYour twenties may not seem valuable now, but they're a crucial time for learning about yourself and gaining experiences that can lead to future successes.

Our experiences in life, especially during our twenties, may not seem valuable or linear at the moment, but they can play a significant role in shaping our skills and preparing us for future successes. It's important to remember that not all growth is quantifiable or immediate, and that taking risks and having new experiences can lead to unexpected benefits. However, this perspective can be challenging to embrace during the pressures of young adulthood, especially in today's competitive and economically unequal world. The idea that our twenties are a waste of time is a misconstrued notion. Instead, they can be seen as a workshop stage where we learn about ourselves and gain experiences that may not directly benefit us in a linear way but can crystallize into valuable skills and insights later in life. The wealth inequality and the pressure to succeed can make this perspective difficult to accept, but it's essential to remember that all experiences, good and bad, can contribute to our personal growth.

    • The Wealth Gap in Entertainment: Stars Struggle While Executives ThriveThe wealth gap in entertainment, and potentially beyond, raises concerns about fairness and long-term societal cohesion as artists and creators struggle while executives reap substantial financial rewards.

The wealth gap in the entertainment industry, and potentially beyond, is a pressing issue as artists and creators struggle to make ends meet while executives and top brass reap substantial financial rewards. Sydney Sweeney, for instance, despite her rising stardom and consistent work, feels the pressure to monetize her social media presence and hustle for deals due to the changing economic landscape. The promise of meritocracy, where hard work leads to financial success, seems to be a lie as wealth continues to concentrate at the top. This situation raises concerns about the long-term cohesion of society as the disparity grows. The example of LeBron James and the NBA illustrates this issue, as his massive earnings pale in comparison to the league's revenue. While commercial deals for celebrities like George Clooney and Matt Damon are generally accepted, it's essential to question the fairness of this arrangement. Ultimately, the discussion around wealth inequality highlights the need for a more equitable distribution of financial resources, allowing everyone to live fulfilling lives and contribute to society without being weighed down by financial burdens.

    • Blurred Lines Between Personal Branding and Professional IntegrityIn the digital age, the pressure to monetize online presence raises questions about authenticity and the impact of incentives on public discourse. Journalists, celebrities, and writers face challenges in balancing personal branding and professional integrity.

The lines between personal branding and professional integrity have become increasingly blurred, especially in the digital age. Celebrities, writers, and journalists alike are under pressure to monetize their online presence, leading to debates about authenticity and the role of incentives in shaping public discourse. The example of Sweeney, a journalist who uses her Instagram for advertising, highlights this trend and raises questions about the impact of the star system on journalism as a whole. The pressure to create attention-grabbing content and attract subscribers can lead to a different form of journalism, one that prioritizes hot takes over nuanced analysis. While some individuals are able to navigate this landscape and stay true to their principles, others may struggle with the temptation to profit from the culture war. Ultimately, it's important to consider the larger societal factors that contribute to these incentives and the ways in which they shape the information landscape.

    • The power of medium in shaping content and behaviorThe medium of content creation and consumption can influence behavior and drive content in certain directions due to economic incentives and external validation, potentially leading to a loss of journalistic ethics and an increase in opinionated content.

The medium of content creation and consumption, such as podcasts, social media, and television, can significantly influence behavior and drive content in certain directions due to economic incentives and external validation from audiences. This can lead to a loss of journalistic ethics and an increase in opinionated content, potentially contributing to societal issues. The medium itself acts as a magnet, shaping the actions of individuals from creators to consumers. It's crucial for content creators and consumers to be aware of these influences and strive for objectivity and truth in the face of these economic and social pressures. Ultimately, it's essential to critically evaluate the impact of the medium on our lives and society as a whole.

    • The Impact of Technology and Social Media on Our Attention and LivesWe're all hypocrites in our relationship with technology, living in an attention economy, and need to reflect on finding a balance that works for us.

