    What Makes an “Authentic” Leader?

    What Makes an “Authentic” Leader?
How do you define authenticity, as a leader? If you associate it with what feels comfortable, you may be holding yourself back.

Herminia Ibarra, a professor of organizational behavior at London Business School, says that if you want to grow as a leader, you must leave your comfort zone and try new behaviors. Eventually, she says, you’ll arrive at a more authentic version of yourself.

“The paradox is that a lot of times in order to become more authentic, more fully yourself, but in a new capacity, you can’t start that way,” says Ibarra. “You actually have to do things that don’t come naturally and that sometimes make you feel like a fake or an imposter.”

In this episode, you’ll learn how to try out new leadership behaviors in lower stakes, less visible settings while you slowly improve your skills. You’ll also learn how to balance authenticity with vulnerability when you communicate with your team.

Key episode topics include: leadership, managing people, change leadership, authenticity, growth, communication, leadership presence, organizational change, new manager.

Practicality in Leadership With Jesse Genet

Practicality in Leadership With Jesse Genet

Today's podcast is a conversation I had back in May 2019 with Jesse Genet, who is the co-founder and CEO of Lumi. We discussed leadership and communication, specifically the role humor plays in it and its underutilized potential. We also touch on authenticity in business as opposed to cutting corners or looking for angles. We also dive into work-life balance and decision-making, and the impacts these can have on your career if executed properly. This is a fantastic episode for anyone starting a business or looking to learn more about entrepreneurship in general! I hope you enjoy it!

BONUS | Gareth Southgate: Anything is Possible

BONUS | Gareth Southgate: Anything is Possible

RE-RELEASE: This episode first aired in December 2020.

Today’s guest joins me fresh from a run of autumn camps with the England football team. He’s their manager, Gareth Southgate OBE, and I speak to him about his new book, Anything Is Possible. It’s not really a football memoir, but more a guide to life and there are brilliant lessons for all of us in there – non-football fans included!

Gareth had an illustrious career as a professional football player in the 1990s and as England manager, took the England team to the semi-finals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup for the first time in 28 years. We discuss how Gareth achieved this by employing psychologists (such as my former guest Pippa Grange), modelling emotional intelligence and communicating with each player as an individual. He promotes a mindset of positive drivers not negative drivers: focusing on what players might achieve, rather than what might go wrong. Most importantly, he reinstated a sense of fun. I love his humble, warm, inclusive approach. Under his watch, footballers have started to look more like role models again.

Gareth explains how he used to be a shy teenage player and with his book, he aims to help youngsters get over self-limiting beliefs, nerves and anxieties and learn to be brave – and he shares some great dressing-room stories with me as examples. It may be written for children and young people, with Gareth’s role as ambassador for The Prince’s Trust in mind, but it contains universal wisdom for all ages.

I had so much to ask him, and we managed to cover topics from how players cope without a crowd, to how he breaks the news when someone’s not made the team and the real meaning of bravery. We talk about the pressures on players from social media but also how it can be a force for good, helping Raheem Stirling and Marcus Rashford change attitudes and lives through their respective campaigns against racism and childhood hunger.

I can’t emphasize enough that you don’t need to be into football to appreciate this conversation. It’s about having confidence, working hard, taking responsibility and being authentic. It was such an honour to speak with Gareth and he’s certainly reignited my love of the beautiful game. I can’t help but agree with him that when we come together in a positive way over sport, it has the potential to change the world. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did.

#516: How to Lead an Unstoppable Team

#516: How to Lead an Unstoppable Team

All of us will take on leadership roles at some point in our lives. What can you do to ensure your team performs at its highest level?

My guest today argues that it's all about caring about the people you lead.

His name is Alden Mills. He’s a former Navy SEAL platoon commander and the founder of Perfect Fitness -- the company that makes the Perfect Push-up. He's also written a couple books, including his latest: Unstoppable Teams. Today on the show, Alden and I discuss why caring about your team is the most important thing you can do as a leader. He walks us through what he calls his CARE loop which involves connecting with your team members on an emotional level, giving them autonomy to make decisions, and helping them progress as individuals. Along the way, Alden shares stories from his experience as a SEAL leader and business owner of how to put these principles into action.

Culture & a Great Working Environment (Live Course Recording) [Business, mindset, entrepreneur, disruptors]

Culture & a Great Working Environment (Live Course Recording) [Business, mindset, entrepreneur, disruptors]

Welcome to another episode of the Disruptors Podcast. In today's episode, Rob talks about culture in the work environment. How do you create an environment in your workplace so that your staff will work better?

Ask yourself, what do you stand for? what do you stand against? These questions can greatly help in creating an office environment your staff want to work in. How you manage and deal with culture is still very important. It’s the feel and the environment which the people work in, it’s the energy around the place. It’s your uniqueness and the values that are transmuted into a working environment.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • The environment in which you work is important. You're either driving it or creating it.
    • Values of your organization. Vision. It's your values. Culture values, for them, expanded on their individual values. And they became progressive, innovative and personal for the company.
    • Your culture is your identity expressed through your organization. What makes you unique? For example a lasagna, it is one recipe, same ingredients but when everyone cooks it, it will taste different. Everyone will bring his or her own unique take and flavour in it. Same with business, what do you do better than other people?
    • Brainstorming Exercise: What is unique about you? What are you good at? What do people say about you consistently? How do you like to do things differently? What do you know that others don't? What feedback do you get consistently?
    • What you stand for and what you stand against and who you are and who you are not, so create your culture and stand by it.
    • 3 things that are more important than money: Progression, Recognition and Autonomy.
    • Recognition. No matter how many times you tell someone they're amazing. You still probably didn't do it enough. No matter how much love you spray out in your office, no matter how much good energy you put out into your culture and environment, there will always be someone that's not happy. All you can do is what you can do.
    • Purveyor of good energy. Put this energy into your staff and your staff will put this energy into the customers.
    • Criticism/Critics. That's a necessary function of evolution.
    • Valuable feedback from critics. Listening to critics where they've got valuable feedback, it improves your offering.
    • Persistence and progress always create resistance. So, you should be who you are and do what you think is the right thing to do.
    • The more controversial or polarizing or like if you're extremely left, you will really wind up people who are really right.
    • Only take an extreme stance when you extremely believe in it.
    • The marketing, the sales, the speaking, the shouting, the ranting, the controversy, or whatever. It is all learned.

    BEST MOMENTS

"If you have a decision to make and you have to make it, look at those values. And if the decision that you make aligns with those values."

"Try and create this environment both in the stuff that you put out there and the way that you are, this represents your culture."

"The more you grow, the more haters you have to take on, and they don't go away. I used to think the better I got, the less people would be critical of me. In reality, I learned the opposite. The better I got, more people would be critical of me."

“In general business, I do this. I stand for this. I fight this corner. This is who I am. And fine, you can say what you want. But, you are not gonna change the mission that I drive.”

“If you want to teach people, train people, lead people, and get them to buy your stuff, you have to put a flag in the ground, and say, this works. Do it like this, it works.”
