    Maria Dahvana Headley — Beowulf

    Maria Dahvana Headley — Beowulf

Bro — this is definitely not the “Beowulf” that you read back in school. Maria Dahvana Headley’s gutsy, swaggering translation brings the Old English epic poem roaring into this century, showing you why this tale of fraught family ties, power plays and posturing, and mighty, imperfect people is as relevant as ever.

Maria Dahvana Headley is the New York Times-bestselling author of eight books, most recently Beowulf: A New Translation (MCD X FSG Originals, 2020). Her novel The Mere Wife (MCD X FSG, 2018), an adaptation of the Beowulf poem set in suburban America, was named by The Washington Post as one of its Notable Works of Fiction in 2018. Her essays on gender, chronic illness, politics, propaganda, and mythology have been published and covered in The New York Times, The Daily Beast, Nieman Storyboard, and elsewhere. She grew up in the high desert of Idaho on a survivalist sled dog ranch, where she spent summers plucking the winter coat from her father’s wolf.

Find the transcript for this show at onbeing.org.

We’re pleased to offer Maria Dahvana Headley’s poem, and invite you to read Pádraig’s weekly Poetry Unbound Substack, read the Poetry Unbound book, or listen back to all our episodes.

Beowulf and why we need Monsters

Beowulf and why we need Monsters

The existence of monsters, alongside gods and goddesses, is a distinguishing feature of myths, fairy tales, and legends. Defeating a monster is often the test of the hero, the act that makes that individual a hero.

And yet, life is full of challenges and dangers. There are plenty of opportunities for various forms of heroism in this everyday world and ordinary reality, right? Do we need monsters? Or, are monsters relics of an archaic world view, evidence of a time when people often misunderstood the world around them and feared the boogie man?

    Cannibal Monsters

    Cannibal Monsters

Creatures with a taste for human flesh have lurked at the shadowy edge of civilization for centuries.

To celebrate  this Thanksgiving season, we have decided to dine with a few of these creatures so we could learn more about what drives their insatiable cravings.

Heorot, the mighty Mead Hall of King Hrothgar, was visited night after night by Grendel, who devoured the men of the hall nightly until the mighty hero Beowulf paid a visit.

The Algonquin peoples told tales of the dreaded Wendigo, who hunted and cannibalized the humans in the fridged,  wintery forests of North America.

In Slavic folklore we find a strange hut that stands on chicken legs. Within lives Baba Yaga, a hideous ogress (or ogresses) who is ready for a new victim to cook into a meal.

Zach Weinersmith on Beowulf and Bea Wolf

Zach Weinersmith on Beowulf and Bea Wolf

Tolkien read it as a tale about mortality. The poet David Whyte said it was a metaphor for the psychological demons deep in our minds. And that, insists the cartoonist and writer Zach Weinersmith, is precisely Beowulf's appeal: Its richness opens the door to endless interpretation. Listen as the author of Bea Wolf, a graphic novel for children based on the Old English poem, speaks with EconTalk's Russ Roberts about poetry in general, Beowulf in particular, whether we should require students to memorize poems, and the value of stories for children even without a moral lesson.

    Ep. 155: Metal Thrashing Mad

    Ep. 155: Metal Thrashing Mad

Meet us in the pit this week for a hella good time! We’re getting our aggression by revisiting the starting point of Kevin’s music fandom. The thrash, crossover, and speed metal movement of the 80s spawned his love of all things rock n’ punk n’ metal. We will not be covering the Big 4 of Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax; but if you love them, then you will love this bunch. How will Robert react to one of our heaviest episodes of all time??? Will he be metal thrashing mad or just plain mad?!?!

What is it that we do here at InObscuria? We exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. In this episode, we explore all things mosh-worthy! This is real metal people. All hail the speed and ferocity of Thrash! Our hope is that we turn you on to something new and heavy.

    Songs this week include:

    1. Nuclear Assault – “Rise From The Ashes”from Survive(1988)
    2. D.R.I. – “5 Year Plan” from Crossover (1987)
    3. Stone – “Get Stoned” from Stone (1988)
    4. Evile – “Underworld” from Skull (2013)
    5. Voivod – “Technocratic Manipulators” from Dimension Hatross (1987)
    6. Sacred Reich – “The American Way” from The American Way (1990)
    7. No Mercy – “Widespread Bloodshed… Love Runs Red” from Widespread Bloodshed… Love Runs Red (1987)
