From benchwarmer to endurance athlete: Katie Spotz
In this episode, Katie shares how she went from being a benchwarmer to an endurance athlete. She shares the defining moment of running her first mile that led to a shift in her mindset about what she is capable of.
Katie is an endurance athlete, charitable ambassador, author, and world-record holder. 34-year old Katie Spotz, from Cleveland, Ohio, describes herself as having been the “benchwarmer” throughout her life. However, there came a time when she made a discovery: you don’t have to be extraordinary to achieve incredible things. And she set about achieving them, one by one.
The list of accomplishments to Katie's name is long, and includes five ironman triathlon, cycling across America, a 325-mile river swim, running across deserts and a solo row across the Atlantic Ocean. But this wasn’t just any row; when Katie arrived in Guyana, South America, after 70 days at sea, she set a world record for the youngest ever solo ocean rower and first American to row from Africa to South America, some of many records to her name. Most recently, Katie set the Guinness World Record for the most consecutive days to run an ultramarathon distance running 11 ultras in 11 days to fund 11 clean water projects in Uganda.

Tunnel trouble: increasing many things, but not yield
High tunnel crops often look great for the first few years, but as tunnel soils begin to build up salts and alkalinity, we begin to see plant health problems around years 3-5. In this episode, Natalie Hoidal interviews Dr. Elsa Sanchez and Thomas Ford from Penn State about trends they've seen in high tunnel soils, and strategies for dealing with common problems.
How to Adjust Alkalinity
00:00 - Intro
00:58 - To reduce alkalinity, use acid. But there are a few types of acid. And what, exactly, does acid do? It converts alkalinity into carbonic acid (dissolved CO2).
04:17 - The amount of dissolved CO2 in your water determines the pH.
04:36 - Clarifying "carbonate alkalinity" vs. "total alkalinity".
07:45 - The Orenda App adjusts alkalinity automatically for you when you update the CYA level.
08:45 - How to actually add acid to reduce alkalinity: do not column pour! Dilute dilute dilute.
13:55 - How to deal with tap water with high alkalinity (150+ ppm) or very high alkalinity (200+ ppm).
17:16 - Reduce alkalinity slowly. Do not remove more than 20 ppm at a time. Aim for 10-15 ppm of alkalinity reduction at a time. The more dilution, the better.
18:12 - To reduce risk of 'tanking the pH' while reducing alkalinity, aerate the water. And there are other ways of stirring up the water without circulating it through the system.
20:00 - How to raise alkalinty: Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and Sodium carbonate (soda ash). Bicarb is more appropriate for raising alkalinity because it barely raises pH, whereas soda ash will raise the pH significantly for the same alkalinity addition.
23:49 - Summary. Thanks for listening!

Listener Q&A:As compiled, deciphered, edited and sometimes read by Brock Skywalker Armstrong, the Podcast Sidekick and Audio Ninja.
How To Use Baking Soda For Performance (And Alkalinity)Neeraj says: You recently talked about a study where taking Sodium Bicarbonate helped increase time to exhaustion. Is this because it lowers the acidity of the body? There are other supplements out there (like Acid Check) that claim the same thing. Should endurance athletes take these types of supplements, sodium bicarbonate or make their diets more alkaline?
In my response, I recommend: -Arm & Hammer Baking Soda Natural Ways To Increase GlutathioneJanine says: She is looking for natural ways to increase her glutathione production. She knows she can supplement with it, and the liquid can be effective but she is hoping to not have to spend more money.
In my response, I recommend: -Upgraded Glutathione -Whey Protein -Curcumin -Organic, grass-fed organ meats Can Mud Help You Recover Faster?Jason says: Lately he has been using this stuff called Primal Sports Mud after his workouts. It is supposed to aid with recovery. You apply a thin layer to the affected area, wrap it and apply heat. How exactly does applying something to your skin help your muscles recover faster?
In my response, I recommend watching the video below... and also these mud and pain studies. What To Do About Snapping Hip SyndromeTyler says: He has what is called "Snapping Hip Syndrome." Basically, when he is laying on his back and he lowers his left leg, just before the foot meets the ground he hears a loud clunking sound. He also has limited movement in his psoas which causes his opposite hip to overcompensate when he does any long distances. What would you do to help or release this impingement issue in his hip... he already does the usual smashing and stretching religiously.
