During Mercury's retrograde periods, people may turn to astrology and spiritual practices as a form of comfort and manifestation during times of tumult. This trend is reflected in the rise of astrology apps, meme accounts, and the concept of manifestation. For businesses, switching to Shopify provides a reliable and intuitive platform for selling, regardless of the astrological influences.

    • Exploring Tarot Card Readings on Social MediaTarot card readings on social media provide bite-sized interpretations, allowing people to seek guidance, empowerment, and connection in a modern way, despite the lack of individual interaction.

The concept of finding signs and solutions from the universe, often referred to as "DeLulu" or being delusional, has gained popularity through social media platforms like TikTok and astrology accounts. This includes the use of tarot cards for interpretation and guidance. While some view it as a negative manifestation or a curse, others see it as a way to tap into other frequencies and manifest positive outcomes. The individual interactive element of tarot readings is replaced by mass interpretations on social media, with the belief that if a particular interpretation appears on one's feed, it's a sign meant specifically for them. This bite-sized approach to tarot card readings has become a trend on TikTok, with the account "Love Exist Visions" being an example of this phenomenon. Overall, the use of astrology and tarot cards on social media is a modern way for people to seek guidance, empowerment, and connection, despite the lack of individual interaction.

    • Social Media Algorithms and the SupernaturalPeople find meaning in social media algorithms, like tarot card readings or angel numbers, but these phenomena are determined by algorithms, not the universe. Confirmation bias can lead individuals to believe these signs are meaningful and influence actions.

While some people on social media platforms like TikTok believe in the supernatural significance of algorithms, such as tarot card readings or angel numbers, the reality is that these phenomena are determined by algorithms, not the universe. Despite this, many individuals continue to act on these beliefs, viewing them as signs from something greater. The prevalence of such content on social media, which often includes calls to action and promises of rewards, can be attributed to the algorithms that curate users' feeds based on their engagement history and online behavior. This can create a sense of confirmation bias, leading individuals to believe that these signs are meaningful and even influencing their actions. However, it's important to remember that these beliefs are not based on factual evidence but rather on the power of suggestion and the human tendency to seek meaning in seemingly random events.

    • Astrology and Personality InsightsExploring astrology can provide unique insights into personality traits and tendencies based on birth date and time.

Our astrological signs, determined by our birth date and time, can provide insights into our personality traits and tendencies. During a recording of Decoder Ring, the host, Wilh Haskin, used this information to provide detailed horoscope-like descriptions for each guest in the studio. For instance, Amory was described as easygoing and balanced, while Emery was identified as affable and chill on the surface but secretly nervous about important matters. These descriptions resonated with the guests and added depth to their understanding of themselves. It's important to note that while astrology is not a scientifically proven method for determining personality, it can be a fun and engaging way to explore personal connections and self-discovery.

    • Barnum Effect: Believing in Personalized DescriptionsThe Barnum Effect makes us feel that certain descriptions are tailored to us, even if they're broadly applicable. Change and practicality resonated with us, emphasizing the importance of adapting to new situations and maintaining dependability.

Even though the initial analysis of our personalities based on generic descriptions may not have been completely accurate, the resonance we felt towards some of the traits highlighted is a result of the Barnum Effect. This psychological phenomenon makes us believe that certain descriptions are tailored perfectly to us, even though they are broadly applicable. While we may not have found our moon and rising signs during the conversation, it's important to remember that a more accurate analysis could be obtained by using the birth information provided. Change and practicality were some of the traits that resonated with us, and we both identified with the idea of finding comfort in routine, even if we don't always achieve it. Ultimately, we acknowledged the value in adapting to change with a level-headed approach and maintaining dependability for those around us. Despite the initial skepticism, the conversation provided insight into our personalities and highlighted common traits that we can continue to explore.

    • The Barnum Effect: Feeling Resonance and Self-UnderstandingThe Barnum Effect inspires self-reflection and acceptance, but it's important to recognize that these sources of self-understanding are not infallible, and we should remain open to growth and authentic self-discovery.

People are drawn to personality tests and astrology due to the Barnum Effect, which makes us feel resonance and self-understanding, even if the results are not grounded in reality. This phenomenon can inspire self-reflection, openness to new ideas, and even self-acceptance, as people embrace their unique traits and differences. However, it's important to recognize that these sources of self-understanding are not omnipotent or infallible, and we should remain open to working on areas for improvement while celebrating our individuality. The Barnum Effect can be a fun and harmless way to explore self-discovery, but it's essential to differentiate between authentic and disingenuous sources of self-understanding. Ultimately, the key is to use these tools as a starting point for growth and self-acceptance, while remaining open to new ideas and working to better ourselves and our relationships with others.

    • Exploring Astrology: Balancing Inspiration and SkepticismAstrology can inspire personal growth and self-discovery, but it's crucial to use it responsibly and not rely on it blindly for success or answers.

While astrology and other forms of divination can provide interesting insights and potentially motivate positive changes, it's essential to use this knowledge responsibly. Misusing or overrelying on astrology can lead to complacency and a lack of initiative. For instance, believing that one's horoscope or a viral video guarantees success without any effort can be problematic. However, for most people, astrology can be a source of inspiration and self-reflection. As for birth date and time, it can add a personal touch to the astrological interpretation. Although it might be challenging to determine the exact time, reaching out to family members for help can be a useful starting point. Ultimately, the birth date and time may not hold definitive answers, but they can contribute to a more engaging and magical experience. This conversation also highlighted the importance of skepticism and critical thinking when encountering astrological claims. While it's entertaining to imagine receiving large sums of money or meeting strangers who change our lives based on astrological signs, it's crucial to remember that such occurrences are unlikely. In conclusion, astrology can be a fun and intriguing way to explore personal growth and self-discovery, but it's essential to approach it with a healthy dose of skepticism and responsibility.

Gen Z wants you to take political action, one TikTok at a time

Gen Z wants you to take political action, one TikTok at a time

Gen Z is over it. The youngest generation of adults is inheriting a climate crisis, the ongoing fallout from a global pandemic, a polarized political landscape, and a tenuous economic reality.  And many Gen Z members, a generation more likely to identify as progressive than conservative, are ready for something to give.

Enter: Gen Z for Change — a youth-led non-profit that brands itself as, "the place where the creator economy and progressive politics intersect on social media." The group leverages a hundreds-deep network of social media creators to spread calls to action over TikTok. They've also pulled on the programming expertise within their team to develop a caché of semi-automatic tools that take the guesswork out of engaging with their political agenda.

Their latest tool, "Ceasefire Now!!" takes these efforts one step further — resulting in, by Gen Z for Change's count, two million emails calling for a ceasefire in Gaza hitting the inboxes of elected representatives in Washington every day.

    The Jackie Show

Our interactions with nature are increasingly mediated by technology. We scroll through wildlife feeds on TikTok. We use Instagram to plan hikes. Even in the wilderness, we religiously bring our phones to document the experience. And then there are animal cams.

Since the 1990s, people have fawned over livestreams of cute pandas and colorful fish. One could argue that animal cams another example of how we’ve jammed a screen between ourselves and the wild. But the story of Jackie the bald eagle presents a different perspective: one in which technology might bring us closer to our fellow creatures.

Producer Dean Russell speaks with Endless Thread co-host Ben Brock Johnson about the potential upsides of technonaturalism.
