Christmas / 2003: Elf and Top 5 Christmas Movies

Christmas / 2003: Elf and Top 5 Christmas Movies

Staying in 2003, we wrap up the Christmas portion of our month with the modern day classic. Elf. Love or hate Will Ferrell, it's hard to not enjoy his performance in this movie. Jon Favreau's direction with homages to other classics like Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer is also something we love.

We break down the amazing cast, share our favorite scenes and lines, an of course, have some fun facts at the ready. Elf is required family viewing every year in the PCY households. Maybe this podcast can become a new family tradition. We did it! World's Best Podcast!

The Christmas season is here! To kick it off, here is our episode on Christmas music.  Borrowing the format from fellow podcast Playlist Wars, we each created what we think is the perfect 10 song Christmas playlist. Did Giff, Pete, or Brad create the best one? How hard is it to cut down so many wonderful options to only 10?

Speaking of Playlist Wars, we have a special appearance from host Brian Colburn. He shares three of his favorite songs before we begin. Please check them out. If you like music, you'll love what they do. So roast some chestnuts by your open fire and enjoy this festive episode!

2014: Gone Girl / Best Movies Based on Books

2014: Gone Girl / Best Movies Based on Books

We're getting literary this month. Sure David Fincher's Gone Girl, starring Rosamund Pike and Ben Affleck is a great movie, but it's also based on a fantastic book by Gillian Flynn. Brad shares his love for both versions before the gang discusses the movie and all its brilliant twists and turns up to and including the bonkers third act! There is so much to say about this movie it's hard to fit it all into one episode.

The second act of our show includes a draft of the best movies based on books. While only Brad ever reads a book, Pete and Giff do their best to keep up and act like they do. See if you favorite movie/book combination makes the cut.

2014: Fargo (TV Series) / Minnesota in Pop Culture Draft

Yeah, you betcha we're talkin' Fargo. Not the movie, that was from 1996, but the terrific TV series that started in 2014 with an all-star cast including Billy Bob Thornton, Colin Hanks, Alison Lohman, Martin Freeman, Adam Goldberg, Bob Odenkirk, Oliver Platt, Glenn Howerton, and more. This was a wonderful reimagining of the spectacular source material. We break it down the PCY way.

Since all things Fargo have such a deep connection to Minnesota, we took this opportunity to draft the best in pop culture from our great state. Whether you knew it or not, Minnesota has a plethora of options to choose from. Listen now to hear what we picked!

1992: Reservoir Dogs / Top Quentin Tarantino Work

1992: Reservoir Dogs / Top Quentin Tarantino Work

Quentin Tarantino's directorial debut was in 1992 with Reservoir Dogs. We liked this movie so much as 16 year olds some of us made a club called the Reservoir Doggs and had t-shirts made. What a time to be alive! We'll tell that story and break down this seminal film for your enjoyment.

While QT hasn't directed a large number of movies, he has been associated with many movies, TV shows, and more. So for our draft this week, we choose our favorite Quentin Tarantino-associated work. Listen to hear what makes the list. There may even be some surprises along the way.

1980: Caddyshack / Top Bill Murray Stuff

1980: Caddyshack / Top Bill Murray Stuff

It's happening! After close to three years, we're finally talking about maybe our collective favorite movie ever: 1980's Caddyshack! No movie has been more quoted, more watched, and more important to bringing us together with our friends than Caddyshack. In this episode, we talk all about what makes it great in our opinion.

One of the reasons Caddyshack is so wonderful is the performance of Bill Murray. While Ted Knight (Judge Smails), Rodney Dangerfield (Al Czervik), and Chevy Chase (Ty Webb) are also at the top of their game, Murray's Carl Spackler stands out as much as anyone else. We cap the episode off by drafting our favorite Bill Murray movies and other credits. Well...we're waiting...for you to listen!

1980: Trivial Pursuit / Top Board Games of All-Time

If there is one thing we love at PCY more than nostalgia, it might be trivia. The arrival of Trivial Pursuit in the 80s took the board game world by storm. At least that's how we remembered it. We talk about our first memories of the game (Spiro Agnew) and even pit Brad against Giff in a quick trivia match.

After the exciting mano a mano, we finish the episode by drafting our favorite board games. Do you like Scattergories, Pictionary, Monopoly, Sorry? Listen now to hear who wins and if your favorite game made one of our lists!

1980: Flash Gordon / Top One-Time Movie Characters

1980: Flash Gordon / Top One-Time Movie Characters

Dave is back! When our sometime host Dave heard we were doing 1980, he requested we discuss one of his favorite movies, Flash Gordon. None of the rest of us had seen this movie, and it is quite an experience. While it may not be the best movie ever made, it definitely has found its way into pop culture still today, thanks in no small part to the movie Ted. It also doesn't hurt that the music was done by Queen. It's a movie everyone should probably see once.

Flash Gordon was pretty clearly thought to be a franchise with multiple sequels, but it didn't work out that way. So our draft in this one is our favorite characters who only ever appeared in one movie. Obviously a very broad topic, we cover a lot of ground and are sure to mention many greats that you will love.