We're all grappling with the impact of technology and social media on our attention and our lives in various ways. Max Fisher's new book, "The Chaos and the Machine," sheds light on this subject matter, and it's essential for us to consider it deeply. We're all hypocrites in our relationship with technology – using it while criticizing it. The medium affects our attention, and we're living in an attention economy. Some people struggle to focus, while others, like the podcast guest, read multiple books at once. The New York Times article about Willie Nelson, a legendary artist still touring at 89, serves as a reminder that aging doesn't mean the end of creativity and productivity. Ultimately, we need to reflect on our relationship with technology and find a balance that works for us.

    • Balancing goals and family responsibilitiesIdentify values, prioritize goals, communicate with loved ones, and seek support to balance ambitious goals with family expectations and responsibilities.

Setting big goals and pursuing adventures is important, especially during young adulthood. However, it's crucial to balance these goals with family expectations and responsibilities. The key is to identify and prioritize values, and ensure that goals align with these values. It's not always an easy balance, but by being clear on what matters most, individuals can make informed decisions that fulfill their goals while also nourishing their relationships and other important aspects of their lives. The discussion also emphasized the importance of communication with loved ones and seeking their support in pursuing goals. Overall, the conversation underscored the importance of setting ambitious goals while also being mindful of the impact on other areas of life.

    • Navigating relationship conflicts: Understanding and compromisingEffective communication is crucial for resolving conflicts in relationships. By understanding each other's fears and working towards compromises, couples can build a stronger foundation based on mutual respect and support.

Effective communication is key in navigating conflicts in relationships. When one partner has a goal that the other is apprehensive about, it's essential to understand the reasons behind the fear and work together to find a compromise. This may involve discussing the specific risks involved, acknowledging different risk tolerances, and demonstrating good faith by meeting smaller goals first. Ultimately, the goal is to create a safe, respectful, and mutually supportive environment where both partners feel heard and valued. By getting granular with the details and understanding each other's perspectives, couples can build a stronger foundation for their relationship and work towards common goals.

    • Embrace the Seasons of Life and Personal GrowthFocus on personal growth and adapting to new situations, rather than clinging to past experiences or rigid requirements, to attract partners and live a fulfilling life

It's important to recognize and accept the different seasons of life and judge current experiences based on present circumstances rather than past ones. Constant communication and goal setting can help navigate challenges and adapt to new situations. In the context of dating, focusing more on personal growth and becoming the best version of oneself is a more powerful attractor for potential partners than rigidly adhering to specific requirements. This approach radiates confidence and authenticity, making one an attractive and magnetic person to be with.

    • Focus on personal growth and self-completionSeek self-improvement, value compatibility, and embrace differences for a successful relationship.

Personal growth and self-completion are crucial in attracting a compatible partner. It's essential to focus on completing yourself before seeking a relationship, as your partner shouldn't be expected to fill in the missing pieces. Flexibility and shared core values are also vital in a relationship. While it's important to find someone who aligns with your values, it's not necessary for them to match perfectly with every interest or aspect of your life. Embrace the differences and the growth opportunities they bring. Remember, people are constantly evolving, and being open to the mystery and flexibility in dating can lead to unexpected but beautiful experiences. So, focus on self-improvement, value compatibility, and embrace the journey of discovery.

    • Acknowledging the team behind the scenesCreating content is a team effort, acknowledging the contributions of each team member is essential.

The importance of community and collaboration in creating and producing content. Rich Roll, the podcast host, acknowledged the team behind the scenes who make the show possible. This includes audio engineering, production, show notes, video work, graphics, copywriting, advertiser relationships, and even the theme music. Rich expressed his gratitude to each team member and emphasized that they don't produce the show alone. The episode highlights the value of having a strong team and the importance of acknowledging their contributions. So, whether it's a podcast, a YouTube channel, or any other creative endeavor, remember that it takes a village to bring it to life.

