033: I'm Surveying You For Alternative Kiss Sites

033: I'm Surveying You For Alternative Kiss Sites
What better way to start the new year than to take a look at the first Chickweed Lanes of 2024? Well, I guess it might be better to NOT look at them at all. But that's really not on the table for us, now, is it? Please excuse Jeff sounding like he's broadcasting from inside a tin can. He was literally inside a tin can. Once again, get ready to enjoy some smooth jazz segues, because the technical problems again befall us. But we soldier on and find ourselves back in the world of ear-kissing and the familiar restaurant booths with seat-backs of varying heights (and nothing on the tables of course). Xiulan insists that her husband Hugh kiss Edda's ear, which he does without hesitation. Polly and Lolly practice piano, which for some fucking reason bothers Edda. There's more about kissing ears, then Amos decides to kiss Edda's neck, which is so very difficult what with all of the fucking turtlenecks everywhere. Then we end our episode with more Polly and Lolly. It's shocking (or is it?) that a random sampling of the first 8 strips from 2024 give us all of the things that are so tiresome and annoying about the strip. That, we suppose, is the genius of Brooke Mac-El-Dee. The Chickweed strips we discuss this episode: You can find all of the strips either on Twitter by clicking here (https://x.com/9chickweedRAGE/status/1751963970750325138?s=20), or on Instagram by clicking here (https://www.instagram.com/p/C2r74dyL7EK/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==). This fully turtlenecked episode includes: Jazz! Lalo Schifrin Champagne Turtlenecks! Greedo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2cajwgDyLM) from Star Wars Rectum? Hell, it killed 'em both! McEldowney Ellipsis Ear kissing Even more turtlenecks! Piano practice So many turtlenecks! Today, we’re kicking off with what is basically the Catalina Wine Mixer of podcast interviews. Our guest today is a filmmaker responsible for some of the great comedies of our time, and someone whose storytelling has undergone a fascinating transformation as the world has slipped into climate emergency, economic emergency and political disrepair. Somehow, in a time with dwindling things to laugh about, this writer-director has found a way to engage with those crises in ludicrously entertaining ways. He's the filmmaker behind Anchorman, Step Brothers, Talladega Nights, The Other Guys, The Big Short, Vice and Don’t Look Up – it's Adam McKay!

Adam got his break on Saturday Night Live, becoming the show’s head writer in 1996. His collaborations on SNL with another emerging comic, Will Ferrell, immediately caught the eye and simply could not be contained to the small screen for long. By the early ‘00s, the pair had turned their anarchic chemistry into a wave of outrageously quotable comedies that fast found themselves woven into our shared pop culture landscape. “It escalated quickly,” as Ron Burgundy might say.

Then came a change of pace. In 2015, after his father lost his home as part of a devastating economic downturn, Adam released The Big Short – a white collar crime comedy about the 2007 financial crash. It won him and his co-writer Charles Randolph the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar at that year’s Academy Awards, and signalled a sea change not just in the content of Adam’s movies going forward, but also in the cinematic language he was using to tell his stories. His films since then – and to a lesser degree, titles he’s worked on as a producer, such as the smash hit Succession –  have doubled down on that new storytelling style, full of frantic edits and experimental flourishes.

Adam’s monumental success has come in the face of a couple of challenging moments medically across his life. In 2000, he was diagnosed with a condition known as essential tremor, and in 2017, he suffered a heart attack on the set of Vice. In the conversation you’re about to hear, we discuss how that heart attack sharpened his resolve to make 2021’s bracing Don’t Look Up. We get into why Step Brothers is a film that “tells you all you need to know about America” – a nation in which “consumer culture has turned us into children,” Adam insists. You’ll hear why he decided to abandon the three-act structure of his old films in part as a response to the rise of Donald Trump and what he’s learned about to fix the world from his recent string of movies grappling with its many problems.

The Entertainment Community Fund do extraordinary work lifting up storytellers of all descriptions, and have been a vital support for entertainment industry workers affected by this summer’s strike action. So if you enjoy this episode, please do consider donating below.

#77 - Interview with Author, Professor, and Media Expert Saul Austerlitz!

Thank you for tuning in!  I am so happy to share this episode with the wonderful listeners of the show!  On this episode, I welcome author, professor, and media expert Saul Austerlitz!  Saul is the author of several excellent titles including:  Another Fine Mess: A History of American Film Comedy, Sitcom: A History in 24 Episodes from I Love Lucy to Community, and Generation Friends: An Inside Look at the Show That Defined a Television Era.  His work has also appeared in well-known publications such as the Boston Globe, the New York Times, New York Magazine, and Rollingstone to name just a few.

Coming out on August 22nd, 2023 is Saul's latest book:  Kind of a Big Deal - How Anchorman stayed classy and became the most iconic comedy of the twenty-first century.  I was fortunate enough to be given a copy of the book so that I could read it prior to our interview and I absolutely loved it!  Saul's writing is so easy to digest and absorb.  I learned so much about the creation of the film, what went on behind-the-scenes, and so much more!  It's a must read for any comedy lover!  You can learn more about his latest book and Saul's career on his website:  https://www.saulausterlitz.com/

A huge thanks to Saul Austerlitz and Hannah Poole for making this happen!

Eric Egan on Heart Attack Man, Going Independent, and Life Just Starting at 29

Welcome to an all-new Films for the Void, Bonus Episode #14! In this episode, Landon interviews Eric Egan - the vocalist for Cleveland-based alternative emo/rock band Heart Attack Man. The band made big waves with their 2019 LP Fake Blood, as well as their most recent EP Thoughtz & Prayerz, both available on Triple Crown Records. However, it’s now 2022, and a lot has changed for the band, as they’ve recently gone independent for the first time since 2014 and the future’s looking bright with two separate U.S. tours scheduled for this fall. You can catch the band in September opening for alternative hip-hop artist Blackbear, alongside State Champs, Waterparks, and Mod Sun on select dates, and then again supporting Tigers Jaw alongside Glitterer in October and November. Landon and Eric chat about Heart Attack Man, their new song "Loud and Clear," making the decision to go independent, and a travel experience so terrible you have to hear it for yourself - all on the latest episode of Films for the Void!

Ep 18: The Ron Burgundy Experiment and a Peek Behind The DMSW Podcast Curtain

Ep 18: The Ron Burgundy Experiment and a Peek Behind The DMSW Podcast Curtain

On this weeks episode, in an attempt to make leaving a review for the podcast more worth your time (and hopefully more fun) as a listener, I volunteered to Ron Burgundy myself on tonights episode. Whatever you guys wrote on the review, I would read it just like Ron would off the teleprompter in the movie. Funny accents, Disney impressions, plugs for your own business or show...whatever you guys wanted. I definitely had some fun with some of the requests this week, and hope you guys get a kick out of it. If you like what you hear, keep the reviews with special requests coming and I can do more again on a future episode.

I also give you guys a peek behind the curtain for what goes on in a week putting the podcast together, trying to grow the show and create new and fun, and hopefully funny content. I owe ALL of you listeners, and ALL of you that follow on Instagram a huge round of thank you's and I try to get those all out on this weeks show as well. This was one of the best weeks in the history of the show numbers wise, and once again none of that happens without your support, so hopefully you feel the love right back.
