    32. Ben Baldanza of Spirit Airlines

    32. Ben Baldanza of Spirit Airlines

The so-called "Brat Pack of Aviation" - under the guidance of Bob Crandall from American Airlines in the late-1980s - have all gone on to become important figures in the U.S. airline industry.

But perhaps one of the quartet which also included Tom Horton, David Cush and Doug Parker who emerged as a true innovator is Ben Baldanza.

After leaving American Airlines in 1991, he had a string of executive positions at Northwest Airlines, Continental Airlines and Avianca and U.S. Airways before landing the stewardship of Spirit Airlines.

Spirit's new private equity owner gave Baldanza the freedom to put in place some of the most dramatic changes ever seen in U.S. aviation (mirroring many of those at Ryanair in Europe), giving him a reputation as an innovator with an edge.

He left Spirit in 2016 and now has a number of board positions, an academic role at George Mason University and his own aviation podcast, called Airlines Confidential

Baldanza joins us as the latest guest on How I Got Here.

    31. Randy Petersen of FlyerTalk

    31. Randy Petersen of FlyerTalk

It takes a lot of effort to be recognized by the mainstream media for your skills and influence within 12 months of creating something.

    Or does it?

A year after creating FlyerTalk, Randy Petersen was being hailed in the press for his expertise on all things related to frequent flying, loyalty programs and the passenger experience.

He was a frequent visitor to the headquarters of airlines around the world and had the ear of numerous CEOs in the business.

Such access and such influence is hard to come by but the larger-than-life Petersen remains extremely modest about his achievements.

Now retired from the day-to-day work of understanding and analyzing the aviation business, Petersen joins us as our latest guest on How I Got Here.

    Layin' Pipeline

    Layin' Pipeline

What made the internet angry this week?

Pipelines are back in the news, and we attempt to distill a centuries-old conflict into a 20 minute conversation about natural resources WITHOUT OFFENDING ANYBODY.  Andrew Scheer is still finding a way to say dumb shit on a national stage. A surprising amount of people are coming to the defense of the world's most obnoxious air traveler, and we're losing sight of who the REAL enemy in all of this is: airlines! We recap the two or three things we paid attention to at the Oscars. Terry Gilliam has some surprisingly toxic views for a former member of Monty Python. We finally establish what it is safe for middle-aged white men to hold opinions on. Why you should be hoarding boner pills for the forthcoming apocalypse. All this and more!

Einige Hyatt Globalist bekommen American Airlines Executive Platinum Status

Einige Hyatt Globalist bekommen American Airlines Executive Platinum Status

Mal sehen was Hyatt noch macht.

“Three days after you leave the hospital with a broken back, and chemo, and serious multiple myeloma, you decide you're going on this around-the-world trip?”

The Award Travel 101 community is built around sharing and learning knowledge on how to travel the world with points and miles. During the show, Ike walks us through some of his daily battles that might delay his determination to see his bucket list destinations. Despite the fact that Ike broke his back just one week before he was supposed to leave for his trip, he persevered through pain and surgery and still completed his around the world points and miles trip. Make sure to listen to his inspiration and words of wisdom as he walks us through each part of his two week adventure.

The Gas Man Cometh: When Loyalty Programs Behave Badly

The Gas Man Cometh: When Loyalty Programs Behave Badly

"People are so bad at complaining...I'm complaining about how bad people are at complaining...that's where we are right now."

It might come as no surprise that in this world of made up currencies where points don't matter, loyalty programs may not always follow their own rules - or will change them whenever they feel like it. Sure, there are those moments when a considerate customer service representative might take you by surprise and waive a fee, or open up availability. More often than not however, it's easy to feel like the deck is stacked against you.

Complaining can only get you so far. Or, more likely the case you may only have so much time to spend complaining (or fighting for what's right). How do you know when programs are actually acting badly? And, when you do find that moment, what are the best ways to plead your case while having an actual chance at finding resolution or receiving compensation?

Episode 032: New aircraft, new routes: welcome A320neo and 737 MAX

Episode 032: New aircraft, new routes: welcome A320neo and 737 MAX

There is an underpinning of excitement around the world about the introduction of the new Boeing 737 MAX and Airbus A320neo narrowbodies, whose added range will allow airlines to open up a raft of new routes. "You basically have a more efficient airplane that allows airlines to do on the shorthaul what the 787 has been doing on the longhaul," says Miller, citing, for example, Norwegian's plans to transform the Atlantic with a fleet of 737 MAXs. Naturally, co-hosts Max Flight and Mary Kirby also talk to Mike about how #PaxEx should change when airlines deploy 737 MAXs and A320neos on international routes.

Even as international routes are being opened up with new types, the US regional aviation industry is in crisis right now. This is squarely a result of the pilot shortage, suggests. He concedes that there are pockets of hope - as start-ups like GLO and Boutique Air carve our local air service niches - but says these do not regional airline renaissance. We mull the current state of play for regionals.

Meanwhile, there is some good news on the #PaxEx front for travelers in the US. American Airlines and United Airlines are reintroducing complementary snacks, joining Delta, which has long distributed free Biscoff cookies to hungry domestic passengers. But do these small #PaxEx touches really matter to passengers. We talk turkey about the changes; and consider the next #PaxEx battleground for airlines.

Episode 009: Low Cost and Costly Delays

Episode 009: Low Cost and Costly Delays

Welcome to episode 009 of the #PaxEx Podcast.

Ancillary fees are fairly new for the Latin American market, but Volaris passengers will need to start getting used to them. Now that Volaris has migrated to a new reservations system, the carrier is banking on a new ancillary revenue scheme to expand its ability to develop non-ticket sales. In this episode, Ghim-Lay updates us on Volaris’ plan and considers it in the broader context of how ultra low-cost carriers are growing.

Speaking of LCCs, Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary made headlines this week when he promised that the carrier would eventually offer $10 flights across the Atlantic. Yes, we’ve heard O’Leary make these claims before, but co-hosts Max Flight and Mary Kirby join Ghim in addressing the question - are we seeing a race to the bottom in terms of both fares and the passenger experience (#PaxEx)? They also discuss whether the introduction of Wi-Fi on LCC carriers might lure more business travelers to LCCs.

On the inflight connectivity front, Delta Air Lines tomorrow will launch Gogo's Ku-band satellite-supported Internet on two Boeing 747s. The carrier schedule for rolling out of connectivity on its long-haul fleet is significantly delayed, however. We talk about the reason for this costly delay. Mary also reveals details about some of the behind-the-scenes finger pointing that's occurring, and highlights areas where the US major is, in fact, progressing.

Ghim recently attended the Singapore Air Show, which represented a return for Flightglobal to producing a show daily magazine at the event. We get Ghim’s pulse on the show, and talk to her about the now notorious Nok Air press conference, in which Nok Air’s CEO left an impression on Ghim and others in the room. “I’ve never seen women quite as objectified as they were at the press conference,” she says. Max gives us his take as a man who flew for decades for his aerospace industry employer.

Last but certainly not least, we talk about how Delta and American Airlines and other carriers fought to ground Arizona’s anti-gay bill, which, if implemented, would have had a profoundly negative impact on businesses, employees, passengers and, of course, human rights. Props to these airlines for taking a stand!
