    Shaun Jacobs-A Songwriter's Journey

    Shaun Jacobs-A Songwriter's Journey

This week musical guest Shaun Jacobs, the award-winning singer, songwriter, and producer from South Africa takes us through his songwriter's journey.

Shaun has received recognition for his versatile sound and critical acclaim for his chart-topping hits, including a SAMA® (South African Music Award) for Best Adult Contemporary Album for Love Can,  which you’ll be able to enjoy in this episode, as well as nominations for Best Producer and Best Engineer.

Since his move to the United States Shaun has worked with top songwriters in both LA and Nashville, like "Youngr” that was co-written with Brazilian DJ Bruno Martini and produced by Timbaland with more than 16M streams on Spotify.

Love Can held the #1 spot on the local iTunes chart for 12 weeks consecutively and came in as the 14th most played song in all of Africa against all international music on Simfy for 2013. And that’s not all, Shaun’s music has been featured in campaigns for BMW, Ralph Lauren and Bitmoji, including his single, “Look At Me Now”.

In this interview we talked about the role in society that musicians have of expressing with songs people’s feelings that they don't necessarily know how to get out. He also shared useful advice for new artists out there, the importance of expressing without fear their pure own sounds and not being influenced by trying to fit somewhere. We also talked in depth about how to constructively deal with rejection, competition and self-demand in the entertainment industry, among many other things!

You can find him on social media as @imshaunjacobs.

Watch his music video “Say You Will Remember Me” https://youtu.be/kwanNreW78I?si=_DTGF-4YPOYprnpW which we mention in the interview, and also this concert at the Coca Cola Dome in South Africa https://youtu.be/F8FTbeMGTiE?si=tUpWDM95TAd9s7L3

John Borra - Keeping the Songs Alive

John Borra - Keeping the Songs Alive

From punk to rock to roots; from the gritty and exhilarating Queen Street scene of the 1980s, to the intrigue of European street culture; from Toronto Subway stations, to a US tour opening for the Tragically Hip...musician/songwriter/producer John Borra has lived the poetic and storied existence of a true artist - a journey rich with good music, loyal friends, and unforgettable experiences.

John's latest album—Cassettes in Common—is 10 songs written by fellow singer-songwriters: cherished musical allies such as Ron Sexsmith, Art Bergmann, Frank Nevada, and Bob Snider. Some of the songs are from albums that John heard for the first time on cassette. He would play them on repeat, believing firmly that they were some of the best songs ever written. Others are songs that were never recorded or released, penned by friends who may not have received the recognition they deserved. Now many years later, John is carrying on the folk tradition by keeping these extraordinary songs alive.

In this conversation, you will—through John's storytelling—meet many unique characters and creative souls, all of whom have contributed to the vibrancy of the Canadian music culture and sound.

    Jenny Waldo-Making a Film Project a Reality

    Jenny Waldo-Making a Film Project a Reality

In this episode we explore the creative mind of Jenny Waldo, a Houston based film director, writer and producer. She is also a film professor at Houston Community College.

Jenny shares all the juicy advice she would have wanted to hear when she started her career as a film director. She emphasizes how life experience really helps while creating new stories and how enriching it is for her to have produced other people’s work and nowadays being part of helping her students to find their voice and understand what goes into filmmaking.

Jenny Waldo got her start in the documentary/educational industry of her hometown, Washington, DC. Over the years, Jenny produced various scripted and documentary short films as well as writing and directing her own award-winning scripted projects. Her short film, Acid Test, based on Jenny’s own tumble through self-discovery as a 1990’s Riot Grrrl, was screened at festivals all over the world in 2022, with great reviews and transformed later into her debut feature film.

Jenny also reminds the audience to have in mind that as a filmmaker and writer-director, the goal is to communicate something, a feeling, an idea or a character, and every decision we take has to be based on that. We also talked about the next challenge of distribution, projecting and making the necessary plans to enter the films into festivals and then the whole networking that comes with festivals.

Waldo´s producing credits include the indie feature The Preacher’s Daughter which sold to Lifetime , and the feature documentary The Cutting Edge: The Magic of Movie Editing. Her next project in development is also based on a true story: Martha's Mustang. You can donate any amount to help this film become a reality and get a sponsor credit.

You can find out about future screenings of Acid Test or just the development of it and in which platforms it is being screened, at www.acidtestfilm.com

Also at her professional website www.jennywaldo.com you’ll find a tab for Martha's Mustang with updated info. You can follow Jenny Waldo on social media as Jenny Waldo on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Moira Were AM Founder Hen House Coop on the incubation of Flock Coop an artist and creator platform built to disrupt the patriarchy.

@MoiraWere AM is deeply entrenched in the #coop movement. She is currently founder of @Henhousecoop  which incubated @flockcoop.  Her career includes leadership roles in #startups, #businesses and #community orientated organisations.

Moira received an Australian honour in 2019 (AM) for her significant service to the community of #SouthAustralia. She is passionate about #inclusion, #diversity and alignment with the #SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals), bringing this perspective to the development of governance, engagement and reporting for impact.

    In this episode we talk about #startingup, why the #coopmodel was so critical in founding #flockcoop and;

    • the #hackathon that started it all  - they put a proposition to teams to ask the question "If there was an online platform, to support co-op creatives or people who are creatives, what could that be? What could it look like?"
    • the #lawyers, #entrepreneurs, #investors, #community leaders and #techies who volunteered.
    • building things on the fly
    • what it would mean to run a business and cross the digital divide
    • @CodeLikeaGirl
    • @StudioVeld
    • the #incubating role of #henhousecoop
    • closing the #genderinvestmentgap
    • structuring #flockcoop as a non-distributing, not-for-profit co-op, with a goal to;
      • #educate
      • #advocate
      • test some models about how we can disrupt the #patriarchy - rather than giving my $10 subscription to Silicon Valley or a bunch of blokes in a boardroom in San Francisco, or London, or New York, why not give it to another kind of system?  And so that was part of the provocation.
      • disrupt #colonisation through cooperative mechanisms and cooperative endeavors
    • how they plan to overcome challenges in the digital space so the #artists and #creators get better at putting their work into the world
    • some inbuilt and equitable #tech processes e.g. a process where the content of the artisans gets completely refreshed every time you press it. So it's not just the ones who are making all the money that get up the top, which is what's typical in most of the other kinds of platforms like that
    • #feministbusinessprinciples  and trying to build equity into the platform itself, as well as for the participants
    • the incredible networks and fabulous people who have nurtured and supported #Flock
      • board members @KateSimpson and @PrekaVermont
      • individual women and non-binary folks who are really trying to change the world
    • @Mondragon
    • the incredible support of @bccm
    • how communities work, how money flows through communities, and how communities and that economic base can create the conditions for more equitable or more just relationships
    • how #firstnationspeople have been cooperative - there wasn't a legal structure around that but let's not pretend this is new
    • it's always been the preferred model for humans to work together, and to look to First Nations for advice around that

Joelle Provost: A Beautiful Perspective on Environmental Ills

I sat down (over the phone) with my gorgeous friend/former stranger, Joelle Provost. She has moved back to the Bay Area, where she's from, but our memories of meeting and connecting in Brooklyn are strong. It's amazing how quickly one can recognize a true kindred spirit. Joelle and I chat about how and why she makes art, and the amazing alchemy that brings people together in the world.
