    Exotica feat. Soraya Sebghati

    Exotica feat. Soraya Sebghati

Musician and film writer Soraya Sebghati joins from Los Angeles to venture into the lurid, strange world of...Toronto, ON, Canada and its mesmerizing underbelly of desire, longing, and grief in Atom Egoyan's 1994 breakout feature, 'Exotica'.

We discuss Atom Egoyan as director - his keen sense for the uncanny amongst the mundane, and the ways 'Exotica' plays with artificiality, performance, and facade. Then, we discuss the film's musings on routine and the rippling effects of grief, and praise Egoyan's (relatively) non-judgemental curiosity with regard to the habits we all adopt as a means of coping with loss and alienation. Finally, we consider the film's much-mulled over ending and how it offers both a quietly devastating moment of catharsis and a hopeful message of emotional solidarity.

    Taking Woodstock

    Taking Woodstock

It's been an emotional journey, sometimes infuriating and sometimes confusing, but we're here!

To round off the trifecta , we have TAKING WOODSTOCK, a large scale, period-piece, ensemble cast led telling of the memoir about how the legendary concert came to be. No stone is left unturned. No paperwork left unexamined. No telephone line or portaloo left unerrected, this is the definitive story of Woodstock.

There's some good. There's some bad. There's some confusing decisions made. See what you think for yourself, man. Groovy! (ugh)

    Lust, Caution

    Lust, Caution

Watch your step! Apply caution, there's lust in the air! Get a wet floor sign (the joke didn't really work on air either but it's honestly the best I have at the moment)!

The steamy, raunchy, espionage, spy thriller with all those "hard" sex scenes in them: LUST, CAUTION (2007). I mean they're pretty eye-catching, especially if you happen to lock eyes with Tony Leung at any point during them as he's squashing Tang Wei into as small a ball as possible.

It's a mixed bag for us. One of those rare occasions where Ryan likes something more than Laura does. There's plenty to like here but when you're posing an argument that it may be didn't need the hard sex scenes as pertaining to our interests on the podcast and in order to tell a good story, you know something's up.

    Brokeback Mountain

    Brokeback Mountain

"Lee-gacy" is here! And yes, we're covering Ang Lee, y'know, that bloke that played the CGI Hulk in his movie. We don't cover HULK in any capacity other than by mentioning Ryan's favourite behind the scenes featurette of all time but we do cover 3 films that happen to be in sequential order.

First up we have a film that probably needs no introduction. You know what this film is the minute you mutter its title; BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN. It's simply a masterpiece. You've got Heath Ledger, you've got Jake Gyllenhaal, you've got it all.

It doesn't take much to have Ryan and Laura in tears but if you're not emotional at any point in this film, you might want to talk to someone about getting that swinging stone removed from where your heart used to be.

Season 7: Fantastical Realities - Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Episode 48)

In the forty-eighth episode of Season 7 (Fantastical Realities) Kyle is joined by screenwriter Gio Maldonado and Steve Bolia to discuss the beautifully melancholic and tragic reflection on the traditional hero's journey caught between the conflict of material desire and transcendent purpose in Ang Lee's Wuxia inspired martial arts sensation Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000).

    Episode 238: Nintendo gonna Nintendo

    Episode 238: Nintendo gonna Nintendo

Andor ending on the highest note possible. Meanwhile Indy 5 impressed Harrison, James Gunn hints at whats to come, the Cocaine Bear is getting the movie adaptation it deserved!

    "Decision to Leave"

    "Decision to Leave"
“The closer you look, the harder you fall.” Park Chan-wook cross-pollinates a police procedural with a femme fatale romance in his latest film. Swirling around two lost souls navigating a web of murder, deceit, and desire to desperately cling to their perverse affair, Decision to Leave is a sensual puzzle box. We discuss the illustrious director's filmography, the painterly craft behind the movie, and the inscrutable Tang Wei.

Superhero Suite Super Special #008: Hulk (2003) Commentary

Superhero Suite Super Special #008: Hulk (2003) Commentary
In 2003, Ang Lee's vision for a superhero movie was manifested in 'Hulk', starring Eric Bana. In one of the early Marvel movies of the modern era, Lee established some new ways of interpreting comic book stories on film. We get to see the complex origins of Bruce Banner's alter ego while Nick Nolte chews up the scenes as his father. With that and some groundbreaking CGI effects for the time, 'Hulk' is a fun watch, sure to stir some nostalgia and an understanding of how we got where we are today. Jay and Josh realize it's not easy being dayglo green on Superhero Suite.