Ozempic: Weight Loss Miracle Drug or Something Darker? Johann Hari on The Benefits & Risks
This week, I’m joined by Johann Hari, New York Times bestselling author, journalist, and speaker, to explore his journey into the world of the new weight loss drug phenomenon: Ozempic. Johann shares his surprising firsthand experience injecting himself weekly with the drug for over a year, leading to dramatic weight loss but also complex side effects. We discuss the staggering potential of these “magic pills” to curb the global obesity epidemic, but also the alarming risks like thyroid cancer, pancreatitis, and muscle wasting. Johann provides a nuanced look at the bigger picture—examining the role of pharmaceutical profit, societal pressures around body image, and whether medicalizing thinness addresses root causes. His investigation stretches from the science labs of Iceland to the food culture of Japan. This discussion ultimately confronts sobering philosophical questions about the ethics of pharmaceutical shortcuts versus growth through struggle. Please enjoy! E482 Ask Nick - Addicted to Toxic Work Situationship

Welcome back to another juicy and exciting episode of The Viall Files: Ask Nick Edition! On this show, we’re here to help with all your burning questions about dating and relationships! We bring on our first caller, who has been in a long distance relationship for a long time with her boyfriend. After it looks like they are able to move much closer and no longer have to do long distance, our caller wonders how to best transition into this new phase, being able to enjoy each other but also respect the space they might need. Our next caller finds herself stuck in a toxic work environment when a situationship starts to go astray. Having an intense  emotional relationship with someone you work with everyday, our caller feels stress when not being able to set proper boundaries both at work and in the situationship with her coworker. Our last caller struggles when her husband's friend continues to try to insert himself and befriend our caller’s family. After her mother says she’s getting DMs from this friend, our caller is unsure how to read his intentions and how to set boundaries while also potentially being supportive if need be.

    ABOUT SARAH:

Sarah Elkins with dog in snow, Elkins Consulting logo and Gallup Strengthsfinder logo

"Uncovering the right stories for the right audiences so executives, leaders, public speakers, and job seekers can clearly and actively demonstrate their character, values, and vision."

In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I’ve realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don’t realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they’re sharing them with.

My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home.

The audiobook, Your Stories Don’t Define You, How You Tell Them Will is now available!

Included with your purchase are two bonus tracks, songs recorded by Sarah's band, Spare Change, in her living room in Montana.

    960 The Voice of Truth

    960 The Voice of Truth

In your life, where does the voice of truth come from? Whose whispers gain your greatest attention?

Maybe it's the constant failures and short-comings.

Desire to be supported and encourage by other like-minded women? Join us at Women of IMPACThttp://facebook.com/groups/thewomenofimpact

Maybe it's the faults of your past.

Maybe it's your own belief that you're never good enough.

Why is it that we hang out with our stumbles and failures questioning our worth?

Never once did God hesitate when He created you; fearfully and wonderfully made, knowing every hair on your head.

Yet where is the voice of truth?

Is it the naysayers, the badgers, the mockers? Is that where your voice of truth is being solidified and defined?

I want you to really think about whom you are putting your trust in.

The K.I.S.S. ~ The Voice of Truth!

REFLECTION: Today, I want you to reflect on these three questions.

    1. Where is the voice of truth coming from?
    2. What is the voice of truth telling you?
    3. How are you using the voice of truth in your life?

If you are hearing God, the only voice of truth, then you know you are loved, given a gift of salvation, and grace for your life's journey.

That's the voice of truth you need to be listening to.

Not the negative CRAP, the doubts and drama of others, and not the daily sagas of self-centered mindsets.

It's all about control, earthly control. What happened to Heavenly control?

Let God wash away the torment of lies that threaten your greatness He's creating within you.

Let it go! Let God have it all!

    Give Him your heart.
Dedicate your life to glorify Him.
Rejoice with the voice of truth.

As you go out this week...

"One step at a time leads to miles of greatness!"

May God bless you this week in all your steps, in all your endeavors. Seek His guidance. Praise His name. The voice of truth!
